Fortune Express is solid for what it is: a cheap, neighborhood Chinese takeout spot. Service is fast, portion sizes are large, and the food is always decent--and sometimes even better than good. read more

I'm actually surprised by the low ratings on yelp. I know this place has much higher ratings on doordash. Perhaps because the food is a great value and is reasonably tasty. When it comes to the actual location, there is much to be desired. But this is a takeout place and has been in the neighborhood for something like 25 years. They are very consistent and reliable and a great go to spot place if you want to get something fast and delicious and won't break the bank. There are menu is also extremely extensive and they have a very wide range of selections. read more

The steamed dumplings are good! Take out is the way to go. Food is prepared fast and is affordable.

The pork chow mein tonight really hit the spot. I ordered soup too but haven't had it yet; I've been ordering from this place forever and know it will be good! Quick delivery too. read more

I've lived in the neighborhood for 20 years and never tried Fortune Express, based on an experience with another Chinese place in the neighborhood back when I moved in. I figured they were all the same. But when saw the solid reviews on Yelp I decided to give it a try. It is totally solid, and might be great if I order to my tastes. I got the sesame chicken, which had great texture. I like a bit more flavor, and will order accordingly in the future. The cold peanut noodles were tasty and the prices were very reasonable. I plan to make my way through the menu and find the best items and make them part of my rotation. read more

Has Fortune Express changed management or cook all of a sudden?! That is literally the only excuse I can think of for how bad our food was the other night. The General Tso was FULL of garlic, and the sesame noodles were sesame paste light & soy sauce heavy - both of these are dishes we LOVE and have ordered repeatedly over the past couple of years. I'm almost afraid to go back... read more

It's been almost two years since the last time I ordered from this place, so I wanted to give an update: still good. I still order the dumplings and the crispy eggplant, which are as good as I remember. The dumplings are quite doughy if you get them steamed, but there's a lot of filling in them. The eggplant is breaded and fried if I'm not mistaken, and I do wish it had more eggplant and less breading (though there's definitely plenty of the former). I'm seeing negative things of the delivery guy in other reviews: all I can say is my experience is much better. He called when he got here, I went downstairs, and he gave me my food. He seemed very friendly to me, but obviously I can't speak to other people's experiences. Given how much I like what I order here, I should probably branch out and stop ordering the same two things every time. Maybe next time - and there will definitely be a next time. read more

I'm Disabled with mobility issues. If I'm ordering delivery it's usually because I'm too ill to stand or walk let alone prepare food. I have repeatedly stated in all of my online orders to restaurants and through third party services that it's difficult for me to come to my building's door and that I need the food brought up to my apartment. There is ample parking my area and I'm willing to tip above the standard for this service because I understand that a quick delivery is important for drivers' income. The delivery driver for Fortune Express not only didn't bring the food into the building, but called me more times than necessary and yelled at me because I didn't get downstairs to the main entrance as quickly as he'd like. Fortune Express' food is decent, but they treat Disabled People like shit. I won't order from them again. read more

Rude people, slow service, awful food. Do yourself a favor and don't order from this place. They claimed my order would get here in a half hour but it took 75 minutes. When I called after an hour to check on it, the woman was SO rude and just yelled (It's on the way!) and hung up on me! I'm a big fan of crab rangoons and their's were awful. They did not use wonton wrappers - they used some kind of bread made with butter. Whoever heard of butter in Chinese cooking! I'm not even sure why I gave this place 2 stars instead of one. It's rare that a place drives me to write a bad review. read more

Ordered my food online and delivery was pretty fast. That was the only highlight of this place. When the driver arrived, Lee, the first and only thing out his mouth while he approached my door was "Cash Tip". I don't know if he was going to hold my food hostage or not if I didn't address his tip seeing how he wouldn't hand me my food until I told him he was getting a tip. Smh I ordered the Lemon Chicken. The chicken was a soggy lightly fried piece of meat on lettuce. The sauce was actually ok. I also ordered the Half Smoke Sub which literally tasted like dirt. This is not an exaggeration it tasted like dirt on top of the fact it looked like a pale hotdog like mystery meat in sausage casing. I threw it all away as to prevent the likely food poisoning I probably was get if I ingested whatever that was that Lee delivered. Eat here at your own risk. read more

