We always go to cross Island for fruits and vegetables. It's a nice store and they have a wide varied selection of all kinds of vegetables. If you're in the area, you must go over there. I must say, though that there has been one disappointment lately. They used to carry a brand of cannoli cookies made by Maria's Taralli. For reasons unknown to me they stopped carrying them and now carry a different kind of cannoli cookie, which does not measure up. Please bring back Maria's cannoli cookies. They are the best. I had to find another store that carried them, and I will include pictures of the most delicious cannoli cookies. read more

Went in the night before the blizzard, how silly it sounds but when I stocked up on everything else at another store earlier, I forgot an onion I needed for a recipe & was passing by. The store wasn't as packed as I imagined, but everyone's carts were full as I'm on line for one silly little onion. I only was in the produce section in the front of the store, but everything was clean and smelled so fresh. The girl at the cash register was very friendly as well. read more

Its a wonderful market that had separate concessions within. You pay in each concession you shop in. There is a butcher shop, Italian Deli, seafood & Fish, Plus of course the supermarket with a huge vegetable & Fruit selection. They have an abundant amount of annuals & plants that are VERY reasonable. The veal cutlets soft as could be, the rice balls and potato croquettes delish, roasted peppers and black olives wonderful. This is a very old fashioned Italian-American style old NY style of grocery store. They have products and produce here that you won't find anywhere else, except an Italian specialty market. I can always count on them for beautiful broccoli-rabe and escarole. I come here for my hard to find Italian groceries like decaf espresso powder, Anna pasta and Brioshci (I actually get the Galeffi). And of course a box of Torone. In the back is a great little meat market where I get some of the best pork chops and my Bell & Evan's chicken. They also have great sausages, pinwheel steaks and really nice burgers and ground meat. All perfect to add to my Sunday sauce with a nice hunk of braciole or throw on the grill. I was here recently and I was hoping that the deli & bakery would be open, but not yet. I'm hoping they open soon. I miss having a nice loaf of semolina bread and getting my fresh stuffed shells. Prices are good, but you have to pick out your fruits and veggies. Now, if you cook, you should know how to do this. It's why you get such great buys. If you just want to buy it and it's all perfect, go pay 3x the price elsewhere. The fruit section is good. They do have a few seasonal items, like Cardone, or Zucchini blossoms. But the best part is and you can get almost everything here year round. I go to this store weekly with my *disabled uncle* and have noticed the young girls working as cashiers have a very condescending energy. This is definitely not all of them but I"ll be blunt-- the young white girls carry themselves with a sense of entitlement. They have felt comfortable speaking to my uncle like he is less than smart and can't do simple things. Instead of just guiding him if he doesn't know where to place the card for "Tap to Pay" or helping pack the bags, he will be stared at as if these girls are 9 and have never seen a disabled person before. These girls make the overall experience of shopping here less than satisfying because the most "fresh" thing on my mind when leaving is the experience with the cashiers. I never have these condescending encounters with the *one black cashier* or the POC helping us check out which makes the girls I'm referring to stick out like a very, very sore thumb. I'm very particular when I go with him about which cashiers we choose based on their overall cadence. I wish I could say this only happened once but I'd be lying. I'm honestly sick of the gum-chewing, neck-rolling prima donnas. They need some sort of training for them on how to treat people who may seem 'different' as human beings. It's disgusting. Or they should have some sort of repercussions when the customers' experience has been unpleasant. This makes me question the managers and how they're choosing who works here. This has simply been my experience shopping here. For me, choosing a place to shop doesn't just have to do with their products, it has to do with the character of the employees. My hope is that if these girls ever have a disabled child of their own that this world doesn't treat them the way they've chosen to treat or look at my uncle. (On a lighter note, there is one cashier who works at one of the registers furthest from the front door, she has a loud voice that makes her stand out and always greets us with a smile. I've loved every encounter we've had with her. She's so helpful and has very humble energy about her. When I do return to Cross Island, I'll always look for her! Good fruit and produce. The name does not lie. They focus on the fruit. Go here for the produce and the specialty stores within the store. Not necessarily the best if you want to do normal grocery shopping. Also they hire a lot of young kids to work here and don't be afraid to interrupt their conversations if you need to check out. They're just social but not unwilling to help you out. Ambiance might be described as old school. I almost feel like the floors should still be covered with sawdust. Today is Sunday June 25th 2023 at 104 p.m. my mom and aunt Evelyn are fascinated with this particular Deli Fruit Stand in Malvern they only went here because my uncle used to own a salon in Malvern called hair razors and everyone knew him in the community and my uncle always bragged about the quality of the goods in this establishment this is not the first incident we've had with this place and the past my mother has purchased merchandise that they liquidate at the register at below wholesale pricing and your understanding that the merchandise is half rotten that they're selling it rather than just throwing it in the garbage should be a red flag right there which is pretty scary but other times upon purchasing roast beef cheese bread or pasta they were slight imperfections which were overlooked because to be quite honest the quality seems no different than most other delis grocery stores pricing was really or relatively the same that you would purchase at any local butcher even though the pasta section or the meat section are all departmentalized and this establishment doesn't recognize fault within each section considering that they're all privately owned to that individual running it so the deli takes no fault but having worked today and looking forward to my mom's amazing sauce to open up these beautiful ravioli to find that they are moldy and old was a severe smack in my face because now I'm aggravated and I drove my mom and my aunt crazy comma so crazy that they drove back to the store right now and let's not forget we're 35 miles from this place and with gas prices the way they are and it's over 100° outside today normal people wouldn't put up with this stupidity I would just call an attorney and sue their asses but my mother and my aunt are noble and kind people. I told them not to waste their time because people that run a business this way could really care less if they lose one Patron or another my family and I have run several businesses successfully for more than five decades and I'm a stickler when it comes to Quality Control I have fired hundreds of people and have been sued many times by disgruntled employees luckily for me everything in my business is are documented using video and I pride myself in the customer is always right and I know for a fact how people like to embellish the truth especially working with most women in my staff who have no idea the videos tell you everything especially the ones who are particularly friendlier with you that speak of praying for family members and sending holiday cards are the first ones to stick the knife in your back and twist it period I have a very good heart and my mother is a Downing and loyal wife friend sister and niece cousin and go out of her way for anyone I'm disgusted because instead of sitting down enjoying some Vino and my favorite ravioli in the world I'm going to have to throw a steak on the barbecue and make a veal and meatball sandwich for lunch tomorrow with leftovers if you find this review amusing I don't know whether I should be proud of it or not I personally would not want to read a review on any of my businesses such as I'm writing . I wasn't overly impressed when I walked in .. I was expecting more of a butcher shop in the back and it was just a fancy meat section! HOWEVER!! I went to the seafood section and purchased fried shrimp and a pound of shrimp cocktail.... I also purchased a marinated skirt and a pack of Chicken meatballs! Everything was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!! My favorite place to buy my groceries. Been shopping there for over 20 years. This is a seasonal fruit and vegetable market in the old world style. The prices and quality of the produce are excellent for in-season fruit. We can't expect to get the same quality of the same produce when it is out of season for anyone who posted a poor review. Since my children were little the great displayed produce helped them find new and interesting fruit and veggies to eat. Many times they see a new seasonal item and tried it. Cross Island is a great family run business by owner Joe who is always watching over the quality. The staff on the aisles recognizes customers and is always helpful. The butcher and seafood are top notch and beat any poor factory style meat from the big corporate chains. Shop local and support your community by sharing this great gem in Lynbrook. Alright, I think I've found my new favorite place. I moved to RVC from Manhattan with my family during the summer of covid. We love to cook and always had access to a wide variety of quality seafood and produce. But I was not able to find the equivalent at the grocery stores near me, especially in the meat and seafood departments. It was kinda sad. Today I reached out to an online group and asked where the locals go, and this was one recommendation that stood out. So I hopped over to Cross Island Fruit and was blown away by the produce selection, quality and prices. I went primarily for seafood (jumbo dry scallops) and ended up getting all my produce as well! The fish department was perfect. Fresh, high quality and great selection. I was served by the owner, his wife and kids, and was made to feel like family. Got what I wanted and paid. No problem. The store checkout, contrary to reviews, is great. Staff was super nice. Totally my new place for my main ingredients. Leaving the big grocery store for all the packaged snack brand stuff from now on. read more

