Stopped by for a few items on the way home to Melville from another errand in Plainview. Was double charged for a bag of grapes, noticed when I got home. This is what management suggests we do... My mother in law is a big fan and loves to buy the seafood salad from here, particularly because I love seafood so much. She bought me seafood salad which was packaged on 6/15/25 and gave it to me that day. I decided to open it today. As I am eating it, I was wondering if your store started utilizing mint in it now since it had a bit of a minty flavor. I grabbed another forkful, and to my horror, disovered that in the next few bites, there was a soft, CHEWED PIECE OF GUM in my mouth from the seafood salad, extremely minty and definitely the reason the rest of it was minty. I am disgusted, horrified and feel extremely violated. Not only is this completely unacceptable and unsanitary, but it is an extreme breach of food safety and health safety. Due to poor food handling and negligence, I have to worry about whether or not there is a chance of contracting something because I had an employee's chewed up piece of gum in my mouth and all the psychological distress that comes along with this violation. Old standby in Plainview for reasonable priced veggies fruits and meats. Need to be sharp eyed to avoid the suspect produce and fruits especially when lower priced. Meat section is well stocked, only place I know where they package 3 meat ground for Italian meatballs (beef, veal, pork) along with all kinds of beef pork chicken and other proteins. Their sliced meat deli counter is also great. Tons a customers and lots of choices including those home made selections. For the past 10 years, on and off, I have shopped here. They definitely get in lots of fresh fish and the butcher is great about cutting the meat custom. They provide advice when asked and seek to make every customer happy. In the past 3 weeks I have had some bad experiences. I had purchased whole snapper to be cleaned inside and out, head and tail left on. I paid $42 for this fish. When I went to use it the next day, they had left the scales and fins on the fish. Not having proper tools, I attempted to remove both..the scales took way longer to come off and the fins pierced and cut my fingers pretty bad. So now, I am purchasing already clean fish (keep it simple). I bought filet mignon the day before yesterday and after cooking it today, realized they did a bait and switch. This was definitely sirloin steak, not filet mignon. As I have purchased filet mignon from them for years, I could tell the difference immediately. You will see too many cars and wonder if you should drive into the busy parking lot. Everyone being patient as parking spots open up within a minute or so. But not often an empty one. Lol! Inside what was once a small fresh produce / fish market / deli has evolved most recently to having hot food right up front and also some super delicious bread in from Brooklyn, They also have bakery in from Francesco's so cookies, cake all there at the front to grab and go. The deli and seafood counters, you take a number, Saturday afternoons are the busiest so pick a mid week, or go early or late if time is key. Otherwise, just enjoy the best selection of seafood, deli that is always Long Island's freshest. Super values on grapes, tomatoes, berries, and all produce. Fruit is often ready to eat the same week. So don't let it sit. Imported Italian Cheese (sharp provolone) Deli (soppressata), Panettone, even Italian chocolate, candy, cookies at Christmas and Easter are here. Bluefish, Mussels, Clams, Scallops sea and bay sized, etc. They have flounder rolled with seafood stuffing you can just cover and bake easily. My mother gets her spring plants here every new season. October 8, just past noon. I take my Mother to do some well needed grocery shopping. Its been a while since we've been to this location because we live a bit far away. But my Mother loves...loved this place because of the prices and seafood and meat selection. Today we go in, and it was busy! Business is good from the looks of it outside. Able to find all the produce we wanted at a pretty good price. Spent about 40mins or so shopping around and mentally taking notes of the things we need to come back for before the holiday season comes around. Store was crowded and we managed to maneuver ourself to the checkout line. We wait in line to cash out, bought a good amount of things too! Excited to have everything we need, pay and be on our way. This is when it became...interesting. We noticed a piece of paper, just a bit bigger than a business card that say "cash and debt card payment only". Mom and I, we both simply thought... maybe its just this cashier thats not taking credit card. We usually pay with credit card for most things these days so we can get points from our bank. (I believe most people would use credit card when possible to just get reward points anyway.) So we find out...AFTER SHOPPING.... no credit card payments! My frustration: THE FRONT DOOR DOES NOT HAVE A SIGN THAT SAY NO CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS! I understand business but this was almost a complete waste of time shopping in a crowded store to then only be told we dont except credit card payment. If we seen a sign at the opening door or anywhere in the front that said no credit card payment, or anything along those lines, we won't have wasted valuable time shopping around in the store. All this to only be told you cant help us if we dont pay with cash or debt card. Like my money is not good enough here. Bottom