Located in the heart of Kailua town, which has seen its expansion of shop and especially restaurants over recent years, Formaggio Grill adds itself as a more upscale establishment. Lunch date with the family. Being our first time eating at Formaggio Grill we were all looking forward to digging into the food. We stopped in for lunch and were all decently satisfied with our choices of dish. We started off with the Bruschetta, which was pretty good. For my entree, I ordered the Kobe Burger with Sweet Potato fries. For fries, you do have the choice of regular, sweet potato, or truffle. My burger was well-done. Even so, the burger was juicy and tasty, as they use wagyu beef, which is one of the better selections of meat coming from Japan. The burger was big, and the fries plentiful. I do recommend this if you enjoy burgers. Also went with a White Wine Sangria as a libation. Reservations were made for lunch but may not be necessary as there were only a few tables filled. Though it was empty it did take a while for an employee to take our drink and food orders. Nonetheless, those who did wait on us were friendly. So delicious ribeye can be cut by a butter knife! Brought my Dallas born and raised husband here and he ordered the ribeye medium well. I was nervous because he is very particular about his beef. He was so pleased with the meal that he was able to cut his steak with the butter knife they provided him. The fish tacos were light and filling and the half and half fries (sweet potato and truffle fries) were on point! The atmosphere was intimate and romantic. I don't know about you, but when a restaurant isn't busy, service and/or good tends to be terrible because the staff finds too much time on their hands, slacking off and I usually see them talking story or on their personal phones. I just went here last night, 4th of July, with my husband and mother in law. I was, again, impressed with service and great good. I opted for a $19.95 3 course meal that was very generous in portions and delicious. I chose caeser salad and salmon picatta. The salmon was perfectly cooked with a crispy top and moist, tender inside. The presentation was beautiful as well. I wish there was more yummy picatta sauce, but it was still very good! I came here with a group of 20 on December 15th for a celebration. We all had a 3 course dinner. I had Just a Nice House Salad and 8oz Kiawe Smoked Prime Rib. I came late and missed the appetizers. I also had a cappuccino Here's a quick breakdown of the pros and cons Pro: 1) Able to accommodate the group in separate room, plenty of space, separate restroom 2) Lighting was moderately dim with accents on the wall decorations. 3) Servers were nice and prompt 4) I think the owner came to see us, and made a joke that he was single and sat on one of the lady's laps, who was also single Con: 1) Did not have the red wine I ordered, instead offered a more expensive Cabernet. 2) Did not have gelatto for dessert for the group 3) The Prime Rib was good but had lots of seasoning (thyme) The experience might be completely different in a smaller group or with just another guest. I have been craving a restaurant quality filet mignon for almost a year. Imagine my delight when I saw a post on Nextdoor raving about this place. I haven't been here in years but was excited to see filet mignon on the menu! Yessss! So I was counting the minutes until they opened today so I could get my filet! Sadly sometimes when you build the anticipation in your head, the reality will disappoint. This was the case today. My filet was tiny and not seasoned well at all. And I did ask how big it was when I called just so I had an idea of what to expect. The guy was super nice on the phone, as was the person who responded to my inquiry on FB. But to charge $45 for a tiny piece of meat, it should have been the best few ounces of meat I've had in a year (my bar is even super low). And my fries were plentiful, but soggy and soaked with oil. Four stars for excellent food, calming atmosphere and the owner being so kind! Stumbling along this place in Kailua town I didn't expect such deliciousness and superb entrees! It seemed like a wine and cheese bar from the outside. The dark setting next to Fat Boys and across from Starbucks really makes it stand apart. They had a great Sauvignon Blanc. The prices weren't too bad too. For the food we ordered, I thought the bill was going to be way more. I was extremely happy with everything we ate and I am definitely going to sleep well tonight because of everything I'm digesting. Soooo ono! Minus one star for Ashley the waitress. Could have had better service. I've never shown my ID before at a restaurant being that I'm very mature looking. She asked for my identification (I fully understand the policy, especially with the owner being there), but I felt disrespected with her tone in the moment. When you arrive, make sure you have your proper identification because this isn't a casual family joint. Even if you're 60+, they'll ask for ID. Could have been handled better. We decided to go out with friends to a restaurant out of our usual area. They suggested Formaggio. I had eaten there many years ago so I quickly agreed. This was not the Formaggio I remembered. The lighting is very dim in the dining area. The live music was good but was too loud to hold a conversation. The waiter was adequate. Blue cheese stuffed olives and pickled onions were advertised on the drink menu for their martinis. I was told "we don't have the stuffed olives because of COVID. We can't stuff the olives because we'd have to touch them". Say what? I'm at a restaurant where food and drink are being served, I assume they are touching things. Maybe some food service gloves? The food was adequate as well. Not one person in the group said a thing about how good their food tasted nor did they say it was bad. Forty nine dollars for a Ribeye steak that did not elicit one appreciative sound. Overall it was nice to be out enjoying a meal with friends but I would not recommend this restaurant nor plan to go back. read more

