Was hankering for some Chinese & Fortune Garden got the nod this afternoon. Ordered Personal Combos #1 & #4 and hurried home to grub. We were just starting on our meals when I heard my wife make a weird sound. I looked up and she was pulling a 6" long hair out of her mouth. Dinner was definitely over & those take-out containers went right into the garbage. I don't care how that hair ended up in my wife's food, just that it was there. That was freakin' nasty! For those that say the hair belonged to my wife, nope. We did not take the food out of the containers to eat. This is another local eatery that will never see our business again... ever. read more

It was our first time here. A colleague and I came here to eat after work - late lunch, early dinner kind of thing. We ordered our food from the "lunch menu". The food came between 5-10 mins considering it was starting to get busy. They give pretty big portions that we packed our leftovers for tomorrow's lunch. It's a decent size restaurant to eat in. It makes sense for a large family group to spend time . But if you're looking for quality of Food I do not recommend. We order BBQprk and it was almost impossible to bite through. Zero taste of bbq, dry and cold. (You can tell it's been reheated multiple times). The kung pao chicken is not at all as it should taste. Tasted like vinegar mixed with extra spicy sweet and sour, majority of plate was celery and carrots. And peanuts tossed on top .Fried rice was missing so much seasoning and garlic as well as the chow mein. Zero flavor just oil . We left with my lips tingling itchy which never happens. read more

Whenever I'm in the valley I like to stop here for Chinese food. The jumbo noodle soup is great and it's the best one is when spicy. The salt n pepper fish is one of my favorites too. The service can be hit or miss but that's every spot i feel. read more

And LOTS of it! Maybe there was 5 carrot pieces also and some onion... HUGE HUGE portions .. They definitely need to downsize the quantity and increase the quality. I Ordered also ...1/2 order of chicken fried rice that went to waste as it was entirely too much and I was traveling thru so it had to be tossed I believe it was a full order.. it HAD to be!! I really am not one who usually complains about large portions, but this was over the top and decreased the quality of the food with all that celery !! I won't come again as the flavor was weak AF .. All the times I have eaten here I have not had a single issue food quality-wise and I find the dining area nice and clean (they tend to clean tables right away or any spills/accidents) but it can get congested and crowded at times on their busy days. I recommend calling on the phone to see how long is their waiting time before getting takeout or catering services for bigger parties (their food tends to be plentiful and there's usually leftovers when we order from these guys ). read more