line: we spent a decent about of money to buy groceries. I cant imagine EVERYONE who goes to this store pays with cash or debt card only. I feel as if my Mother and I were singled out and maybe profiled. It was like our money was no good at their establishment. It made my Mother confused, embarrassed and sad. This made me upset because there was no signage at the beginning of the store that explained or simply states payment options! The whole experience was rude and off putting. I dont want to name drop, but Im sure its the same lady that tells everyone "10% off dont tell nobody". Shes off putting and just not helpful. And a fast-talker, boarder-line liar. She continued to tell me theres a sign that say no credit card at the front of the store. But when I showed her, she just simply didnt care and really didnt want to take my money. I even offered to pay more for the creditcard charge and still no help. We were literally denied groceries because we didnt have cash in our hand. Everything felt wrong about this experience, specially being absolutely different than everyone else shopping here. End Result: Run home, 30mins away just to get my debt card OR call a loved one to help me out. Time wasted vs still spending more time to now figure out a payment option. Store is lovely, the hard working stockers on the floor are so helpful and smile with great energy. I even heard one the guys in the meat section help a lady pick meat and told her how she can cook it! The front of the store is a different story, cashiers look unhappy and abused. While the people with the "key" walk around with their chin up high. Honestly, I dont think its worth shopping here if the leadership is rude to customers and cashiers. Walking on the edge of profiling and what feels like picking and choosing who money is acceptable or not. Cheap prices, but such an unavoidable embarrassing moment on this day. I still feel sick to my stomach, I can only imagine what if my Mom was alone and had to be turned away cause her money is no good there. Sad. Not exactly 100% satisfied. With rock bottom prices for sale items, John's Farms scores high marks. The quality of the fresh foods at all counters is excellent. Fruits and vegetables are also fresh. This market has a mix of both standard foods found in us markets as well as Latin American products. Aisles are small. Shopping carts require a quarter for use and must be returned to retrieve the quarter. The store shows its age. Non sale item prices are fair/competitive. When I grabbed for the flyer that most all grocery stores leave close to the front, I did not expect to see the March edition (Or any edition for that matter) of GIA: Giornale Italo Americano. The periodicle is a well distributed political and business paper that is available from Long Island to Florida, but in sporadic states along the way. It just struck me as excitingly odd, in that John may very well be Italian and Italians know their food. Beautiful produce section, staffed by three employees working on restock, cleaning, stacking and inspecting. A quite busy deli department sitting just past the produce against he far wall. In the reach in bins, separating you and the area employee's sat some manicotti, looking very homemade and ready to be brought home, furthering my suspicions. All of the meat from chicken parts to in-house sausages , many having some delectable stuffing options, to the larger cuts of beef and pork the prices and freshness was better than I could have anticipated. I caught myself stacking my hand basket way beyond its intended purpose. So, I reeled in my thinking to reassess this days shopping day at John's. The meat section would have to wait, barring some sausage. The fish behind the glass were intense with color and freshness as if freshly plucked from the ocean. The options were limitless with Tilefish, Porgy, Whiting, Hailbut, Monkfish, Sole, Snapper, Skate and so much more all for under $10.00 a pound with one exception, the Wild King Slamon Fillet's will run you $12.00 per pound. I went with a couple dozen top neck clams at $4.00 a dozen and a few fresh Maine Lobsters which ran $10.00 a pound. I eat fruits and vegetables to enjoy good health and there are plenty of them at this establishment, in decent quality. Unfortunately, they use gas powered leaf blowers in the parking lot and I am not going to subject myself to that danger if I don't have to. It is so bad that inside the store itself smelled of benzene and they were right at the front door blasting toxic microparticles through the door. Not a restaurant, but a grocery store in Plainview! I used to hate coming to John's farms because of how packed it would get, and how unorganized it felt. It is much smaller than your average Shoprite or Stop and Shop. With that being said, the prices here are EXTREMELY reasonable. I like to get flank steak in particular, which is $6.99/lb and normally sell about 2lbs in a pack. They've got several different types of steaks, and other cuts of meat as well as a great seafood section, + deli. I also buy their salmon filet for a quick dinner. Their cheese section is amazing and extremely reasonable as well. I'm finally finishing a block of asiago and now bought a spicy one which I cannot wait to eat. They're always getting new things whether its little gourmet snacks or specialities, or even vegetables. If you're willing to deal with a crowded supermarket for a good price, I would definitely recommend coming here. Debit card and cash only. read more

