I came in here just to get my glasses fixed because the tiny screws holding the frame together were either popped off or loose, and having to switch insurance plans during a pandemic means I haven't had a chance to meet my new eye doctor yet. Oof. But, by golly, if I could switch to this place, I would! Super efficient, friendly, and my glasses were fixed and cleaned in minutes (and I didn't have an appointment-- I was just a walk-in). The cherry on top: the gentleman working wouldn't even take my money. "It was just replacing a screw. It's on me." I mean... okay, I suppose it was just replacing a screw, but I don't have a screw that size or a screwdriver that small, so even that small job was an absolute lifesaver for me. I'm not one to leave reviews but I felt compelled to share my rave review of Dr. Lam. For years, I've been unhappy with my contacts, but was told it's the best they could do. Well, not according to Dr Lam, who after a thorough exam, offered me a new prescription to try. I can finally see clearly again! Worst eye exam ever. Dr. Man-Wa Lam gave me the wrong prescription. Glasses didn't work, had to go to another optometrist, who gave me a different, and correct prescription. Unprofessional exam, Dr. Lam blew his nose and threw tissue on exam table during exam, didn't wash his hands, rushed through the exam. Avoid this place. read more

These guys appear to be rip-off artists. I walked in to get a basic pair of glasses. According to my plan, I can essentially get a pair for free (excluding $25 copay). Single-vision, plastic lens, scratch-resistant coating, and a frame allowance of up to $195, are all included in my coverage plan. I'm initially quoted a figure of over $300+... That figure is then reduced after making certain modifications. The lowest I was quoted was $100+. I should be able to get a basic pair of glasses - for just the copay. Good quality glasses, fair prices. Needed a replacement pair of frames when mine snapped and they were very helpful and accommodating.

I called For Eyes because they take my insurance, and the friendly receptionist told me she could make a same day appointment for me after work, which I loved because it's can be hard to find places that will stay open late for medical appointments. When I came in, I was greeted by the lovely assistant in the back area, who checked me in and took my preliminary tests. She was so friendly, welcoming, and funny, and we actually had a good laugh together while she got me set up for my appointment. Dr Lam was kind and a total joy to have my appointment with. Even though I was his last client of the evening, he gave me a very through and thoughtful eye exam, and was happy to explain everything he was doing and how the process worked. He talked me though his thoughts on my new prescription, and asked about my needs and my opinion regularly to help make me feel comfortable and included in his decision process- the sign of a great medical provider in any field. somehow we even laughed and had a fun time during the process. I left feeling great about my first visit here, and I would highly recommend Dr Lam- he is a great guy and has hired lovely people to work with him. read more

During this summer on a camping trip I broke the left lens of my RayBan wayfarer sunglasses against a rock. Honestly, I thought to myself I can just buy another pair of lens and have them replaced but I didn't bother, because I was wondering if I can turn these into glasses which lead me to ForEyes. I work down the street from ForEyes, so I decided to stopped by. As soon as walked in, I met a nice young lady named Jamie who greeted me very nicely. She gave me information about my glasses and mentioned some sunglasses couldn't be turned in to prescription glasses so she took a look at mine and luckily mines were able to. Great! She asked for my prescription, but it's been over 13 years since I've had glasses (perfect timing) so no prescription whatsoever but that was fine because she recommended I get an exam. Therefore, we set up a date and time which went smoothly. They allowed me to pick a good time for me due to work. Everything worked out great. The eye exam with Dr. Lam went by so fast! He was a cool guy, he made sure when flipping the lens they were suited to my eyes. He honestly knew which lens was better for me. He recommended I go a little stronger on seeing farther. Overall, it took about a week for my glasses to get here. I called them after a week and they told me I had to wait for the shipment. It literally took 10 days. Saturday and Sunday must've not count as business days. Totally fine though because when I called they were honest! My glasses arrived on the days they said. Amy and Jamie were wonderful when I picked up the glasses. Jamie gave me a free cleaning cloth, cleaner, and case for my glasses! I was so happy when I got the case. Didn't think they give me one. Great service. Also I second guessed Dr. Lam about a strong prescription but they worked out fine! A little pricey but they'll get the job done! Quality is super nice. Satisfied customer. read more

