Forget John Barleycorn or Jack and Gingers: This is the best Iowa bar I've found in Chicago. I came here for a basketball game and it was pretty dead, but I was still treated like VIP for being a fan and football game days are a blast here. Fun atmosphere. Fun staff. Good bar food. This is one of my favorite neighborhood bars. The manager (Josh) and bartenders (Randi, Kyle, Jade, and Matt) are friendly and just want you to have a good time! The day of game 4 of the WS, my party of 6 and I came in around 12:30pm to get drinks/food and watch the Cubs game that evening. Not until 3:45, well after food and drinks were ordered and consumed, did we receive notice that all tables were reserved for the evening. We were upset/disappointed and with good reason. We are regulars and Iowa alum, so it's been a meeting place for us every football season. To welcome us in, receive our patronage, and then ask us to relinquish our seats (without extending the courtesy of notifying us prior to placing our order) was shady at best. This experience has me questioning my choice of venue on game day (and any other day for that matter). read more

Came here on a Tuesday for trivia and loved it. The spicy chicken sandwich was tasty, beer was cold, and the trivia was great. The hosts were friendly (and audible, which is a step up from many other bars' trivia nights!), and the game moved at a good pace so there wasn't too much downtime waiting for questions. Four shadows is my favorite neighborhood bar! The food is delicious. It's rarely too crowded and the great service never changes when they're swamped. Customers are down to earth. The place is clean. They have plenty of t.v.s. Trivia Tuesdays are a blast and there's usually fantastic live music on Friday nights. What keeps me coming back, though, are the bar tenders and servers. Tonight me and my friends met at Four Shadows as part of a bus deal to go to the Dave Matthews concert at Northerly Island. We paid $30 for a bus ticket round trip. We met at Four Shadows two hours before the bus was scheduled to leave. The nachos I had were really tasty and the beer prices were reasonable. However, there was no air conditioning in June and so the bar became really overheated. We left on a yellow school bus, which also had zero air conditioning might I add, and drank Coors and Bud light on our way to the concert, as part of the bus package. That was all fine. What was not fine is that we paid $30 for a round trip bus to and from Northerly Island. We left the concert right as it ended, but by the time we got to Field Museum, the pickup point, the bus had left. The owner even took our phone numbers and did not call us to tell us that the bus had left. So we were forced to Uber back to the north side, although we had paid Four Shadows for a round trip bus ticket. I would not buy any type of event tickets from this bar. They are unreliable and a rip off. How about being responsible for picking up the individuals who paid to ride your bus? When it comes to Four Shadows, I say skip it! Plenty of other good bars and pubs in the north side that actually provide the service you paid for. Nothing worthwhile to see here! read more

One of the best low key sports bars in the city. Lived by here for 2 years and even after moving away I still come back. Amazing/extremely friendly staff and great deals. BEST HAWKEYE BAR IN THE CITY! As a very loyal Iowa fan - there are many bars that I could go to for Iowa football games. But the atmosphere at Four Shadows is the best around for Iowa games. The staff is friendly and fun - even during the most crowded, hectic times. They offer fun raffles with great prizes during the games, and have great drink specials. And you can tell that the staff is mostly loyal Iowa fans as well (unlike some other fake Iowa bars that jumped on the bandwagon to get more business on football Saturdays). If you're a Hawkeye fan, definitely give it a try for a football game! You won't be sorry! read more

Since the place is very close to my house, I hold a special place for this establishment. With that being said.... The menu is fantastic, with daily specials ranging from 50 cent wings on Monday to $5 wraps on other days. Drink specials are always avaliable for everyday of the week. The Shads is a very nice-low key alternative to the other Lincoln Park area college bars. You will find a more sophisticated crowd that is looking to enjoy some conversation without screaming at one another. The staff has always greeted me with a smile and friendly banter, which provides a bit of uniqueness that takes you back to your homwtown watering hole. I have visited Four Shadows very often since my first visit. the food, the service, and the bartenders are very legit. We were going in for a quick beer on the way to a friends house, and ended up staying till 2am! They were so welcoming, and we even had our friends meet us there instead of going to the next bar. The food is always served fast and with a smile. I love me some wings to start which are phenomenal (spicy and BBQ mix). I have tried just about everything on the menu and haven't been disappointed in the least. read more

