Just got a tattoo from Mike. Really great work, turned out exactly as the picture I brought in. The fine lines are perfect! The staff was very helpful when I came in for the consultation as well. I had previously went to rising dragon in Manhattan to discuss a cover up tattoo and was treated with a complete lack of respect. I then decided on flyrite from all the positive reviews here on yelp. I am not very experienced at getting tattoos, and felt very comfortable at flyrite. I also am prone to anxiety attacks, but didn't experience any sort of anxiety during my tattoo. So I'd say flyrite is great for beginners as well as more experienced clients. I will recommend them to anyone and look forward to my next piece! read more

I went in inquiring about getting some text tattoos, and they were extremely helpful and efficient. I put down a deposit and booked my appointment in a matter of a couple minutes. Mike worked in such an efficient, professional manner, but he is also really nice to chat with, making the entire process really smooth. He even brings his adorable dog in the shop, who just sits on a chair hanging out. It's a really nice environment. After reading several good reviews I finally chose Fly Rite. The shop it self is very nice and the staff was very friendly. I wanted the numbers 1941 on my wrist. It is only about 1/2 in highs and an inch and a half long. I thought to myself how much could this possibly cost. The artist explained to me that there is a $100 minimum. I was shocked. I decided since I was already there I would get it done but I would advise anyone that is just getting a small tattoo to look around. read more

I had Jeb work on me and I couldn't be happier! I came to him with a pretty complex concept and he blew it out of the water! The piece ended up being larger than I originally intended but when he held up the stencil and I saw how perfect the design was (and he offered a lower rate if I was willing to trust his call on the size) I went for it! Jeb worked with me on timing, design and gave honest professional advise on healing and realistic timelines. The tattoo, we agreed is the most colorful tattoo possible as it includes the original pride colors in the wings and tail of a beautiful Japanese Phoenix. ok, so i haven't GOTTEN my tattoo here yet, but already it has been a great experience. my friend and i busted in, kamikaze style, with no warning, very much on purpose. we figured it would be a good way of getting the real-deal-feel. we wanted to see if anyone would help us, and if the tattoo artist we were interested would pop out to say hello. (this will be my first and only tattoo, so i am obviously being really picky and making a huge deal of this decision.) the guy at the desk was pretty nice, he gave us some books to look at, told us to look around, and alerted the artist (stephen huey) that we were there to check him out. stephen came out and met with us for a few minutes - he was super nice and really helpful. he answered all my questions and made some suggestions about my design. i made my appointment for later this month and laid down a deposit! i am feeling really comfortable with this place and with stephen. all the work i saw looked excellent, the place was clean and organized, and i got a really good vibe. i will probably update this review to 5 stars (and add more info) once my tattoo is complete! wish me luck! My tattoo looks great but wow they are not friendly at all. I actually feel like the way they treated me was horrendous. I went in Tuesday to make an appointment and showed them a picture of the owl I wanted, when I went in Wednesday the artist drew me up something super masculine that looked nothing like I wanted. When I emailed them the image I wanted they started making fun of me and basically fucking with me. I told the artist that I wanted a simpler version of the owl and I feel like he just didn't listen to what I wanted it took about 45 mins for him to draw it the way I wanted. When he finished the drawing everyone was saying he was such a good guy and so zen making it seem like I was a monster client when I was actually super pleasant and he just wanted to draw it the way he wanted. After I got the tattoo I was super happy even tho I had an odd experience and I showed a friend so we actually went in later that night do she could make an appointment and one of the tattoo artists got upset that we were talking because he wanted to listen to talk radio. One of the least intimidating places to get yourself tattooed up. The guys here are all sweet and down-to-earth and, most of all, talented at what they do, from flash to custom work. Rates are cheaper than most Manhattan tattoo shops, and it's right off the second stop in Brooklyn on the L train. And if you go there often enough, and are a moderately cool person, they'll probably give you a frequent flyer discount of some sort. Overheard conversation while you're getting tattooed is entertaining enough that you may temporarily forget that you're getting ink injected into your body. read more

I got a custom piece on my leg done by Nick Caruso and i couldn't be happier. I brought in a horrible and very amateurish sketch which he cleaned up and evened out. The work was done in less than an hour and was virtually pain free (It was my first tattoo). It's a very clean place with friendly people and the price was more than reasonable. It's healing up and looks better than i thought it would. My next piece will definitely be done by Nick at Fly Rite. read more