This was by far the most abysmal service I have ever received at a restaurant. Our server ONLY took our order and brought our check, leaving the other servers to pick up her slack between all of their other tables. Another server even commented when she came to see if we wanted refills (our glasses had been empty for upwards of ten minutes) "I just couldn't walk by you guys anymore." Our own server had better things to do than pay attention to our table, and we repeatedly had to flag down any server we saw for refills. She didn't come back to check on our table at all, not even once. After we sat in front of our empty plates for fifteen minutes, another server came to clear them. 22 minutes later (again, with empty glasses in front of us), our server came back and dropped the bill on the table like a hot rock. I wouldn't have minded slow service, but this sunk to the level of almost no service. Very disappointing, we won't be returning. read more

We did the Dining in the Dark here. They do it once a month - the first Monday of the month and I would recommend you make reservations for the dining in the dark (it may even be required!) Anyways - when we arrived for the Dining in the Dark they took us into a separate seating area, where all those who would be dark dining were going to be eating. At our table we had blindfolds (which you get to take home). To begin they told us to put our blindfolds on and that everything on our plate would be edible! Good to know! If we needed to leave the room for the restroom during dining, to raise our hand and they would escort us out - since you can't peak! The atmosphere of the dining in the dark was perfect - it was safe, laid back, fun, and everyone around was having an awesome time. The wait staff is super friendly, and joked around with us while we attempted our meals blindfolded - they did an excellent job making it even more fun! As for the food - amazing! They offered wine pairing with the meal also, and their selections were superb! The meal ended up being a five course meal with five different wines. They don't tell you what your eating until you are done with all the courses, and then they show you what your meal looked like and what ingredients were in it. I will say I didn't guess correctly too often! My husband on the other had did better with this guessing game. I wouldn't recommend it as a first date kind of thing, or if you are trying to get to know someone. Go with people you already know and trust, because at first it is odd talking to someone when you can't see them and they can't see you. And your likely to do something stupid.... Like knock your utensils to the floor, spill something, miss your mouth, etc. The dining in the dark is a bit pricey - especially if everyone does the wine pairing. However, it is worth it. It is quite an experience. If you are visiting Oahu - add this on to your list of things to do. If you live here, make sure you make it to Formaggio Grill to try it out. It is well worth it! All in all: So worth the money, fun, interesting, and just go do it - you won't regret it! read more

Man I'm really torn on how many stars to give Formaggio. I can't think of another time that I've had a dining experience so bad and so good at the same time. If it were purely based on the quality of the food and the wine, then it would have easily been a 5 star meal (and I don't give out 5-stars very often). We checked in with the hostess about 6:45 and were told 30 minutes for a table for 3. Okay, no problem. We'll have a drink and wait. There was a waiter who was taking and delivering drink orders from people waiting outside the restaurant. We tried to place an order with him, but he held up his finger and said he would "be right back" and was clearly in a hurry to get someplace. We didn't see him again for quite a while after that, and we had to actively get his attention and pull him over to take our order and bring us a drink. Annoying. After about 45 minutes, I started telling my two buddies that we should just walk across the street to Maui Tacos or Teddy's Bigger Burger, but they wanted to wait for our table at Formaggio. It really pissed me off when they seated one party of 2 and then another party of 2, all of whom arrived and checked in AFTER we did. Why couldn't they take those two tables for 2 and push them together for a party of 3? It took an HOUR and FIFTEEN minutes to get seated. I'm sorry, but NO meal is worth that long a wait (just to sit down at a table mind you - not even talking about food yet). I was so hungry, I was about ready to gnaw my arm off. By the way, did I mention that I wanted to get something QUICK for dinner at 5 p.m. over around Pearl Harbor but my friends insisted on going to Formaggio over in Kailua? It's now 8:15 