This is a great venue in a great centralized location. For our event they furnished breakfast which had a lot of choices and was very good. One day for lunch they had a luau theme and a whole roasted hog. They furnished sweet and savory snacks morning and afternoon. Things like egg rolls, potstickers, wings, mini tacos etc., aren't typical for snacks and we're pretty good. Top of the building is a bar / restaurant "study area. read more

A university conference center offering hotel rooms on the side. Note: I'm evaluating this as a hotel. As a home away from home conference center, the rating would be a bit stronger. As far as hotels go this place has a number of strengths: - decent sized rooms and bathrooms - attached, underground parking ($12/day) - classic, arts and craft decor - nice looking lobby - location- right on the SE edge of campus - nice but small pub on top floor (opens at 4:30) Opportunities -pillows are pretty hard -only queen beds -either one bed or two per room -rooms feel a little Spartan- sort of a nicer bigger dorm room - shower heads are extra low flow (felt like it took 10 min just to get wet) We stayed one night in January on a non-sports weekend (school hadn't resumed yet for the semester) so we had the place mostly to ourselves and there were plenty of spaces in the attached parking garage. Checkin process was quick and easy and the student inn keepers were friendly and helpful. As hotels go, this place is on par with a 3-star hotel. If you want something a bit more plus, around the same price with a few more amenities, try the new Hampton Inn a block away (I've stayed there a couple of times). Overall the Fluono center is nice but not my first choice for a campus hotel. read more

The prices are half the price of other hotels in the area if you're a UW alum, so that's an amazing plus right off the bat. Unassuming on the outside, the Fluno's interior matches with a lack of impressiveness. But it's all good enough, and there is underground parking for $15 a night. It's a truly central location on campus too. read more

So ... I've been here a week and was kind of underwhelmed but today I'm more than underwhelmed. After going to the on-site restaurant which is full of people drinking - I go to my room to order food only to be told they aren't doing in room dining because they are ... busy. I called the Front Desk who indicated they didn't know anything about this - and then ... nothing. No help, no let me call and see what is happening ... nope, just nothing. After a week of solo training all I wanted to do was have a meal and go to bed. Now I'm going to have to go outside the hotel and find something. It's Wisconsin ... in January. I attended a conference at UW-Madison and was housed at the Fluno Center, a university-affiliated hotel. The location is quite good; they are two blocks from State Street and a five minute walk to the main campus. The rooms are well-appointed; the bathrooms were large and spa-like, and even included a fan and high-end toiletries. At stay at the Fluno Center comes with a free breakfast; the breakfast was by far the best free breakfast I've had in a hotel. You get to dine in their swanky dining room, and their selections are generous and high-quality. Overall, not a bad choice for a hotel. read more

I was really torn on whether or not to give this facility 2 or 3 stars. My experience was more "Meh-I've experienced better," but given the limitations on hotel rooms the weekend we were in Madison, I think I have to settle on "A-OK." Really the best part about staying here is the location on campus close enough to walk everywhere, including Kohl Center and La Bahn Arena. The staff was nice enough, although I think some were annoyed by the volume of questions I had about the best way to walk from place to place on campus given the cold temperatures (we stayed in February). I definitely wanted to ensure the shortest and easiest path. The room was just mediocre. The bed was tiny; it was listed as a queen size bed, but it had to be a double because we have a queen at home and I felt like I was hanging on the edge of the bed all night. The mattress and box springs were also several inches wider than the base of the bed (see photo), which meant at any time we sat on the edge of the bed to put our shoes on or whatever, the whole thing could have tipped over. It was really quite comical. The bathroom was outdated, which didn't make it feel particularly clean. The towels were small and extremely rough on the skin. Incidentally, I used the fitness center one morning, and the towels offered in that room where extremely plush, new, and nice--the complete opposite of what was provided in the room. I ended up taking one of them with me upstairs to use instead of the towels provided to us. Given the type of facility this is (feels like an old dormitory turned hotel), the fitness center was surprisingly nice: two treadmills, a nice set of free weights, etc. The worst part of the fitness center was that the room itself was probably 70-72 degrees inside at least with the heat constantly pumping in, which is just way too hot for a fitness center in my opinion. I felt like I was running in a sauna. Breakfast is served until 10 AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and they are not joking about 10 AM. We arrived at 9:47 (ish) for breakfast and some of the food was already put away. By 9:58, MOST of the food was put away. The breakfast buffet was decent enough in terms of variety, but the quality of food was nothing to get excited about. The staff in the breakfast area was extremely friendly and accommodating, though. I appreciated that a lot. I didn't get the same warmth from the front desk staff. The most unsettling part of the trip was when we were in our room one morning with the "privacy please" tag in our door key card slot indicating that we did not want our room cleaned and/or that we did not want to be disturbed. I was, in fact, taking a quick nap after a restless night of sleep while my partner was doing some work from the easy chair in the corner of the room. Despite the presence of the "Privacy Please" sign, we were stunned when our door unlocked from the outside and someone on the housekeeping staff walked into our room. She said she was coming in to ask if we wanted our room cleaned and indicated that she was told we were checking out that day. In fact we were not checking out until the next day, and given that we were staying only two nights did not intend to have our room cleaned until we checked out. We were speechless that the interaction played out this way. There was no knock or anything. She just walked right in. When she saw we were in the room, she didn't walk in far or anything, but we definitely felt uneasy about the security of our belongings when we were out because clearly the "Privacy Please" sign was going to do nothing to prevent someone from walking into our room. The room also did not offer the option of a safe in which we could store our electronics, etc. While I have certainly experienced much more unpleasant hotel stays, the best word I can use to describe this experience is just "mediocre." We were thankful to find a place right on campus to stay since all of the other hotels were booked, but were we to do this again, we would work much harder to stay somewhere else. read more

