Open 36 years and still going strong. It's not huge or too fancy but they must be doing something right to still be around. We started off by sharing San-Shin soup for two which was a delicious beef broth with thin cuts of chicken, beef, small shrimp and several veggies. The menu was very extensive so it was hard to choose an entree but we both ended up ordering Seafood Lovers plate which had shrimp, scallops, lobster, king crab and veggies in a light sauce. Orange chicken (not on the menu) was decent. Service was decent, but young wait staff. Food service was a little slow (probably needed to unfreeze the duck and red snapper). I think I had high hopes for this place because of the yelp reviews. My heart sank when we got our food bc the duck we ordered died in vain as it was VERY DRY. And so did the crispy fish which was labeled as Szechwan spiced but tasted more like fried fish with hot and sour sauce. And not to mention there was no sight of a single Asian person monitoring the place to make sure everything is in proper order or tasted the least bit as described in the menu. There are so many dishes that are good but I ALWAYs want the hot and sour soup(it is so so good!!) The 5 flavor shrimp and anything with the black bean sauce is amazing!! Ordered via GrubHub. I was hungry, sick, and wanted to get back to bed, so I unfortunately didn't read their many bad reviews before placing my order. The food arrived in the estimated delivery window. Chow mein had no noodles in it, lukewarm, very small portion compared to the mountains of brown rice they put in. The rice itself was very dry and flavorless, and arrived almost refrigerator-cold. Egg drop soup was exactly what I expected, same you can get from any Chinese restaurant, but even though I like it, it's not enough to save a star. What really disappointed me was that they forgot to include my chicken fried rice. When I called to find out what happened, they immediately tried to blame the delivery driver for taking it. Which was distasteful to me-- even if he DID, throwing someone else under the bus isn't something you should do with so little hesitation. Didn't apologize, didn't offer to make it right, just gave me an instant "it's not our fault!" Proceeded to give me a story about how he had three witnesses that the fried rice made it into the bag-- which makes no sense. Why would that be the responsibility of three people? Overall, the guy at Formosa was very impolite, unhelpful, and made it clear he wasn't happy to be talking to a customer. Why do you even run a restaurant? Sell it to someone who isn't negligent and save yourself and every one of your customers grief. Anyway, I called GrubHub, they called the driver, driver just said he delivered what he was given. Really great food, I love to go there and get their Duck occasionally. The crispy duck is tasty with the sweet plum sauce but the Mandarin Duck is my personal favorite. I'd highly recommend it if you've never tried duck before. The service here is very good, waitresses were very attentive and friendly. The food came out quicker than I expected (duck plates ask for 15-20min for preparation) and the portions are generous enough to fill up a to-go box. My experience with Formosa has always been great food and service wise, the only reason I give it 4 stars is because the atmosphere and decor are very outdated and the place is somewhat dirty. The carpet is stained black from years of heavy tread and the floor is littered with dust, trash, and food. The place is great but could definitely use an upgrade to its aesthetics. read more

Food was not what I was expecting. We love Chinese food and I was craving Chow Mein really bad. What came was not what I ordered. My dish was soup with no noodles in it at all. My Mongolian Beef was flavorless, egg rolls were cold, flavorless, and seemed frozen and defrosted... sweet and sour chicken was the best thing that came out, nice and juicy chicken but the sauce wasn't what I was used to. We're new to east Tennessee and came from an area with a wide variety of authentic ethnic food. So we've been searching out good Chinese food that isnt too far a drive. We decided to take the 50 mile drive to Hixon to try Formosa. Its a small but cozy Chinese restaurant in a shopping center off of Hixon Pike. We we're pleased to be seated in a comfy albeit well worn booth. Our waiter was very pleasant and attentive. We ordered egg role to start. The wraps were a bit thick and chewy but the stuffing was fresh and flavorful. So far so good. Next we ordered moo shoo chicken (traditional Chinese dish that is like a burrito with a flour wrap stuffed with veggie and shredded chicken or pork finished with plum sauce). Very good and reminiscent of what we have been getting for years in old school Chinese restaurants. We also got imperial chicken and a sweet and sour type fried shrimp and veggie fried rice. The chicken and shrimp dishes were very good but maybe a bit bland. We've reconciled ourselves to the reality that Tennesseans just dont go for spicy foods. Too bad. The fried rice was tasty but lacked crunchy veggies like peas and carrots. Again, a bit dissapointing. My daughter told me we wouldn't like it but tried it anyway. She was wrong. It's a solid Chinese restaurant. Atmosphere is calm, dark, decor a bit austere. We did carry out at 4:30 and carry out bags were lined up. We were one of 6. The young man said they do carry outs mostly but restaurant fills at 6:30 pm and after. We are vegetarians. We had vegetable egg foo young and sweet and sour mushrooms. Egg foo young very tasty with ample sauce. Egg drop soup tasty. Little crunchy noodles fun to eat. Sweet and sour mushrooms very tasty and so was the sauce. Vegetarian egg rolls were just cabbage. She'll pretty tough. Like spring rolls better and filling need to be improved. That was a minor. Well Grubhub did end up refunding my money so i wanted to give Formosa another shot. I placed another order on Grubhub for pickup yesterday and the experience was absolutely surreal. I requested no peppers on one of the items but got peppers on it anyway. I called the restaurant and the lady said they are happy to replace it, so i returned. Upon my arrival, the person in the picture came storming to the cash register in full hostile combat mode and started arguing with me immediately. He yelled we never put peppers on this dish and i must be wrong. Then his profanity started. He argued with me