Four and a half stars. My wife and I ate here twice while at the Lord Elgin hotel on Rememberance Day, once for breakfast and again for dinner. For breakfast we got our breakfast comped by hotel vouchers due to them giving a queen room instead of a king we reserved (which had a bed that seemed less spacious than our full at home but they upgraded us that morning). We had the lox benny and avocado toast which was decent but not great. Dinner on the other hand was amazing. We tried some of their great local beer and cider collection and dined on mushrooms on toast, poutine, a haddock sandwich, and a Halifax Donair while seeing the poppies glow along the monuments in and around Confederation Park across the street. Loved how the foods were from across Canada and we had plenty of leftovers, especially the pointing. read more

I'll be honest--I didn't love this place. Tried it twice: once for drinks and appetizers, and the second time was room service since we were staying at the Lord Elgin. Both times were underwhelming. The chicken was a bit dry, the fries were greasy (I couldn't finish them), and the prices were too high for what you get. Also, I had to ask three different waiters if there were nuts in one of the sauces they brought (pesto). It took so long to get a clear answer that most of my food went cold. If you're in the area, I'd recommend walking into town and trying somewhere else. read more

We have come twice to this restaurant due to staying a few days in the hotel it resides in. Our servers both times were extremely friendly and chatty, making the environment quite relaxing and lovely. My favourite server was definitely the lady who greeted us at our second time dining with Grill Forty One. She was making jokes, chatting up the table and being an overall great server. Our drinks were quite lovely, the hot chocolates and coffees were well made and perfect for the weather outside with the pouring rain. Our meals were delicious, and very filling. They were well made, and I very much enjoyed the potato wedges that came with the g41 classic. I would definitely come again for another breakfast if I'm on a complete empty stomach, since the portions are a bit big. But I definitely came out with a full stomach. :) read more

I hosted a wonderful event for our project here last night. I worked with the Catering department at the Lord Elgin and it was very simple. All I had to do was choose the food and beverage options, and everything was set. I didn't have to lift a finger. We had two platters - charcuterie and veggies. Then we had veggie samosas, zucchini and ricotta wraps, bruschetta, shrimp, and more. All were very small and bite size. My only regret is that I didn't order more food! We had an amazingly attentive server! I would definitely say that our server was the best part. No one ever needed a drink or anything like that. When we had questions, she was right there to help us out. Big shout out to our amazing server. Unfortunately, I didn't get her name to recognize her personally. I would recommend booking your event on a weekday. Since we booked on a Thursday night, the restaurant was not too busy, so we were able to have that attention from the staff. Why doesn't Yelp allow for zero stars. The Christmas buffet...where to begin? First, the food quality. Frankly, it was almost funny, if it wasn't so awful. The turkey was dry, the cranberry sauce needed ANY amount of sugar, the gravy was watery and flavourless, the stuffing was soggy, the dinner rolls were dried out and the desserts, well I'm pretty sure they came from Costco. There was no option to order from the menu either. That's my fault...I should have researched the menu for the day but I assumed a hotel of the calibre of the Lord Elgin would put out a decent Christmas dinner menu. Should have gone to The Keg. The ambience...what ambience? It was like dining in a dimly lit cafeteria on a university campus. For this, we needed a reservation? The music was too loud and it wasn't even seasonal music. The service...our server was passable but how long does a buffet plate have to stay on the table before it's collected? Too long. My husband came back with his second plate and the first one was still there. And then the price...$178 of regret, and my husband only drank soda water. Maybe I should have had a second martini to forget the disaster that was this Christmas dinner. Spare yourself the pain...go to The Keg, The Social, The Courtyard...anywhere but Forty One. read more

WalKed by this restaurant a million times but only when out of town guests stayed at Lord elgin did I eat here. It's actually ok and not at all like a hotel restaurant (no offense intended). Most of us got steaks - all came as per order request and mine was perfect and tender. The sides were good too, recommend the asparagus and the spinach. Wine list was good, not pages long but coveted the basics well. I'd recommend this place if you wanted a steak. read more