I absolutely loved this place. I got my first tattoo on Saturday from Mike Lucena, who was really friendly, funny and gave a new definition to the word "cool." I got an outline of a saxophone player on my arm. Mike was patient in working with me on the design, guiding me through the process, and the results exceeded my expectations. It's located off the Lorimer stop in Williamsburg- I don't hang out here that often, as I live in Sunnyside, but I will definitely come back here for my second inking. I went in the day before for a consultation and spoke to Clementine, the sweetest girl on the planet, about my design. We scheduled an appt for the following day. I came in and the whole process took about 45 min. The backroom reminded me of a pleasant and spotless morgue. Nothing morbid about it. and, ironically, they're playing swing music from the 1930s and 40s, the owners whistling and humming to each tune. These guys (and gals) know what they're doing and have the balls to back it up. I would recommend to anyone. read more

I love this tattoo shop! I called ahead and they were so polite. They explained that appointments can't be done over the phone, you need to come in, but If the piece is fairly simple or small, there is at least one artist doing walk ins every day, and to get there when they open at 2. I did, but I was beat to the punch by a couple other people, and I was given an appointment to come back later that night. They were not judgmental at all. I do not look like a tattoo kind of girl and I hate shops with attitude. This is not one of those shops. They were very nice, and they took their time with me. I enjoyed the friendly, personal atmosphere. When I got there for my appointment, Mike Drexler was wicked meticulous! He made sure the placement was something that both he and I liked, discussed every aspect of the tattoo with me before he started. It was on the ribs, and he was very good about telling me exactly what I needed to do to make his job easier for the both of us. Everyone in the shop was personable and funny. Mike did an amazing job. If something was strange he explained what he was doing. He took extra steps to make sure the tattoos came out right and he was able to tell when the shading on my largest star was getting to be too much for me and would switch to a different area to give me a break. All of the artists at Flyrite seem amazing, I would trust any of them with my body. All in all I highly recommend Flyrite, I am so happy with this tattoo, and I am so thrilled about Flyrite. My only hope for Flyrite is that at some point they add a female artist to their ranks. I will be back, either way. read more

They were the most expensive tattoo parlor I have ever been in. I'm still not sure why I didn't walk out when they quoted me the price. I could have gotten 3 of my other tattoos done for the price they charged me, and most of my other tattoos are bigger and they all have more detail. The people working weren't even nice. They made me feel like I was putting them out by even asking them to tattoo me. The results are good, but they would have been just as good at somewhere with better service and more reasonable prices. read more

I recently made a permanent move from LA to Brooklyn and wanted to get a tattoo of something to remind me of my family and friends back west. Having no knowledge of any studios on the east coast and only getting my tattoos done in LA, I asked a co worker who/where he would recommend for some art. He lives in Brooklyn and told me to check out Flyrite and talk to one of their artists named 'Jeb' for the piece I was interested in getting. i walked in on a Tuesday evening after work and met the guy at the front desk to ask if I could schedule an appointment with Jeb based on a referral from one of his clients. Jeb was tattooing in the back, so I handed the guy my image for him to check out. He walked back, then Jeb came out to meet me and talk about the artwork while his client in the chair took a break. i told him a friend of min/client of his referred me to him and he remembered the guy and asked how's he was doing, which was pretty cool since most tattoo artists see hundreds of people and only remember them by the image they gave and not on a personal level. he gave me some minor corrections (for tattooing purposes) based on the art and a few elements i wanted to add in the piece, when we agreed on what would look best i set up an appointment. Went for my tattoo a few days later for a 3pm session. I was excited, arrived at 2:30, and had a chance to go over the stencil he prepared based on the artwork and ideas I gave him for my piece. The atmosphere in Flyrite was very welcoming, good music, the guys were accommodating to my questions about the area, and all the Aritsts there were super cool to meet, no judging or talking shit about other shops like I've experienced in the past elsewhere. The artists there all seemed to all be a really tight crew and were hyping each others work up, getting excited about pieces they were working on, and giving positive reinforcement, which is always a good sign when you're in a new shop. Went in the back to get the piece. We went over placements, Then it was time. Since I had a 4 hour session booked I just relaxed in the chair and let him work. I don't really like to bother the artists when they are working so they can focus, but Jeb actually broke the ice and was asking about the move, apartment, friends, cracking jokes with me to feel welcome, which was fucking sweet because no one I've met here really has the time to talk. it turns out we had a mutual friend in LA and then that opened up a flood gate of awesome personal time and stories. Between conversations he would ask me to take a look at the work in the mirror, I was blown away, the shading and line work is exactly how i pictured it! I also have a back piece that desperately needs a cover-up so we talked about designs for that as well and he came up with a solution/image that will totally work based off of a few ideas i had. the session ended, and now i have EXACTLY what I wanted on my arm, couldn't be more happier with the work and color, took a few pics to send to my friends back west and they were loving it. His next appointment was running a little late so we chilled for a bit, finished our coffees and started sketching out my cover-up piece which I'm stoked about...booked a session in 2 weeks! I'm beyond stoked that I found a great shop in my neighborhood with a great artist. read more

