I also had a baguette with salmon and cheese and it was alright. The people we very friendly. I'm not 100% sure they are alcohol but I saw a "to go" pack of three craft beer. This place seems really good for lunch. And as a tidbit, apparently pao de deus is like the Chinese bun "Kai Mei Pau", but if say I'm enjoying the Portuguese version a bit better. It's coconut is primarily on the top and it's not as filled with butter. The Chinese kind typically had coconut in the middle and feels like a lot of butter and coconut mixed. Just an observation.

Fábrica da Nata focuses on doing one thing extremely well: Portuguese custard tarts…read more The pastéis de nata are served fresh and warm, with the signature caramelized top that gives way to a smooth, creamy custard center. The custard strikes a great balance -- rich and eggy but not overly sweet. The pastry shell is where these really shine: thin layers of laminated dough baked until they're deeply golden and crisp. The result is that perfect textural contrast: crackly pastry on the outside and silky custard inside. Like most Portuguese pastry shops, the setup is straightforward. You order at the counter, the service is quick, and the focus is on getting the tarts to you while they're still warm from the oven. Cinnamon and powdered sugar are available to sprinkle on top, which adds a nice extra layer of flavour. Lisbon has many places competing for the title of best pastel de nata, but Fábrica da Nata holds its own. The quality is consistent, the tarts are fresh, and it's an easy stop whether you're looking for a quick snack or a traditional Portuguese pastry with coffee.

Our Tuk Tuk driver insisted we had to try this bakery before leaving Sintra…read more It's in a beautiful area with lots of character; however, the lines were long and the ordering area packed. We decided to pick up pastries and not wait for a table. The chocolate treat was absolutely a 10/10 and the pastel de nada was almost as good as the founding pastel de nada place. Really a 9/10! I could not find more of those delicious chocolate treats at any other bakery in Portugal.

Let me nail it - the pillow type Travesseiro flaky puff pastry we had was cheap crap. Rubbish…read more The pastry is machine rolled. It was made with cheap vegetable oil and had artificial flavouring in it. If you are expecting to be wowed you'll be quite disappointed. I really wouldn't take another for free. We also got what turned out to be a lousy coffee. We were herded into the take - out part by our guide but as I looked in the window, for customers sitting in, there was a proper coffee machine. For some strange reason the travel guides push tourists into this place by the hundred to buy saying it's old, legendary. It might be old. It might have been good once but today it's all spin. I can't speak to any other pie or pastry here but this one is billed as their famous creation then it is reasonable to believe that it's all vegetable oil, white sugar and artificial flavouring all the way. We were in Vigo Spain in a little bakery a few months ago and their sweet treats were stunningly good but this place is lousy.

I thought after Pasteis de Belem I wasn't going to get a pastel de nata that good again, but that's…read moreuntil I came here. The one from here was absolutely amazing. The layers of pastry on the outside were super thick - the most amount of layers I've seen on the double-digit ones that I've eaten. This makes the crunch earth-shattering, but still so easy to bite through. The pastry layers cascade down into the center, creating ripples of individual crunches along the way that is so immensely satisfying to consume. But what's truly spectacular is the inside. Upon the first bite, the custardy center oozes out like molten lava. You better make sure you have a plate under this, because the bright yellow goo is as addicting to taste as it is dangerous to your hands or clothing. The flavor is simply perfect - just the right amount of sweetness, citrus, and egginess. It's honestly unbelievable how good and irresistible this is. Comparing it to Pasteis de Belem, I think I would actually put this slightly over. The extra layers and the more liquidy center just do it for me. That's an iconic place, but comparing simply on what I liked better, I think this takes the cake (or tart). Overall, pretty close to the best baked good I've ever had. 9.75/10

Based on the items I ordered, everything was just passable. Maybe I'm not really appreciating the difference in textures between similar pastries in different countries, but even compared to several other bakeries and cafes in Lisbon, this was my least favorite. (Overall outside of pasteis de nata, I found pastries and baked goods in Portugal to be a bit drier, breadier, and sweeter than some other countries.) The chocolate croissant I ordered used melted chocolate sprinkles on top and inside, and the bread was laminated on the outside but kinda dense and dry on the inside, no airy pockets, just bready. The palmier tasted a bit stale, like when a crispy cookie has been sitting out and softened. The croquettes were average. The espresso was pretty normal. I sat outside since it was a nice day, they had a number of tables and patrons dining outside. They seemed to be understaffed bc it took a while for the server to come out and take my order, though the food came pretty quickly once ordered. Inside it's a very old-school feel, very ornate with many mirrors and liquor shelves along the wall. Not sure about prices now though will say in 2022 they were very reasonable.

The dough is fermented for 24 hours. All this care and extra work makes it markedly different from your average bread made with mass-produced flour in faster method. One bite of the sample, and gosh, this really is a bread that put most bread to sample. The crust is so crispy but not hard, the inside crumb is light, very bouncy and flavorful with the tanginess of a good sourdough. They have about 4 different types of bread. We expect the bread to be more expensive but it's just 2-3€ for a large, hefty loaf. The staff is very nice and speaks excellent English. Sadly, the bakery is only a retail/wholesale outlet. There is no seat or table for you to enjoy the bread right there. We did take a few loaves for later.