The produce is fresh, but parking here can be stressful. There are fruits, vegetables, a fish section, meat section, bakery, and lottery area. The vegetables here are inconsistently fresh. I came here to buy food for a barbecue an ended up having to drive all the way to Best Market to finish my food shopping even though there were only 10 items on the list. The lighting isn't great. There are many giant bottles to make your own wine near the cash register area. The one really nice thing about this place is that there are a lot of plants outside in the spring time and I do see a lot of people buying them by the cart-full. Cross Island Fruit is definitely not clean compared to other local markets. If you're going to call yourself Cross Island Fruit, shouldn't there be an emphasis on REALLY amazing fresh fruit? Not only is there not a huge variety of fruits, but they aren't always fresh. Compared to Keyfood, Best Market, and Stop and Shop nearby, this isn't my go-to place for fruits. Even got very common household items like cereal, spices, yogurt, frozen sausages are all pricey. The service manner here can really improve. Patrons are not made to feel welcome here. The shopping carts outside are all over the place, blocking the entrance/exit area. The aisle to get out from the cashier area to the parking lot of really narrow. This place, mostly the parking makes me really anxious. +During Hurricane Sandy, when a lot of people moved out from Long Island or lived on generators, Cross Island Fruit remained open. So for that reason, I have to keep giving it business. *This place is CRAZY busy on Saturday mornings. read more

