Like other companies, Franklin pushes a "program" where they come out at regular intervals throughout the year to treat your home. For us, we only had a few ants in the spring and had used Orkin before but decided to go with a local company rather than a big name.
We opted for a one-time treatment which include a 30 day warranty.
The first year [2017] we reported some small ants near the kitchen and some bigger ones in the bedroom. Mark came out and although he was nice, whatever he did only seemed to calm down the smaller ants but not the carpenter ants, as he defined them. Mark said we may still see some activity but it should die down. When asked how much activity he said "more than 25 ants in 2 weeks". We counted 23 carpenter ants in two weeks so they didn't call back. For the rest of the summer, we still saw carpenter ants - maybe 5 a week. The treatment did not kill them but Franklin didn't consider this to be a problem.
This year we ONLY had carpenter ants. We contacted Franklin again and Mark came out. We paid for a one time treatment ($225, the price went up) and that includes a 30 day warranty.
This time Mark said only seeing 1 or 2 ants in a week is normal and more than that should be reported. I brought up the 25 ants from last year and he said that did sound excessive after a treatment.
One week later, I called back reporting 13 live ants. Mark came back out immediately before Memorial Day (Saturday) and sprayed again.
Whatever he did stirred up the ants and that night, we were BOMBARDED by hundreds of big, thick carpenter ants running around our house, crawling on our walls and ceilings and walking on my infant daughter as she tried to sleep in her crib. I called, emailed, and texted. Nothing. I have Mark's phone number and tried to contact him... nothing. My husband and I spent hours and stayed up all night killing these ants. The next day, no reply. Finally on the Monday of Memorial Day, he sent a text. We were counting ants and we in the 250s by then. He said we can go out and buy RAID to spray ourselves.
Why did I pay this company over $200 to tell me to go out and buy RAID and treat the area myself?
Mark came back a third time the following week and we had kept dead ants for him to see although he encountered tons of live ones as he sprayed the house again and this time, he said he left poisonous food in three small areas. Again, they said to call back if the infestation doesn't subside.
IT STILL DIDN'T. The entire time I kept asking if the ants are in the walls - that makes the most sense. Mark said unless I see them in the winter, they're not in the walls. The logic behind that is they'll come inside as it gets cold outside if they're in the walls.
At that point, I emailed the main office and asked for a refund. We had only a handful of ants before Franklin got involved and at this point, we had spent almost 3 weeks killing hundreds and hundreds of ants ourselves and buying our own spray and traps.
Only then did management get involved. Steve Sutton called me and told me condescendingly that they don't just "kill" ants, they treat the source and the problem to eliminate the issue entirely. I explained that the issue was far from eliminated since for three weeks straight our house had been under attack from these ants. He said John, the branch manager, would come out.
John treated the property but then told us about some product he could put IN the walls. We removed one outlet cover and he put the product inside. I asked if more was needed on more walls and he said we'll see what happens after this spot is treated. He also said to don't kill any ants traveling in a straight line, rather, follow them and see if we can determine a path. We agreed.
He said we shouldn't see any more live ant activity *soon*. I asked how soon and he just said they should start to die off.... *soon*.
The numbers did dwindle but chances are that's due to the fact that my husband and I literally manually killed so many on our own and with our sprays. Amazingly, even after this treatment we STILL were killing about 3 live ants a day and cleaning up about 3 dead ones.
I emailed Steve, John and Amanda (front desk) again. I asked how should we wait and follow these live ants? Steve asked me to call him. He said to contact the branch and speak with Amanda and he personally will come out and treat the house.
Amanda just emailed me it would be another $225! I already paid that amount and they only made the problem worse! I had to buy my own spray and treat the area! They kept telling me to wait a week or two before contacting them which runs out the warranty!
WHAT A DISHONEST, TERRIBLE COMPANY.
