I give that at three but the hotdog I did not care for maybe it's the bread they use I don't know but wasn't for me. Great dog, needs some TLC on the interior First stop on our epic hot dog day. A Trek leading us to most of the major hot dog meccas in the state, in honor of one of the community events. We came to this place first because it was on the way to the end of the list, and why not have a hot dog to snack on while going to get more hot dogs?! This Frankies is a little run down. the common touch surfaces are clean, but there's lots of dust and dirt along the sils and the exhaust vents. I felt fine eating here, but I did make a note. We order a Georgia hot and a Mac n Bacon dog. They take a few minutes to come out, but once they did I made my way to the booth, took pics, and dug in. A very solid showing! The dog was split and grilled, which I appreciate. Same with the georgia hot, but that had a more solid sear on it. The georgia hot didn't really have spice to it. we were expecting a little heat but the heat never came. The mac and bacon dog was good. mac and cheese was standard fare frozen dinner warmed up mac and crispy bacon. The hot dog was a good quality though. Overall, a good start to an epic day. Its been there for a long time. The place was empty, it was 11:00 am and 3 people working behind the counter. Frankies hot dog is THE BEST, in my book. We waited for months to try this location after the one and only location in Florida closed some time ago, and the wait was so worth it. One night stay in West Haven on a recent trip, and we went here twice in the space of a few hours, no questions asked, no need to even think! Why all the love? I lose count. I am a self-service whore, and Frankies has that, and has that PLENTY. And I just loved the old-fashioned, handle-spinning dispensers for toppings like home style relish, raw onion, sweet relish, pickles, and of courses, ketchup and mayo. Their footlong sausage is, I don't even know for sure how they cook it, but I love that lean, grilled flavour and texture, not to mention the toasted hot bun. PERFECTION. Staff were friendly enough and food came out hot quickly, the menu was huge and varied with all sorts of special deals and combos, at dirt cheap prices. I don't care what others might say, but this to me is the quintessential all-American dog, if only because Frankies dog was my first ever American hot dog. Came here since I was in the area for business. The service counter and seating area is a bit dated. Ordered a foot long chili hot dog combo with fries and a drink. $8 Fries were ordinary. The dog is deep fried then put on the flat top for a minute. Slight crisp outside, soft and tender inside. Served on a tasty split toasted bun. Omg, wth happened to this place??! Been going to this Frankie's for decades, since the 80s and it always had reliably decent hotdog/hamburger stand style food. Have also been to the one in Waterbury and used to get a dog from their stand at the Big E until it mysteriously disappeared about 5 or more years ago, replaced by Bear's BBQ. I guess I haven't been to this or any other location in quite some time as well and it has certainly gone downhill. Not sure if the original owners or family have sold off the whole chain or these individual restaurants are franchised but my first clue something was amiss happened when I went to check the menu online before meeting some friends for lunch. The website is a mess and reminds me of the translated-from-Chinese directions you get after buying some cheap junk on amazon or ebay. When I arrived there, the place was mostly empty with 1 customer and my companions had already ordered. Though it wasn't overly dirty or nasty, the joint has the feeling of a 7-11 now and the food appeared to be the same quality. It took forever for them to make a couple hotdogs which ended up tasting and having the same consistency as the ones on those rolling warmers at the Quick-E Mart that homer simpson eats. Definitely not the delicious crispy footlongs that they used to sell here by Roessler or whoever made them. My friends were not impressed with their food either and a trip to the restroom, where it was 10 degrees, the faucet handle was broken and snow came out of the sink when I put it on, was obviously no picnic either. The only reason I gave it 2 stars was I didn't get food poisoning (yet) so that was a plus, I guess. It is what is is! Hotdogs, burgers, chicken tenders, fish... if it can be fried, they can handle it! I'm a Frankies customer for years, and they are consistent which I appreciate. I did notice that the hotdogs are no longer footlong bug regular bun size. The hotdog was good. Just what I had a hankering for. The chili cheese dog is good. They serve breakfast all day. My favorite place for a long dog simply because of their homestyle relish. Went this past weekend on a late Saturday afternoon. Ordered my long dog SPLIT, WELL-DONE WITH BACON. Topped it myself with small amount of kraut, mustard and their incredible HOMESTYLE RELISH that is a tiny bit spicy. I took one bite and realized it truly is the best hot dog around. I love that you can put the condiments on yourself so you don't get a soggy bun from the wet saurkraut that some heavy-handed hot dog makers sometimes do. I also love their pickles to eat out of hand in a tiny condiment cup while I'm waiting for my order to be called. Their steak fries also ordered well-done so they get super crispy are terrific too, but I can no longer eat them. Trust me--Just try their long dog, split, well-done with bacon. Food is just okay. I ordered an egg and cheese sandwich and a coffee (black). The cashier gave me my coffee first - I checked it and there was milk or cream or something in it, so I asked for what I ordered - a black coffee. The cashier pours out the coffee into a small sink, and instead of taking a new cup, he RINSES the cup and the plastic lid in the sink! The lip of the cup touched the sink, yet he proceeds to fill the dirty cup with coffee! I didn't even want to drink it at that point. The sandwich was not very good, either. The food here ain't bad. It ain't amazing but it's filling. The options at this location are plentiful compared to the Waterbury locations. The breakfast menu is literally my favorite . The burgers and hotdogs are ok if that's what you're looking for. My 12 yr old son loves the burgers and breakfast sandwiches but he pretty much orders the same stuff everywhere go so that ain't saying much. The fried fish is another go to menu item that I can count on for big portion and big flavor. Did I mention they serve beer here. Not a bad option should you choose that route. The interior is reminiscent of a typical diner but at least you can go inside and sit down unlike the Waterbury location. I'd love to give this spot a 4 but it doesn't quite match other restaurants that I've reviewed. I would echo the other reviews here in saying that nostalgia is certainly part of the charm of this place. But beyond that, I like Frankie's for three reasons: - They're best known for their foot-long hot dogs, and I like the self-serve relish (3 varieties) and fresh onion dispensers, allowing you to dress the dogs as you please. - The menu is actually quite broad, encompassing burgers, hot and cold subs, fried seafood, fries and other fried vegetables, and even pasta dinners. Would note that there are more choices here for vegetarians than at most fast food places. - Many items are final-prepared to order, making them hot and fresh when you get them. So there used to be this place in Stratford called Cricket Drive-In. My dad used to take me there when I was little and get me a hot dog with the works. Throughout my childhood, and up until they closed on Dec. 31st of 2004. They were the best hot dogs I've ever had, this place had such a following of people. The day they closed, the line was out door the entire day and people were buying the max that they were allowed to buy. I told you that to tell you this.