Oh, the sordid and tragic affairs of me and my eye wear! Now matter how respectable and lovely at first, it always ended in woe. First there were the Italians, stylish and well-heeled. One vanished during a night of debauchery, never to be heard from again. The other got boring. Speed dial, deleeeeete. Next was the Japanese, impeccable and metallic with expensive taste. We spent a few years together until he could deal with me no more and broke beyond repair. I'm still mourning. In the midst of my despair and utter blindness, For Eyes emerged from the fog. I was coaxed in by their 2 for $99 deal and quickly welcomed by a host of kind, maternal ladies that waited patiently as I flitted around the store trying on pair after pair. There were a few designer brands, but the rows were mostly filled with reasonable, everyday types. Just what I was looking for. The one downside here is that it's out of network for the most common insurance (VSP), but they facilitate the reimbursement process, and it's rather painless. My prescription was faxed over and in just TWO DAYS I was sporting a sweet new look! Excellent customer service, rock bottom prices and a warm staff that makes you feel like you're nestled into a caring bosom. They made my hunt for a spectacle soulmate simple and rewarding. read more

When I first went into this store about 3 months ago, I asked for the manager , as I wanted to be sure they could actually make me very dark sunglasses of the type I already had. The woman said "oh, I'm co-manager." But, I should have insisted on talking to the actual manager (who absolutely was not her). She said they could and I left my sunglasses with them. They were gorgeously dark (so I didn't get headaches) and they looked great. I kept calling them, to see if they were ready. When they finally arrived, they weren't EVEN dark. It was pathetic. I asked the "comanager" at that time, could they please make them very dark as requested. She said yes, and the nice man attending also said "yes." They really meant "no," but who knew? Third time I go there, still very light lenses , not dark. I demand to see the "MANAGER" and ignore the "co managers " insistance that she can handle it. Manager comes out, says this was the best they could do. I say, well, then just put my old lenses back in . They'll at least work until I find a fix for this problem. He said they don't have them. I ask if he could then at least mirror tint them. He said "no, but I'll give you $100 for the inconvenience." That 100 didn't cover the horrible headaches I've been getting . I'm trying to find another place that can actually do what they promise. Ridiculous really!! read more

Worse place ever to get a pair of glasses. Customer service was horrendous. When I was getting my glasses fitted, the guy who is usually at the counter, was terrible. I was looking around for someone else to perhaps help me but seems like everyone was out to lunch or something. So had no luck. He tried to make it fit by bending the end of the glasses, but the way he was bending it was so unprofessional that rather than the usual bend on the ends, he was bending it sideways that it was out of shape!! And when I pointed it out to him, he became defensive and very very rude. He told me practically to shut up and let him do his job which he wasn't doing in the first place because I had to tell him the problem. Anyway, after trying twice, I just gave up and said it's fine, and walk out. Will never return here at all cost and definitely will tell everyone I know to never go here. Hope this place improve their customer service or I foresee it closing down. Do not be fooled by the ratings. I can't say about Dr. Kao which all the good ratings are for, but majority of negative ratings were for their customer service. So it shows you what the stores' problem is! read more

I don't give out 5 stars, but Dr. Channon Kao deserves a 6 plus. 1) I came here for an eye/contact lens appointment and she was extremely friendly, professional, and quick. She also gave me plenty of travel size solutions for my trips back and forth from the east coast. My insurance doesn't cover contact lens prescription and it only cost me $99.00 . If you are an east coast transplant, you will like her. 2) Yesterday, I cut my eye (or at least I think I did). I slept on it and it was still brothering me in the morning. Like any working professional, I have deadlines this morning and didn't care to spend 1 day in the ER for them to prescribe me eye drops or tell me everything was okay. However, it was irritating. I called Dr. Kao in the morning and described her my symptoms. She was wonderful times 10. She told me it was probably a mild abrasion and recommended me to pick up some eye drops or go to an over the counter pharmacy to pick up a specific brands. She also told me to call in the morning and if it is getting worst that she would prescribe me some antibiotics. In a nutshell, I was really to go in 10 minutes. I think I am going to get my new pair of glasses from here now. 10 stars!!! read more

