Megan, the mixologist behind this cocktail menu, brings real craft, boldness, and subtle layering here to every drink. It's an inspiring work of art. With started dining with bruschetta topped with balsamic reduction and fresh mozzarella. Simple and perfectly prepared. Dinner dish one was fried chicken thighs with French-cut green beans. The chicken was juicy with a crisp, light breading; the beans were buttery with a punch of garlic. Again, perfectly prepared. Second dish was the medium-rare ribeye which was basted in garlic and herbs. I chose hand-cut fries and from the list of preps for steaks and burgers went au poivre to test their French chops, steak-frites-style. Note to self... au poivre on a burger is one I'd never thought of and is now on my list to try. The steak dinner was decadent. For dessert we chose crème brûlée... which was light and delicious. We also tried the bread pudding and it could stand proudly in New Orleans. Service was fantastic across the board. The view of the green is beautiful but on a 90 degree day for a seasonal place I was surprised there were no outdoor fans. Golfers coming of the course do have to walk through the patio area to get back to their cars which didn't bother me but can be descriptive if it's a large group. The lower bathrooms also double as changing rooms for golfers and have a shower and dressing area in each. Our server was friendly and attentive. The menu was small but very varied though there were certainly some colder weather option meals that looked interesting but would have been uncomfortable to eat in the weather. We shared the poutine and hummus plate for apps. The hummus was presented well and flavorful. The poutine had alot of meat, a good dollop of horseradish sauce and a surprisingly small amount of cheese curds. Fries were good. For my main meal I ordered the club sandwich without ham and kettlechips. The club was a single decker and was as expected but just a bit smaller. But the real star of the plate was the home made kettle chips seasoned with old bay. Admittedly old bay seasoning is one of my favorites. I would go back again and try some other things.

But I digress, Mad River Inn has lush gardens and thoughtful landscaping throughout the expansive property. It seems like a wonderful place to hold a rustic themed wedding as they have an outdoor chapel with seating and a dedicated indoor hall. The inn, tap room and restaurant are all very tastefully decorated in modern farmhouse style, with a lot of greige (gray-beige) paint that was very popular a while ago. Thoughtful touches are every where. Our check in person was very nice and helpful. We loved our room for our family of three where we could spread out and not be all in the same room all the time. The twin beds were wonderfully soft (my personal favorite) but the queen bed was definitely not as lush. I slept in one of the four twin beds as my husband snores. The bedding was soft and inviting. AC was great as it was a very hot humid day/night. The complimentary breakfast the next morning was next level good served by a very friendly, very accommodating chef. Homemade granola, breads, bagels, pastries etc but also a cooked to order breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and home fries. Juice coffee etc of course as well. So I would actually give this place 5 stars but took off some for not having a dining room open for guests every day and the fact that our whole family mentioned the constant low level banging noise we heard below us as we were all trying to sleep. As there were no guest rooms below us we surmised that it was probably a washer and dryer making the noises. Husband said an easy fix to this is an arrester on the dryer that can be added to lessen the banging. Or skip doing laundry past 10pm. Still would highly recommend. Wish we could have tried the restaurant for dinner.

Kevin and Scott have done an incredible job since taking over the Inn. It is just what you would hope for as far as ambiance, it is spotlessly clean, very comfortable everything in our room worked, not an easy thing in 200+ year old building. Thoughtful things like an open outlet at each night stand for charging electronics, plenty of room for putting your things away. Breakfast was great and we enjoyed the pub/bar that is open for guests from 5-8pm. Very warm friendly atmosphere, we thoroughly enjoyed it!
