I stumbled upon Food World about a year ago thinking it was still Waldbaum's. I was doing my "Earth Day Recycling" and the redemption center at King Kullen down the road was full. I remembered there was another food store close, so I headed down. I was surprised at first and a little turned off that I wasn't going to a big named food store. Would they even have a recycling area? Well, they sure did...AND it was outdoors. Outdoor redemption centers are a treat, especially in April. Bee's and yellow jackets aren't around yet, and there is no stinky, sticky beer-soda sweet mess you are smelling or stepping in. Bleh. There was no one redeeming their cans there so I was able to quickly do my recycling part. Got my tickets and headed into Food World to redeem my $12.35. I was pleasantly surprised! I decided to do a little browsing and the produce section was right there. It was gorgeous and competitively priced. OK, liking this place...I walked up and down each aisle and was very impressed. They had the usual food store items but a lot of exotic things you don't see in your everyday grocery store. The place looked clean and was pretty spacious. They also still carried fresh Irish Soda Bread, a month after St Pat's....(the Irish will appreciate that.) Comes in handy when you have a craving! When I went down the frozen aisle, I noticed they had Key Food branded items. Red flag? Nope, once I reached the register the person before me presented her Key Food Saving card. COOL. They sell Key Food stuff I guess. Although I didn't buy anything, I cashed my redemption tickets in and knew I'd return. Especially for that Irish Soda Bread...

I have been coming to this grocery store about a year now. I'm a fan of this grocery store because it has a lot of the Caribbean items we use to cook. The store is pretty big and the parking lot is a decent size. I would not advise you to come here on the weekends. It can get really crazy. The aisles are well stocked with almost every brand you can ever need. They don't sell a lot of organic brands, but they do have a few of the major organic brands. Like almost every grocery store, they have a deli section. In my opinion, they sell the best crab salad I have ever tasted. I would recommend it. They have a lot of cashiers, so check-out is easy (on a good day). Overall, I would recommend this grocery store. The customer service is good. If you need help anyone of the store clerks are willing to help.

After attempting to scan several items in accordance with the instructions being broadcast from the machine, the machine appeared to malfunction and was not registering all of the items and then broadcast an alert to wait for assistance. In fact, several of the machines simultaneously starting announcing the same message. The same young man, after attending to another customer, came over to me and accused me of deliberately not scanning items and then started cursing in English and Spanish. At the time, I cautioned him about his profanity but I still feel I need to bring to the store's attention the inappropriateness of the attendant's behavior. His false accusations were extremely offensive and coupled with the frustration of using machines that are possibly defective gives me pause about continuing to shop at a store where I have been shopping for over 50 years--when as a teenager in the 1970s, the same building was a Pathmark supermarket. Needless to say, if I continue to shop at this store, I will absolutely steer clear of the self-checkout machines. But more importantly, customers and older shoppers should not be abused and insulted by someone with little to no experience and clearly no aptitude for customer service.

I was in the area and decided to stop by and I believe it was few days before Christmas or New Years and I could've slapped myself. LOL. This place is known to always be crowded so you know it was extra crazy right before a holiday. The parking lot drama was just like I remembered it "hectic." The spots are tight and very busy. Now for the good, LOL. They have tons of Caribbean foods and ingredients you cant find in your typical supermarket. When my cousin visits NY she always want to stop here to pick up some items for her Caribbean dishes. They have a huge fruit and vegetable area that is packed since its the first area you visit when you walk in. I always pick up items I don't find in my neighborhood. I grabbed some cut up chicken to curry and these biscuit like snacks called Shirley that come in a few different flavors that I loove. I also re upped on some of the spices. The lines to check out were loooooonnnnngggg and I remembered looking in my cart seeing if I really wanted my groceries. I sucked it up and waited about 30 minutes. Do NOT go during a holiday, periodt! LOL. The staff are not the friendliest but you have to come in here with a mindset that you gotta do what you have to do and try to finish as quick as you can in this fast paced and always crowded supermarket. This place has Trader Joes beat in terms of crowds and frenzied.

If I went to BJ's I can get a bigger bag. So here's my comparison - Stop & Shop: $11.99 for 22 oz ~$0.545 per ounce - BJ's: $21.99 for 64 oz ~$0.343 per ounce, that's a 36% savings at BJ's. While Stop & Shop is banking on impulse buys and smaller package margins my delayed gratification and bulk economics of BJ's win out, which makes me a winner. I refuse to purchase from Stop and Shop that day but they may have a better bargain another day.
