I went into this business because I conjectured it would be an exquisite record store specializing in dance music. Guess what my inquisitive kittens? I guessed correctly. Footwork Records is one of the best record stores for used & new dance music in the country. Factor in that a lot of the large scale stores are drifting further towards selling new records & re-issues exclusively, and this store may already be in the top three record stores for dance music, and it has only been open a few days. Dakin Auret, the owner, has curated an impressive, neatly organized, and properly packaged inventory of dance music. I saw rare house compilations, remixes of house classics, Mark Henning, OM records releases, 187 Lockdown, and a whole sweet haul of other singles and bops by the heroes, homies, and ladies of the music industry. I'm certain the copy of Modjo's "Lady" is gone by now. A lot of practiced local DJs were coming through and buying up Dakin's inventory when I was there. As for Dakin himself, I found him quite personable, and he was quick to explain how the store came to be. He offered everyone who came through the door coffee or water, and talked congenially with each customer. He even shared that his parents helped him to put some of the finishing touches on the store, and he directed me to a legit black and white photo of his parents celebrating with some music at their wedding. A real bright spot on 3rd Street. I wish this store much longevity & lasting success. There is no stopping excellent dance music in vinyl format, and Dakin's early success attests to it.

If you've lived in Long Beach for any length of time, you undoubtedly know of Fingerprints. After…read more30+ years, it is undoubtedly the largest music store in Long Beach, and one of the largest in SoCal. We were there for Record Store Day. Loved the special deals they offered that day and having the chance to listen to a few bands over the course of the day (and get some merch signed!). I think their old store was better for listening, since there was a clear area for the audience--in the current store, we were tucked between shelves of merchandise--but it still worked and we had no problem seeing or hearing the bands. I particularly enjoyed seeing Violet Grohl and her band that day. Dave Grohl was there, but as a member of the audience. It was fun rocking out with him to his daughter's tunes (even if he was a couple of rows away). Love the staff. Rand, one of the owners, in particular, is incredibly knowledgeable. He also does a great job of lining up events and bands. We had such a great day at Fingerprints!

Patrons were cutting in line and arguing and no one from the store was helping. Employees were told several times and they just didn't seem to care and nothing was said to anyone causing the disturbances. When I called today and told the person about what went on, I believe he said his name was Brandon, he said that people need to be better in line and not cut because they were really busy and did their best. I went there to have fun and not to fend off people cutting in line or arguing with each other. Also, the reason I gave two stars is because I ordered an album online from their store that was exclusive to Record Store Day and the order went through and my credit card was charged. I was very excited since that album was sold out everywhere. Two days later, I get an email from Fingerprints saying they are out of stock and canceled the order. When I called and asked, the explanation was the "count was off" and they sold more than they had. My experience with this store has not been good except for the actual concert that took place inside of it. He said sorry you had a bad experience and that was that. No offer to try to get me the album I ordered. I also had to ask when I'll get my credit card charge back. I'm still unclear about that. Look, I know this store is busy and especially right now because of Record Store Day but to let customers order actually go through and for two days let them think they're getting what's sold out everywhere just to tell them oh we made a mistake with the count, is just not good business. I was counting on them.

The two most salient facts I need to include here about this brand-spanking-new beaut of a record…read morestore are as follows: 1. This store is owned by Hector W. This man is the resident DJ at an event called Funky Sole, which occurs regularly on Sunset Blvd. 2. DJ Dennis Owens of The Good Foot at Alex's Bar is going to work at this record store. These two men are obviously exceptionally knowledgeable on the topics of funk music, soul music, and record sales. I am not as familiar with Hector, the owner, but I was present for the grand opening. Hector effected a calm, professional demeanor and managed to pull off a truly grand opening. The inventory of the store really soulidified my opinion of Hector. I saw countless essential and rare records from all major genres. The crate diggers came out for this one, and the inventory at Twelves had them foaming in the New Arrivals section. Credit to Hector's music taste for the event's success. DJ Dennis Owens was, is, and will be as indispensable to Twelve's success as Hector. Dennis has extensive experience in the music industry, record sales, and vinyl collecting. I have seen him DJ a couple times now. The man is a turntable wizard. DJ Dennis knows all genres of music. His soul record sets are particularly exquisite. He did a guest DJ set at the opening, and he informed me he will be working Wednesdays at Twelves. Take it from me: take any and all pieces of advice or recommendations that DJ Dennis Owens gives. He is thoroughly involved in the world of DJ music and prides himself on remaining conversant in all things tunes. I repeat: listen to this guru. The decor really fit the music on sale and the sensibility of anyone who loves funky soul beats. I saw a few great promo posters from old soul concerts. The records sit neatly in unpretentious bins. One distinctly pretty piece of Keith Haring's art rests against the wall just above the cash register. That Haring poster really ties the whole record store together, and I hope it stays up there for years to come. I loved what I saw in the inventory too. Plenty of soul, funk, and disco hits. James Brown, Funkadelic, and Donna Summer were there. Ditto Brenton Wood. I ended up buying a couple 45s and one disco 12". DJ Dennis Owens nodded at one of my 45s because it was a copy of Funkadelic's "Not Just Knee Deep." Just one example of the funky goodness to be had at low cost in Twelves. I'll be back on the night train to acquire more Soul Power in the future.
