I hadn't been here in years! In fact, this was my first time at the new location which isn't even new anymore. This new location has a large bar and ample seating. Plenty of restaurant-style ambience and room for families and large groups. The service is still as good as I remember. Know what the best part is? The food is still amazing and exactly as it's always been. Fresh ingredients make a spectacular sandwich similar (and dare I say better?) to another legendary Pittsburgh sandwich joint. The Foster House is known for their "King Sandwich". For those that haven't had it, it is similar to Primanti Bros. The thing is though, in my honest opinion... they put Primanti Bros' to shame. I have never had a better Primanti-style sandwich anywhere when compared to the Foster House.. even at Primanti's. The bread is from the local bakery and is fresh, soft and awesome. The cole slaw is plentiful and great, as well as the other toppings. To put it bluntly....The-- food --is --excellent. Cool note: If you eat in, you get free fries with it, and on Sunday's, they have BOGO for eat in. They have great drink specials, and this is the place to go for a few drinks. Full disclosure: This rating is not reflective of any of the King Sandwiches because I have never tried any of them. I am just not a fan of fries and slaw on my sandwich, so I am sorry to all of those who i've already offended. I work with a few people who rave about this place non-stop. I figured it would be pretty good, and I ordered a steak sandwich. I was not impressed with the size. I feel it was a very small sandwich and I was still pretty hungry after finishing it. Even with a side of overpriced hot pepper cheese balls (you get about 5 tiny balls in an order) I still could have had a second sandwich. The taste of the sandwich was not bad...don't get me wrong, I just feel like their portions are lacking on all of the non "King" sandwiches. Not alot to pick from on the menu, either. So this is my second rating for Foster House. Still a gem but had an awful experience with the bartender/waitress. This isn't the first time we've had her. She's miserable and not a people person. She acts like you're a bother and is oblivious to what's going on around her-like a line of people waiting to pay their bill because they just want to leave. I watched multiple people walk out because there were no seats. If she would have finished off her tables and collected money, there would have been plenty of open seats. Food is still amazing and quick to come out but a bad bartender/waitress will ruin a whole business. I was anxious to try the Foster House since it moved. Walked in at around 11:45 for lunch, not one other person was there to eat. Was not greeted for five minutes or more. Very mediocre waitress, when I asked about a kids menu she snarled, we don't have one. The hamburger my grandson ordered looked very tasteless and my other grandson got a small order of fries which was a very small portion. My daughter in law split a sandwich with me which came out while the kids were finishing their meal. My recommendation to the owner is to hire friendly faces and step up with the food. It was just okay. Paper plates, plastic forks, bland food and unfriendly waitresses is not the way to attract customers in a remote location. If you blink driving past you might miss this gem. Foster House is a bar restaurant seemingly untouched since the early 90s with classic painter murals of Pittsburgh's sports legends. It's even still cash only. What entices us to make the 45 minute drive is their collection of "King" sandwiches, which is essentially a Primanti's sandwich made with love in your grandmother's kitchen. Personally, I've tried the others, but my favorite is the King Cap. The bread is pillow soft. The meat is always cooked just right, never dry. My husband and I are both active duty military visiting his parents from Virginia Beach. My husband wanted to go have lunch and a beer with his buddy. The FEDERAL LAW states an individual with an expired state driver's license is legally allowed to keep and obtain that expired license AS LONG AS they're active duty military with a valid and current military ID. Foster House owner refused to serve my husband who just got back from overseas. Clearly no respect or knowledge to even WANT to accommodate their customers. They accused him of lying about being in the military, and accused him of having a fake license. Oh and one last thing, their cole slaw on their king cap's is warm. First and last time to the new Foster house. Honestly wasn't worth the ATM fee I had to pay to get cash out for this "cash only" establishment. Very under staffed on a busy "promo" night.. wings for $.25 We sat at the bar and ordered our wings at 8:05pm and didn't get them until 9:23pm. The waitress did warn us of a wait but nearly an hour and a half for 24 wings seems excessive, with only one sauce choice?? Hot sauce is all they offer. Sorry to anyone else who doesn't prefer to