Foreign Grill was decent. I didn't realize until I got there that it's a part of a food hall. Comfy booth seating and free wifi. Should've checked for plugs to see whether it could be a study/work spot. I found this place after going to a lovely Georgian spot in NY. Had to share the Kachapuri experience with the fam at home. But the hubby didn't feel like that much cheese (5 types, to be exact) tonight, and he opted for the plov plus some sort of dumpling (I picked khinkali based on the kind cashier's recommendation). Plov: I very rarely order rice dishes anywhere outside of the goat biriyani at Himalayas, but this turned out to be the best dish there. The lamb was so tender and the sauerkraut paired perfectly. The flavors were on point - but the dish was pretty small, and that I have a problem with. If a rice dish is $17 before tax, at least make it sizable. 4/5 due one point being docked for portion size. Khinkali: Really wanted to like this but at $17 for 4 dumplings, they needed to be phenomenal - and they didn't deliver. I like that they handmake it at the restaurant. I don't like that it was SO oversalted. So. Salty. And parts of the dough were undercooked. 2/5 Borscht: I added the borscht because a) I love borscht but more because b) the khinkali was so salty (have I said that yet?) and I was looking for something to balance it out. I even asked as I was ordering if it's not very salty. I hadn't ordered it originally because I didn't think a bowl of soup was worth $15 before tax. But I got it anyway, and I can say: 1. It's good - but still quite salty, and 2. It comes in an even smaller bowl than I had thought; 3. I still don't think it's worth it. 3.5/5 overall So that comes out to 3.17 stars on the food front. I'd give the cashier/cook/waitress 5/5 (maybe she owns it? Or is the manager?) though. For ambiance, I would give 3/5. If I ask myself how the visit was, I'd say it was ok but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back. For me that's a solid 3/5. read more

This was my first time having Ukrainian food. We ordered lamb khinkali, khachapuri, and chicken samsa. 1. Lamb khinkali-- no flavor at all. Felt like I was eating unseasoned, fatty lamb. The broth also had no flavor and was just liquid fat. (Yes I am aware lamb is a fatty meat but this was an extreme amount). I ate a bite and gave up. I couldn't get myself to eat another bite. It wasn't for me. 2 khachapuri--it was served piping hot. Was pretty good. The bread was soft and rich with the creamy and heavy filling. 3. Chicken samsa-- no for me. I had a few bites and then realized the chicken is really chicken etc. meaning it was chicken and whatever parts of the chicken (cartilage, collagen, fat etc.) if you're not used to eating this, it's a very strange texture. The pastry was flaky and crisp and the sauce it came with had some flavor but the filling lacked salt and basically seasoning. It came with a carrot salad(?) which had a strange after taste. I love all things veggies and I couldn't take more than a bite. The ambiance is a food hall with very loud music and super casual vibes. The price is very high for a food hall. We paid $55 (including two water bottles). If your meat has fillers (meat parts)--shouldn't it be cheaper? This place isn't for me sadly. I won't be coming back. Wishing them the best. read more

I stopped by Foreign Grill for dinner on a Thursday. Located in Stetsi Food Hall, I was super pumped to check them out. Why? While Houston has a great food scene, and a diverse one like that, Eastern European cuisine is lacking here. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the hype. Since Foreign Grill is located in a food hall, service and ambiance are not a big part of the experience. You order at the counter, and they bring your food to you. So let's focus on the core of all of this. The food. Foreign Grill features a mix of Georgian, Uzbek, and Ukranian food. I am a huge fan of Georgian food. I've had it in Russia and also at a wonderful Georgian restaurant in Tampa. When it comes to Eastern European food, it may be at the top of my list. One of the stars of Georgian cuisine is khacapuri. This incredible appetizer is basically a boat-shaped cheese bread (using local cheese). In the middle of a boat is an egg yolk that you then break and spread across your bread. Throw cheese on anything and it's better. Throw eggs on anything and it's better. These are two principles I live by. When done right, khacapuri is a warm delight. Foreign Grill sadly produces a mediocre one. First off, the size of it is on a small side. To the point where it's the smallest one I've had. And expensive for what you're getting. Also, it was served lukewarm. The khacapuri lacked the gooey cheesy flavor that makes it next level. And the bread itself lacked the oompf and freshness that I expected. Given how excited I was to try it, it was a big letdown. Perhaps other things on the menu are better. I appreciate the void they fill in Houston cuisine wise so I sure hope so! read more

Very good. The ladies working there were very nice and answered our questions. We had 2 different types of dumplings, soup, and Uzbek rice and beef dish. It was all so good. The dumpling dough was so fresh. The meat was so flavorful. The soup was just ok but not bad. It was all so good. The berry juice wasn't our favorite. A little watery but decent. It's in a food hall, FYI. We walked around but decided to eat here based off of the menu and seeing the ladies rolling the fresh dough and cutting up vegetables. I will definitely be back. read more

