Hands down our new favorite vinyl store! Store was well organized and clean. Lots of selections and records are in prime condition and reasonably priced. Great shop. I love coming here. The owner greets you when you enter, but doesn't bug you. The first time my friend and I came, he was chatting with someone for most of the time we were there. He's had the store for 20 years, so probably some long time local guy. When we checked out, he asked our names and was really nice. I haven't checked out the large jazz section yet, but he has extensive R&B and a decent rock section. Since most other record stores I go to are way heavier on the rock music (which I do love), it doesn't bother me that jazz and R&B dominate here. I've still found some solid rock albums here though. I usually come up with something great in his dollar section too. I found a copy of Prince's Dirty Minds in that bin...and then the next day, he died. I am not joking. On subsequent visits, we've been more chatty with the owner. We feel like regulars now :-) If you ask if he has something, he usually knows if its in the racks somewhere. He mentioned he has thousands more albums that aren't on the shelves, so if you're looking for something specific, make sure to ask and definitely pop in more than once. I like the store itself too - I saw at least one stool that you can sit on or rest your knees on when digging through lower bins - which is something more stores should consider. I swear, I'd dig longer in some places if my knees and legs could handle it. So, smart move here. The store is also well lit, which caught me off guard. It's great because you can get a better look at the records - I just wasn't expecting it since some stores are so poorly lit. One of my favorites. My bf used to come here a lot back when we lived in LA (late 90's and early 2000's). He used to tell me about the owner Erving, who would school him on vinyl, what's new, and classic, give him the dopest deals and was just plain ole down to earth. We haven't checked out the spot in a minute, but last time I was there, he schooled us on Anthony Hamilton before he was really known. We let him know what's up with Dwele, and we were even... Copped a couple records, and he even threw in a couple for Free. Weird hours, but worth the trouble if your are a music fanatic or vinyl fiend. Much Respect ERV! read more

In many ways PM Sounds reminds me of the late Goat Hill Records in old town Goat Hill aka Costa Mesa . After awhile I didn't even bother to examine the vinyl because I knew Tom would not deal with scratches. PM Sounds is just like that. The records are very clean and priced right. The Jazz section is easily the best I have seen in some time, if not ever for a record store of this size. Unlike Goat Hill it's a very easy store to move around in. Spacious and clean. I've been buying vinyl since the early 1990's and I am glad PM Sounds exist for those in South Bay. They carry almost exclusively vinyl! They have a great selection of Jazz, Soul, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Disco, and Electro 12" and LPs. The prices are a bit quite high compared to the quasi independent Amoeba (LA, SF) or Rasputin's (Bay Area) but a quick check on eBay and Discogs.com then the P.M. Sounds prices come close. The 12" section has many older Hip-Hop from the 1980's priced from $4.98 to $7.98. I also found a good selection of electro records and could probably put a nice 50 minute mix with the titles in stock. If you are into Electronic, Punk, Classical you probably will want to go elsewhere. PM Sounds also has a small section dedicated to older audiophile equipment with brands like Technics, Pioneer, NAD, JBL stacked They do have a $0.99 cent bin but those bins have too many junk commercial rap record promos that get dumped on all SOCAL record stores. However if you are into sampling for production purposes you will find some audio testing records, obscure funk/soul titles, and Sergio Nendes albums to lift from. The store is well lighted, extremely clean (I didn't sneeze or sniffle from the dust record shops tend to have), and their is an abundance of framed artwork, gold/platinum records, rare jazz pressings, autographed photos to stare at and appreciate. For those who have a difficult time bending down or sitting on the floor to look through the stacks of records they have a comfortable mini stool and chair to make it easier for "digging" A Bank of America is located across the street for convenience. Street parking on weekdays is limited to 2 hours and hard to come by unless it's the weekend. read more

Really love the jazz, r&b selection here! The prices could be a bit more than you expect sometimes, but usually they are pretty reasonable. I found about ten Ahmad Jamal records, while I had a huge difficulty finding more than one in any other record stores (think Record Recyclers, Amoeba, etc.). I just bought a new turntable so I could listen to all of my oldies from the 70's, 80's and 90's. I didn't realize how badly I treated albums. Lots of skips and warps. :( I was looking for vinyl shops in the area and came across PM Sounds. Some great finds and because it was such a hot day, the AC really helped. He's the man ! I've picked up fabulous copies of Roger Troutman LP's & Roger 12 inches from him since i'm a big Zapp & Roger fan. There's a lot of records of course - especially lots of jazz, R&B, Soul, Funk, some hip hop & a lot of 12 inches to be found. Theres also a selection of CDs, which features out of print CDs & super audio CDs. He's also got stereo equipment that he has & its a nice addition, particularly for audiophiles & sound guys that are into the quality of sound. He's also got some really cool decor in his store that comes with some cool stories about who's met or known in his time doing music. Picked up some amazing records here today including a Temptations album I've never seen and a Four Tops album that's been on my wishlist for ages, never been able to find. Met Irvin (Erwin?) and had a lovely conversation about my growing motown collection. Prices are fair depending on rarity and condition. There were two Marvelettes albums that were priced quite high but I know I will probably never see them elsewhere. Those two are on my Christmas list for sure. I would definitely recommend visiting. I was thrilled to find three Martin Denny albums and even some Neil Diamond in the .99 bin. I was looking for queen, eagles and Johnny cash - This shop had none of it. Their rock section looks like it was picked over of anything decent. However I did find 2 nostalgic rap albums (nelly and ludacris) for a GREAT price. The store seems to be more black music focused, with large soul, r&b, and jazz sections. There's probably some good stuff in there but I'm too ignorant to know. This is also the cleanest store I've been in, from la to sf. Everything is plastic wrapped and he had a record cleaner buzzing away. The owner seemed like a real good guy. read more

I've been going for almost 2 years now. If people from all over the LA county are driving to Torrance to come here, they must be good right? WRONG! THEY ARE GREAT!!!!! You name him an Artist and song title, and he'll know immediately if he's got it or not. **i think its off the top of his head** I'm pretty young, record stores started disappearing in my childhood. I'm from the Warehouse Music time period, and so i'm not used to people who ACTUALLY KNOW MUSIC!!!! So I'm not sure if PM Sounds is an example of how record stores are/were supposed to be like, but the other record stores i've been to have employees that are completely useless for anything other than ringing me up. Some which can't even do that. I just came back from PM Sounds right now, I've had some issues with a turntable and needed a repair guy that was local, and Erving recommended a shop around the corner. truly AWESOME!!!!!! read more

I found PM Sounds by accident back in 2005 as I was walking on my way to the Red Car Brewery. That was probably one of the best days of my life. I love music and here I found the owner Erving Johnson who has a vast knowledge of music and vinyl. I like to call this place the "Diamond Jewel" of the South Bay. Right away when you step inside the vibe is very cool, relaxed and friendly. There is an awesome collection of music artwork on the walls, rare records and photos. Selection of vinyl ranges from Jazz, Soul, R & B, Rock, Cinema, Blues, International, Vocalists and there is also a nice selection of CD's. He also has a bargain bin. I have kept coming back here because I keep finding treasures. The condition of the product at PM Sounds is top notch. There is also a selection of refurbished turntables. It is always a positive and refreshing experience to look through the stuff in the bins and talk music with other audiophiles who frequently visit the store so you also learn something when you get over here. Last, this is in Old Torrance and down the street are some good places to eat at and antique shops to check out. I definitely have this as one of my destinations. read more
