I was the less experienced hiker and wanted my sister to be able to enjoy the hike without worrying about me. So, I hired Four Seasons Guides for a day hike in February. We had a wonderful experience, and I can't recommend them highly enough. Our guide, Steve, was charming, knowledgeable, very experienced, and took very good care of us. We had our own packs and poles, but he had some on hand just in case. Breakfast fruit and muffins were provided as well as a hot lunch set up as a picnic and snacks for the trail. My sister was anxious to get on with the hike, and I was always stopping to look at the view or ask Steve some random question about canyon geology or history (which he always knew the answer to). Somehow, due to his expertise and great people skills, we both came away thinking we each had the perfect day. Steve took away all the worry about the weather, route, wildlife (there were elk on the trail and several donkey trains passed us) and made the hike much more fun and interesting. Also, other experienced local hikers that we met on the trail let us know that Four Seasons Guides were the best and we were in good hands. If you want a fun, worry free day I highly recommend them.

Our guide David met us early at Under Canvas in a comfortable van that was stocked with a fantastic variety of cold drinks, fresh fruit, and snacks that started the trip off right. It was exceptionally hot the day we scheduled our tour and we were concerned that we would have a difficult time with the heat. Our tour included our nine year old son and we were also worried he would be bored. David really made the trip enjoyable despite the heat. We were able to really get a sense of the majesty of the Grand Canyon through its wondrous beauty, its history, the danger it can present to the unprepared, as well as his relationship to the park. Highlights are many but included: * David made sure our first view of the park was breathtaking * We avoided the crowds (big win!) * Lunch was on a tablecloth, was delicious and included all the accoutrement * Sunset wine toast with charcuterie and cheese * Mindfulness moment to pause and reflect on the grandeur of the Grand Canyon The biggest highlight though was that our nine year thought David was the coolest guy which meant he was totally into the experience. The labyrinth at the end was cool. Highly recommended! DIRECTIONS-- take the freeway exit by Village Camp. Go through the roundabout. Continue west on the frontage road past the convenience store. Pass Village Camp turnoff on your right. Keep going straight. Watch for sign. You'll turn left on a dirt road that takes you back toward the freeway but not on to it. The signs will get you there.

TLDR: Confusing and incorrect directions on website meant we arrived at 4:05 instead of 4:00. We…read moremissed their cutoff by minutes and were curtly denied entry. When I tried to explain how following their instructions got us lost and we had been circling for the last 20 min, they didn't care. I was spoken over. The coldness and the rudeness was the worst part. It made this mom, who was very excited to do this and took off work early and got her kids excited - to not want to ever come back. I wish they chose kindness, which would seem more on brand for a place focused on promoting mindfulness and being grounded. Lessons for others: - Do not use Google Maps: It will route you to an adjacent rest stop where you can see the entrance but cannot get there. It will cost you 20 minutes to fix this. - Study alternate directions before hand: Reading the wall of text of alternate directions and navigating unmarked forest roads isn't possible while driving. - Know they will deny you entry: The website says they stop taking reservations at 4, but they really mean we will deny you entry. And they will be very strict about it. - Reservations only: This place wasn't friendly to walk-ins. Not worth the stress to find, the $60 to touch nature with feet, and the attitude when literally surrounded by other woods for free. We went on another free hike instead and got the same benefit.