I'm baffled that this place received more than 3 stars. Every dish I tried here has been ... awkward. Let me explain, you don't order Chinese delivery from this place unless you are really hungry, really lazy/sick, in other words, you know this is a "last resort" place. So you call, or Seamless it, ordered, and they deliver fast and they are very nice people. But when you dig in, you find it taste awful. This is your last resort, and you don't want to starve yourself. So you have just enough to keep you fed, and throw the rest out because any more would just make you throw up.... That about sums up the place. read more

This place has some of the worst customer service and food ever! 1. The person taking your order doesn't greet you and doesn't properly answer the phone. 2. Delivery drivers ask for a tip before they even give you a chance to pay them. 3. The food is horrible tasting I only gave them a chance because where I wanted was closed. 4 whoever cooks the food needs to be fired. I purchased a pizza the pizza was burnt but when I received it it was cold, cheese was any and everywhere, it was not properly cut so when you pick up a slice you are tearing threw several others. I contacted the site where I purchased from through them and they issued me a refund for other reasons and the driver calls me and yells at me and then comes to the house hours after he delivered the food. I've included pictures of the terrible pizza. read more

Ordered their crispy seasame chicken dinner and it was delicious. Crispy and tender, with a delicious sweet sauce that was almost spicy. The cashier was super friendly - a welcomed change... oh the long lost art of quality customer service. They did however, mess up my order. They gave me a soup rather than the crab wontons I ordered. Later that night, I checked my phone and I had four missed calls... they had tried to deliver my crab wontons and were extremely apologetic. Seriously? All these other carry outs wouldn't have gone through all that trouble. +1 star. Good (carryout) food, excellent service and super cheap. Definitely a fan! Ps. like that other Yelper said, don't expect authentic Chinese food, but for carryout food, this is a local treasure. read more

Great food, fast delivery. I'm a big fan of the menu, which covers all of the bases. The liver special is recommended.

I don't know if it is something about me, because everyone seems to like them. The hubsters and I ordered sweet and sour chicken, mandarin chicken, chicken chow mein, and a couple egg rolls. I understand that there are some east coast-west coast differences between what is considered chow mein (and being originally from the WC, our perceptions might be off), but there was not a single noodle, crispy or not, in our chow mein. It was cabbage. A big bowl of cabbage. Both the mandarin chicken and sweet/sour chicken tasted like the sauces came out of a can, and the food was pretty flavorless. The only redeeming factor were the egg rolls, which were crunchy and good, and the delivery guy calling us when he actually got to our apartment, not when he was 15 minutes away. I'll definitely look somewhere else next time--the chow mein was super disappointing. read more

All I can say is their Chicken Livers and rice and gravy with onions, mushrooms and green peppers has me coming back! I like all their food honestly, I haven't had any problems with my food. Also the owners are extremely nice. read more

OMG...so good. This place is in the neighborhood and I have passed by it a million times thinking "no way would I ever order there". Tonight I am craving Chinese, and give it a shot based on Yelp reviews. So glad I did! Steamed vegetable dumplings were great, and Hunan Chicken arrived hot (think steam coming off it) and amazingly tasty. Crisp fresh vegetables were a welcome bonus. This is my new neighborhood go-to place for Chinese food read more

I am giving 3 stars because this is like all of the millions of Asian/American fast food/take outs in inner cities...I have lived in the neighbor for over a year now and this was the very first place I found that delivered.. Therefore I became a regular customer.. Order is always correct and super fast delivery. However, today when attempting to place an order the lady who barely speaks English who lacks good customer and is usually rude kept hanging up on me and when she would answer she would say "I'll call you back" and hang up again. Not to mention the convenient language barrier. When there is an issue suddenly they don't understand a word you are saying but say that they've cheated you out of some thing they become instantly articulate. I sincerely do not think it is fair to be a business owner and not treat customers with the utmost respect. I became instantly annoyed because she was extremely rude.. I was so angry that I literally drove there to confront her personally. Her explanation was she had customers in front of her and could not take my order. She then acknowledges that I "was" a regular customer while apologizing...She also had a nerve to tell me that she was ready to take my order. ABSOLUTELY not is what I told her... The type of service we receive from many of these places is less than acceptable and they're usually rude and not courteous. What hurts and upset me the most is had this been an American owned and operated business NONE of this would even be allowed and it would get shut down for the most minute circumstance. Unfortunate that they have now lost a faithful customer due to poor communication and service. read more

