I've been going to Ocean City, MD for as long as I can remember. And for just as long, I've been hearing people rave about Fractured Prune donuts. How many times, in my entire life, had I actually tried one? Zero. But I was determined to change that during my solo birthday adventure to Ocean City this year. My first Fractured Prune donut in 41 years...I was more excited than I probably should have been. For those unfamiliar, Fractured Prune has been an Ocean City staple since 1976 and is known for letting you build your own donut masterpiece--starting with a hot, fresh donut and customizing it with glazes and toppings however you like. No pre-made rows of donuts here--just pure, creative, donut freedom. Since I was visiting in March (aka off-season), I wasn't even sure I'd get my chance. But I was thrilled to find this location open until 12pm on Saturdays. PERFECT. I got up early, watched the sunrise, and made my way over to finally experience the hype. I had studied the menu ahead of time because I knew if I didn't, I'd stand at the counter forever trying to decide. I landed on one donut--a Banana Nut Bread creation (banana glaze, cinnamon sugar, peanuts). I was attempting to show some level of restraint during a weekend that was otherwise...not about restraint. I walked in around 9:30am on a beautiful March Saturday and found a small crowd already inside. Clearly, even in the off-season, people know where to go. I placed my order, paid my $3.57, and asked if they had stickers as a little keepsake from my birthday trip. They were out, but the kind gentleman behind the counter offered me a magnet instead--which I happily accepted. A few minutes later, my number was called, and I was handed a purple box that felt...surprisingly heavy for one donut. I took it out to my car, opened the box, and immediately started to cry. I was on a solo birthday trip--my first one in a long time--and while I was doing my best to fill it with fun and new experiences, there was definitely a bittersweet edge to it. Inside the box weren't just my one donut--but two extra donuts and a handwritten "Happy Birthday!!" on the lid. It was such a small gesture, but it meant everything in that moment. It made me feel seen. It made me feel celebrated. And honestly, it made my entire day. The kindness of the people working there didn't have to exist--but it did, and it mattered. After I pulled myself together (and stopped crying over my donuts), I finally took a bite. I get it now. I fully get the hype. The donut was incredible--served warm, soft, moist, and perfectly cakey, with the banana glaze, cinnamon sugar, and peanuts all working together in the best possible way. It took serious self-control not to demolish all three donuts right there in the car. I'm not even sure I've ever had a truly fresh, hot donut before this--but if this is the standard, Fractured Prune has set the bar very high. For $3.57, this was one of the best purchases I've made in a long time--and eating it in the sunshine during my birthday adventure is a memory I won't forget anytime soon. Logistically, it's easy: free parking in a nearby strip mall, quick ordering, and fast service. Just note--there's no indoor seating. You grab your donuts and go...which honestly isn't a bad thing when "go" can mean taking them to the beach just a few minutes away. Fractured Prune is officially on my "must-do every time I'm in Ocean City" list. And next time? I'm not pretending I'm only getting one donut! read more

We had to check out these donuts while in Ocean City. We went to the location nearest our condo at 56th Street. While there was a line ahead of us, there was a greater line behind us when we left, which shows the demand and interest for these donuts is definitely there. I was a little frustrated that there were no prices listed anywhere, not even a menu with prices at the counter. So I had to do a bit of Q&A with the order-taker to ensure we were getting the best deal. Maybe putting up a temporary sign might be helpful in guiding customers to make decisions before they get to the order counter. Just a thought to help keep the line moving ... We tried several different kinds, like the morning buzz, the carnival, the OC sand, the hill, the beach, and even a banana smoothie. The donuts were very warm, almost hot, but tasted great! I'm not necessarily a fan-favorite of cake donuts, but FP definitely serves them warm, which enhances the flavors of the different types of donuts they sell (the chocolate chips, glaze, etc.). The inside of the store isn't really for eating, but no one really seemed intent on dining there. I think there's one table, with chairs, but most people ordered or picked up their mobile orders, and either went back to their rooms or condos, or ate them outside. FP is definitely worth the visit and the kids loved all of the choices and different flavor varieties. There's something for everybody here and I encourage you to check it out! read more

Great great service! Big open space. I'm shocked they don't have some tables for dine-in. You can see the kitchen from the front counter. Open and clean. Staff at front gave us history in the name because who would think anything with 'prune' in it would be delicious. Simple cake donut that is 'made to order' with various glazes and toppings. We let ours sit for a minute to truly get the glaze soaked into the donut. We had lemonade, raspberry, plain Jane, and strawberry shortcake. Fractured Prune is the standard bearer for hot doughnuts fried fresh to order. The inside is big enough to accommodate long lines and crowds. I've been there in peak summer (packed) and in the middle of the off-season; even then, several folks came in for the goods. The menu has over a dozen flavor choices, but it breaks down to one of three approaches - something simple and sugary, some sort of fruity glaze, or something super decadent and probably covered in chocolate chips or some other topping. It's all good, but my favorite is the OC Sand - this cinnamon and sugar topping gives a gritty, almost sandy texture - but in a good way, I promise! I also highly recommend the Miss Prunella with its mixed berry flavors and the Maple Bacon - what more is there to say? The prices are what you'd expect from a beach town. Good news is they will knock off 3% of your price if you pay cash, some bring some bills if you want to save. Highly recommended. read more