about my previous review and proclaimed it was all Grubhub's fault and that I was wrong again. He threatened me and said he was going to F... me up. I've never had an exchange like this before so i took out my phone to start recording. Thats when he actually violently grabbed my phone from right out of my hand and continued yelling profanities. That part was recorded. Before the lady at the cash register convinced him to return my phone, I was certain he was going to try beating me up. Astonishingly, i actually did receive the replacement dish and left. He was yelling profanities as I walked out. Sadly, I still have to report that they're are not very many good Chinese places in Chattanooga. Everyone wants the all-you-can-eat buffets, which are frankly, not great. At least Formosa makes everything to order. They have a huge menu, which gives you a lot of options. They have some dishes that are pretty tasty. Their Egg Foo Young is really good and HUGE. You could feed a family of 6 with one order. This is a meal, not those tiny pieces you generally get. This is the star. Thick and full of egg and veggies and meat. They are so big that they don't get really crispy. Though if the choice is a big meaty patty versus a small, thin, crispy patty, I'll take the the big one. Ha! One of my new discoveries is the Shan-Shin soup. Rich and beafy broth, lots of veggies and meat. Perfect if you're doing low carb, as there are no noodles in it. I'm totally digging this soup.It's making me hungry just thinking about it. So really the Egg Foo Young and the Shan-Shin soup can make a fantastic low-carb meal when you're craving some Chinese but trying to be good. read more

The best Chinese I've found in the area. Love the crunchy fried noodles they give you when you first sit down. The Hot and Sour Soup is fantastic. Now I can't remember what I had today but I think it was Colonel Chicken maybe (no, not General Tso), with tofu subbed for the chicken. It was great. I have been eating at Formosa for over 30 years. By far my favorite restaurant in the city and there isn't another Chinese restaurant quite like it! Today on the other hand felt like a bad X-files episode. I ordered my favorite dish, Governor's Chicken, and it was the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten! Since this was a carry out I had to go back to get a new order (which they kindly replaced). After returning home and giving the second batch a try...it too got emptied into my disposal! Formosa has been one of the most consistent restaurants over the years but this does not bode well for its future. I will have a hard time going back with the same confidence that Mitchell and Mike built over the last 3 decades. It was my first time trying this place and I really didn't know what to expect. When I walked in I saw that the restaurant was fairly busy with the after church crowd on Sunday and figured that could be a good sign. Immediately after I was seated I was brought fried wonton chips and sweet and sour sauce. I only saw one or two vegetarian items on the lunch menu so I asked my server for suggestions. My server was very helpful and attentive. She told me there were more options on the regular menu so I decided to take a look there. I ordered the vegetable egg roll and the spiced Japanese eggplant in garlic sauce (which came with your choice of rice). The vegetable egg roll was interesting. It was good but the shape was off. It was the length of a spring roll but was as wide as a burrito from Taco Bell. Nevertheless, looks aside it was good. The fried rice was simple. It just had egg and some seasonings. It was good but wasn't amazing. The eggplant was by far the best thing I had. It was cooked perfectly and the garlic sauce was AMAZING!!! Overall it was good. On a hunt for some soup dumplings, my husband and I stopped in here on new years eve. We ordered their eggrolls and steamed mini buns(soup dumplings). Eggrolls came out pretty quick and were very good. A little bit later, the dumplings came out. They were fantastic and the house made dumpling sauce was perfect. After we ordered, we probably sat there nearly 45 minutes waiting for our food. I understand they were kind of busy but we didn't order anything I felt would take that long. I ordered the beef with 5 flavor sauce and fried rice. It was delicious! Spicy but not overtaking. My husband ordered sweet and sour chicken. That unfortunately tasted overcooked. We have eaten here three times. The first and second time I hated it and the third time I loved it. I'll average it out at three stars, for now. First of all I'll say that our server was great this time and really tried helping me find something I'd like. I find most of their sauces to be extremely sweet. Much too sweet for my taste. I tried the dragon chicken dish and the governors chicken, neither of which I enjoyed. Much, much too sweet. The dish I tried and loved was the beef with mandarin vegetables. It was in a savory brown sauce that I really enjoyed. The veggies were fresh and the beef was plentiful and of good quality. I also love the crunchy wonton appatizer they bring the table. But I will note that I don't like their fried rice so I ordered steamed. Their fried rice is very greasy. Our family is visiting in TN and we came across this restaurant looking at yelp. Omg what an amazing dinner we had! The family dinner for four was well worth the price and we have leftovers to take home. The server rolled the moo Shu pork in the pancake at our table and fried the pork stir fry dish at our table as well. The hot and sour soup was the best I have ever had at a Szechuan/Chinese restaurant. The service was excellent and everything about the dining experience was top notch! The Dining Divas went to lunch at Formosa in Hixson on Wednesday March 4th. There were 16 of us and we were seated immediately. The atmosphere is very pleasant with Chinese deco. Our server, Hannah, was amazing! She was able to supply everything we needed without hovering over us. She is a great asset to the restaurant. We had to wait for a while to our orders but we were served all at the same time. Some enjoyed their lunch without any complaints but some were not so happy. One Diva got the wrong order and another who has a seafood allergy, had a shrimp on her plate. Both meals were replaced without question. Some Divas didn't like the food as they thought it was not good quality. We rated the Formosa a 3.5 out of 5. read more
