I was the less experienced hiker and wanted my sister to be able to enjoy the hike without worrying about me. So, I hired Four Seasons Guides for a day hike in February. We had a wonderful experience, and I can't recommend them highly enough. Our guide, Steve, was charming, knowledgeable, very experienced, and took very good care of us. We had our own packs and poles, but he had some on hand just in case. Breakfast fruit and muffins were provided as well as a hot lunch set up as a picnic and snacks for the trail. My sister was anxious to get on with the hike, and I was always stopping to look at the view or ask Steve some random question about canyon geology or history (which he always knew the answer to). Somehow, due to his expertise and great people skills, we both came away thinking we each had the perfect day. Steve took away all the worry about the weather, route, wildlife (there were elk on the trail and several donkey trains passed us) and made the hike much more fun and interesting. Also, other experienced local hikers that we met on the trail let us know that Four Seasons Guides were the best and we were in good hands. If you want a fun, worry free day I highly recommend them.

Great experiences with adventure southwest tours, we went to Antelope canyon and Horseshoe bend…read more Horseshoe bend was a cool stop in the desert but Antelope canyon was our favorite place! The light and the sandstone walls of the canyon were phenomenal. The orange light is gorgeous. You have to have a Navajo guide too once you enter the reservation for the antelope canyon. Our guide was a high school girl and she was helpful to get our best photos of the canyon features. The adventure southwest guide helped with ideas for other sight seeing places and she gave us history of the Arizona region. We opted for the tour where they drove us and provided lunch. It was a grand introduction to AZ history!

I went out on a tour to Red Mountain with Billy, which was fantastic! I learned how the cinder cone…read morewas formed, how geologists can "read" the patterns in the formations to try and determine the process that gave it shape, general geology of the area, and learned to identify different rock types found around volcanic eruptions and how their structure indicates how they were formed (hornblende was everywhere, but olivine was my favorite!). I have only recently begun explore geology, and Billy was very good about explaining everything at an appropriate level. He is very knowledgable, so I am sure he would be able to provide a lot more detail to more expert geologists, too! The hike was pretty easy, but there was some scrambling towards the end which was optional. Billy offers number of different tours that vary in difficulty, and I would definitely recommend checking them out. Its a great way to visit new areas, or see familiar ones in a new light!

Going out to the Petrified Forest National Park with Billy was a fun way to tour the badlands and…read morelearn the history of how the formations, such as the trees became petrified wood. My favorite part of this tour was imagining what the area must of been like 225 million years ago when there were large rivers, lakes, trees, and dinosaurs! This adventure was a fun way to experience nature + education through understanding my surroundings while exploring. I was able to take from this tour the idea of stratification, the layers of dirt that were deposited over the years. Geologist look at the strata in the earth and are able to explain how the land changed overtime. I was able to compare that to my field of sociology and how I look at stratified societies and their different social groups.

Our guide David met us early at Under Canvas in a comfortable van that was stocked with a fantastic variety of cold drinks, fresh fruit, and snacks that started the trip off right. It was exceptionally hot the day we scheduled our tour and we were concerned that we would have a difficult time with the heat. Our tour included our nine year old son and we were also worried he would be bored. David really made the trip enjoyable despite the heat. We were able to really get a sense of the majesty of the Grand Canyon through its wondrous beauty, its history, the danger it can present to the unprepared, as well as his relationship to the park. Highlights are many but included: * David made sure our first view of the park was breathtaking * We avoided the crowds (big win!) * Lunch was on a tablecloth, was delicious and included all the accoutrement * Sunset wine toast with charcuterie and cheese * Mindfulness moment to pause and reflect on the grandeur of the Grand Canyon The biggest highlight though was that our nine year thought David was the coolest guy which meant he was totally into the experience.
