We made an impulse visit to the Fork & Hen for dinner. We were able to get in without a reservation and opted to sit inside, they also have outdoor seating. Interesting décor of stuff. I was seated facing a wall so I didn't get a good long look at my surroundings but between what I did see and looking at photos posted on Yelp the theme seems to be chickens. Our server was friendly and available to answer any questions as we spent time looking over the menu. I settled on The Hitman, a double patty smashed burger with American cheese, hen sauce, fried mozzarella, Nueske's bacon, with a side of garlic parm fries. It isn't listed on the online menu but there is a note the menu changes frequently so it may not match the day's offering. Let me start by saying that two of the people at my table got salads and were disappointed that there was too much lettuce and too little other stuff. With that out of the way, let me talk about The Hitman, which I loved. What is Nueske bacon? This is a special smoked flavorful bacon made by the Nueske family. Fork & Hen uses thick cut, and there were two slices on my burger. My burger towered so high there was no hope of picking it up, so I attacked it with knife and fork. Being made with Focaccia bread certainly added to the height, but so did a thick block of mozzzrella cheese. The cheese, melted on the inside and crispy on the outside, was substantial. I would be careful biting into a hot block of melted cheese, think pizza mouth. In my photo I broke into one corner to show that is cheese, so much cheese. The burger patty part topped with American cheese was by itself great, like you might find at a home cookout or Smashburgers. Other toppings were there but for me this was meat and a lot of cheese. A disappointing experience. Walked in around 7pm and the restaurant was completely empty. That should have been our first indication. Our table ordered a couple of dishes: chicken and waffles, southern fried chicken, shrimp fried rice, and the hitman. The water tasted like it came straight from the water fountain outside the restaurant. Chicken was overly breaded and salty, and the corn cake was sour. I also don't know how they managed to dry out dark meat. The waffle was semi burnt. The shrimp "fried rice" was soggy, vinegary, almost sushi rice like texture, and shrimp was heavily salted. The hitman smashed burger... the hitman probably killed people with the insane amount of salt on the plate. See the theme? Spending a couple of days in Sarasota, FL and tried Fork and Hen for the first time. Their site had me at "soul food with a modern twist." The "Best Damn Mac and Cheese" is not false advertisement. Wow. Huge portion and worth every $13 penny. Elevated with Gruyère, donegal cheddar and reggiano cheese with a light béchamel and is so very good. I foresee myself craving this in the future and being sad I live in Orlando and can't even Door Dash. I really enjoyed the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict too - though some of my crab had a little fishy taste, but most of it was perfect. The Meyer-lemon hollandaise was creamy, light and just enough citrus flavor. Love it being served on soft foccacia bread with perfectly poached eggs. Service was fantastic! Our server "Erica" was amazing. She made great recommendations and even made a fresh pot of coffee for me, Including an iced version of it to go along with my husband's iced tea. This was a pleasant surprise because we were on a tight schedule and just wanted a quick bite. I think it was meant to feel eclectic, but it came across as a little sloppy and not entirely cohesive. Before going, we had looked at reviews and saw photos of some really beautiful dishes. Unfortunately, when we tried to find those same items on the menu, they weren't there anymore. That left us feeling a little indecisive. Our server was friendly and patient and gave us plenty of time to decide, which we appreciated. We eventually ordered the six-wing special and a burger to share. Then we waited... and waited. It ended up being over 45 minutes for our food, which was pretty frustrating considering there were only a few people in the restaurant. For wings and a burger, that just felt like a really long time. Eventually I asked the server to check on it. The wings came out shortly after, but the burger still wasn't ready. The wings were amazing. Seriously delicious! Crispy, flavorful, and absolutely the highlight of the meal. The burger, unfortunately, was just okay. It was a little under-seasoned, and the four slices of cheese completely overwhelmed it. We expected the cheese to be melted (especially on a smashburger), but as you can see in the photos, the cheese was actually still cold. It was also served on focaccia bread. The bread had great flavor and texture on its own, but it didn't hold up well to a juicy burger. The bottom piece was already soaked through before we even took the first bite. Some people might like that, but it wasn't really our thing. At the end of the meal, the chef sent out one of his homemade cookies, which was a really nice gesture. It was a giant, freshly baked chocolate chip cookie with white chocolate chunks and Cadbury eggs and it was absolutely fantastic. Overall, the food was a bit of a mixed bag. Sadly right after this meal, we stopped for gelato on Main Street, could not find handicapped or near parking spot for my handicapped placard car for wife's knee/bone on bone and car accident recovering conditions and currently she is treating a shingles outbreak with EYE involvement!! We got towed in under 10 minutes for over $300 and ruined our evening at Main and Orange down the street) To the review: We had been here a few times as Made so this was a new experience. Service was pretty sluggish, but we were not in a hurry. Server was communicative, pleasant and suggestive. When we were needing or waiting for beverages or ordering or a missing item we were "alone" or the two or three waitstaff was tending to other tables. I normally do not give bad reviews because I prefer to tell the manager/owner any issues so they can deal with them directly. In this case, they did not give me that chance. They just opened this restaurant in this new space and unfortunately the wait for food was horrible, and when it finally arrived, the food was cold. Our server literally told us three times that our food was on the way. The fourth time he said the manager was coming to talk to us about why we hadn't received any food yet. Ten minutes later I told the server to just bring our check and after he disappeared the manager finally came out with our food. He dropped the plates on our table and left without saying anything. Some sort of acknowledgement of the screw up would have been nice but he had no interest in that. He turned and ran. Of course the food was stone cold and no one showed up at any time to ask about it. We wouldn't have asked for it to be reheated anyway because we knew that would have taken another hour or two. Sigh... I understand the problems involved in opening a restaurant in a new space but I also understand the power of a simple apology. Tonight they failed biggly. On a positive note, the two guys in the bar were super nice, when they came around. And the drop biscuits crab rangoon is a destination item, as long as you get them hot. The fried rice was tasty and the egg on top was very well cooked. The shrimp were well seasoned but not very good because they were cold. I might give this place another chance because of the biscuits but I'll wait at least two months to let them get up to speed. First time at this establishment. The place is "upper casual" in downtown Sarasota. Is a little pricy, but worth the cost for a nice treat. We had reservations and although we were a little late we got seated promptly. The service was welcoming and prompt. The food was great. Started with the ceviche, it delicious. It looked elegant and the fish was just right and the leche de Tigre with some type of green aioli (not sure what it was) was right on. My wife had the chicken and it was fried to perfection and it was still juicy. I'm not collard greens person but I enjoyed them. I had the braised short rib over grits and wow the tenderness was incredible. It definitely lives up to its name "24-hour braised". The place is small when you walk in (they're moving to a larger building in a few weeks) and there's a small bar, a few indoor tables, and a few outdoor tables. The server (Megan) is the girlfriend of the owner and they're both New Yorkers (I think). We chose to split some meals so we could try more. The Karaage Fried Chicken Mama's Fried Rice was full of flavors, and so delicious. The Hitman burger was excellent: salty, cheesy, and had a bit of a kick in the sauce. The Brooklyn Milanese Fried Chicken Sandwich - pesto and mozzarella on top? With homemade bread??? Yummmmm. The garlic Parmesan fries are thicker potato wedges that have the perfect crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. All in all, great place. We commented that we felt pregnant after leaving because of our overly full bellies. The funny thing was, all the moans from each tasty bite, you might think one was getting pregnant.