I was looking for a local optometrist and ordered two boxes of contact lenses from them. Paid in full. Including the eye exam. Then heard nothing for a week. Had to travel to Europe soon so I called to find out if I could pick up the lenses. They had no idea where they were and wanted to follow up. Two more weeks went by and again I heard nothing. So when I had to leave to Europe I went there and again they still had not received lenses nor did they know where the lenses are. So they gave me a test pair to travel. After I returned from Europe I called because, what a surprise, I still had not heard anything. I reminded them that I had paid but still not received anything and that it would be unprofessional that they would not follow up and never call to give updates. So finally going on week 6 they called and had lenses. I picked them up put them in and realized they gave me the wrong ones. Bifocal come in two versions center distance and center near. In the box it is labeled as D or N. When I called Mr Smith to tell him that I had reached my point where I give up on them he did not understand what was wrong. I had to explain what D and N lenses are and then he said : "well you have to show me the box" I lost it... And they lost a customer... What a unique place... read more

3 1/2 stars I went in today for an eye exam as well as getting a new pair of glasses. There was no waiting and the place was pretty empty except for one other couple looking at frames. I saw Dr. Kao, who was very welcoming and friendly. She took her time and asked me relevant questions regarding my eyesight. I would give 5 stars for Dr. Kao if this review was just about the clinic side of For Eyes. As for the eyewear side of the store, my experience wasn't as great as I read on other reviews. The place was not busy at all, but I ended up standing there for about 10 minutes just half waiting and half browsing through the slightly small selection of frames. When I was finally helped (by a woman whose name I forgot but starts with an E), I felt a little rushed into making my choice. E handed me frame after frame to try on. I suppose some might take this as good customer service, helping the customer pick frames and all, but I felt like she was being a little pushy about it. The frame selection was decent, but I think the style of the frames, from one brand to another, was very similar. So similar, in fact, that nothing stood out to me. The selection for the "2 pairs for $99" promotion was very limited as well. I ended up leaving the store without buying new frames. **I read on someone else's review that they gave a "hush-hush non-advertised student discount" but I don't think that is true. I asked E about it, and she said they do not have discounts. So either she didn't like me and didn't want to give me a discount, the discount is only for returning customers, or the discount is a periodical thing. read more

I would first like to start off by saying that I had great experiences in the past with Dr. Kao and her medical assistant. Unfortunately, I had a sequence of visits with Dr. Smith which resulted is me switching over to a new provider. The eye exam with Dr. Smith was very rushed and unorganized. Since I have bad eyesight, I could barely see any of the black lines required for the peripheral eye exam. When this was brought up with Dr. Smith as a reason why my results were off, he recommended me to come back the following week and to do it again. Of course, I had the same issue again, and Dr. Smith recommended that I go see a specialist (after going on a long talk about how my results were so abnormal), and suggested that it was "possible" me being unable to see the black lines might have had an effect on the exam. Another thing to note; I waited in the lobby for over an hour for my appointment, which is understandable for a small practice. What wasn't fine was the fact that I was barely acknowledged, and Dr. Smith did not apologize when my appointment started. I saw a different provider not too long after my final visit with Dr. Smith, and not only did they find out my glasses and contacts prescription were incorrect, I had no issue at all with my eyesight. The eye exam there also took twice as long. I used to like this office when the previous optometrists worked here, but I will no longer go here, and do not recommend this place if you want a thorough eye exam. read more

This review is only for my phone interaction with this office. I just recently tried to make an appointment for my 3 year old and they had a same day appointment at 3:00pm I wanted to take it but it just seemed like each answer I was getting from the gentlemen on the phone was making it difficult. Just the brief interaction over the phone convinced me enough I don't want to take my daughter there. If a simple phone call can't be easy imagine trying to get glasses from them if needed. The optometrist here was the BEST optometrist I've ever had! I've been going to an upscale optometrist here in Berkeley for years, and only ventured into For Eyes because I couldn't get an appointment for disposable contacts fast enough with my regular upscale optometrist. What a surprise I was in for! The optometrist at For Eyes Berkeley was incredibly thorough - much more thorough than anyone I've gone to in 35 years! - and he adjusted my prescription so that I see much clearer than I have since college. And there was no issue in making a same-day appointment. I can't recommend the experience enough. read more

This is the best Eye Optic Center in East Bay. I used to visit and buy glasses and contact lenses from different optics but these guys are the best. They had a very good selection of frames and lenses and they spent lots of time help me choose what is the best for me. I got a deal for 2 glasses and I chose 2 designer frames, first by Polo Ralph Lauren and 2nd by Burberry. I have them on for about 2 weeks and so far they are so really good, day and night. My progressive lenses I got from them are so good, they are 1.74 index slim, anti glare and HD. I ski with them on, run, drive at night, work as a tech, no issues. Thank you one more time for all employees who work there, they all helped me at some point. Highly recommended 5 star read more