You would think a restaurant in a fairly decent hotel would be pretty good. You would be wrong here. Went for breakfast. I just wanted toast and eggs but everything was just full breakfasts at $18 ish a pop! Had a full breakfast and gave my bacon to my companion. Eggs were fine. The potatoes were not hashbrowns but mcain deep fried potato wedges and not many and worst of all you only get ONE pice of toast. ONE tiny pice of. Toast !, Wth??? I have never seen that at any price point. Had to ask for jam. Usually nice hotels give u a pot of nice jam. Nope. Got a plastic package of SUGAR FReE jam with sucralose, I asked for real jam and was told they only have this,, wtH?.. I then asked for peanut butter and got a packet that when I opened was all separated with oil pouring everywhere and had peanut stuff below. It was obviously way passed expired. I was stunned. My partner ordered French toast which was very small for the price and was supposed to come with maple syrup. Of course it was just cheap pancake syrup. That is illegal to state maple syrup and not supply it. Wow. We later were stupid enough to try to stop by the bar for a night cap,at 8 pm. No bartender. We sat there and 2 waitresses serving the only two tables just kept walking by us. No one said the bar is closed, ior we will be right there or can we help u nothing. We finally left. This is not a world class or evEn high end hotel in any way shape or form. Not to mention spelling errors in the menu and on the chalk board outside. Embarrassing . I stayed at the Lord Elgin Hotel and ate here for lunch while on a rush to leave town. The food at the resto was fine - nothing to complain about, good even. The thing I found amazing about this place was the service. I told the staff that I was in a hurry coming in and they did everything to help make my timing work. That included serving me as fast as possible and telling what food items would be quick to prepare and deliver. Very grateful. read more

I was in Ottawa for business and stayed at the Lord Elgin and this is located in then hotel. I ate at the bar which was very nice. It has nice chairs and lots of high top tables to sit at. My bartender was Stuart and he was super nice and friendly. He was attentive but not pushy. He was very patient with handling multiple customer's at once and was very informative about choices of drinks. I didn't order a cocktail but he was still nice. I ordered dinner which was the Seafood Linguine it was ok not great definitely needed some salt for sure. The sauce was definitely bland but it had a ton of seafood in it and the seafood was fresh and the have great fresh baked bread. I will definitely return read more

Located in the Lord Elgin Hotel, it has a great deck for people watching on a beautiful sunny day. It has a decent list of local beer on tap and pretty interesting appetizers. I tried the calamari and the hummus. Both were very good. The staff are very friendly and attentive which always helps make a deck visit more enjoyable. Overall a pretty good experience. read more

The restaurant is an ideal location within the Lord Elgin Hotel. The breakfast buffet is probably, if not one of the best I've ever had. A wide selection and everything was fresh, not runny or soggy. The wait staff were friendly and attentive to our needs. Our first night at the hotel we went down to the bar for a drink. The bar staff were amazing. Friendly, down to earth and wanting to go that extra mile. We were a bit hungry, but did not want to eat a large dinner portion. The bar manager made us a lunch chicken wrap for us to eat. He really did go above and beyond to accommodate us. Our last night at the hotel we decided to eat at the restaurant. The food was good, but in my opinion not worth the money we paid. The service was fantastic and we couldn't ask for a better waitress. The dessert they offer made up for the meal. I would definitely recommend the breakfast, bar and desserts, but would suggest another restaurant for dinner. There are a lot of great places in Ottawa to enjoy. read more

We stayed two nights at The Lord Elgin hotel. While staying at this location we went to this restaurant two days in a row. Service was very slow both times, they weren't busy either which was disappointing. Drinks took forever to arrive. I ordered the "Rib eye steak" and my partner ordered the "Filet Mignon" both steaks were very tough. Cooked exactly the way we wanted it, but impossible to cut. Although the manager was very understanding, sincere and accommodating. I will not be returning to this restaurant for any meals in the future. read more

During our second (and last) morning at the Lord Elgin, we had breakfast in the hotel's restaurant. We expected all would be fine, as we had dined there the previous morning. When the hostess seated us and said the server would be right over but no one appeared, that should have been a sign. Server did not come over, and hostess served us coffee. We chose the buffet option, and helped ourselves to food. The server came by, cleared a dirty plate, glanced at our half empty coffee cups and went on her way. She did this more than once. She refilled coffee cups all around us. We did speak with her, nicely? about the inattentive service and got a very half-hearted "Sorry about that." Stay away. There are options on Sparks for breakfast. No good reason to put up with poor service. read more

