My husband and I decided to go on a short road trip on Christmas Eve. We saw on their website that they would be open on Christmas Eve from 9 am to 2 pm. We drove for over two hours to get here. We finally got here at 1 pm and there was no other customers' cars in the parking lot. We were getting ready to go out. The owner saw us inside, got out (as we are coming out of the car), changed the sign from "Open" to "Closed". Went into shop and did not come out. There was No communication or nothing. If you didn't want any customers that day, don't fucking put online that you are going to be open or close the shop right in front of the customers who obviously got there after certain drive since we are not your locals. So Rude. Racist i would even put. Towards outsiders (outside of Talkeetna). You only like tourists' money in Summer so you put your fake kindness it seems. read more

A warm delicious oasis near the entrance to Talkeetna just off the main highway. The coffee was very good! I had a veggie quiche (crustless and gluten free). It was full of gourmet cheese and about 3 inches thick. They had a lot of food and beer to cater to people avoiding gluten despite being a bakery specializing in fresh gluten filled bread. Tons of vegetarian options too. If you're traveling with small kids there is a fun little play kitchen in the seating area to keep them occupied. read more

The food was alright however, I really enjoyed the birch tea and small treats such as tea cookie and rugelach we bought..would definitely recommend stopping here for tea/snacks..I could also see that bread was being freshly baked and the staff was really nice. read more

4.5 stars. I wish this place was closer to downtown Talkeetna. Stopped to check out this popular jewel en route to the main section of Talkeetna. What I found was a jewel of a place. Cozy bakery with ample seating & a ton of tantalizing cookies, cakes, pizza, salads & home cooked meals. Ambiance: Wooded hippie chic, 4.5 stars. I wanted to try one of everything and the Lemon Thyme Greek Yogurt Cheesecake was tempting, but I passed (serious flaw in judgement, right?). Instead I had their Hippie Chick Cookie, an oatmeal chocolate chip like standby on crack. Loads of add ons that was crafted with love: 4 stars. We returned on our way back to Anchorage and I had their Coconut Mango Pineapple Banana Muffin with chunks of powerful fruit and a crunchy sugar top (5 stars!) Also, their Sharp Cheddar-Pear Scone was outrageous with a savory-sweet contrast going on, loved it (5 stars!) However, it was their Apricot Rugelach that was out of this world!! Two days later I'm still dreaming of our first date! Brilliant & bright apricot with coconut and almonds that brought tears to my eyes, well not literally, but practically. 5 stars easy! I got a baker's dozen for the plane and I was so glad for it. Tally: Ambiance: 4.5 stars Hippie Chick Cookie: 4 stars Coconut Mango Pineapple Banana Muffin: 5 stars! Would give this bakery negative stars if possible. Ordered a breakfast sandwich on "fresh" French baguette with poached eggs and cheese. Sandwich came out out cold, as in refrigerator cold. There was no cheese on it. When I asked if they could heat it up, they microwaved it and returned my $8.00 sandwich to me. It was completely inedible, as the eggs had turned to rubber and I could not chew through the bread. Unbelievable! read more

The food is quite good. Lots of local, fresh ingredients, and creative combinations and a decent variety of things you wouldn't see everywhere. Baked goods, sandwiches and paninis, pizzas, hummus, salsas, etc. Wines and beer on tap and bottles. Definitely worth a visit. Don't go hungry, though. I've never had less than a 35 minute wait. Always painfully slow. Usually pretty crowded, but that doesn't seem to make much difference. You have to wait for great food, totally understandable. Big these guys definitely seem to take their time. Fun atmosphere and a nice vibe interior and exterior. It'd get more stars if it wasn't so slow. read more

I really like this place and everything they are about. They provide a wholesome healthy and for the most part, friendly atmosphere. They offer a 5% discount for things like arriving via motorless transpo, if you exercise 30 minutes outdoors that day. The empty boxes of Full Circle Farms at the front is record of their desire to provide the healthiest and tastiest food possible. Past visits have been to get a quick delish dessert, coffee, or a loaf of artisan bread. All have been wonderful. Recently we split a supposedly small Mediterranean Pizza and a large salad. Both were good, maybe not the greatest. The wood fired pizza was well-topped flavorful, whole-wheat crust, but when it arrived at our table it was a bit tepid and a tad soggy. Perhaps it had been a little over-sauced and/or left out of the oven too long before it arrived at our table. Not really excusable as we were one of two parties seated. Hopefully next time will be more rewarding. We really liked the whole wheat crust though. The salad was fairly simple, and fairly pricey even for organic, apple slices were a nice touch, but we would have liked a bit more other types of greens other than just romaine. Well, it is winter after all. We give that one another chance too. For dessert, many to choose from, cookies, flourless browness, cheesecake etc, we tried the house original rhubarb baklava, it was very good. The beer and wine selection is thin but seemingly good choices. I had an old vine Zin and partner has Old Rasputin stout, both were very good. Service, aside from perhaps letting the pizza sit out too long before serving, was friendly. For Talkeetna, and Ak, this is definitely worth a try. read more

We went on Sunday and they don't serve their pizzas then :-/ they are served on few weekday evenings between 4-9. Their menu is very limited with little choice everyday, I suppose. We ordered veggie enchiladas that wazoo enough. It was better than the panini we ordered. The bread seem under-cooked to us. Tried their brownie which kind off made the trip worth it. read more

