Book the Hawaiian Foodie Bike Tour!…read more My wife and I recently rode this tour w guide Kelly Beck and had a delicious and filling time. Location: mainly Kapahulu Ave. and Monsarrat Ave., we often rode on the sidewalk which felt awkward to me but was safer than riding w busy traffic. Parking: we met our guide in the parking lot of Kapiolani Park, near the zoo, along Kapahulu Ave. Free parking and away from the crowds. Our guide: Kelly Beck. He was great - friendly, enthusiastic, and informative. He used a wireless speaker system, he had the microphone on his shirt and each of us had a wireless speaker attached to the handlebars of our bikes. We've been on other bike tours that didn't use this tech, using it enabled us to easily hear what he was saying as he led us. He's a former endurance athlete but the tour was easy - flat and low speed w frequent stops. Gear: - city bikes w multiple gears, fenders, good brakes, and clean. Each had a pouch in front to store stuff. - he supplied us w 3 large bottles of water, more than enough. - helmets: we previously told them I need an XL helmet for my big head and they remembered, it was a clean comfortably fitting helmet. This is where we went: -Diamond Head Market & Grill, Monsarrat Ave., *good, so good we returned for dinner: - miso ginger salmon, wasabi ahi, good sauce -South Shore Grill, was closed, fish tacos -ARS Cafe, coffee shop/food, we took a look inside -Rainbow Drive-In, just looked -Bailey's Antiques and Aloha Shirts, literally thousands of Aloha shirts, the racks were stuffed! -Da Ono: good lunch of lau lau, haupia, ube -Ono Seafood: we shared a small portion of poke (we had high expectations for this place but the poke was so-so) -Wailoa Shave Ice for a shave ice for each of us. -Leonard's! We each had a malasada, freshly fried and warm, yum. We rode through the the neighborhood on our return to the parking lot. Kelly gave us commentary on the houses, real estate, trees/plants, and the local customs and news. We're glad we booked this tour.

There were 6 of us ranging from generally sedentary to frequent scuba diver and Abby helped us through the swim-about by diving down to check out where the sea life was and video taping our experience. I loved being able to talk with her and ask her questions about the sea life we saw (so many fish and turtles!) and all about free diving in general. I felt very safe and cared for by these two. When the excursion was over, Philip was waiting for us with the boat and helped us to get back on -- with as much grace as possible. In both the ride out of and the ride in to the harbor, Abby educated us on how sensitive sea life is to our daily actions and suggested ways to support our oceans like using refillable water bottles and bringing your own bags when shopping. This duo was really great and I enjoyed every minute (except for when my hat flew off, but they were kind enough to turn around and get it). I highly recommend these snorkel tours.

[From my review on TripAdvisor]…read more We went on a Thanksgiving cruise (Grand Princess) to Hawaii, roundtrip from San Francisco. Our cruise ship had an engine fire, and so instead of having 4 port days (one on each island), we only had 2 port days in Honolulu. I was so glad to have booked the tour with Akima and Bob. This tour definitely "saved" our vacation! I learned about Akima and Bob's tour company, Hawaii Real Nature, through Groupon, but I booked directly with Akima since I have a young child and also needed a non-hotel pickup (at Aloha Tower Marketplace, where the cruise ship docked in Honolulu). The price that I paid was just as good, if not better, than the Groupon price so I highly recommend that you book through Akima directly. We went on the 8-hour West Oahu and snorkeling tour. Including us (family of 3), there were 6 people on the tour; the other three people were a retired couple and a young man. Along the way, Bob and Akima took turns telling us stories about Hawaii's history and culture as we stopped at sacred sites and historic landmarks. Due to the small size of the group, it was like hanging out with friends. We stopped at various places such as Ku'ilioloa Heiau, Kaneana Cave, Makaha Valley and Yokohama beach. Akima took pictures for us and they turned out beautiful. =) You should check out her photograph website. Her passion is in underwater and wildlife photography. What really stood out for me on this tour was how Akima and Bob managed two beginners during snorkeling. The retired lady and my 5-year-old daughter were completely new to snorkeling and Akima was extremely patient in helping them get set up and feel comfortable in the water. She had a torpedo-shaped buoy with handles that really helped my daughter feel confident in deep water. As a so-so swimmer myself, I would not have been able to expose my daughter to the wonders of snorkeling if it weren't for Akima and Bob. They are both certified divers and life rescuers so I felt completely comfortable entrusting my life (and my daughter's) in their hands during the guided snorkeling tour. When my daughter returned to school, she was telling everyone that she did snorkeling (even though she really just wore goggles and dunked her head into the water whenever I told her there were fish right under; I was snorkeling besides her). She even showed everyone a picture of her with an orange sea urchin on her head. Akima dove underwater and found one, and we all took turns "wearing" our sea urchin and posing for pictures. Next time we return to Oahu, I will definitely be booking another tour with Akima and Bob. The quality and price sure beats the excursions from the cruise ship. PRO TIPS: (1) Akima and Bob provide all the snorkeling equipment, including fins, goggles and tubes. My husband wears glasses so he just brought his own prescription goggles. (2) Bring towels, especially if you are going to snorkel. (3) The first stop we made was at a plaza with McDonalds and a supermarket. So there is no need to pack food. (4) Bring cash for tips. Akima and Bob deserve it! Visited December 2015