The plain Jane was solid and reminded me of a lightly sweet corn bread (sans the corn, of course). It would be great with butter or as a biscuit or sandwich. I left here wanting to open a franchise of this place in Pittsburgh. I love donuts and, belonging to a foodie group for the Rehoboth Beach area where I spend a lot of time, noticed many people talking about this place as somewhere you absolutely have to visit. So I tried the Rehoboth location, but they were in off-season hours and I had missed the weekend window. Would have had to wait a few more weekdays to hit up the Rehoboth Beach location....but I noticed the Ocean City location, which seems to be the OG, was open on this weekday. That's not a long trip down the road and we're on vacation, so why not? So glad we did! I've heard stories of very long lines at all of their locations but there were only a few people in line at this off hour of the mid-to-late morning. I read through the menu and placed an order for four of their suggested combinations of donuts. When I took them to the car, we decided to try just one while it was super fresh and hot. The texture was so light and airy and the flavors were so wonderful that we continued looking at the online menu and I marched right back in to order four more. This time they were just putting in a fresh batch so I had to wait a little longer, and he threw in an extra (OC Sand, highly recommend) for my wait. We might have eaten one or two more in the car. I will make this a much earlier and more frequent stop on my next visit. It's the stuff vacation nostalgia is made of. read more

My husband and I were visiting friends for the weekend and was super happy to see that this place was so close to where we were staying and it was still open! We came in and were the only people there. The guy at the register was super patient with us as we struggled to choose our donut flavors. We got a mixture of ones on the menu and creating some. Our order was made fresh! It didn't take too long, and the guy wrote down everything we ordered on the box so we would know which was which. The guy at the register was nice, although not overly friendly. We brought the donuts back to our friends and ate. I tried the strawberry shortcake donut while my husband went for the chocolate frosted donut. We loved them and thought they were really really good. I honestly liked them a little bit better then Duck Donuts. I had messaged their Facebook to see if they were still open, and they got back to me pretty quickly. Still really good donuts. First time back since 2019. Yowza, the price increases will make you stop! I still want to get donuts while I'm here. I picked up a dozen and tried their pumpkin pie seasonal flavor. Overall a lot of the donuts taste very similar because it's either a glaze or sprinkle that's different. But it's still good. I like to sample donuts when I travel and Fractured Prune popped up when I looked for donuts in Ocean City. No surprise that FP popped up though, there are at least 7 stores in this area! Interesting concept - old fashioned donuts on the smaller side, dipped in the glaze of your choice and then dipped in toppings like mini chocolate chips, coconut or Oreo. They also have some regular combos like Chocolate Cherry (cherry glaze, mini chocolate chips) and Banana Nut (banana glaze, nuts, cinnamon sugar). The folks in the back making the donuts fresh to order were sweet, but I took off a star because the counter person was less friendly and the box that the donuts came in is very flimsy (hold the box from the bottom not the sides, I almost lost my entire order by grabbing the sides.). The donuts are warm because they are freshly made and flavors were good. I am not a fan of old fashioned donuts, and prefer yeast donuts, but these were really good! These places are apparently run all along the east coast once you pass Wildwood...and man do I wish they'd creep up a bit further to the north Jersey/NYC area. You can never have too many neighborhood artisanal doughnut shops, and Fractured Prune certainly qualifies as one. So I finally was able to have my go at these guys on the way back up north from Ocean City during Memorial Day Weekend (was hard to justify during the weekend, given that I eat/drank well into my 'doughnut allowance' by noon most days!), but boy am I glad I did. With so many tasty choices to choose from (banana cream pie, caramel bliss, cookies n cream, french toast, s'mores, strawberry shortcake...the mouth-watering list goes on and on). I asked the cashier what the most popular doughnut was, which is apparently their original glaze. I...just couldn't settle for that given the dainty variety they had. Second most popular? Peanut butter cup. SOOOOLD. I mean, peanut butter is generally my default choose for anything (i.e., everything I ordered at my multiple outings at Dumsers), so if it's a crowd-favorite too, then I couldn't go wrong. And I didn't. The doughnut was served quite warm/fresh, glorious peanut butter glaze oozing down the sides, mini chocolate chips oozing along for the ride - pure delight. Notably there was a Dunkin Donuts next door. The line was substantial, but moved quickly. There were no doughnuts ordered during my entire tenure. Rightfully so, or you'd be a damn fool. I would like to give 2 1/2 stars but I feel it's fair to give this place 3 stars. I want to give them points for their unique flavors and making the donuts right in front of you, however they still fail on a lot of different fronts. 1. WAY too pricey. I got a donut and a frozen coffee and my order was almost 9$. Absurd especially because there's a Dunkin' Donuts right next door. 2. Frozen coffee wasn't even special. Literally tasted like they got store bought creamer and a tiny drop of coffee and blended it together with ice. I understand that's exactly what frozen coffee is, but it's not good that I can tell. 3. Donuts were on par with Dunkin' Donuts munchkins.