I actually had a pretty stellar experience here. I made a next-day appointment over the phone without too much trouble, they got me in like 2 minutes after I arrived, and I really liked my eye doctor. We ended up chatting during my appointment about some pretty random stuff (he found out that I work in publishing and started telling me about the book he had published, yada, yada, yada). I used to go to Lenscrafters when I lived in Maryland, and though I never had any complaints, I now realize what it's like to have a check-up from an optometrist who seems to actually care about his patients. He was efficient, yet thorough, and even though I don't have insurance, the check-up only cost me $99, even with dilated pupils, contact samples (I was on my last pair by the time I saw him - hence the need for a visit), and a new contact solution and case kit. That's a pretty stellar rate, considering that's the same price as an appointment at Costco, and you don't have to worry about weaving your way through people pushing giant carts full of bulk items. read more

I bought a pair of glasses and one of the lenses kept popping out on the the very first day I wore them. I brought them back to the store and was told that they had to send them back to the lab (I thought they did the lens work on-site, but I was wrong ). I had to wait two weeks for them to be fixed. I picked them up two weeks later and the one lens just doesn't sit in the frame properly - it's a poorly made pair of glasses. I wanted a second pair last month so I went to Costco this time. Costco prices are much better than For Eyes and their frames are top of the line. For Eyes frames were $100 and up, Costco has a ton of really trendy and modern looking glasses starting at only $40. My wife not only noticed more frame options at Costco, but more affordable ones as well. All of their lenses already include ant-reflective coating, which makes it an even better bargain. read more

Liar Liar, I just called here to ask if they could look up my Ray Ban frame (extremely common brand) because I want to order another pair. I told the man on the phone that I wanted to get a quote for lenses and an eye exam as well because I'm due for one. He told me what it would cost for my new lenses and eye exam. $179 for the lenses with anti-reflective coating. $ 59 for the eye exam. Then I asked if he could look up my frame and tell if its seven possible to order them and what the cost would be. My frames are two years old so this is a reasonable request. This is where he began to stumble. He told me that he can't look frames up over the phone and that they need to scan a bar code...? Really? That sounded WRONG, so then I said; " so I need to come in the store for you to look up my frame?" Yup!! Even though I have the frame number and eye size right here on my face. I said thanks anyways and hung up. So this man, who had an accent (didn't get his name), is a liar. FACT. I called the other For Eyes store and the man on the phone did manage to take my information and said he would look up the price and availability for me and give me a ring back. I'm waiting for my call back now. Regardless, this other store is too far from Oakland for me to go to and because that first guy LIED to me I will not be getting my glasses from them. I'd rather spend my money someplace else and write this review to let you know not to bother. Staff informed me: (1) the doctor was not in, (2) they did not know when/if the doctor would be in, (3) they did not know what appointments the doctor had scheduled or any way of finding out when the next available appointment is, and (4) they could not schedule an appointment. So, translated: ME: I would like to give you some money. FOR EYES: Great! We don't know how or when or if you'll be able to do that. Read my experience below and a comment I heard him say to another customer. I was trying to compare my optometrist's selection of frames to eye wear stores such as For Eyes, Site for Sore Eyes - searching for a frame that I would really love at a reasonable price range. I found a couple of frames I was interested in and at first I thought old guy was truly interested in helping me. I told him I like this frame and want transitional lenses. I was set. Then he told me about a deal in which I could buy one frame and get a sunglasses too. I think the deal was $50 off a second pair. I told him I wasn't interested in sunglasses bc I wear contacts and did not need prescription sunglasses. But he was so pushy and calculated that I would save money and get two glasses. He insisted that was a great deal!!! . I argued with him a little then finally gave in. I thought he was right in the end bc I have 2 pairs of glasses rt??? Now I am completely disappointed. I only wear my glasses indoors and can't outside bc it is not transitional. If I want to wear the sunglasses I have to bring my glasses with me because it's fine wearing sunglasses outside but when I'm in a store I can't see! It's dark!! So now I have to carry 2 pairs with me all the time??? It's ridiculous. I should have never let him get to me. I barely use those sunglasses. This is the comment he made to an older Asian lady who I presume he thought was ignorant. I was picking up my glasses when he was interacting with her. Like me , she didn't see the need for two glasses. He said "I don't just have one pair of pants, I have many pants, four, five. Do you think I would wear the same one pants over and over?" They are the best! I've been going there for many many years. (I haven't been to the doctor, just the front.) DO NOT GET THIS MIXED UP WITH "SITE FOR SORE EYES", just down the street. That is a horrible place, with a famously mean owner (Paul). Check out their reviews. (I have a feeling that a couple of the bad For Eyes reviews were actually intended to be for the other one I can't believe that anyone has ever been yelled at at For Eyes) I wish that For Eyes were in my vision plan (VSP). I have a large copay because they are "out-of-plan", but it's worth it. For Eyes with copay is a little more than the in-plan, and there is a lot more choice (and friendlier people, especially Ella and Paula.) I can't says 5 1/2 because the street parking or the garage are expensive, and YELP does not permit 5 1/2. Oh well. read more

