A small gluten-free bakery in Broxburn, Scotland which specialises in gluten-free goods, Wheat free…read moreBakery is one of the better places to get most gluten-free pastries from, they ship throughout the UK from their bakery for £6.25, I personally find this really expensive as it makes a simple bread order cost a hell of a lot more, but if you're in the area and give them notice in advance you can come in and pick it up without paying the postage costs (Honestly, I'm happier to pay it considering it is what they pay and for a package that size it is reasonable, but surely they must be able to work out deals with other providers to make it cheaper rather than paying individual rates anyone can?)
The website interface is a little dated and could be improved, such as by having more information on the storage of the products before ordering, for example, I didn't know one of the doughnuts had to be frozen first before making.
Most of the food items did seem good-quality, the standard bread however I did find to be just okay and the carrot cake was far too sweet for my liking. I found this to be the same as all their cakes, for example, the Victoria sponge came in two parts, rather filled large squares, it wasn't a "cake" by typical shape, and that is slightly disappointing but I get why a business like this finds it easier to do the way that they do.
The cake for me, however, was inedible, it was far too sickly and at times tasted bland and foamy, all you could taste was the sugar which wasn't good, after some research I found out it has 21.6g of sugar per 100g which is ridiculously high, compared to supermarket own brand victoria sponges which contain gluten, this is around 1/3 more. I hate it when places feel the need to put in sugar to make up for the gluten, it just isn't needed. Why not add more fresh strawberries or vanilla?
The potato scones are pretty rare to find gluten-free, and possibly just as hard to make as scratch so they did impress me here, so much so that I bought ten lots on my second order, as you can freeze everything you buy here for three months, so it is well worth ordering in advance so you have everything without need to make constant orders, paying that high delivery.
Three-star rating as they offer a good quality product, in most cases the prices are reasonable before delivery, considering they mainly sell gluten and wheat free goods, yet it is lacked down by the quality of few items not matching the high standards of others, the packaging of my second order also risked certain items getting squashed and I also find the postage fees ridiculous and find it absurd they've been unable to get anything lower than £6.25 with my DPD which is the rate any individual would pay if they go to DPD right now, especially as I've dealt with shipment before and know there are much cheaper rates out there for businesses like this, who are shipping a good amount of orders.
A unique offering for gluten-free, including some of the best bread I've had being a highlight, but issues with pricing, website interface, delivery and quality of sweet goods other than the bread and potato scones really do make this rating feel a little generous.
