    Front at night

My wife and I checked in on Friday January 20th. Parking was in a plowed lot. The inn was very welcoming upon arrival. We were greet at the front desk, handed our keys and given an explanation of the property. We booked the Inn Suite, since we appreciate having a little extra room. The room was nice, but keep in mind this is a old historical building and that is reflected in the suite. There is no television which is fine with us. Wifi is good and strong. We ate are meals both breakfast and dinner at the inn, first night in the pub and 2nd night in the dinning room. Food was good to excellent. Cocktails were nicely made and presented. The entire staff was friendly and helpful. There are a host of on site activities in the winter including xcountry skiing, hiking, skating and horse drawn sleigh. Tubing for the kids. Definitely a great experience and we will be going back again soon..

Feel like Home :) After a long day skied at Cannon Mt. we searched for a place to stay near by. This place is only 20 mins away from the Mt.! The property located away from a busy highway which created a feeling like home. Big fire place, cozy couches and the tea tables allowed us to sit down and relax anytime. A PLUS IS A GAME ROOM! Great breakfast too! I love their Egg bennies. Near by several places to hike such as Artist Bluff / bald mt. and Sugarloaf which we did all of those they suggested us too.

This spot was perfect for everything that we wanted to do! The Inn is fairly small- probably around 9 or 10 rooms. The hotel was pretty empty during our stay so we were upgraded to a room overlooking the lawn which was great. I can't say enough about the property. It's nestled in the hills and is just so serene. There's a small stream nearby and if we didn't have so much to explore I could have spent hours laying on the hammock on the back lawn. The inside is equally impressive - it's got a very preppy feel and I felt like I was in a Polo ad. There are lots of cozy sitting areas, fireplaces and shelves filled with books and games. The actual guest room is spacious and the bed is comfy. It's an older hotel but you can tell there were updates. The AC works well and the shower has good pressure. Because of covid there is no daily room cleaning. There is also normally a bar and restaurant onsite but it's not open because of covid. But there is still a daily breakfast for guests included in the stay. Breakfast is sit down service every day from 8-9 and comes with eggs, fruit salad, an English muffin and a meat plus coffee and juice. Always delicious and filling! Staff is also friendly. We had the same server for breakfast every morning and she was very sweet. We also saw the innkeeper Doug around periodically and he was always super friendly and helpful. The rate is reasonable and the location is great. Your about a ten minute drive from Franconia notch / echo lake / cannon mt and around a half hour from mt Washington. You can find lots of food and breweries ten minutes north in Littleton or twenty minutes south in Lincoln. We will stay here again without hesitation and I truly think it would be a beautiful and enjoyable visit during all seasons.

This year (2009-2010 ski season), the Horse and Hound is under new management and it is again one of the best apres ski and dining establishments near Cannon Mt. Don't be misinformed by the old website which is soon to be updated. The Hunt Room menu is comprehensive American Cuisine. The daily specials are a must. The portions are good. The lounge has great atmosphere, music, a well stocked bar, friendly service, free wifi (a big plus for the area) and big screen television. The area also has some of the best Alpine and Nordic skiing around. My wife and I have been there twice in as many weeks and we expect to make it a regular venue for the ski season.

Within hours of arrival, we were forced out of one filthy, unsafe room into another that was even worse. We encountered mold, broken fixtures, hotel doors with no lock, and blood-stained bedding on both the linen of all beds (what was stated to be possibly from drug users that frequent the location). Staff admitted the rooms were unfit yet failed to provide clean linens, stating cleaning service was unavailable and my wife and I would have to strip and remake blood-contaminated beds ourselves while our children slept in personal blankets in chairs due to the time of night. The situation escalated into harassment, dishonesty, and ultimately a police visit based on false claims made by staff (Kevin Jam). Management (Bija Patel/Vin Patel) upon discovering Jams harassment, mishandling, and misrepresentation of facts to Law Enforcement (which he was warned of) misrepresented their role, stating there was nothing they could do other than a 10% discount on our stay due to my family "being publicly humiliated in the hallway late at night". Upon departing, we contacted Best Western Corporate, they informed us although they utilize the Best Western name they do not recognize their affiliation. This property demonstrated severe health code violations, reckless staff conduct, and a complete disregard for guest safety and basic human decency. Avoid this hotel at all costs. When attempting a refund through Best Western they stated although the property utilizes the Best Western name they do not recognize their affiliation.