3.5/5 stars We have tried every Chinese restaurant in El Centro and were going back to the first one when a friend mentioned Fortune Garden! We drove home from San Diego and decided to try it for lunch. The Yelp reviews are scary-food is good but service is horrible. Well, lunch is safer than dinner so not to eat much if the food is meh. We used the GPS to find it and found the turn but not the place. There's a Johnny Carino's and a Chili's. And then we see this beautiful stone brick building and light shone down on it! It is modern and nice. Hope sprung! We got there a little after noon and there were quite a few cars already and more coming in behind us. I hurried out to snap my Check in Photo and go in to get our names in. No wait! We get a nice booth and they take our drink order and leave menus. The place is huge and it was pretty full with many families already. There is a good sized parking lot which is good because this place gets busy! But so far, we were not seeing what all the talk of poor service was about. We were helped immediately by the hostess with a smile. The menu is good sized with lunch specials and family meals and then the regular entrees. Cool, we see quite a few things we like. Our server came by to bring water with lemon (our drink order) and took our order since we were ready. We had the Lunch specials because we weren't that hungry. My husband chose C-chicken Chop suey with BBQ pork and fried rice and I selected J-Fish in black bean sauce with an egg roll and steamed rice, my request, instead of the fried rice. We kept seeing giant plates of food going around to tables and it looked good. They brought out small plates but we ordered just the lunch special which isn't usually family style. Then our order came. It was good sized amounts of food. Plenty for us for 2 meals. I took the egg roll off the top so it stayed crisp. It was good-no meat but it had good flavor. Even my hubs liked it and he usually doesn't like anything but the big greasy ones with pork like he would get in New York. Next time, I will see if they have a dipping sauce because the red bottle on the table next to the hot mustard was more of a BBQ sauce. It was unusual with the hot mustard I put in it and dipped the egg roll into. The chicken chop suey had really good flavor and unlike the other places, actually had quite a few chunks of chicken. Not a lot but better. The fish was lightly coated and in a good black bean sauce. Maybe not the best I've ever had but I would definitely order it again. The fried rice was just ok-brown sauce on rice with, what I guess are, frozen carrots & peas. The steamed rice was the better choice. Overall, we are thrilled. The service was excellent-and they were extremely busy. Our server, Lupe, was wonderful and checked on us to be sure all was good and bring to go boxes. Other servers refilled water and the young man bussing tables was wonderful to take my plate with the BBQ sauce-hot mustard experiment and give me a clean one. As I told Lupe, this is our spot. I have to admit, I was losing hope to get decent Chinese without driving all the way down to Mexicali. But Fortune Garden brought us the fortune of good food. I definitely recommend it and we will be back for dinner and to try new things. We held off giving a 4 stars until we try more things but from the looks of it, that will be soon. This place used to be the best! Ate here every week or 2 for 10 years. But what a waste of money and time now. I ordered take out on 11/01/2023 at 6:30 pm. Vegetable shrimp, Mongolian chicken, and vegetable chow main. The veg shrimp had little flavor but the shrimp were large and vegetables plenty and fresh. The chow mein had plenty of fresh vegetables and cooked enough to have some crunch but tender at same time. But, it too, was almost tasteless and to eat it I had to add soy sauce and hot mustard, which until recently I never had to do with their food. The Mongolian chicken was horrible! It was dry and tough and flavorless. Totally inedible. I called the resturant to complain and the male owner said "there is nothing I can do about it now, but how about I promise to give you excellent service next time you come in?" I said "how about you make me another order right now and I bring this chicken back to you". After some discussion with his wife, he agreed. When I returned, the female owner was at the counter and did not acknowledge me for several minutes. I finally told her my name and she said my order was being prepared. A few minutes later the male owner comes out of the kitchen, plops my order on the counter in front of me and walks away without saying a word. In turn I plopped the chicken I was returning down on the counter in front of the wife and walked out with my new order. I did have some of the new Mongolian chicken and although it was not as dry and tasted better, it still was not as good as it should have been. Their quality of food and service have gone down hill and after eating here the last 3 times and receiving tasteless food and now bad service with attitude to match we will never go back. We threw the food away. Just looking at it made me sick and angry as we just couldn't eat it after such an horrible experience . The wait staff all look stressed, rushed, and ill at ease. I don't know if I had this meal before but I was expecting fresh just fried battered pieces of fresh pork tenderloin with bell peppers, onion and pineapple. I got home expecting a delicious meal, I opened containers and found old battered pieces of what the restaurant calls pork.I tried to find the bell peppers, onions and pineapple. I found 4 pieces of large chunks of pineapple so hard that I had to cut them in real small pieces to be able to swallow them. I've been coming to this place for many, many years. It was always okay, however, this last time, it wasn't. The server wasn't very attentive and the food wasn't all that great. We had to wait on our server a lot and even had to get up and ask for her. They brought my mom's coffee without sugar or cream. By the time the sugar and cream was brought, the coffee was cold. Hmm, I used to come here for veggie soup and white rice. Well, I asked for brown rice, but was sent back to the hotel with fried rice instead. When I walked back to return it, they looked at me like I was crazy since it was obvious that it was ME that was mistaken because if I looked at he fried rice, its obviously brown....ish. I give this zero stars. By far the worst mexi/American CHINESE food ever. Pot stickers that are supposed to be pan fried are microwaved. Breading on all breaded food was rock hard. The pork in the fried rice was so dry it surely was from leftover. When our server came to place the bill, we told him exactly why are played were hardly touched. Our server made no mention of this to management so no alternative was even offered. Service is like an assembly line as the food is probably cooked ahead in huge batches.
