My sentiment seems to be in line with the reviews for the past few months- great food, awful service. The food, while pricey, is very good. I've had two visits now and was pleasantly surprised by how good the food tastes. I imagine the prices reflect a high food cost to acquire quality fish for the great sushi. The service, both visits, was terrible- from the host to the wait staff. This recent visit, we waited at our table, with the menus, for 20 minutes before having to ask the busser if we had a server. A couple minutes later, she arrived and we ordered food and drinks. Drinks arrived 10 minutes later and food about 30 minutes after that. Soup, salad, and sushi all arrived at the same time. We weren't rude and didn't voice our frustration about having to refill our waters and beer, just politely asked for another. When she dropped off the refills, we never saw the server again. After eating and waiting for awhile, we again had to ask the busser for our check and a to-go box. I would certainly recommend the food, and advise anyone to get the food for take-out only. read more

Stopped by after very poor service at craft and vine across the street. We were welcomed by a lovely lady name Kim that was super funny and sweet. She informed us that it was happy hour and we should take advantage. So we did! She brought over the mounds of food and laughed as she said "oh you thought hour meant small" hardly the case as our eyes were amazed by just how much food we got! The sushi we ordered was very tasty but a bit too much sauce so that's why I gave them 4 stars. I would request no sauce or on the side next time. We also ordered bugogy, Tuna poke and Ton. I could not believe this place was here 3 years and I never went in to try it. So glad I did. Was craving sashimi and thank goodness I was in the area. Absolutely great menu with a huge variety of specialty rolls, rolla without rice, and deep fried rolls. Our waiter Jiwon was awesome, very attentive and friendly. I will definitely be returning more frequently to try as many new items as possible. Highly recommend. Spacious dining with outdoor seating. More parking behind the building as well. read more

This is my sushi go to! So thankful to live close but I'd drive just for the ambience, quality sashimi and customer service. The spicy bulgogi and salmon sashimi are my faves. My servers have always been so attentive especially Tazia. The owner Kim runs a tight ship and the live music from the patio is a great date night spot. read more

Horrible horrible horrible service! Do not go here . My husbands order came on time and correct. My son's order came 30 mins later after begging for at least his food since he was hungry but the order was wrong and the noodles were so over cooked they were slimy and just falling apart. My food never came, so I just cancelled it BUT SHE STILL TRIED CHARGING US FOR IT. Lol it's so bad it's funny. Then to top it off I tried going inside ( we were sitting on the patio) and she snaps at me asking what I needed and why I was going inside. I'm sure she was afraid that I was going to say something to her manager , but I was just going to the restroom. Oh and the restrooms leaks from the bottom when you flush so you're grossly standing in a mini puddle. I wish I could give this negative stars or none at all !! read more

Where do I begin? Well we moved here from Seattle, WA where sushi is pretty much the best of the best, especially when it comes to seafood. We've been to a couple of sushi places around the area but Foster's by far is the best. If you are looking for quality seafood that is prepared very well and is of great quality and taste then you have picked the right place. Caroline served us and was absolutely wonderful. Similar to others who stopped on Saturday lunch, few tables full, 3others , and inexperienced staff. My wife order a cocktail off the menu that took forever because they didn't know how to make It. My vodka soda came with just a couple cubes. Asked for more ice, took 10 minutes after I had to again. Ordered the Bento based on the attached photo and was told it is weekdays only. Fosters has become a favorite spot for my wife and I to get our sushi fix. This is my first review of them after having their food 4 times. Due to COVID, we've never dined in and each time ordered it to go or have it delivered, everything is labeled and packed up nicely. The squid salad has become one of favorite apps. Plenty of flavor and perfect amount of fish. This most recent we ordered, in addition to the squid salad, we ordered the spicy tuna roll, Mr Robato (rice less roll), and the yellowtail special roll Aside from the rice less roll everything was great. Nothing wrong with soy paper, I just didn't like the texture. read more

Miso soup, 4 California Rolls, salad, & 2 dumplings along with the Pork & Rice! The spice of the pork was perfect & dumplings were awesome. We got yellow tail sashimi as an appetizer. I had never had sashimi so I was a little nervous. I didn't know how to eat it with the soy, wasibi, & ginger but the sweetest lady was our waitress & showed us how. Saturday Night, date night. Quiet atmosphere, probably because it's empty. Second time, first was a debacle. We decided to give them a second shot since first time was right after they opened. Food took forever to get there and then it was over cooked ( Salmon). Still only 6-8 people here. We're seated, waitress was nice but vet inexperienced. Ordered a bottle of Joel Gott cab. The bottle showed up at table, opened and our waitress has obviously had ZERO training on serving wine. Proceeded to pour two full glasses. We didn't say anything as we wanted to give them a chance to get it right. Missed it. Had one job and blew it second time. No manager in sight the entire dinner. Bartender looked like he belonged at a Game Stop. Ball cap on backwards and sloppy dress. Sushi chefs were chewing gum like they were trying to stay awake. Food/sushi was ok. We enjoyed shrimp tempura roll but average sushi. Second time disappointment. 7:00 there were still only 12 in entire restaurant. I give this place 4 months. read more

