Advice to cashiers: 1) Smile - your life is NOT that horrible (think about what girls your age in Afghanistan have to deal with). 2) Say hello - it'll be good practice for when you meet new people in your personal and future professional lives. 3) Say thank you - You don't really have to mean it, it's just something we do here in America when we complete transactions. 4) Get your noses out of your phones - your social lives are NOT dependent on responding to every text, liking every Instagram post, or rewarding your friends with some lame lol emoji for whatever random comment they threw out there. 5) Make eye contact - unless, of course, you're dealing with an aggressive dog, in which case, don't; just calmly and slowly back up while gazing down and to the side. But for people, we kinda look at each other when we interact, even if in a limited sorta way. 6) Learn some freakin' real life social skills and put them to use the next time you ring me up.... hi, please, thank you, you're welcome!!!! Cross Island is a convenient place to shop for fruits and vegetables, as well as meat, cold cuts, and baked goods. The quality is generally quite good but the prices can be hit or miss. I find that for items such as ice cream, yogurt, cereal and the like, it's quite expensive. But I suppose those are there more as a convenience. So I would suggest getting those products from a supermarket. The prices for the fruits and vegetables, cold cuts, fresh bread, and meat are typically reasonable for what they're offering. It's a friendly atmosphere, the people are generally helpful, and it is a go to place for a variety of things. read more

I went on a Friday mid afternoon and had no trouble parking. Store appeared clean, well lit, organized, and staffed well. Got fresh fruit, and a few other items. I'll be back because they have fresh fish, meat, a deli and bakery. Didn't have much time. Enough check outs were open. Young girl on her phone with no one at checkout. Are the cashiers here the worst you've ever seen, or is there a place in this world where where they are just as bad? First, let me state that the food selection is good, as are the prices. You can get things here that you can't find in a regular supermarket, and it's greatly appreciated. But the cashiers are horrible. Whoever is responsible for hiring at Cross Island should get a new job- at a zoo! These girls know nothing about customer service. It's probably not their fault, I an only assume that they are not trained. They stand idle, looking at their phones like zombies, until a customer comes up, at which point they look like they are annoyed to have to work. They never greet anyone, they just start throwing things into bags, and then- maybe- they tell you the amount of your purchase. Otherwise, you're forced to look at the register screen to find out. After handing over your money, you get handed your change - no 'thank you' no 'have a nice day ', nothing at all. I suppose many of the cashiers start off with good manners- I'm sure many of them are from good families- but it seemingly takes no time at all for them to turn into the worst group of service workers I've ever seen. It has to be the culture of the store and its management that's responsible. Do they all hate their jobs? If so, go elsewhere, preferably someplace where customer contact is not a prerequisite. In my opinion, this place is just ok. I really go in there when I want to buy nuts. They have a great selection of pre-packaged nuts and snacks. I have to agree with a few previous posters about the cashiers. Most of them seem to have big attitudes for whatever reason. I was there Monday afternoon and some of the girls didn't have a face mask. the owner of the store needs to take more precautions and worry more about his/her employees is not fair that there are so many customers in at the same time its putting their health at a high risk not just the cashiers but also the customers meanwhile other supermarkets are taking better precautions. read more

Cross Island is a popular local grocery store that has a nice selection of fruits and vegetables. Prices here, especially for regular items like cereal and bread, are a bit high, so it's best to come here only for essentials. We usually come here once a month or so to pick up the basics. Like the name suggests, produce is king at Cross Island, and it far surpasses what you will find in an average supermarket. Other departments in the store, in my opinion, are lacking big time. The deli, fish, bakery, and meat departments all look equally unappetizing. The old expression is "If it looks good, eat it" and this is exactly why I keep on walking when I pass by these sections of Cross Island. As I said before, Cross Island knows how to do produce. You will constantly see stock people replenishing the department with fresh veggies and fruits. Some of the items are basic, but they often have something that I've never heard of that looks really interesting. Parking here is atrocious. For produce and meat, Cross Island beats most supermarkets in the area. It's a convenient one-stop shop. The prices on specialty foods like Italian treats and nuts can be a little high. The bakery offerings are unimpressive (not thrilled by the hygiene either), but also contained in the store are a fish monger, newsagent, delicatessen, and butcher. The deli has a good selection of olives, fresh cheeses and other antipasti. The butchery quality is very good and the guys are friendly. Their thin chicken cutlets are actually sliced thinly (hard to find elsewhere). You have to pay separately at each department, like you would at a marketplace with stalls. The only thing is that I wish the quality of the produce - which is, after all, the main reason to shop there - were more reliable. More often than not everything is beautifully crisp, ripe, fresh and the shelves are full; other days it's all a bit dull. So you can get, say, asparagus or oranges or apples that taste great one day, then not be able to recreate that magic until two or three trips later. Snatch up more than you think you'll need when it's fresh. Still, even on a bad day, it's passable and the variety is good. It gets very crowded and the customers can get pushy. The parking lot is kind of a disaster, so beware the crazy drivers and runaway carts. read more