I am almost done with my sleeve courtesy of Steve Huie at Flyrite. You couldn't ask for a better experience than Flyrite. Steve is meticulous with cleanliness, the shop is open and welcoming, and comfortable, with full lie down benches and lots of stuff on the walls to look at. Often when i come in, he puts on Slayer or Metallica for me on the ipod and we have a good old chinwag :) The other guys that work at Flyrite are also very personable, and they have someone dedicated to cleaning workstations and dealing with customers / walk ins while they are working. Steve's work is absolutely amazing (check out Flyrite instagram or facebook) and I am thrilled with how my sleeve is turning out. I have also seen a few pieces come out from Jeb while i'm there and I would say the same thing. They have very different styles though, so definitely make sure you check the website for examples to tie in with what you want. Overall a really great place, one of the best tattoo shops in the city. There is a reason Steve has a waiting list of a few months! (Although you might get lucky with a cancellation...!) Do not hesitate to go. I also say this having had a tattoo at East Side Ink and Hand of Glory in Park Slope previously - both great places, but Flyrite really has the edge. read more

I got a finger tattoo, and the artist went way too deep and blew it out, now, my finger looks all foggy and pretty bad. I need to get it retouched after its fully healed. Not good. Not to mention, I couldnt bend my hand for a week because it was so bruised. Never going back, they over charged for a shit job. My poor rating is mainly due to the artist, rather than the shop itself. I looked at the work in the shop and online and was told good things about Flyrite, so I decided to make an appointment. First off, this place is CASH ONLY, which wasn't too convenient, as the ATM at the diner down the street gave me 3 surcharges in all to obtain the cash for the deposit/tattoo itself. That aside, the artist I booked my appointment with was a few days away from moving to California, and wasn't concerned at all with gaining loyal customers in NYC apparently. He did not introduce himself, and was pretty much silent the entire time he tattooed me. I honestly don't care too much about him being impolite, but the biggest problem was his failure to produce a tattoo that I was happy with. My idea was very simple, and he would not listen to the things I wanted changed. The icing on the cake was that he over charged the hell out of me, not because I was rude to him, but simply because he knew he wouldn't be seeing me again (because he was moving). Bad karma for him. Long story short, Flyrite has a slew of great tattoo artists, I simply picked the worst one to tattoo me. Now i paid WAY too much money for a tattoo that I am not happy with, which is partly my fault for not doing enough research but mainly the artists fault for blowing it and not giving a shit. Cheap tattoos arent good, and good tattoos arent cheap, but bad tattoos that arent cheap....thats just fucked up. I will not be going back to Flyrite. read more

Visited Flyrite Tattoo after significant research. I was a wingman for a friend who has always wanted to get inked. She told me to meet her at a place on Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn. Good news is that its right near the subway station and super easy to locate. Apparently its at a tattoo crossroads as I passed a couple of other establishments. When I walked into Flyrite, I was greeted by a very nervous tattoo virgin but Steve, the artist, put the situation at ease. The parlor is very clean and friendly. Steve was very accommodating to my friend who had a specific design. He was able to create and customize the image for her and explained the process and aftercare before we got started. The experience was so relaxed and enjoyable that I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is thinking about or further developing their appreciation of this unique art. My newly inked buddy was very happy and she said it was not painful at all. Numbing cream is not part of the protocol but this place makes an "indelible mark" on the successful business and creative practice of tattoos!