Just moved into the neighborhood and they welcomed me with open arms. Great food, great staff, and clean. Nice neighborhood sports bar, with tvs everywhere! They recommend the spicy chicken sandwich and Im glad I tried it. The BEST chicken sandwich I've ever had, not too spicy, great flavor and I had to get the tots! My friend had the bleu cheese burger, it had a nice twist with onion rings on a toasted pretzel bun. She loved the fries. We were there on Thursday and they had 1/2 price glasses of wine and effen drinks on special, you can't beat that! They said they have daily food and drink specials we will defiantly be back to check them out. read more

Four Shadows is truly a neighborhood gem! It's a ridiculous Hawkeye Bar, (Best in Chicago hands down) plus they have awesome food and great specials. I've watched many games here as they have an excellent tv set up...it's pretty much impossible to not have at least 2 or 3 flatscreens in clear view. The staff is always friendly and very accommodating, they'll put on any game you ask for (aside from Iowa football Saturdays of course). I was there for a fantasy football draft last night and they have added a great new burger menu to go with their already awesome menu...seriously, I haven't had anything that I didn't absolutely love! Being a 2010 Iowa grad, I'm new to Chicago. I checked out Four Shadows for the opening game last Saturday...and had a blast. I got there a little after 10AM, and the bar was already standing room only (I guess I'll just have to get there earlier next week). Tons of TVs. $8 pitchers of Miller Lite and $5 Jager Bombs. Got a really good burger that wasn't that expensive as it came with Tots. They had a pretty sweet halftime raffle with some awesome prizes. I'll be back this week for the Iowa State game. read more

This place could and should be a great bar but there are some major issues they need to deal with. Their drink prices are are not good. They charge like they are some bigtime place and not the neighborhood bar that they are. Even what they refer to as specials are not specials. The beer is never very cold and never served in frosted glasses. More important to note is the complete a-hole that manages the place. This dude has no idea how to run a bar. He never speaks to any customers, and is probably one of the rudest, cocky idiots I have ever been around. This has been brought up to other workers there in the past and they say they hear that from customers a lot. Food is really good, decent draft beer selection and the place should really be a good neighborhood bar. Get rid of the manager, he sucks. read more

Been here a few times, always enjoyed it. Good dance music mixed in with sing-along power ballads! Packed on the weekends and for Iowa football games. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. Chatted with the bartender Jen for a couple hours on a Weds night...nice lady. Great food for a neighborhood bar. Spicy chicken sandwich is delicious (chef signature). We did have them cancel our delivery order about 40 minutes after placing it on a weeknight that was super no bueno but the food and and staff have always been so over-the-top awesome, we chalked it up to a singular bad night. Every single other time we've ordered, we've had A++++ food and piping hot even in the dead of winter. The potato soup, Southwestern burger and steak sandwiches are our favorites! read more

Four Shadows is awesome. First, because it's an Iowa bar, but also because they have good drink specials and great food! I really liked the taco salad there and the sweet potato tots were delicious! Flat screen TV's are on every wall so there is no where you can sit without a clear view of the game. I will definitely be coming here again! read more

Went to this bar on Friday night after a show at the Lakeshore Theater and boy, was I disappointed! There are a few things that gave this bar such a low rating: 1. Rude staff - bartenders where are you here? They would just look past you when you looked right at them. Also, my fiance ordered a pitcher of beer for $8. He gave him a $10 and the bartender decided to just take the extra $2 and put it in the tip jar without asking. Ridiculous. 2. Bad drinks - I truly don't think there was any Bacardi in my rum/diet. And their pitchers are the short chubby ones where you get 2 pints out of it. That's not a "deal" for $8. 3. Rude patrons - holy cow! The people in here were so impolite. I am one who will say "Excuse me" as I walk through a crowded bar and generally people will move as best they can. These people did not move an inch and looked at you as if you were from Mars. "What? Me move? How dare you ask?!" And this guy totally elbowed me right in the chest (I'm a lady), looked straight at me, and never said a word! I held back not going and punching him in the nuts... So bottom line, I will never be back. Yuck. read more