We love living close to so many unique small restaurants. One night, we decided not to cook, and made the short drive to downtown Roanoke to scope out what we wanted to eat. Saw that this new sushi place opened up and wanted to give it a try. It was VERY busy inside, which we thought was a good sign. The wait was pretty long, so we opted to sit at the bar. We ordered some drinks and they came out fairly quickly, but it all went downhill from there. We ordered the ahi tuna tower as our appetizer, and put in our dinner order (a couple sushi rolls) at the same time. While we waited for food, there were several order mishaps for the families around us. One couple was given two of the same plate (they only ordered one), another one was given something incorrect and had to send it back. Another dish came out that no one ordered and the waiter just ended up leaving it at the bar for whomever to eat (??). We asked about our food a couple times and were told it was on its way. (We were getting hungry!) FINALLY, food showed up. But, it was our rolls & no appetizer. We asked about it, and our waitress said that the kitchen was behind (but the sushi chef wasn't). "I can go check on your appetizer now!" she said. My husband said not to worry about it; we wanted it before our dinner, not after. While we were eating, we asked for our check; we were ready to leave as soon as possible. Our check ended up being wrong, and they had to correct it for us. Also, while we were eating, dirty plates and glasses were left out ALL over the bar. Other people were walking up to eat and had nowhere to sit or place their drinks. The 3 bartenders + the manager were behind the bar talking, so I'm not sure what the delay was. I know this place is new, but there are some things that shouldn't be surprises...and this was pretty bad. I wouldn't mind trying it again sometime, but I will have a backup restaurant in mind just in case it's like this again. High point: my sushi roll (Volcano Roll, I think?) was very good. First time I visited the location in person was yesterday. The location is nice. I went in the middle of a workday just after lunch rush so it was quiet which was nice. I ordered the crab Rangoon to start would not recommend literally hurt to take a bite. It was so over cooked. And still on the bill at the end of the meal. Also had two spicy salmon hand rolls those I would 100% recommend very delicious. For service I had to go find my own soy sauce. I have eaten here many times and have always had an exceptionally pleasant experience. The sushi chefs are all extremely good what they do and the fish is ultra fresh. At lunch once I was able to see them actually preparing a whole fresh fish for the evening dinner crowd. The restaurant is extremely clean, not too loud, and the seats are comfy! The wide array of special rolls and fish will please any taste in sushi. If you are not that into raw fish, they have an extensive menu of other stuff. The Dumpling soup is wonderful! Stopped by here on a Saturday afternoon, the place was empty. We were literally the only people there. I think the entree options are expensive for what it is and for the type of food served. We ordered calamari and honestly, it looks like the ones you buy in a huge box at Costco, no authenticity at all. I was expecting actual cuts and some tentacles or something, but they were just plain, generic looking rings. The sushi was quite fresh though, so I will given them that. But out of the 4 rolls we ordered, we were only given wasabi and pickled ginger for one of them. Service was alright, nothing top notch or out of this world. The place is nicely decorated with plenty of natural lights, but besides that, not really a place I think I would return too. read more

Been here a few times now. The experience has been the same each and every time. The food: actually very good. I have had multiple items and the flavor is quite pleasant. Though depending on what you get, the consistency of the make/sizes is not consistent at all. Hospitality: the people are kind and pleasant but it takes an arm and a leg to get anyones attention to actually serve. The food might be ready but they do not bring it in a timely manner and on multiple occasions they would forget something i ordered and would get it way late making me not want it again. If you were to be better at the customer experience i would probably come more often. I should not have to hint someone down just to pay my bill or get more water. Happens almost every time here. Went on a Friday night, last night between 5 and 6pm. Was immediately seated and provided menus. Waited a good 15 minutes. After we received menus, no other interaction from anyone. There were 3 full booths next to us and although they had drinks, did not see any wait staff around those tables. Menu looked good, restaurant looked clean, however zero service. This was not a crowded restaurant. We walked out and spent our money at another restaurant. Don't waste your time with this restaurant. They are not concerned about good customer care. read more

Fish may have been ok, but it seemed as if the whole nigiri tray was under a heat lamp for awhile, slightly cooking everything. We finally gave up on the experience after two hours and got our checks for the items we did receive. This was our first visit, so we will give it another try someday in hopes they were just having an off night. The atmosphere is good, nice patio. We are finally done with this place. Seriously Fosters get your act together. The wait staff can bring soup; you don't need an organized kitchen for that. The soup came finally at the end of the meal after bringing the wrong soup first. But that wasn't the worst part. We had such good meals here previously that we couldn't wait to come back because the hibachi was so good. Tonight when we finally got the meal (we had not been served the soup or salad we ordered), my husband's entire plate was ice cold. So of course we sent that back to be cooked again and when it arrived it was better, still no soup, but at least we had meals. The fried rice was super loaded with pepper it was barely edible. Seriously, I don't know why this food is so inconsistent; but you have finally sealed the deal for us not coming back. Being an Asian myself, my family is very picky when it comes to authentic style sushi. All I can say is we were very satisfied. Sushi was fresh and tasty, Korean dish was exceptional. My son and daughter loved Galbi and Bulgoghi. I've been to many Korean restaurants in the past, this place by far is one of the top of the line. It was little pricey, but the amount food you get is overwhelming, literally two people can share one order of spicy bulgoghi. So it actually came out cheaper. I ate here when it first open with my Japanese wife. The service was super slow which is but the sushi was unlike anything I had ever had before. The taste had been stripped out of the fish. The only thing I can think of that would cause this is refreezing the fish. Hopefully now they have been open for a while they don't practice that. read more

the sushi here is good and I enjoy going to Foster's; however, carry out can be a nightmare. The issue is with their phones - it is frequently left off the hook. I have on multiple occasions (at least 3) attempted to order via phone and not been able to do so...tonight is number 4. The phone simply says "the mailbox is full..." and no answer. I went to Foster's with my in laws after searching for hibachi around the area. Although they do not perform hibachi for their guests like typical hibachi restaurants, it was still good. Their sushi is very good and pretty fresh. The oak st one is my favorite. Kim (the owner I believe) is kind and welcoming. We also got to enjoy live music during our second time dining in today.
