Fried Fish was delicious. Chowder so flavorful but rich (a cup would be plenty) Shrimp jambalaya ..... I expected more shrimp from a seafood place. This was a mild dish. Gator Poor Boy "Spicy" just means soaked in buffalo sauce.....Very Vinegary. Overall was ok but not good enough for us to come back. This is really hard for me, because I hate to give bad reviews, but after my second emergency trip to the bathroom, I have to warn others. Save yourself! I got a chicken and shrimp basket for $11, with one anorexic, overcooked chicken strip, 2 small shrimp, and a lot of stale unseasoned potato spears. The sensible move of getting their lemonade proved a mistake as well with that tasting like watered-down lemon juice concentrate with a couple cap fulls of artificial sweetener. Pretty good Southern fried, fast food. Fried catfish and hush puppies were really good. Yes, it's deep fried and battered with corn meal but it hits the spot if that's what you're looking for. The shrimp were also delicious, as was the fries. Items were still moist despite being in the fryer. The only thing that was just ok was the fried jalapeños. I've been to FF for other meals and the food has been great. This weekend they did 3lbs of crawfish for $20. For Memphis, that price is great. Because they are heavy handed with the seasoning sprinkled in top, next time I'll ask them to hold it. Hopefully they can keep crawfish around for the season. read more

I'm so conflicted giving five stars to a counter-order restaurant. It hurts my heart. WHY IS IT SO EFFECTIVE IN THIS RESTAURANT? My fiance and I were craving crab legs and crawfish- I've been everywhere in midtown looking for crawfish for two weeks, to no avail. He found Flying Fish on google, and we headed that way. Parking in Peabody Place was $10, because it was a busy Saturday with nice weather, and the street parking was unavailable. We walked a few doors down to Flying Fish and immediately felt welcomed by both the atmosphere and the manager. The checkered tablecloths indicate a casual feel, the seats are comfy, fans were rolling, and there is comical decor everywhere. Guests who bring photos of their fishing stories are added to the bathroom walls and there are Big Mouth Billy Bass EVERYWHERE in the front room (guests who bring their unwanted Billy Bass in get a free basket of catfish). I am not a fan of ordering at a counter. I am too ADHD (or maybe old) to read off of a wall menu. I asked for a regular menu, and we found a pound of crawfish, two pounds of snow crab legs, and a dozen oysters, plus two beers. The buzzer erupted in lights and vibration only moments later, and FOUR HUGE TRAYS of food were waiting for us to bring them to our table. I realized I'd forgotten to order some hush puppies, and the manager gave us a few for free. We began to dig in to the potatoes, corn, crab, crawfish, and oysters, realizing our beers were beautifully matched to the well-seasoned seafood (thankfully not presented in a wet plastic bag like newer gimmicky places in the area). We ate, gratefully, and both agreed the oysters at Flying Fish were the best we've ever had in Memphis. Sweet, not salty or too meaty. Here is where the DIY aspect of the place comes in handy. Need a lemon? Don't wait for a server, go get the lemon from the condiment bar! Everything is a short walk and grab away. My only qualm might be that on a weekday, the pace would be a lot more rushed, with local merchants and office workers on a quick lunch, but on this magical February 15th, it was flawless. Very good food. Very large portions. They have a lot of hot sauce, lemons, and tartar sauce by the soda machines. The shrimp was good. The catfish was good. The lemonade was watered down. Pleasantly surprised with this place. Looks kinda funny with all the fish on the wall but wait until you know why. I'm not telling. I ordered the 4 shrimp and 2 catfish. Friend ordered grilled grouper po boy. Fish is cooked perfect crunchy texture with the corn meal coating. Shrimp the same. Wish the coating had more flavor but that's what hot sauce is for right? Before I talk about food, let me say my frozen mango and lime margarita was the bomb!! You place your order at the counter before you sit down, and the cashier immediately hands me my drink after we paid. I was done then! Five stars just for that alone! The fact that I had my drink before I sat down, yes!!!!! Now let's talk food. I had the shrimp Poboy which was very good. I didn't check the menu to see what all comes in the sandwich, but if I did I would say leave the tomatoes off. The shrimp were so hot they made the tomatoes soggy. Other than that It was still good. Was staying in Memphis for a couple of nights. Crossed over from The Peabody to get a light lunch. Ate the crawfish chowder--YUM! Good seasoning, flavorful, plenty of crawfish! Catfish tacos were pretty good too. Day #2: More of that crawfish chowder!! This time some boiled shrimp...tasty---but that chowder was everything! Nice cafe ambiance! We saw this place on a show and need to come for a try. The fish is very fresh and tasty. Prices are reasonable. Husband was a happy man with his whole tilapia. I got the grilled mahi-mahi and crawfish chowder which was so amazing wish I got a big bowl instead of just a cup. The reason for four stars instead of five is the inside need a little face lift. Ie torn seats unbalanced table and new table clothes. But all in all we would come back regardless. read more

