Best greengrocer in London? I am not really well placed to judge but Tony Booth's outlet has the…read moremost amazing array of produce I have ever seen. The fact that I will (semi) willingly trek across from Highbury to shop here says it all. The hoard of mushrooms of all varieties that greets customers at the front of the shop makes me immediately think about wild mushroom risottos and tarts (irrespective of the reason I am here). They are displayed with justifiable pride - this is the only place where I know ceps and morels (and all their mushroom friends) are guaranteed to be available to buy when in season. It is not just about the mushrooms though - all the other vegetable and fruit goodies you would expect from a greengrocer are here as well as a few things that one wouldn't (I spied some preserved lemons here yesterday). Put this together with staff who are friendly and knowledgeable and you have a winner - fantastic!

Booth's used to be at Borough Market. It was a Borough Market institution…read more But with the diaspora of market vendors either kicked out of Borough for selling elsewhere or tired of paying for the ever-increasing Borough rent, Booths moved on over to the new Maltby Street Market. This works for me. Because now I can find my fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables for the week along with select pantry items amongst other locals who are perusing the goods because they actually want to buy them and cook them rather than gawk at them with their enormous DSLRs (and just generally get in my way). Booths is always buzzing with activity on Saturday mornings, and you will undoubtedly see one or two restaurant vans outside picking up their produce, a testament to Booth's quality and to the fact that the model of picking up and moving to a truly local market works. Who needs Borough when there's Maltby Street?

Does anyone still need convincing on the subject of Bethnal Green's gentrification? Nestled…read morecomfortably along Roman Road towards the West Bow side is Simply Fresh, Tower Hamlet's answer to Stokey's Whole Foods. Here you can get some locally sourced organic beets and radishes for your juice fast... I mean strict vegan, gluten free diet. Buy some leafy kale, get a box of alfalfa sprouts and a bottle of hemp milk. There's even a fill your own bottle of white or red, provided by Borough Wines. No need to get confused over which bus to take to get to London Bridge. Hear hear. No really, I'm so glad Simply Fresh have stepped in and filled the gaping manhole that is the lack of a convenient shop which caters to the conscientious fair trader around these parts. Would you believe it, even Vicky Park Village is missing one! Sure the shops along Roman Road in West Bow have adjusted their stock in accordance to the area's new somewhat upwardly mobile crowd but those shops don't stock Borough Wines or have a deli counter with The Olive Company's products, do they? More importantly those shops don't stock kombucha and don't know what kombucha is. Excellently stocked for such a small place, you can get your hands on oyster mushrooms, shiitake, seasonal fruits and vegetables, tofu, dairy alternatives, freshly baked bread, free from snacks, loads of local brews as well as a huge selection of wines for regular people and for Borough Market people. This place is where it's at! Looks a bit out of place at the moment but I don't see it ever being empty and staff are lovely!

Shop "advertised" as organic, focused on good greens and vegetables. The reality is that the…read moreorganic section is tiny and provenance of all fresh products is mystereus. Only prepacked food reports the producing country. And garlic comes from CHINA. Now, you can grow garlic almost anywhere, and it's an extremely cheap product, there is no excuse to import it from so far. This is not a serious organic shop, it's just trying to fill a gab in the market. Get your labels right and allow the consumer to really choose what to buy! (And of course I'll change my review)