p.m. and we're just getting seated. We placed our order all at once - appetizers and entrees. It took about 15 minutes for the appetizers to come out, so that saved my arm. It. Took. ONE. FREAKING. HOUR. for our entrees to come out. I kid you not. AAAAAND, they brought my entree and one of my friend's entrees, but not the third. We still don't know what happened. You'd think after it took them an HOUR to cook two of our meals that they could have cooked the third while they were at it. OH, and get this - the missing meal was seared RARE ahi tuna, so it's not like it needed COOKING. The food and wine were absolutely superb... but then again, I was so hungry by the time the food came, I would have eaten a dead rat if they had put it on a plate in front of me. So my judgment of the food quality is probably biased by how hungry I was. The waiting time for the food and the premium price you pay for it just simply aren't worth it. To their credit, the manager did come and apologize to us and provided us a free dessert to compensate us for whatever went wrong in the kitchen with our dinner orders. It pains me to write this review. This use to be my favorite restaurant. The last three times I've been here the service has been mediocre and the food has been sub-par. Tonight I spent close to $100 on two glasses of wine, a cheese plate that completely lacked imagination, a tub of humus that was bland and Gnocchi that was more onion than pasta. ... the wine was good (but overpriced) The cheese had so much wasabi in it that it was inedible. Whomever is selecting the cheeses must have their taste buds examined. The slabs of meat served with this were unappetizing. Soooooo disappointing. The humus was bland and tasteless. The gnocchi had so much onion in it that it was difficult to taste anything else. The food was basically plopped down in front of us by the food runner. The owner came by, saw that we were asking for our check, asked if everything was ok. Clearly its not if we're asking for the check and 90% of the food is left on all three plates. I love the atmosphere and the wine selection is usually pretty good (but pricey)... but the only consistency to the food is that its quality is constantly going in the same direction ... down. I have heard wonderful things about this restaurant and I was waiting for the right time to go....enter dining in the dark. I had read about this event on yelp talk for "ideas for date night" and I was eager to sign up. According to the website, they only take reservations a couple days before so just to confirm this, I called a month prior. I spoke to a hostess who seem more eager to get off the phone with me than answer my questions. She took down my name and number and said she would have her supervisor call me to tell me more about the event details. ....I did not hear from them at all. 3 days before the event I call the restaurant and the hostess I spoke to had NO idea what dining in the dark was and seemed to rhetorically ask me "Do we even do that event anymore?" and I responded "its on your website...." and so she puts me on hold, comes back, takes my info and says that she will have her supervisor call me before the end of the night. ...again, did not hear from them at all. Called on the day of the event to see if there were any spots open and yet again, a different hostess, who had no idea about the event that evening. While all the hostesses were cordial I was surprised that non were informed about this event. I was also very surprised that I was never contacted by anyone at the restaurant to give me more info so we could attend this event. I really wanted to be a happy customer that loved this place but, its going to take me a while to get over this. They have lost a customer(s) for a couple months. I am going to give them a try in the far future, only because I trust the reviews from my fellow yelpers. Lets hope their customer service is better in person than over the phone. read more

We've been to Formaggios probably about 6-7 times and each time it goes downhill sadly :( The ownership seems like its changed several times and this current one is noticeably different. There is really no happy hour menu anymore, the food prices went up and the quality went down. And it is not family friendly at all! There are no high chairs or booster seats! Eek, methinks not! (The wait staff was VERY nice, and they asked often if the food was good, etc. Around the 3rd time they asked, I said "You were great but the food wasn't very good." Well this place has some dishes for around $40., and their food is completely uninspired. Methinks they should "step up their game". We didn't order big ticket items. I ordered fish tacos, and C. ordered pasta with meatballs. It just seems like they don't care. after I complained, the manager or owner guy who was there... did not come by to apologize or anything. My fish tacos, when they set it down-- I could smell the rank smell of un-fresh fish. i didn't even really care if it was from frozen... it was just old. Nasty. The cajun spice could not cover up the nastiness. C.'s pasta was hot, but the meatballs were cold. And then, in the Men's bathroom... it was dirty, grungy. No soap in the dispenser. Door was grubby with what looked like years of grunge just building up. There were stacks of tiles being stored under the sink, and in the hallway kitchen stuff was piled up. I don't like writing