About 6-7 weeks before my wedding, my husband and I switched from having a family friend make dinner to having the flying squirrel cater. I was thrilled they were available to do so. Because we were still supplying the appetizers ourselves, they just catered dinner and I found the per person pricing to be very affordable! I spoke with the owner, Anita, back and forth about what we wanted and how the food would be set up. She was very helpful and informative! We ordered the vindaloo salmon, apricot chicken, garden salad, birch syrup roasted potatoes and root vegetables and bread. Everything was cooked perfectly and DELICIOUS. Anita was very accommodating with my various inquiries/requests (for example, pre-plating all the salads on the table while appetizers were being enjoyed outside). I visited the cafe prior to the wedding and got some baked goods and they were all spectacular, so I felt like I was in good hands for the catered dinner! The cafe is quaint, warm, and inviting - and they do some incredibly interesting baked goods, soups and pizzas! I wouldn't hesitate to enjoy a meal here or use the flying squirrel for catering. The staff at the wedding was professional and very much non-disruptive. Just in and out! We had a ton of food leftover which we enjoyed for days after! Dessert bars! Hadn't seen these since cafeteria food, but these were so much better than those memories. If you are Yelping Talkeetna eateries, you probably are from out of town (otherwise you've personally eaten at all of the restaurants) coming for a Denali flight. On your way in, you'll likely be driving fast on the highway leading into town in the hopes of ending an interminably long trek and blow right by this place. But if you catch a glimmer of of a building with a flying squirrel sign, turn around and head in for some cafe style treats. The place has a hippy vibe to it and specializes in the natural genre of cuisine. Food rotates, so even if you check the webpage, the items you want might not be there, but chances are there will be plenty to pick from. There is massive set of teas and coffee to choose from, which was overkill for people like us who choose only between green or black tea but appeals to some crowds. We were only in town for two days, but made two stops. First one we ate soups which were quite hearty and the second was to return to stock up on the awesome desserts. It takes a long time to get where you are going in Alaska, so even if you are planning to eat at another place further in Talkeetna, stop here on your way in and out of town to grab snacks for the long car trip ahead. Service was friendly and we were served by a younger woman with one of those smiling fresh faces you see in foaming cleanser ads. The place is an order at the counter style with tables. Walls are adorned with art that appeared to be for sale that added a nice local touch. You bus your own plates and silverware on the way out. So it is casual throughout the experience. read more

This place has charm! It's super cute and they have several vegan and veggie options! They even had a raw vegan brownie :-) We got lunch from there before taking the Hurricane Turn Train on the Alaska Railroad. we also had cheese and apple scones while we waited on our lunch to be prepared. I had an egg, cheese, potato, spiced black bean, avocado, squash burrito. My friend had a salmon grilled cheese which he thought was excellent! Stop by and check these people out. The name Attracted me here. When I saw their menu had vegan items I was sold. Tucked in the woods on your way in or out of Talkeeta, sits this little lodge. It's cute and worth a stop. I'm all about sweets, treats and goodies. My only complaint is that it's TOO sweet. I never thought I would be saying that. But it seems like there is a little too much sugar used. It is spring break and we rented a cabin near Talkeetna for a couple days. Treated the family to a late breakfast. Hand made fresh and delicious food made with a smile just in front of your eyes! We had pizza margarita with fresh cherry tomatoes, basil and flowers from the garden, a kale salad (it was so good that we ordered a second one !) and plenty of rogalach to remind us of home. Locals also recommend the smoked salmon pizza special of the day. They had good draft beers and wine selections. This place has awesome bagels and baked goods. We came here both mornings we were in Talkeetna and I got the bagel with PB+J both times. I was pleasantly surprised that the dish came with a bit of fruit as well. I think that while their baked goods are very high quality, their service is a little shaky. I initially was given toast rather than a bagel, and they gave my sister a chai latte rather than a matcha one. These were small mishaps, however, and did not outweigh the quality baked goods. This place is just plain cute. Their food, however, is just plain. It's all freshly made, which means you will be waiting a while. Sandwiches looked great and portion sizes were good, they just lacked flavor. I ended up dipping mine in Sriracha to give it some oomph! Peaceful location - close by to the main street in talkeetna, and away enough from the hustle. Fantastic service and super friendly staff. I left my phone and was able to get back only few days later. The staff was very supportive and kept the phone safe till I returned. After a few false starts on ordering {I really had my heart set on chorizo in my breakfast burrito, but alas they were out.} I settled on the combo with peasant stew and a half fancy grilled cheese...add bacon, of course! This was perfect for a chilly, rainy September afternoon. The atmosphere was super cute, the staff patient and friendly. Homemade goodness in Talkeetna. My husband had the fancy grilled cheese with salmon and said it was the best grilled cheese he ever had. The cream of greens and turkey meatball soups were equally of the best quality and very flavorful. Try the rhubarb aid. Tart and refreshing. We walked out with a bag full of baked goods to eat at the hotel. Smells wonderful inside the restaurant too. Note: pizza is Thursday to Saturday. We stopped in on a Tuesday. read more

Please look carefully to your right as you're driving into Talkeetna, or you are going to miss one of the real treats of this small Alaska town - Flying Squirrel Café! So very good! We went for breakfast after another rainy night spent in the camper van, and the kind staff, cozy ambiance, cheery décor, and especially, the GOOD GOOD food cheered us right up! The reason for being here is LOCAL - locally sourced food (to the extent possible in Alaska), homemade breads and pastries and cookies (oh, yeah!) and some other amazing food - including the breakfast quiche - which must have been nearly 3 inches thick, and was delicious. We had to buy some extra goodies from the pastry counter to take on the road - and while we were eating, plenty of other folks seemed to have the same idea. There are veggie chips made in house, some sweet crafty art on the wall, and of course, t-shirts emblazoned with "Eat. Real. Food." You sure will do this at Flying Squirrel... read more
