What an incredible experience this morning at Lyon Arboretum! Forest bathing "shinren yoku" with only certified guide in Hawaii. Three hour meditative walk in the rain forest - with rain and sunshine. TIP bring a rain jacket and mosquito repellent.

A unique experience. Hearing from Phyllis and getting to take a different perspective on seeing/ connecting with nature was such a joy. Truly recommended. Got to practice great ways of being present. It was a short and easy walk in such a beautiful environment. In COVID times, stayed safe with masking and even with others in the group you are outside predominantly. Be sure to use the restroom before going on the walk. Should last about 2 hours but we'll worth the time and cost! Highly recommended! Big tip: bring mosquito repellant, wear long sleeved items and prepare for a little rain.

Phyllis is an amazing guide and this is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. I am local and have visited Lyon Arboretum several times and yet forest bathing allowed me to truly see and appreciate nature as if seeing it for the first time with child-like awe and curiosity. The act of slowing down and appreciating the environment and other human beings is definitely what is needed in our world. Thank you for everything, Phyllis!

The name of the temple means "Broken Ridge Temple.". What appears to be a flaw in the construction the roof was lowered because it exceeded the height limitation of the City & County. The temple is magnificent despite the roof's lower height. The grounds are beautiful and abundant with plants especially the variety of mango trees and coconut trees throughout the property. There are statues such as the Statue of Miruk Boddhisatava. There are lotus buds and lovely lotus flowers in bloom and pots of water lilies too. Water is saved in plastic containers and drums. The most interesting sight is the pots of aged miso and shoyu on the roof top below the temple. Highly recommmend a visit to capture the tranquility and beauty of the temple and Palolo Valley.

Set in the lush land of Hauula, the temple is a bit inland from the main road. And most of the residential areas are in small trailer guys behind groves of papaya trees. This particular day we came for the inauguration and watched traditional Cambodian dances. It may seem insignificant to say this - but this day was a deep soul filling commemorative of a people who were almost wiped of their culture by their own governments hands. All the dancers were survived the wrath of Pol Pot's regime. It was a most emotional day as I witnessed several of my Cambodian friends drying the tears from their faces and their family members holding back their own tears. The effects the Khmer Rouge are ever present to this day. It has taken me months to properly reflect on what transpired and the immense growth of the Cambodian people despite the setbacks they have had. I am proud and honored to know survivors, and am blessed to have witnessed their performance this day. They danced a traditional song taught about the days of the week - and the colors of each day represented a temperament and personality trait to coincide with the months. Yup - quite complex! I was stunned and awed! During the feast - a couple of the monks gestured to me, and gifted to my girls their sweets - green tea ice cream and mango ice cream. I did not want to have the monks pass up such a treat but they insisted and showed me with great delight what a blessing they had in seeing my girls grin ear to ear and bless us with a short prayer. And all this done sans words to boot! I bought a t-shirt as part of the fundraising going on for this location. I know I will return to pay my respects because of the survivors I have met, and befriended. All the major framing has been completed, - has been the interior of the temple needing to be finished. Most places we were walking on plywood (am not complaining about that - just this day it was the reality). I look forward to how much the temple develops and thrives in the upcoming years.

I do…read morechakra and kundalini meditation, mostly, but I was totally open to the idea of learning a new form, Shambhala, which means you meditate by focusing on one thing: your breath. This space is in the Aikahi shopping center, upstairs, in ste 205. The outside area is really nice, and the space for meditation is small, but efficient. Diane was the teacher I had when I went in on a Tuesday evening. She was very welcoming as people entered the room, explained that we could sit on a chair or a zabuton, which ever was more comfortable for us. If I was someone who had never practiced meditation, or had NO clue what was going on, I would appreciate this. As the class gets started Diane explains the meaning of shambhala, a bit of the history, and how it's different from other forms of meditation and what to expect. It's pretty simple, but we can all admit, that sitting, breathing and focusing on only your breath while letting all other thoughts that come into our mind go, it can be tricky, that's why this is called a practice. ;-) 15 min later, Diane rings the singing bowl and we do a 15 min walking meditation. I'd never done this type before, and I found it to be rewarding after sitting for 15 min in a lotus position. Then we all sit as a group, and meditate for 15 more min. So, 45 min total is a LONG time for a beginner, but I found it to be really wonderful. I never get that much time to meditate. Diane was available after the session was over if you wanted to talk to her or had any questions. It was nice to speak with someone with similar interest and who is just a very nice soul. She has great energy. From what I remember they have classes on Sunday's that start at 9AM - 11AM, Tuesday's from 6:30 - 7:30 and then I THINK Thursdays...I'll have to update this review if I'm wrong. They have a library in the space that has all sorts of books to help you on your spiritual path or journey and you can check them out, and bring them back, obviously. I think this place is fantastic, I loved coming here and see myself being a regular.
