This is a smaller grocery store that is clean and well-organized. I thought the prices were pretty good and was planning to stop back to shop on my way out of town, as the prices were less than I was used to, and I wanted those deals. This store carried items I hadn't seen before. But as it is smaller, the brands they carry are fewer than I am accustomed to, with a lot of the products. And other products had more selection than I could imagine, so maybe they order just what those who shop there want. I wanted to try the breakfast in the restaurant inside the store, too, as I really enjoyed my burger and fries. It will be my first stop in Beaufort on my next visit.

The building was once Owen's Grocery store and is now a casual restaurant. They serve sandwiches and salads for lunch, but the dinner menu is closer to fine dining. I highly recommend making reservations if you are going for dinner, as it is a very popular place, even in the off-season. Reservations are not taken for the Sunday brunch, so I made sure to get there early to be first in line. On my recent visits, the restaurant was decorated for the holidays, so that was fun. It is small inside, but in warmer weather, there are outside tables. Alex took care of me at dinner. He was very welcoming, friendly, and could answer all my questions. He was very attentive and made sure my iced tea was always full. I went with the special for the night. I ordered the ribeye special without realizing it was 20 ounces. Thankfully, my appetite was good that night. It came with brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes. I did get dessert too, and that was a chocolate peanut butter pie. That took me two days to finish. At brunch, my waitress was friendly and went over all the specials. I had a green apple mocktail, the #18 poached and stacked. I did the mini sweet potato biscuits as well so it was a lot of food. Alex, from dinner, saw me and asked me about my trip, so it was nice to see him again, and I thought it was nice that he remembered my plans. There are also a lot of treats and candy that reminded me of a Pier 1 or World Trade Market. And you can find some European brands of things you just can't find in regular stores. I see Lidl as someplace to go occasionally since they are out of the way for us but if we lived closer we would shop more regularly. Ok last thing, lots of people compare this to ALDI. I don't they really are different, the bakery is far better than anything at ALDI, they also sell lower end oddities like a Dollar store, and many German or EU food products. They do carry some of the low-end brands that ALDI sells and for both stores that's part of their value. Some folks are ok to have 3rd rate quality to save a little money. For us we are selective and I don't mind hitting several grocery stores to get the best that each offers.

Making my way through my quest to visit every County Courthouse in North Carolina (there are 100),…read moreI was pleasantly surprised to encounter the Olde Beaufort Farmers' Market this morning. Dozens of tents and vendors along the walkways and under the trees next to the Carteret County Courthouse. Fresh vegetables and fruits, fresh fish on ice, coffee, artisan breads and pastries, arts and crafts including pottery and paintings and candles and jewelry. Even the county's bookmobile was here like a roving little free library. Live music and community organizations. I enjoyed a coffee and wandered.
