Even though I'm a south sider, I don't really visit this area very often so I don't know what it replaced but it's a lovely, cosy space - couches, tables, lots of space and very bright inside. I was warmly welcomed and shown the menu and told what was available today. I was there in the afternoon which meant they'd sold out of quite a bit of stuff - but that shows they're popular and making stuff fresh, which is great! I ended up ordering the full breakfast (£4.95) and asked for the black pudding and beans to be left off. It didn't take long (even though it was freshly cooked) and was a generous plate of food. I loved the roasted tomatoes, bacon and sausage which were all lovely. I don't really like scrambled egg but overall it was a tasty breakfast which was just the afternoon perk I needed. I stayed for a while doing some work and they kindly offered me their wifi code which was nice. The owners are really lovely folk who really want to make their customers comfortable and well looked after which I appreciated. As the name says, there is a huge range of cakes too but I didn't try any on this visit. I'll be back soon though as I want to try their soup!

My chicken salad sandwich on thick wholemeal contained proper roast chicken. The accompanying side salad had a balsamic dressing and included ribbons of carrot along with the usual ingredients. I usually view coleslaw in cafes with suspicion as they are often sour and vinegary and come straight out of a catering pack. This coleslaw was made on the premises tasting of fresh veg and creamy mayonnaise. Regulars popped in and out, on first name terms with the soup man and cake lady confirming this wee cafe's role in the community. Oh and the coffee was great as well.

I had a green tea later which was served in a tall glass. My bill came to around £10 for the salad, a tea and a coke which I thought was good value, especially as I ended up sitting in here for a few hours. I would have stayed longer but they close at 5pm on a Friday and Saturday to re-open at 6.30 for evening service. I can't wait to go back to try the all day breakfast, especially after reading the reviews on here.

I went with my second choice which was the pastrami, Emmental & gherkin which is served on foccacia. It was made fresh while I waited and everything was prepared for my order - the pastrami and Emmental sliced then and there, which was nice to see. It was all wrapped up in greaseproof paper and came to £4.50 which is a little more than I'd normally like to pay for a sandwich. That being said, it was lovely and everything was perfectly constructed and portioned. There is seating inside the deli as well, so you can get your sandwich (or pasta) to have in, which I think I'll try next time.

It's old school and every corner of this deli is an Italian grocery discovery. But for now it was immediate consumption we were after. There were two soups on offer, both veg brothy (£3.50) but being cold outside that was ok and there're plenty of sandwiches (£4.50-£5.50) to choose from, but no soup and sandwich deal :-/ There's a feel of community here and we happened to stumble upon the "largest panettone in Scotland" raffle. All good fun and I can see why the warmth of service draws regulars back for their Sunday morning cappuccino. Just be aware though, when you order a ham and cheese sandwich (and there are many varieties of ham and cheese here), that's exactly what you get - Bread, ham, cheese.
