Trail Series, Part 41 Is there a bad time to go hiking in…read moreFlagstaff? Not that I'm aware of, but Fall is certainly a GREAT time for this! Just as the days become shorter and the temperatures cool, the Aspen leaves adorn the forest with a glorious yellow hue that seems to first absorb, and then reflect, the sunshine. While not the only location for getting your Fall groove on, we found "Humphrey's Peak Trail" (and its surrounding environs) to be generous providers of the vibes we were seeking. None of the trails that we traveled were paved and their difficulty ranged from easy to moderate. However, as you travel up the mountain you'll find that the rocky outcroppings become more frequent and the hike becomes more strenuous. Before long you'll find yourself at 10,000 feet, so you'll be in much thinner air than you're likely used to and your water/rest breaks should increase accordingly. Each trail we explored was well traveled, but the buddy system is still recommended (if for no other reason than to have someone to marvel at the beauty with). Wildlife sightings are common, but it is the rare sightings of Big Foot that are the most cherished. Ample parking and portable restrooms can be found at the trailhead located at the end of Lot 1 of the Arizona Snowbowl Resort. For those interested in traditional restrooms and/or a restaurant, both are located at the resort and an easy walk from this parking lot. If you visit Flagstaff in the Fall, please don't find yourself "leaving" without experiencing the "leafing" all around you this time of year! And that's...Henry's Take. I recently went on a tour with Walkabout Adventures to Havasupai Falls with 12 other people and I…read moremust say it was one of the best trips I have ever taken!!! I will admit I am not much of a hiker, and still a week later am not necessarily walking the same as I did before I went on this trip, but I will also say that it was worth EVERY second of it. Havasupai Falls alone is enough to make the trip worth it with it's beautiful water falls and pristine scenery, but going on the trip with Walkabout made it 100 times better. Included in the price of the trip is transportation, pack mules to carry your stuff in and out so you don't have a heavy pack on your back, all camping fees and equipment and gourmet meals for the 3 days you are there. Who would have thought we would be fed Salmon, Chicken Fajitas and Chocolate chip pancakes at the bottom of a canyon!! The two guides who took us on the trip were so patient and kind and pushed me limits I never thought I could go. It is nice to know that next time I go to Havasupai with Walkabout, they give you the option of taking a helicopter or horse ride in or out of the canyon!! I am glad I hiked it the first time, but in the future the horseback riding looks fun as well. Overall it was a fantastic trip and I would recommend it anyone and everyone looking for something different, exciting, SO MUCH FUN!!!!

The food was excellent, the guides had tremendous wilderness knowledge and technical skills, and one guide in particular was instrumental in helping me complete the JMT. I witnessed exceptional leadership in difficult weather and even an incredible response when a guest nearly fell on Mt. Whitney. I will always be grateful for those parts of the experience. Unfortunately, the interpersonal and guest-management side of the trip fell far short of what I expected from a professionally guided expedition. I experienced favoritism toward certain guests, inconsistent expectations regarding group safety, and repeated sexually explicit humor even after I clearly stated that it made me uncomfortable. The most upsetting incident occurred following a delayed resupply, when I was told that my actions had caused the group to resent me and had potentially ruined the trip for everyone. I cried, questioned whether I should leave the trip, and apologized individually to other guests--only to discover that they did not share the feelings that had been attributed to them. To the guide's credit, he eventually realized the situation had not been accurately presented to him and gave me a sincere apology, which I accepted. I continue to have enormous respect and gratitude for him. However, those difficult days cannot be given back. I reported my concerns to Wildland after returning home. Following a lengthy review involving guides, other guests, and multiple internal teams, Wildland told me that my feedback had contributed to changes involving professional boundaries, guest comfort, communication, and guide training. I sincerely appreciate that they investigated my concerns and used my experience to improve future trips. What disappointed me was what happened afterward. This trip cost approximately $8,000, before gear, transportation, food, and other expenses. I wasn't expecting a full refund for a trip I completed and that included many wonderful moments. However, after acknowledging that my experience had contributed to changes, Wildland offered no partial reimbursement, future travel credit, or other gesture to repair its relationship with me as the guest who had actually experienced these issues. I previously traveled extensively with another adventure company and came to Wildland hoping I had found a new company I could trust for future adventures. Unfortunately, despite accomplishing my dream and having some extraordinary experiences on the JMT, both the interpersonal problems during the trip and the lack of meaningful customer recovery afterward have left me hesitant to travel with Wildland Trekking or its parent company again. I am incredibly proud that I completed the John Muir Trail. I simply wish the guest experience and customer care had matched the quality of the trail, food, and wilderness expertise