I've never been to this store before until yesterday. I heard they have really good meat. I decided to stop by in the morning. I walked around and found the butcher. I grabbed 2 steaks and a pack of chicken. There is a cashier in the butcher section. Being that I never have been here before, I wasn't sure where to pay for my groceries. I was waiting online but I saw the other people waiting online also had other groceries in their carts so I figured I would shop around and pay for everything there. I took the meat and walked over to the fish counter. The woman with a British accent told me I had to pay for the meat in the meat section. I replied ok, that is fine. Is it possible for me to get the fish so I don't have to come back and then I will pay for the meat? She walked away then came back. She proceeded to tell me I was making her uncomfortable and that I should go pay for the meat right away and then come back before I get in trouble. Excuse me? I'm making you uncomfortable? Basically this woman was insinuating I was trying to steal. I looked at her, walked away, paid for the meat and left. I went to a local fish market where I spent $30 on fish that I could have spent at this location if this incident has not occurred. I didn't know that there were separate vendors in this store I literally thought it was a regular supermarket. I didn't think it made sense to keep charging my card over and over instead of paying for everything together which I saw other people doing. I think convenience is what drew me here in the first place. However, I do choose Cross Island for my fruits and vegetables over any other supermarket near by. There is a large variety and most of the time the fruits and vegetables are in perfect condition. I'm not too fond of the parking lot, but it's in the neighborhood and a quick walk is all it takes. read more

Wow, this may be my first & last time patronizing CIF. Gail, whose name is on my receipt was BEYOND RUDE! I purchased a 5-lb bag of potatoes, and when I walked up, I said hello... No response! She asked the next cashier if they were still $1.99, and she said yes. She punched in $1.99, still hasn't acknowledged me at all. I gave her a $10 bill, which was snatched out of my hand. I'm standing there with a look of dismay, at this point. She got the $8.01 in change and slammed it in my hand, put the potatoes in a bag and turned her back on me. Was just alright. Most likely I won't be coming back here. The fruit looked pretty old to be honest. I did buy a few items like grapes and blackberries. The blackberries were fine, the grapes mostly soft and aged. Rockville Centre has a great Farmers Market with great fruit on Sunrise. read more

I always liked this place until the altercation today at the Good n Tender meat department. On Sunday, my wife bought some meat from them and froze it. When she defrosted it she realized that one of the packages of chicken were expired on the day before the purchase. Couldn't find the receipt but I went to return it for an exchange, they gave me a hard time. The manger wasn't there but the cashier was speaking to them on the phone. I had my bank statement on my phone but that wasn't good enough. All I wanted was an exchange be she said come back tomorrow with the receipt by 430 pm. Who has time for that especially that most people are at work at that time. I have picture proof and bank statements to prove all this. This place is known for it's quality meats but I won't be shopping in that meat department anymore. It's a shame because my family and I just moved to the neighborhood. This manager just lost a lifelong customer over around 8 bucks worth of chicken. read more

One of my favorite stores to get fresh fruits and vegetables. The prices are always slightly lower that most supermarkets but the produce is so much better! There are a few other vendors in the store including a fish stand, bakery and meat department with a great selection. The Lynbrook location seems to have more of a selection than the New Hyde Park location or maybe it's the vibe of the Lynbrook store...you could spend a lot of time there and customers are always sharing how they cook things. I even learned how to make wine from a customer that saw my puzzled expression while looking at a wine vat.The welcome friendly atmosphere, decent prices and quality keep me coming back! read more