Some changes etc. Good pricing on many things, but sometimes items maybe not so "fresh" relatively speaking you have to pay attention to what you're getting here. Just shopped at Johns Farms 601 old country road NY.......slick.....they color their pork ground meat to make it look fresh. Squeeze the meat brings out the coloring. It became apparent when we opened it and broke the ground pork in half. Pork meat is never that red, ridiculous! it also showed older brownish meat in the middle. So basically my wife and I went from raving lunatics over Johns Farms to " SEE YA "......in two seconds. Now johns will probably scramble their meat off the shelve and assure you that meat juice got mixed in or our story is sparse. But hey folks it's up to you where you want to buy you ur meats from ? Have shopped here on and off for the past 10 years. They have evolved to a store I have traveled over 30 minutes to get to. Their meats (steaks, lamb, chicken) is rightly priced and never a disappointment. I have asked the butcher (even on a very busy Saturday-the craziest day there) for specific steaks with the right amount of marbeling and have received or honestly been told why they don't have what I'm looking for. Today I was looking for a Veal chop and told that they don't have them. Other butcher's have tried to sell me whatever they have on the floor. If John's Farms has it, and it's not on the floor, they will get it for me and cut it the way I like it. The fish market is fast moving and I have eaten their Scallops, Lemon Sole, Salmon, Shrimp, Snapper, and much more and it's always been fresh. The deli has delicious prepared foods, store made cold cuts as well as boar's head, amazing cheeses and a great bakery. I go here specifically for produce; where else can you get fresh (not boxed) Arugula, fresh Culantro, and all produce equal to or better than anywhere else. This is a win-win and a trip for me every week, but totally worth it! read more

Constantly rotten meat DO NOT SHOP THERE ANYMORE!!! My boyfriend bought flank steaks today and as soon as he opened them they smelled rancid. We went back with our receipt and the lady at customer service said she'll give him his money back or he can go pick out new ones. He said he wanted to open the new ones at the store and make sure they were good there before going back home with more rotten meat and she let him. He smelled them and they seemed to be ok at the store. Well, when we got back home the new ones smelled too!! So we went back again and she gave us his money back. He also asked if he could get the money back for the shrimp he bought because he doesn't trust it and he was going to throw them away when he got home anyway and she said "no the shrimp is good nobody ever comes back with the shrimp." That's how you treat customers that had to come back twice with your rotten meat??? She then said to go pick out a different cut of meat and she will discount it, so he picked a skirt steak and her "discount" was 10% ($2.00 off) INSANE that that's how they treat customers who had to come in three times. He said never mind and we left. I hope that they actually took them all off the shelf like they said they were going to and that no one else bought them! On top of this, back in February we had a similar problem when they sold him rotten meat. We just came home shopping from this place for around $100. When my husband opened the shrimp packet to clean it. It smelled horrible. Then we figured out it has gone bad. My grandmother used to sing the praises of this store. I hate it. Parking is a nightmare. Shopping carts can only be obtained with a quarter to unlock the carts. Produce is always borderline- might be good, might be terrible. Take your chances. It's always crowded and I have seen more people stealing fruit/veggies in this place than any other market ever. Literally, old men lining their pockets with apples and almonds and stuff. The fish counter smells horrible. Years ago, we used to buy decent fish there but some bad experiences stopped that and the counter only smells worse and worse every time you go in the store. No credit cards- only cash or check, which with long lines already, all you need is six women in front of you pulling out their checkbooks. Don't bother coming here- I've totally given up. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with John's Farms. I love it for their cheap but fresh produce and fish selection. They have every fruit/vegetable imaginable at an unbeatable price. Their tuna steaks are amazing too. I hate it for their crowds and lack of credit card acceptance (although recently they did start accept debit cards...which is a start). You also need to give up a quarter to get a shopping cart. However, you can get it back once you place it in the cart receptacle. If you're lazy, you're out of luck. The really nice thing about John's Farms is it has a very large selection of Really fresh Fruit and Vegetables at very very reasonable prices. The store was mobbed as usual for a weekend, But check out did not take that long. The parking lot is properly there biggest problem its too small for the amount of traffic they get. Best bet is to go during the week when they are not as crowded. It is definitely worth a trip here to check out the fruits and vegetables. Yeah yeah - bring a quarter for the shopping cart - you get it back when you return it. There were also some loose carts available today. Also, they now take debit cards, so no need to bring cash or check unless that's your thing! Go early or go late, minimizing the chance that you will or someone will get punched for being in the way or taking the last unblemished artichoke.