Came here when staying at the Lord Elgin hotel and was pleasantly suprised by the quality of service and food given the other yelp reviews. I sat at the bar where they were happy to serve me the full restaurant menu. The barman, Jerome, was particularly excellent - he gave great recommendations on the local area, food and wine. All of which were spot on. I even expressed an interest in local wines and was given a complimentary mini wine tasting session at the to help me decide. The Angel Falls Pinot Noir is excellent FYI. Executive Chef Brian Vallipuram did a fantastic job catering for my event last weekend! My guests were blown away by all the variety and high quality of food that was served. I am still receiving compliments from my guests! What I loved most about my experience with Chef Vallipuram is that you can tell he really has passion for his craft and made it a priority to have all the food made fresh the day of the event. Ordered the 'low calorie' breakfast because I felt like poached eggs. The toast arrived cold, and felt like it was made using month-old bread. I had to ask three times for butter and my water was never refilled, despite being empty and set on the edge of the table in plain view of the server who passed by multiple times. Stayed at the Lord Elgin hotel, which this restaurant is attached to, last weekend for a family trip. Out of convenience, since this is the only restaurant attached to the hotel, we went there for breakfast. I would first off like to say that this was a terrible experience and it was all because of the poor service and enormous wait times to get items. Pros: The food was good, when it did eventually get to our table and was hot. The decor is standard for such an establishment, if kind of dark with very few windows. Cons: Food is very slow to come, even if not very busy. Service is abysmally terrible, enough to warn people off of this restaurant. Review: We were greeted well enough by the hostess, who was very nice and showed us to our table. The restaurant's decor is okay and the place looked clean. Between that and the quality of the food, these are the only redeeming features of this establishment. After we were seated, our waitress came to take our order. I am not sure if there was a language barrier on her part or whether she was not very familiar with the items on their menu, but she asked us repeatedly to repeat items in our order until she finally understood what we were asking for. Also, the place was not loud at all for breakfast, so the ambient noise should not have been a problem. We ordered our drinks and food at the same time. After waiting for 20 minutes after placing our drinks order, our drinks arrived. Except not all items were present. After we finally understood that those were the only drinks she brought and she was not coming back with the rest, we tried looking for her to ask about the remaining drinks items. Unfortunately, the waitress was nowhere to be found (this is a constant theme for our whole experience, since the waitress was constantly absent). Thus, we had to chase down the hostess to get the remaining drinks items. After waiting for 40 minutes since we ordered our food, the food finally arrived. Except not all items arrived at once. I waited a further 10 minutes for the waitress to get back ... she did not get back, the hostess did ... with the wrong food item, because she presented me with an item I did not order instead of the item that I did order. I told her it was not what I ordered, so she took it away and let me know that she will chase down my order. After 10 more minutes, so 60 minutes of waiting in total, I finally got my food order, again from the hostess, since the waitress was absent. The food was okay, but nothing to write home about. At least it was hot, so we could eat it right away, after waiting for such a long time. Once we were done with our meal we wanted to get our bill. But after waiting for another 10 minutes with the waitress still nowhere to be found, we had to chase the hostess again to get our bill. When our waitress finally showed up again with our bill, it was a good thing I checked, since beside our ordered items, they had charged us for the food item that I did not order as well, even if I did not even have it. I pointed that out and she went back to get the bill fixed. Another 10 minutes of our time wasted. And throughout the process of getting such abysmally bad service, there were absolutely no apologies from the staff for the things they got wrong. Not even once. Not even a single "sorry". In total, it took us 1 hour and 45 minutes to get breakfast and get out of there. This delay affected our holiday plans outside of this restaurant experience as well, since it ate up our time and we had to skip a tour we wanted to do because we would not have enough time to complete it. To recap, the drinks were late, and they got it wrong. Had to chase our remaining items because the waitress was absent. The food was 40 minutes waiting for most, 60 minutes of waiting for myself, and they got the order on this wrong too. When the bill came, we were charged for items we did not order or consume. And the staff did not apologize even once. This was the worst breakfast dining experience that I have ever had, and would not recommend that anyone else experience it. I would recommend that possible patrons avoid this restaurant like the plague if even standard service is what they are looking for. Complete disappointment on that. read more

