This place is horrible. Not only did they completely mess up our to go order by giving us the completely wrong dishes (5 dishes total, only 1 was correct) but they also sent us RAW pork dumplings. Totally raw through and through. That alone would be bad enough to never wanna come here again. And on top of that, when I called to complain they refused to give us a refund (even for the raw meat). And to top everything off, I eventually just hung up the phone after going back and forth with the employee I had been speaking to, and then they called me back 20 min later 3 times. 3 freaking times. Those meals always started with a pot of tea and a bowl of noodles and ended with a bowl of pineapple chunks on the table. It's been decades (probably closer to half a century) since I've had those pre- and post-meal rituals replicated. Until yesterday. Is it fair to say that Fortune Garden is old school? Yes indeed, In fact, they have a March promotion that will reduce your bill by 10% in recognition of their 40th year in business. We stopped in for lunch on our way home from Maryland and had a very enjoyable time here. Our server Winnie was great, and when I ordered my Beef with Broccoli Lunch Special ($13.95) extra spicy she brought me a bowl of chili oil so I could design my own heat level. My Lunch Special included soup, an egg roll, a big portion of beef and broccoli and a nice scoop or two of brown rice (my choice among white or fried rice). The food was great -tons of flavor, nicely cooked beef and broccoli and a delicious non-greasy sauce. Half of it went home with me for the next day. My wife's Chicken and Broccoli was $12.95 and got similar high marks from her. And those yummy pineapple chunks ended our meal on a high and sweet note. read more

Hot tea, crunchy noodles with duck sauce and hot mustard sauce are placed on the table like back in the day. The pancakes included with my moo shu chicken were the best I'd ever had anywhere. They didn't stick together, were hearty and thicker than the usual pancakes I've had else where. The moo shu was fresh and delicious. Equally, the dinner combos ordered by others were also very good. Wanton soup was good too. They give pineapple at the end. They were very busy the night before lunar new year. They had loads of take out orders. The only negative, the bathroom could use updating and cleaning. The outside lights from the parking lot are annoying, I'm old. I recently came across this restaurant on Yelp and decided to give it a try. The restaurant was clean and well sanitized,great service and plenty of parking available. For lunch I had egg rolls and wonton soup which it met my expectations, my main dish was chicken lo mein noodles which was pretty decent. The food came out fast and the portions were generous and satisfying. I can't wait to go back and try another dish. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. Ps. Since the new owner took over the quality of the food has dropped. I say this as someone who has been coming here for over 30 years. I was back at Fortune Garden for lunch, and I'll be damned if my experience wasn't exactly the same as last time. Got the ribs and pork fried rice. First, the crispy noodles that were served were just short of being stale; in fact some of them were wet! The ribs were not bad but the rice was dry, with an occasional tiny piece of pork mixed in. I had to add a few packets of duck sauce to make it edible. Compared to the way it used to be served with nice chunks of pork and a better consistency, this was a pale imitation. BTW, they still simultaneously play the TV while random music is blaring over the radio, which remains as annoying as ever. I used to love coming here for lunch, and I always enjoyed it a lot. However I'm done with Fortune Garden, and even though it means going out of my way I'll be heading out to Ocean Empire. read more

Fortune Garden looks like a dump from the outside and the surrounding strip mall will win you no plaudits for style but the food is outstanding, always fresh and well prepared. Not lost on me is a peculiar anomaly that afflicts most Chinese joints who strive for over-the-top atmospherics - they almost always disappoint thinking that an architectural head fake will compensate for a subpar kitchen. My preference in this cuisine is to stay close to ground and let the food do the talking without an interpreter. Fortune Garden speaks very loudly where it counts. read more

I'd been here several times for lunch and generally had a positive view of this place...so I came here for New Year's Eve with family and it was mostly a big disappointment. Food came out lukewarm, with bland sauce, and shrimp that did not taste fresh (or even clean, for that matter). Now, it was busy for the holiday of course, both in the restaurant and with take-out orders...but that is no excuse for what was a pretty bad meal. Pass It By Three of us have eaten here two times recently. My friend has been a customer for about 20 years. After this last time she said she will not go back. The portions are very large, which is a plus. Last time my friend ordered something that was fried. It came out dried and hard as a rock. It was literally inedible. This time, I ordered the fried dumplings. The taste wasn't bad but the wrappers were entirely too thick. My pineapple chicken (which I've had at other restaurants) was sitting in a pool of oil and when touched my hand was immediately covered with grease. The breading did not stay on and the chicken was dry. Their idea of pineapple sauce was the red sweet & sour sauce with a few chunks of pineapple thrown in. Had dinner with a friend yesterday. The reasons this review is two stars: they didnt charge me for my beer and the wait staff service was good. Now for the bad. This restaurant unbeknownst to many is under new management. We ordered sizzling goba chicken, sesame beef and house specail pan fried lo mein. The goba chicken was not 'sizzled' in front of us, and it came out colder than usual. The sesame beef and lo mein came in much smaller servings than before, about 30% less than what I had since the last time i was here before Christmas. Not only that, the sesame beef had too much sauce and was not crispy like in the past. The shrimp on the house special pan fried lo mein went shrank in size as well. Looks like the new owners are skimping on the quality of their food and only care about the $$$. Its sad because me and many of my friends and family have been coming here for years and for a long time it was the best full service chinese restaurant in Rockland. I also think the owner overheard me tell my friend that I am giving this place a bad Yelp review thats why my beer was free. With this experience me and my friend will not be coming back here and we are sure to warn our other friends and family about eating here. read more