I'll assume you know this place is not glamorous. That's not what we're after, though, is it? Didn't think so. I get one dish here, and I'd get it twice a week if "deep fried" were a food group. It's nothing unusual, but it hits the spot, and so reliably that I doubt I'll ever order anything else. If you need to eat some feelings, this is your dish: General Tso's Tofu. Extra spicy. Do yourself a favor and get the sauce on the side, to preserve the crispy exterior of your tofu. (You're welcome.) read more

I ordered from this place once before and it was average but now it was so dissatisfying to eat. I ordered 5 piece wings, combination lo mein and french fries. So many complaints about my order. The french fries weren't even salted. The wings were disappointing in flavor and size. The rice looked undercooked. The worst part was the combination lo mein, right after my father took a bite, instant vomiting. I took a bite myself and I spit it out instantly. It taste like it was dropped on the floor and put it into a microwave and then served. I will never order here again. I don't recommend unless you want food poisoning! I wish i could give zero stars.... read more

This place is disgusting. I am no Chinese food snob, I enjoy most cheap Chinese food. However, this place is on another level of terrible. I ordered general tso chicken and the pupu platter. When I received the food the pupu platter was scatted throughout the bag because they did not use a container. Next, everything smelled like fish. I decided to take everything and and bit into the fried shrimp - raw batter exploded in my mouth. Almost puked. I tossed it in the trash. Then I bit into the pork rib - tasted like fish. Bit into the eggroll - tasted like fish. I contacted the 'restaurant' back for a refund and they said they would pick up the food. I said cool. The delivery guy came back and examined the bag and said no refund because I ate the food. I took a total of 5 bites. I told him the food was raw or tasted rotten. He said no refund and got angry. These people are gross. Going to contact DC food and safety. read more

The woman that works there is rude. Double check your order and make sure you are charged the appropriate price. I've had microwave Chinese food that is better and the facilities are extremely dirty so I would be skeptical. read more

I think we can all agree that f you are seeking "authentic" chinese, you can rule out any place that lists "french fries" as an appetizer. Sorry, neighbors, we just live in the wrong neighborhood for fancy chinese. But don't let that stop you. This place is damn tasty! Excellent dishes include: 1) Chicken lo mein - same price as veggie lo mein (awesome!) and stir-fried in some delicious sauce that tastes slightly peanut-flavored to me. 2) Moo Goo Gai Pan - delicious, great mix of veggies. 3) General Tso's Chicken - tastes fresh and is tender (not chewy with a hard exterior like some places). The only downside... Most of the time, deliver takes about 35 minutes. But about 20% of the time, delivery takes a little over an hour. My french fries end up soggy and wilted, and I just don't like to wait that long for chinese food. The regular driver, Lee, is always friendly. (Yeah, I order several times a week, so we are on a first name basis. Don't judge me!) I think that sometimes they just get backed up. Now, for my EXTRA SPECIAL SECRET... Do not order over the phone. Just don't. There is an awesome website called eat24hours.com that you can use to order online. Prices are the same, but once you have an account on eat24hours, you get coupons emailed to you ALL THE TIME (at least once a week) that let you take $2-$5 OFF the price of your order. I love that website. (Since I'm so nice, I will go ahead and tell you one of the codes. VIPdessert. Bam - $5 off. FIVE FREAKING DOLLARS!) For the code alone, I deserve a "useful" rating, right??? :-) read more

I ate here a couple times. I once had pizza and had rat droppings in my crust. I took the pizza back and got my money. Don't eat here.

When I was at CUA, my roommates and I always ordered our Chinese from Fortune Express... its the best, I love it. So, today with it being so cold and windy out, I decided that the best course of action would be to order from my good friends at FE. The didn't disappoint either. The beef and broccoli was very flavorful and the broccoli was perfect (isn't there something delicious about broccoli in Chinese food?) But my favorite thing to get is the General Tso's Chicken Dinner Combo. Its easily enough for two meals, includes fried/white rice and and egg roll all for like $8. The chicken itself has just enough kick, but isn't too hot... YUM! Oh and quick delivery... less than 30 minutes. read more

A bit disappointed in todays order. The food was accurate and quickly delivered however some of my items had either a weird smell, appearance or taste. I'm not sure how good this place is on the regular but today did not go well. I'm not too sure how you could miss up these simple items but buyer think twice! B-Egg drop soup, okay C- Vegetable fried rice, weird smell & overcooked vegetables C+ Plain fried rice, wird smell & appeared as it was burnt read more

STAPLE in dumpling this evening. Alerted the restaurant. Restaurant needs to slow down and focus on quality control.