Was led to believe when in store buying glasses that I would receive more money back from insurance co than I did. When I was told later that I would not receive what they told me that they could not tell this at the time. So why tell a customer that they would receive an additional $ at time of sale if they could not truly say that there would be additional insurance funds that would make this a "great deal". You know, I wanted to like this place. It had great reviews, is like literally 5 minutes from my job, and has decent hours. But I don't like it. I've gone in twice and neither experience has made me want to be a "regular" at this optometrist. My usual optometrist is in San Francisco and not convenient for me to just get up and go to. ( I live in El Cerrito now, you see. ) SO, I was a hussy and cheated on my usual place that I had been faithful to for 11 years. Don't judge me. So, I was in dire need of contacts and annoyingly my prescription was expired. It was so hard to get an appointment anywhere but here. And my fellow yelpers had given it good reviews, for the most part. So I got there early, filled out some paperwork and was taken in to have my eyes checked. I can't remember the doctors name but it was an Asian woman. She was very quiet, straight to the point, and not very warm. I'm not saying be my best friend and chop it up with me, but damn. Not to mention that was absolutely the most un thorough eye exam I've had in my life. Do I have to pay extra for you to actually check the health of my eye? Maybe i do. I don't know. But I know Visionarium (my main optometrist squeeze) would never do me like that. I felt so rushed out and there wasn't even anyone waiting after me. And today...the final straw that possessed me to write this review... I went in to order contacts and asked if I could have a pair to hold me over until they came into the store. I was told no, because the eye doctor wasn't there so they couldn't give me one. WHAT THE EFF? You're open for another two hours and your eye doctor is gone. I'm sorry, what? Like you can't walk in that office, which had the door ajar mind you, and snatch me up a pair? Shady activity. Its not like it was locked up. Never had this problem at my usual spot!! Is there a ZERO rating? This remains one of the worst eyewear retailers. My husband (who looked after me during a long severe illness this past year) was told by store in SF that he could return his previous contacts for new ones with his new prescription. When he showed up @ Berkeley store, he was told flatly NO. That is not our policy. When he told mgr that the optometrist @ The SF For Eyes assured him the exchange could be made, the mgr said "oh Dr. Lem is not a For Eyes employee". Wow. Such a shoddy business. Glad that I've found other great places to get eyewear much cheaper, more stylish, with way better customer service. read more

Dr. Kao is an amazing eye doctor. She recognized two decades ago that people who are near sighted needed a separate prescription for doing computer work. No other eye doctors out there that I knew were this much on the cutting edge of what computer work signified in relationship to eyesight. Dr. Kao also has a charming personality and is both efficient and extremely skilled at what she does. I highly recommend my experience over many decades with her. I am now living in Marin and happily drive to Berkeley to see her. read more

I came here in March 2016 for my first optometry visit in years, knowing I'd need corrective lenses because street signs had been blurry and it was even difficult to read subtitles. I called on a day off and was able to get an appointment same day. By the time I finished filling out paperwork, the doctor was able to see me. While I forget the doctor's name (I'll edit this when I find the card), she was really patient, kind, efficient and kinda funny ("You're good at guessing, aren't you?" when I'm trying to read the letters). She explained my rx and the process to get the glasses, and made sure I understood everything before leaving the room. I had a Groupon that was $35 to get $200 off Toughlite (scratch-resistant) lenses, and so with the frames I chose my total for eye exam + glasses was a little over $200. I was happy enough with the selection of frames; again these were my first pair of glasses so if you know you tend to be more selective, it's worth going in to check it out. The staff person that helped with the fitting was very personable and went over costs using different discounts they offered, but in the end the Groupon was the best deal because I got the higher-quality lenses.