I simply can't say enough good about this place. We love the selection, the quality and the prices. Their produce quality is at the top. Better than your average grocer, and probably on par with premium shops - which are going to charge 2x the price. Speaking of prices, remember just a few years ago before inflation hit, what food bills were like? Walking out of Cross Island I am still amazed at how I can get a weeks worth of veggies for half what the local grocer would cost. The back half of the shop has more standard grocery items and they are, more or less, regular prices. But they have items you will not get in regular stores. They have a good number of items I thought were long gone, like Manhattan Special, an espresso/coffee flavored soda from back around 1900! And many other gems from the past, or other locals. Don't buy your Christmas trees there! After shopping in the rain, I returned my cart next to the corral. It may have blocked one small tree. The ignorant, rude young man working the xmas trees at 10:00 am, who was busy on his phone, proceeded to call me " a f**king moron" not thinking I heard him. I responded but of course did not stoop to his level. I live locally and will be advising people not to buy xmas trees from cross island. Have you ever heard of a lemon sweet pear? Neither did I until I made my now weekly trip to Cross Island. Cross Island has been a staple in my family for like a million years. Personally, I didn't really check it out until a few years ago. This store rocks. The fresh produce is inexpensive, plentiful, and different. I come here to stock up on my fruits and veggies. My newest discovery at Cross Island was the plout. It is a cross between an apricot and a plum. Duh! (It is more on the plum side but even more juicy and delicious.) They also have a slew of fresh herbs for sale along with a great seafood, meat and bakery departments. Cross Island is like a Farmer's Market but in a store! Best of both worlds. A few years back, Cross Island have a fire (when I first started shopping) and I was so upset. They built back though better than ever and are who they are today! The staff can be a little odd and the parking lot is always a mess but, it's so worth the trip. If you happen to live in the neighborhood you will most likely bump into someone you know. Cross Island is like the secret everyone knows about. I must say, it is a little pricy on the aisle items (bread, eggs, canned goods...) but that isn't their specialty. Kind of an extra...I never even go down the aisles... They also stock some interesting items that you can't find at your local foodstore (like the lemon sweet pear! Unfortunately the management has really soured me on this place. 7/12 - I normally don't have a negative thing to say about this place or the shops inside of this location. I honestly never give negative reviews. Today, a man wearing a confederate flag shirt was walking around casually shopping. I went to the manager to express how uncomfortable it made me feel. The cashier and other staff within earshot told me he's normally in the store every week and all he wears is confederate paraphernalia. The manager told me there's nothing he can do to help me since the other customer has freedom of speech. I attempted to educate him that freedom of speech was null when it's hate speech. The manager told me he can't make him take off the shirt. I attempted to explain that it's his responsibility to make customers and his employees to feel comfortable. The manager said, he'll try to talk to him. Either you will talk to him or you're not... The fact that customer shops here every week, with that on, means no one has done anything to prevent this from happening. 7/17 - I followed up at the request of the owner/manager - I'm not sure if they were the owner or the manager on duty. On our call the 'he' explained to me that he couldn't control what people wear in the store and the confederate flag meant a different thing in the past. When I asked him what he meant by his statement, he became enraged. He told me if I was uncomfortable shopping there I should not shop here and hung up on me. Cross Island Fruits is one of those stores you'd miss if it closed down or changed locations... well one fateful day in September of 2002, that's exactly what happened. As a result of a smoke fire, Cross Island Fruit was closed down. I guess it was a blessing in disguise because it not only showed me how much I'd missed that wonderful market, but also spurred some seriously needed renovations in Cross Island Fruit. I'm a frequent visitor at Cross Island Fruits and I'm a huge, huge fan of their fruits selection. They always have perfectly fresh and RIPE fruit! Tell me where you can find a fresh mango in the Malverne, Lynbrook, Valley Stream area?! Well, for me, it's CIF! The fruit is definitely something to brag about, but the seafood is GREAT. It's so fresh! I mean, I wouldn't skip a visit to Freeport, but it's tough getting out there on a weekly basis. When I want seafood, I just drive 3 minutes away from my house and get to choose from a wide selection of shellfish and fish. This place is a gem in my little squatty 1 sq. mile town. read more

I miss this place! I used to live in RVC and would go weekly. Early mornings were best time to shop. Forget weekends. I would get a full cart of fruits and vegetables and when I was told it was like $22 I asked is that all. The lady at the register, who always made me smile, said, "we'll take more if you want." She had a quick wit and it really made my day. Sorry to hear the cashiers are not as perfect now. Remember, the inventory is huge and unique. It's not easy to know each and every item that comes into the store, especially if it's seasonal and keeps changing. Give the cashiers a break. I take photos of my products with the prices at their shelf. It helps for quick checkout. Today I was thinking about the flowers they sell outside, the flats, the variety! The great prices.