The Flying Fish is a very cool place located in Memphis, Tennessee. I liked it as soon as I walked in and saw all the fish mounted on the wall. Funny signs were posted on the wall. We walked in at about lunch time, and saw that the restaurant was about 3/4 full. As soon as you walk in, you see the counter where you order at. After ordering, you find a seat, and wait for your order to be called. We ordered a shrimp and oyster po boy sandwich, and a "Snappy" grilled catfish. While waiting for food, we went to the self service to grab napkins, lemons, tartar sauce, water, and everything else for our meal. The food came out quickly. The Po Boy sandwich was filled with shrimp and oysters. It made for a good sandwich. The catfish was nicely cooked and had a good spicy flavor. Along with the fish came a side of pickled tomatoes and fried okra. All were good. The Flying Fish is a nice place in Memphis. They served tasty food at a great price. Decided to pass on heavier BBQ; beau suggested fish and chips and the reviews looked good for FF. Super fresh and hot the way we like our food. Fish stayed hot thru the entire meal. He got the Monday tilapia basket for coal $10.49 for one piece (bigger and thicker than catfish pieces.) A basket includes fried and a couple of hush puppies (bread thingy's). Nothing was greasy, thus good ! I got 3-piece catfish basket (when in Rome). The spicy grilled version didn't sound as enticing, but if they had blackened, I would have been ALL over THAT !! Beau liked both (tilapia and catfish), but liked the catfish better since he felt it melted in his mouth. And I liked the thicker tilapia filet. Personal preferences I guess. We were both happy with our full order. Definitely come back here if/when we're in town again. Ambience is laid back, blues playing. Order at the counter first, then seat yourself, and your medallion alerts you when your order is ready for pickup. Nice variety of condiments (malt vinegar, Worcester sauce, Tabasco red and green, Louisiana hot sauce and a few others.) also a treat they have paper towels in the bathrooms in the current age of electric hand dryers. Only downside was parking. Meter parking until 10pm M-Sat, but if you don't mind walking a couple extra blocks, away from the core "Entertainment" district by Beale or BBKing, meters stop at 6pm. I have not had Flying Fish in about 3 months.. this is one of my all time favorite spots in the inner Downtown area. The food is always so delicious, the staff members are super chill and nice, and they have the best tilapia tacos ever! I also found their banana pudding tonight and I am in love with it.. it has such a creamy light taste. This review truly pains me to write. We just moved to Harbor Town. We were tired and hungry from the move. Myriad unpacked boxes were still strewn about but it was my birthday so we called an end to the unpacking so me the Birthday Boy could peruse Yelp and find some good eats. I found Flying Fish was close and read many reviews that were extremely positive about both the pleasant demeanor of the hosts and the quality of the food. My wife was kind enough to offer to pick up the food that we called in since it was my birthday. Between the three people ordering we had seafood gumbo, fried oysters, frog legs fried shrimp gator bites and fried catfish. I'll get straight to the point. All of the fried dishes were overcooked to the point of being chewy. In addition, fried food needs to not only be cooked correctly but seasoned correctly as well. None of the fried dishes met this standard in our opinion. The seafood gumbo was passable. We sampled our own dishes and each others dishes and reached the same conclusion. Not good, not going to finish these dishes, not going back. The bill did not justify the quality of what we received especially since this was a birthday meal in our new abode. I'm all for giving establishments a second go but considering the occasion and the bill it's a hard pass. read more

We were in Memphis visiting the sites and wanted a late lunch around 2:45 pm on a Friday afternoon. We stopped by the Flying Fish as it was nearby. Lucky for us, there was no line when we walked in. We were able to order right away and be seated quickly. Since I am not a big fish eater, I ordered a pound of boiled shrimp and a side order of squash. The shrimp was well-seasoned with Old Bay and I had both butter and cocktail sauce for dipping. The squash was tasty and I should have ordered more of them. Everything tasted wonderful. This is my kind of place. I can see myself getting mellower in my old age and giving a lot more 5 star reviews, but I just loved this little place. Very cozy and casual and I felt right at home immediately. It's very funny to pass the short time waiting for your fleshly prepared meal reading the "fisherman/woman stories" on the wall. The Southern sides (spinach, okra bites, buttered corn, etc.) that come with your meal are sooooo good and the self-serve sweet tea is so out of this world it had me addicted after just a couple of visits! It's all about the seafood here, of course, and the open kitchen adds to the integrity and homeyness of the place. I had fried dishes as well as grilled dishes and all were delicious, not overly complicated and perfectly portioned. Flying Fish is right across from the Holiday Inn Express where I stayed so it was an easy choice and one I'm glad I made. You order at the register and then they give you a "puck" that lights up when your order is ready and you go grab it yourself so it's semi-cafeteria style, which is cool. There is nothing pretentious about this place and it has that cool Southern laid back vibe that makes you feel at home even if you've just been in town for ten minutes. Pro tip: order your meal "snappy" and the whole kitchen will chant "make it snappy"! Fun and delicious. This is the worst seafood platter I've ever had, They must have not had salt for the fries.

I love oysters. Growing up in New England, I could have them all day long. So while traveling in Memphis, I had to have my seafood, so came to FF and ordered a dozen oysters. Boy they were THE most unappetizing and bland oysters I've ever had. I ordered dozen, but the waiter gave me 14.. not sure if they can't count or they can't sell them... but let me tell you, they are not briny, not juicy, I'm not sure what I was eating. Toss!! The shrimp were good and not over cooked. The Oysters were delicious and fresh. The beers was priced just right. Their fry pickles are great. 1) Place has the normal Fish-Fry shack look. It is pleasant. 2) Staff was not unfriendly but also not very welcoming. It felt like "...place your order. Pay us and get out of the way.... next person please!!!" 3) Food was delicious.