I was here for brunch in a group of 13. This place was chosen for its buffet-style brunch, though they do a la carte as well. We needed the meal to be easy and it was. I wouldn't come back for the food (standard, utilitarian, uninspired and not particularly tasty), the atmosphere (sterile at best), the service (surly), or the value (18 CAD was way overpriced for soggy French toast, McDonald's-grade "crepes"--actually pancakes--sausage, bacon, eggs, token smoked salmon, and--yawn--mixed melon). Grill 41 brunch is adequate for a business meeting or a quick breakfast on a business trip, but it seems unworthy of an institution such as the Lord Elgin. read more

My boyfriend and I went to Grill 41 on our couples getaway for my birthday. We stayed 2 nights at the hotel. We arrived, and were kind of half seated by the hostess, she kind of walked us half way and pointed to our table. We sat down and waited a solid 10 min before a waiter acknowledged us and asked if we had been tended to, and took our drink order. I got a cosmopolitan (which i was surprised was made with what seemed like grapefruit juice instead of cranberry juice but was still tasty) and my partner got one of their specialty drinks which was delicious, one of their pineapple based drinks.When we got our drinks our meal order was taken. Waiter didn't bother writing our order down. We ordered a spring roll to share which we never got, and I was a bit surprised they didn't have appetizer sized salads but waiter said we could order a half order so we did. Salads were both very good. The hostess delivered the main course after and we mentioned they'd forgotten the spring rolls. She was apologetic but this wasn't her fault we said just to cancel them. We both ordered the filet mignon, I ordered it rare and and my partner ordered his medium. Mine was done perfectly but my partners was still very rare. Meals came with mashed potatoes (very good) asparagus and carrots (also good and well cooked) and the steak sauce, we asked with peppercorn sauce (I thought was tasty, my partner thought it a bit too heavy on the rosemary) No server came to check up on how our meals were so my partner could have his steak cooked more to what he wanted (especially for 49$ a plate) in fact we saw no one till we wanted the bill. No drink top ups, no asking how the food was. 3 different people served us and it wasn't clear who was actually in charge of the table. The waiter took our food and drink order, the hostess brought the food out and another waitress gave us the bill. As a chef myself, i have to say this restaurant is poorly managed. The menu is very short, the food overpriced and the portions are small and very bland. I had one of their St. Paddy's Week specials. The appetizer was bacon wrapped scallops with rosemary butter. The scallops were overcooked and mostly tasteless, the bacon was slightly burnt and crunchy (beyond crispy) and the rosemary butter was very bland. The main dish was "surf and turf" ... the half NY strip was undercooked and under-spiced. The only saving grace was that the sear was done ok and it had the slightest hint of a finishing salt, other than that it was undercooked, underaged beef and quite bland. The "turf" (half of a lobster tail) was massively overcooked, had almost no flavour and was actually a bit burnt in places. It tasted like it sat around under a heat lamp for far too long. The desert was green creme-brule .. word cannot describe just how un-appetizing green creme brulee looks. It tasted ok -- the custard was a little lumpy and the sugar top was too thick and burnt. The food all had potential but it just seems like the regular chef was out sick and someone was nuking yesterday's leftovers. Decently plated, but that's about all it had going for it. All-in-all I would not go back again (which is unfortunate as I'm staying in the same hotel they are attached to). I wish I had read the reviews here before the wife and I dished out $100 and walked away hungry and un-satisfied. Went for dinner...ambience was somewhat dreary mostly due to type of lighting and the fact that you can see the big screen TV from everywhere in the restaurant which is probably not what you want for a romantic dinner. Terrible food. Hubby got an expensive burger, tasted like a frozen patty, he only ate half. My son got chow mein. Dry dry dry...looked like it had been sitting in a deli counter for 4 days...my steak (32 damn dollars) not cooked properly, raw onions thrown in with the mushrooms.....terrible and extemely overpriced!!! Avoid this place, wish i did read more