Tried them during a Yelp event and saw that they had khachapuri which I had tried in St Petersburg and fell in love with so I came back. I ended up getting the cheberuki instead because it was a new item and sounded delicious. Food came out piping hot and the carrot salad was spiced deliciously. The only issue I had with the cheberuki is that the meat flavor with the onion was so delicious that I wish there was more filling. There were pieces in my bites that were missing meet that I would have to drag over and cut a piece from. Perhaps this dish is supposed to be like this but the pictures on Instagram show that it is at least 75% filled and mine was not. The berry drink was also very good. I saw some people about this spot, and it looked like they offered a few things that I've never had so I decided to give them a shot. First of all with this place being inside a food hall, it's very casual and straightforward. I asked the lady at the counter for recommendations. She gave me a few options to try but I went with the kebab with the korean carrot slaw.The kebab itself was juicy, delicious and tasted fresh. The slaw was a refreshing addition to the meal, and the rice it came with was seasoned beautifully. Overall, pretty solid meal. Next time I want to try the other food options that I've never had before. It's a cool place that serve very diverse options. Definitely check them out! read more

First time trying Foreign Grill, located in the Stesti Food Hall in Midtown. They serve Ukrainian and Uzbek food. We tried the mastava, a traditional Izbek soup, and the pelmeni, which are little dumplings filled with ground beef. Both were absolutely delicious! I wish the mastava came in a larger portion. The portion is small for the price, in my opinion. I look forward to coming back to try other items. The only downside to the experience was the service. They forgot about our order essentially and it took over half an hour and the food hall was nearly empty. Not sure what happened! My friend and I came here and split the (bread cheese), mandy, and sauerkraut. We each got a cup of kampot as well. The dishes are a bit pricy but I would say overall very worth it! I was not very excited for the bread dish, but the cheese was melty and delicious, and we cut off pieces of the bread to dip in. The egg yolk was the perfect touch. The mandy was hot and spiced perfectly. The sauerkraut was so so good. It was nice and sour but not too salty. Very refreshing and nice flavor. I have never tried kampot before and expected it to be more juicy and sweet because of the color. It was actually very light and refreshing but retained the rich juicy flavor! read more

I'm being very generous by saying this place was extremely underwhelming and unimpressive. As someone who is very familiar with Central Asian food, and Uzbek food in particular, the food was not only "meh", it was the most ripped-off I've ever been in Houston, TX. I've posted a pic of the "family meal" which, when we got it, was hilarious. Maybe a family of 2 or maybe a family of little Hasbullas. But one person with a decent appetite would finish it by themselves easily. And it's $45! The menu is probably 45/55 Uzbek/Ukranian. For any Uzbek eatery, the kabablar needs to be outstanding and this was way below par from any kabab place on Hillcroft. I will absolutely not be back and I recommend you not waste your time and money on these very average (at best) kababs which are priced through the roof. And it's sad because there's no other Uzbek places that I know of in town. The Uyghurs used to serve good Uzbek dishes but they're long gone, sadly. read more

The rice was buttery and savory, and the acidity from the Korean-style carrots paired perfectly with the savory beef. The service is excellent; the staff were so inviting and talked me through the various dishes with a handy picture book. We went there couple weeks ago for a karaoke on Friday night. We had that family size kebab plate with all fixings and rice and pita bread. That was really fantastic. I liked that same chicken kebab for the same reason one of the commenters did not: it didn't really taste like chicken. It tasted better! All meat was fresh and juicy. The pita bread - we savored every piece of it. I only didn't care for napoleon cake - meh. Stale and tasteless. Most likely, previously frozen. Try the honey cake instead! I was very fortunate to discover the soft opening of Foreign Grill when I visited Conservatory Food Hall (corner of Smith and Dennis) for lunch today. Foreign Grill features dishes from Ukraine, Georgia, and adjacent nations. My goodness, the people who run Foreign Grill are super friendly and so excited to share their food. The Ukrainian Dumplings were bursting with flavor, and you can get them either with sour cream or in a chicken broth. I ate every last scrap of my sour cabbage salad, and washed it all back with a cherry juice that I believe they called kompot. For dessert I enjoyed honey cake, which is subtle and delicate (i.e. certainly not too sweet). I can't wait to return to try more dishes! My only minor gripe is that I felt the portions could have been a wee bit bigger for the price, but such is the way in 2023. Parking at Conservatory is a bit weird - just find somewhere along the street. I walked over because this food court was close to my home area. Foreign grill is a small shop. The girls there were quiet but pleasant. I can't say that the food was the best european/Mediterranean I've had. The best part of what they called a chicken kebab plate was the simple white rice and the flat bread it came atop on.