negative reviews but, Formaggio was simply a dud. For the sake of future patrons, I'd like to assume that their kitchen was having an off night. Maybe they were short staffed and had to hire temporary line cooks - presumably on furlough from a prison kitchen. Here's the breakdown of what we tried: Drinks: wine and bourbon. Good. Escargot Bleu: bland. They are either using a low quality bleu cheese or none at all. It was imperceptible. The bread was good. Mussels Arrabiata: underwhelming. Mussels overcooked. Pasta overcooked. Sauce tasted ok. It gave me the impression that the cooks do not know, or do not care, how to prepare this dish. Gnocchi Primavera: wtf! This was just bad. The only good thing I can say is that it was surprisingly small - not too much of that garbage to choke down. If a 13 year old made that in home ec, they would probably receive detention for being a sarcastic asshole. Service: decent. Our waitress was attentive and nice but, lacked knowledge of the menu. I asked her "If you were eating here what would you have?" Her reply was "I don't know, I haven't tried very many things. The Beef Bourguignon is pretty good." What? The servers haven't tasted everything on the menu? Maybe she has some kind of allergy. Maybe she, like me, just has a low tolerance for shitty food. In the end, she could tell that I was unhappy and offered to reduce the bill. With as much courtesy as I could muster, I said "No. Please just give me the bill so we can get out of here." Overall, I found Formaggio lackluster. If I wanted crappy food from a Sysco truck, I'd go to Olive Garden. If I wasn't trying to have a nice dinner with my girlie, I would not have been so polite. Bad news travels faster than good news, with that being said I hope people read my review. I came here last night on a date, having never been here before I read the reviews and came here with an open mind anyway (as should other customers). When we first entered the restaurant we were greeted by a friendly smile by Daniel, who also turned out to be our server. Daniel did everything a server was supposed to do. He told us the specials, refilled water (without us asking), and did everything with a smile. He was also assisted by Dave, I asked both servers what their favorites were and I went with Dave's favorite, Steak Neptune. Steak Neptune: Filet mignon with crabmeat. It was AMAZING! I ordered steak to be cooked medium and it was, crabmeat was flavorful. I'm not sure what also to say, besides the fact that I loved this dish. My date cleared off his entire plate also, he ordered a steak and had NO complaints. As far as atmosphere goes. It is a little dark, so I guess it is a good date/romantic setting place. We went to eat at 5:00 on a Saturday. We walked in and were excited to see many empty tables thinking that we would get in before the rush. But wait, all the empty tables were reserved and we would have to wait 15 to 30 minutes for a table. The hostess seemed clueless when asking her questions about different aspects of the restaurant. We sat at the bar and ordered a pupu. Two other couples came in and were sat immediately without a reservation, so we went and asked again. The hostess then said she had a table open and sat us. The food was overpriced and not very good. I had the short ribs- drowned in sauce and a cut of ribs that was highly fatty. My husband had a seafood pasta. Dining in the Dark: My husband and I have "surprise" date nights once a month where we take turns picking a mystery location for dinner. I chose Dining in the Dark, a once a month Fromaggio event as my surprise for him. What I liked: - You get blind folded before you enter the dining in the dark room. The blind fold is heavy duty and you seriously can't see a thing. A kind waitress lead us to our table. That was fun. -You get to keep the blind fold. - Gourmet dinner. There's no messing around with the food. It's fine dining and the price of $55 per person for food is really a good deal for what you get. - Wine pairings. I'm nursing so I couldn't drink, but my husband enjoyed his 5 glasses of wine for $25. I had lilikoi juice insead and that was delish. - Great service. The wait staff was great. What can be improved: - There was A LOT of wait time involved in between courses. Like seriously, we had to wait 25 min before each course was served. Maybe we eat too fast or something. The dinner started at 7 pm and we finished at 10pm. That's a long time. I did not expect it to take that long. I kept worrying about my mom who was watching our baby. - Too much food. I expected 3 appetizers, 1 main course, and 1 dessert. However, we got 1 amuse bouche (tofu arrabiata), 3 entrees (chicken cordon bleu type dish, lobster rissoto, filet minion), and a dessert (chocolate cinamon souffle). That was too much food! I could not finish... But all in all it was a great experience and I'm glad that there is a restaurant that hosts these kinds of fun events. This place doesn't live up to its pretensions. Disappointed with the pizza. Ordered a puttanesca----this is supposed to be a spicy, bold sauce with plenty of crushed red pepper and anchovies, but the one I was served was bland: no pepper, no anchovies, fewer than one tiny bit of watery olive per slice, one or two capers on the whole pie. The good: Pizza crust was thin and crispy. Happy hour wine (pinot grigio) was tasty and reasonably priced at $5.25. Service: Inattentive. read more
