Just be prepared to have your heart broken! I am a loving and very responsible pet owner. I went to their open house this past Saturday and fell in love with a cat. I went online and filled out an adoption application. Two days later I was turned down for adoption. When I inquired why I was turned down I was told that they "can't discuss specifics per policy". The unbelievable thing is that they NEVER CALLED my reference. I am heartbroken I fell in love with a cat and am being denied adoption because they apparently base their decisions on whether or not they like you. If you want to adopt I would either suggest filling out an application before you go meet the animals or adopt from a kill shelter. I had gotten my cat here back when things were better and I'm really saddened by the way this shelter has been functioning lately. I personally have seen both sides having volunteered at the shelter a couple years ago and loved it and did not understand the extent to which adopting was such an issue. My brother and his fiancée recently tried to adopt a cat and were also denied. Seems like from other reviews and from some people I know who foster cats that this is very common. When volunteering I felt like the issue was that not enough people wanted to adopt the cats but now I feel like that's not true. I understand having concerns, I'd seen in my time people return cats and so I understand wanting to try to ensure that more responsible people will be adopting but it has gone too far. Its such a shame that there are so many people willing to adopt cats and give them a good home and yet the shelter is being incredibly restrictive. I do not understand. Do they not want the cats to be adopted?? I've seen cats be there for years and it seems like the shelter isn't doing anything to improve that. I recently adopted a wonderful cat from Forgotten Felines. The staff was excellent & I had a positive experience, Yes you have to go through an adoption process but they are making sure you will be a responsible cat owner. read more

Adapted a cat that ran of. Turns out that it was a feral cat that had ran off twice before. Spend a few days searching using havaheart traps and trail cams. Finally noticed them. Tried for several weeks with no luck. Went back and was basically told to never come back since we waited several days to notify them. These folks might be good with cats but their people skills suck. They probably should have shared the cats history prior to adaption. Felt with another agency and have had much better luck. Yes they are a NO KILL shelter run by volunteers and I think they have the best interests of the cats at heart, but the people in charge have some serious priority issues. For one the adoption process is VERY strict. When I adopted from them it took 2 months for my application to be accepted, punctuated by condescending emails from their staff. I've seen them turn families away for having younger children (regardless of disposition) and refuse to adopt out younger cats to older folks. They want to find the perfect home for all their animals but in the meantime cats are spending the majority of their lives in crowded little rooms. Adoptees must sign a form promising that they will never let their cats outdoors and that if they ever decide they can no longer care for the cat it must go back to forgotten felines. (that's right, no re-homing allowed) The other issue is their policy on feral cats. At some point they decided instead of a catch, neuter/spay, and release program they would keep the ferals in the shelter to protect them from the coyote problem in this area. The issue with this is those adult feral cats will never be adoptable, they spend their lives hiding from the volunteers and visitors. These animals do not want anything to do with humans and act as a drain on the resources of the shelter in addition to being miserable. Even if someone did want to adopt a feral as a barn mouser, you can forget about it, indoor only remember? From what I've seen at least half of the cats in the shelter fall into this category. Forgotten felines is so overrun with these ferals that they cannot take owner surrenders, cats that could actually go to new homes. The only time they do take such cats is when desperate owners literally leave boxed cats on their doorstep. If you are trying to adopt they do have some great cats in their care that really do deserve loving homes. That said be prepared for a fight before they let any of their wards out of sight. read more

This review should be in two parts. First part is for the shelter itself. When we visited it was clean, well staffed and the cats all seemed happy, well feed and cared for. The second part of the review is for the adoption process. We saw the shelter online and filled out the app on a Wednesday. That Saturday there was an open house at the shelter. We decided to go and see the cat we wanted and were planning on taking her home. After viewing the cat we were told that our application had not been processed and the person who does thst wasn't in. We were told we should get a call soon. After waiting until the following Thursday and still no call we called them. On friday we got a call back saying we were denied. .no reason given. We are a married couple in our 50s with our own home, we have no other pets and our children are grown and live on their own. We have had cats in the past. We both work and are professional. To say we were disappointed is putting it mildly. The next day, Saturday, we went to the waterford humane society. We walked in, found a cat, did our paperwork and went home with her to her nice,forever home. I feel bad for all the cats waiting for homes at this place. read more

I was very disappointed in the application process... Full disclosure I recently suffered a miscarriage and my stepdaughter was having a hard time copping so we promised we would get her a cat/kitten this year. Unfortunately our application was denied... We live is a modest home have plenty of income, time, LOVE and space for a cat or 2... Very disappointed I feel this place does not have the cats best interest in mind. Very disappointed for my stepdaughter and cats at the shelter! We will be adopting from another organization. My experience with them was a nightmare. My cat that I had since I was 3 recently passed away at the age of 20. My other, cat whom I rescued several years ago was very attached to her, and I am worried that she would get lonely playing by herself while I am away at work, so I decided to get her a friend. I heard a lot about Forgotten Felines and was ecstatic of the thought to possibly give one of their cats a home. However my excitement turned into frustration when I never heard from the owner in over a week. Constantly calling once a day and messaging them on Facebook there was never an answer. However I finally received a call and I was filled with joy! The lady seemed very nice and asked a lot of questions to find the right companion for my cat. Unfortunately my excitement yet again turned to frustration when she asked me where I lived. Apparently Wallingford was a bit "too far" from them, and my future move to Norwich would be "too traumatizing". I would of been fine with that, I can understand that it could possibly stress out the cat, but I draw the line of insulting me and my boyfriend. She claimed that I would lose my cat in the process of moving or not pay attention to my cat when i to move in with my boyfriend. That infuriated me, she knows nothing about me OR my boyfriend, and apparently thinks we're so incompetent that we would lose the cats in the process of moving! My advice is to go find a different shelter if you truly wish to rescue an animal. The cats there roam around freely and are taken care of really well, but the process of just trying to adopt one is a nightmare. read more