We have enjoyed take out from Fortune Express for years. We Love the sesame chicken and the dan dan noodles. They also have tasty egg rolls. While it's true the woman who answers the phone doesn't greet you, I think it's more a product of her English skills than disposition as she's friendly when you pick the food up. Give them a try. Great neighborhood take out spot. read more

Food is just ok, service is terrible. Fried dumplings were doughy, though the filling is tasty. Other items were just way too sweet and greasy, even for "Americanized" Chinese food. The oddest thing was that we ordered Chow Mein (crispy noodles), which they apparently did not have, so they just sent us vegetables with steamed rice instead (but still charged us for the Chow Mein). When I called to ask, the woman was very rude, yelled at me, then hung up. Though the price is right, the food is mediocre at best and the service is comically bad, so I'll try another place next time. read more

Maybe I was just really, really craving Chinese, but this stuff was great. I had the Sesame Chicken dinner - HUGE portion, and really yummy. It's my go to Chinese carry out. I've in the neighborhood my whole life. No, they don't excel at flowery customer interactions, but as a regular I find the efficient, fast, and a great deal for the money. They are kind to me and do special requests without issue. This isn't fine dining, but for a mom and kids it rocks! read more

I live in BFE, DC (a.k.a. Takoma). Barely any one delivers to this area! So going out on a limb, I tried Fortune Express through the Foodler website. I was very pleasantly surprised- having lowered my expectations substantially (not because any preconceived notions about this specific place, but because I've had such little luck with DC carry-outs in general). I ordered the Sweet and Sour Pork dinner special. The pork was great-- just what you'd expect for this American-Chinese junk food classic. Doughy batter, toothy pork and a neon-pink sauce! Love it. The portion was insanely big for a dish under $6, with tons of white rice. The rice was too sticky for Chinese take-out. The egg roll was standard. But the price-point more than makes up for any shortcomings. I also got combination lo mein, which was chock full of fresh veggies. It had that smoky dirty wok flavor that I love. And I ordered hot and sour soup-- it was VERY good. A light, peppery broth, with chicken, tofu and fresh mushrooms. This might be the best version of the soup that I've had from a DC take-out. I will definitely order again. Oh-- and prompt, quick delivery. Again, I used Foodler to order. read more

Pretty terrific, as far as delivery goes. ~$7 combos, delivery in under 30 minutes, solid lo mein actually seemed fresh. Quite a discovery. My new go-to delivery spot in Northwest, now that the inferior North Sea has overhauled its menu. read more

In this part of Northwest, nearly every corner has a Chinese / Chicken / Pizza / Fish restaurant, and most of them aren't just forgettable--they're to be avoided like the plague. I originally lumped Fortune Express with George's, Seafood & Things, and the others, but others' Yelp reviews made me try it. If you see George's from the sidewalk, there's absolutely no reason you'd expect it to be any different: it's got the same empty waiting area, the same ads for long-distance cards, and the same glass separating you from the people working there. That's where it ends. The Hunan vegetables was fantastic, and the vegetables and tofu was unremarkable but decent. That's light years beyond any other Chinese food in the neighborhood. Moreover, the mushrooms were fresh mushrooms (a rare find instead of canned ones), and the vegetables were crisp and delicious. There's no way I'll stop going to Joe's Noodle House, but for times I want delivery, Fortune Express is the place to go. read more

Decent Chinese, nothing special. Veggie lo mein was subpar with little flavor, but General Tso's chicken was good although it was drowning in sauce. Delivery was pretty quick, about half an hour, and my food was still piping hot. read more

Giving Fortune Express one last shot - we've ordered here before and it's always been a mixed experience. On the one hand, the woman who answers the phone is not friendly or helpful and seems eager to get off the phone regardless if whether I'm finished ordering or paying with a card vs. cash. Alternatively, I love their General Tso's chicken and the egg rolls always taste fresh and crunchy. I ordered some new items tonight - spicy chicken lo mein and egg drop soup so we'll see how that goes but I'm posting this rating pre-taste because regardless of how good the lo mein is the service, and my past experiences, warrant Fortune Express 3/5 stars. read more