have their insides burned out. We waited another 40 mins after finishing for anyone to give us a check. The group beside us flagged down the bartender who had been servicing our end of the bar only to be told "I'm off, get one of the other girls". We have tried the new foster house on 3 occasions. I definitely should have listened to my boyfriend and never went back after the first visit. My first time there was for lunch with my mother on a Monday in July. The restaurant was not at all crowded but we waited for quite some time before even being asked about a beverage while we watched the older bartender stand behind the bar applying makeup, putting on jewelry and not even looking our way. My boyfriend and I decided to give it a SECOND chance for a Saturday night quick meal and a few beers in November. Again... HORRIBLE service and sub par overpriced food. My boyfriend actually asked to speak to the manager. We were told there was no manager but the owners happened to be there drinking. We asked to speak to one of them and watched our server go speak to them. The woman owner gave a snide glance our way and we waited and waited to speak to them but they never approached us so we left. It seemed their drinks were much more important to them than their patrons Our third and final straw was last night for wing night. I'm not sure who the owners of this place are but they must not enjoy making money because it seems they could care less about their customers! We got there around 6:45 and we're told the owners made a new rule that no wing orders can be taken before 7 so we were free to order drinks but would have to wait our turn at 7 to put our order in and there was already at least 10 people waiting before us to put them in too. Now I understand wing night starts at a certain time but to be told we can't even order was ridiculous! My boyfriend ordered a bucket of bottles of Coors light. I, being pregnant, ordered a water and was told I could not order wings unless I ordered at least a soda. When I asked why I was told the owners consider wing night a "courtesy' to their guests and have continued to change the rules every week on the way wings could be ordered and served to try to maximize the amount of money they can make. Now of course all businesses need to make money but the owners of this establishment act as if they are serving wings dipped in gold! As I said, I don't personally know the Foster house owners but after talking to several people since my visit, it is my understanding that they are not very well liked because of their uppity attitude, poor ways they speak to their employees and how they feel introducing themselves to their customers is beneath them. I will never go back and I will suggest the same to every one I can. These ppl seem to have a snobby attitude and heads that grew when their restaurant size did. I don't forsee the amount of patrons growing the way they are going. We ended up across the street where they were also having wing night and were much more warmly greeted, the owner made rounds checking on the customers and their wing selection was huge. Very unfair service (on Wing night at least). I've been told multiple times that calling in a wing order is not allowed. In order to get my wings at a decent hour I usually come in between 6:30 - 6:45, place my order, and wait patiently until 8:00 for wings to come out. On a good night the wings come out at 9:00 for me. What frustrates me is that groups of people will walk in at 8 and immediately get their wings. I've asked why this happens and was given a nervous response of "oh, they walked in earlier and placed their order". Found out later into the night that a large group of people got their wings first because their significant other works here. Very unfair! If it was one or two people I would not be that mad. The fact that 20-30 people are able to jump in front of me and get their wings first (while I've been patiently waiting and buying beer for the past 2 1/2 hours) pisses me off! Don't get me wrong their wings are probably the best in the area, as well as the rest of their menu. And the only reason I continue to come is because of the food. Not sure if the management is allowing this or the workers are hooking up their friends. Whatever the case, it needs to stop. Every week I come here I become more and more frustrated at this. This was my first time back after being out of town for a very long time. Not much has changed. If anything, the sandwiches are even better. I will say first of all that the sandwiches are incredible. My personal favorite is the king steak. I add onions to mine with some hot sauce and a bit of ketchup. The drink specials seem to be on point and I really like that the "feel" of the place hasn't really changed in 20 years. Just a cozy affordable place with great food, good drinks, and cold beer. The only negative for me is that they don't take credit cards. I don't like to carry cash, so that is pain in the ass. Come on guys..