I've been going to Cross Island Fruits since before I can remember. It's a comfortable local place that also has everything you really need. The prices aren't the absolute lowest in the area but the prices are good and the quality of the food is very good. This grocery store is by far the most convenient as well. It's become even better since it had to remodel due to the fire a few years back. Also, you can get some of the best fresh mozzarella cheese there. Closes thing we have in the winter to a farmers market. I like that you can buy as much or little produce that you want. The pricing is fair but check everything for expiration dates before buying. Went into cross island fruit on a Friday night, 15 minutes before the store was supposed to close at 9pm. I wanted to grab something fast from the deli and was told at 845, "we are closed, I've already closed out my register!" I shop at Cross Island regularly because I love the butcher. Today, after a big shopping haul, I returned home to find the mascarpone I purchased was full of MOLD. This is the second time this has happened to me at Cross Island (the first time it happened I almost fed mozzarella to my daughter before realizing it was black in the center). I called and spoke to a manager and suggested they talk to the person who stocks the dairy and the manager SCREAMED AT ME. He told me he doesn't sell moldy food and then he hung up on me! When I called back to ask for his name, he pretended that it hadn't been him on the phone. His behavior is a serious testament to the type of customer service they offer. They should sack him ASAP and figure out what's going on in their dairy department. read more

Expensive and produce is far from fresh. Iceberg lettuce is the worst, almost never edible. Bought three avocados last week at $.99 a piece, came home and two of them were rotten. Brought them back a couple of days later and the price were now $1.99 a piece. A grumpy man in the office were I was directed to go for my return, informed I could trade it in for only one fresh, edible avocado as the price had went up. My weekly stop for fresh varied produce at very reasonably priced. My favorite section is the area with the fresh packages of nuts, dried fruit, candy lots of different selections of snacks. I love the creme brûlée mix of butterscotch and chocolate chips with cashews and candy coated peanuts, yum! The meat department is excellent best stuffed pork roast. They are always very helpful here and will answer any questions about the meat you have. Deli and bakery good too but Italian bread overpriced. They also have a fish dept. I rally use due to family allergies. And a card shop too with lotto. It's a one stop that also has the best planting for summer at cheap prices. The negative is the parking lot you take your life in your hands paring there. I also find it annoying that each department is paid separately I always end up leaving something behind. read more

In response to another yelper, BigBob's, review I would like to say, First of all, the amount of grammatical errors in his review is quite concerning, but from someone who refers to himself as "BigBob," I am not surprised. I have been a costumer here for many years and never had a problem with any cashiers. They always greet me nicely, as I do them, and say "have a nice day," when I leave. Maybe he happened to get someone having a bad day, which is understandable, but to generalize the whole staff of cashiers as, "horrible" and "the worst group of service workers," seems a bit harsh and unfair, don't you think? I am sure there have been times where they may not have greeted me or seemed annoyed, but it didn't enrage me and drive me to write a nasty yelp review. They are young girls, mostly high school students, that have lives outside of that grocery store. You don't know what they are going through at home or in school. I have 2 daughters and when they were teenagers they had days where they weren't the nicest, but that is expected from teens. Overall, I would just like to say that his review is a bit exaggerated and the cashiers a Cross Island are wonderful, polite, kind girls who surely don't deserve a hateful, angry attitude. If you don't like the customer service there, then shop elsewhere. I can assure you, "BigBob," they will do just fine without your nasty attitude and "BIG" ego. You know, i live 10-15 houses from this place and i hardly ever go there. Its pricey, i mean, $7 for a deli meat that anywhere else cost literally half. I dont like the fact that for cross island itself, the deli, meat, bakery, seafood all have to pay seperately. Its a real pain if you ask me. CIF is a really nice "farmer's market" kind of supermarket--great fruits and vegetables, as well as deli and fish "store." It's always well stocked, plenty of brands, a lot of the less-usual gourmet items, and even has a kind of convenience store concession within the store--very handy (but be warned, they only take cash, no cards in the concession.) Like the other yelpers pointed out, the typical drawbacks are the lack of parking, the narrow aisles, and I'll add one--go there in the evening when the teenagers are working, and you are absolutely invisible to them while they chat to the friends they have hanging around. But aside from that, it's a well stocked store worth the parking issues (evening is much better) and the inattentive help. read more