Despite few guests they could not offer a 20 minute early check in because they weren't cleaned yet. Security was lacking with unlocked but unmonitored doors around the clock. Extremely clean, room smelled clean. Besides that what I loved was the fact that you have grills available to you, there are benches near the river, they have a fire pit you can use, they supply the wood, and there is a good size pool too. They have corn holes, and a volley ball net. The grounds are beautiful and nicely maintained. They provided a light breakfast of muffins, cereal bars, orange juice and fruit cups. My only advise is pick a room on the 2nd floor because you can hear your upstairs neighbors. Thankfully by 10pm they quieted down. I highly recommend it!

But this isn't about them... this is about the wonderful Hillwinds Lodge and how they saved the day! Thank God for good hearted people. My husband drove into Hillwinds Lodge and with big hopes and crossed fingers, he went in to see if they had any available rooms - rooms that didn't cost an arm and a leg. Much to our delight, the couple who run the place were very kind, light hearted and accommodating. Not only did they offer us a room with a view of the creek, they also honored the price of the room that expedia advertised from the "other" hotel. We are sitting comfortably in our room and cannot wait to get up tomorrow morning to see the view and enjoy the sights. The hotel is very charming, with adirondack chairs in front of each room and a fire pit ready to go out in the common area and of course the babbling creek right across from our room. We are so grateful and delighted that we found Hillwinds Lodge!

The cabins are also a bit too close together so you can hear people talking all around if they have the windows open. The fire pit was perfect and right on the little stream behind the cabin. I think next time we will try to rent one of the cabins on the other side of the bridge just for a little more privacy and quite. Inside the cabin I really liked whatever Incense they had burned before we got there and that they had everything we needed in the kitchen. One issue was that the dishes were not clean when we got there so we had to wash a few before using. Also in the bedroom one of the screens was not properly attached on the bottom so when we opened the window we ended up getting a lot of flies and mosquitos inside. The bathroom was a bit tiny but i expected this with such small cabins. The walls in the shower are not attached to the wall though so do not lean on them or you could break or tip it to the tip (couldn't tip it over though). Main problem with the bathroom is that after a hot shower and you open the door it sets the fire alarm off that right outside the door even if you had the window open to let the steam out. He was definitely not happy being woken up at 6am because I wake early. All in all I would stay again but I would defiantly pick one of the back cabins over the front one we stayed in.

Although it's somewhat close to the road, we never heard traffic, and since it's such a rural area to begin with, there's not much traffic anyway. We truly felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. There are some cabins on the other side of the creek that are slightly more secluded for people who want that.

She had put the heat on and a light on in our cottage so it was ready for us. Room was cozy and cute, as we expected. No fluff and relatively small but has everything you need including a microwave and small fridge. Bed was okay, not super comfortable if you have a bad back or anything like that, but fine since we were tired from hiking and passed out! Housekeeping services are not provided daily which did not matter to us, just something to note since that's important to some people. The grassy area walking from parking and the main building to the cottages is a little sandy/gritty, so the floor gets dirty quickly. Wish there had been a doormat to wipe our feet before entering our room to keep it a little cleaner. Every morning for breakfast Michelleprovides fresh fruit and some sort of super fresh and delicious pastry that she makes from scratch (we had cranberry orange muffins, coffee cake, cinnamon sugar doughnut sticks and cinnamon sugar/coffee cake topped muffins). That is just the start of breakfast! She makes you literally whatever you can possibly think of and doesn't even provide a menu - if you can think of it she can make it! Throughout our stay we had breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, French toast, pancakes, fried eggs, sausages and hash browns. She also even remembered after the first day that we liked ketchup with our hash browns and that I like OJ! We also ate here for a super late, small dinner one night and got Margherita pizza. The dough and sauce is home made which is why we got it! It was VERY cheesy, which can be good, but needed a little more sauce on it to balance it out. Quite tasty (although we're from NJ/NYC so we have unfair standards for pizza) and what we needed for a quick, late snack. Loved the fresh loaf of Italian bread when we sat down - again, of course, made fresh by Michelle. So doughy and warm that we actually ordered some large loaves to take home with us at the end of our stay.