This is a really nice hotel - if you're attending classes on site. It might be a really nice hotel regardless, but for me the greatest value was in not needing my coat to go from hotel room to breakfast to the conference room. The rooms are large and clean, nicely laid out and comfortable. The lunch-break / breakfast seating area is very much cafeteria style, but far higher quality food than you would expect on campus. The "Study Pub" on the 8th floor is okay, but not very good, even for a hotel bar restaurant. Fortunately, that's good enough, because if you put your coat on and walk outside, you're very near State Street, with all the walking-distance eateries you can stand. read more

I recently attended a UW conference and many of our lectures were held at the Fluno center. I was very impressed by the quality of the large lecture hall- each seat provided lots of desktop space, two plugs and an unobstructed view of the the projector and speaker. Sound traveled well and AV system worked well. Snacks in the morning and afternoon were high quality- some healthy options and some more sugary options. Coffee, tea, hot water, and cold water with all of the expected fixins were provided throughout the day. We had lunch in the attached restaurant/pub and were all very impressed by the quality of food- expected to be college dorm-cafe-like but actually felt like a decent restaurant with a great variety of options. I can see why our group chooses to return to the same place year after year. read more

Fantastic hotel located in the heart of the city. The feel of it is very unique. It's part hotel/part business school/part conference center so don't expect all the amenities of a typical hotel. However with all there is to do around the area you likely won't be spending much time inside anyways. There is a restaurant on the bottom floor which has a decent breakfast spread and a bar/lounge area on the top floor. The rooms themselves are very clean and comfortable. The staff is incredibly helpful at making recommendations on places to eat and things to do in the area. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a reliable hotel in a great location. I was there for a conference. It's very convenient if you have anything to do with the University - everything is within walking distance. I wanted to mention excellent service I got, above and beyond. I left behind my new pair of fancy prescription glasses in my hotel room. I was so very pleasantly surprised that they made their way back to me. First, the housekeeping let the concierge know, and second, the concierge corresponded with me and mailed them back to me. Great place to stay when coming to to University or for a conference. It is great to be in the heart of campus and so close to everything. If you stay multiple times you will recognize staff from year to year, and you know they know what they are doing! Since it isn't a hotel there are always a few things I see as a traveler. It takes a bit longer to check in, there are no plastic laundry bags in the rooms, and the bar/room service hours are shorter than conventional hotels. That is pretty quick to excuse for a great place to stay that is convenient to meetings. read more

I am just back from my third FUSION CEO-CIO Symposium at Fluno. Unfortunately you can't get in there unless you are attending a conference. The food, service and rooms are so good it is worth finding a conference you can register for just for the experience. Everyone raved about the food, and today when the conference overflowed the first floor seating, the staff moved a few of us upstairs, brought cutlery and drinks, came by a few minutes later with a tray of their excellent desserts which generally overwhelmed the will power of most attendees. Also excellent wines in the pub at the dinner in the evening. Wireless everywhere and the auditorium has all the latest tech for speakers and wireless and electrical outlets on the desk extending around the room. This is the best conference facility -- auditorium, hotel rooms and food -- that I have experienced. 8th floor has a "study pub" open from 4 to 11 with a bar and pool table and, I saw on the wall plaque, an exercise facility. The restaurant area seats about 75, I think -- great food, great service and great wines. read more

Stayed at the Fluno Center for 6 nights. Although there have been a few upgrades since my last stay two years ago (furniture, bathroom) it was still a disappointment. The worst issue was the room felt damp: damp air, damp carpet, damp bedding. And after 6 days, damp clothes...as if we'd gone camping. I couldn't wait to check out and would prefer not to stay at the Fluno again until whatever systemic HVAC problems (or whatever is causing this) are resolved. read more

I stayed overnight for a conference. When I checked in, I asked about parking and was told that it would be covered as I was using their room. I showed the receptionist my parking ticket for validation and he didn't even look but simply said to use the same ticket for exit. The next day morning, I double checked with the front desk and was again told the parking was covered. However, when I was driving out of the parking garage, I was asked to pay for parking. I went back to the front desk, and the same receptionist basically replied that because the Fluno Center doesn't own the parking structure so I will have to pay for the parking and he couldn't do anything about it. If this was the case, he should have said it at the very beginning. I felt being tricked. Other than this, the room was clean hence 2 stars for my overall experience. By the way, I wish I knew who the front desk receptionist was but he didn't even wear a name badge! read more

We stayed at the Fluno Center this past weekend for graduation. The location was fantastic and the room accommodations were nice. The service was terrible. The front desk clerk, Estefania, was not helpful, was unenthusiastic and honestly seemed as if she could care less about our stay. We had a party of approx. 12 people (family) and after graduation we went to the 8th Floor Study Pub. The guys working the bar (Colin and a few others) were not friendly and several people in our party commented about how rude they were. It truly was unbelievable. We were ordering food and drinks and we had to hunt them down for things, ask multiple times for things and the bar was not busy at all. They were arrogant and rude! Then about midnight, there was so much noise/music coming from the bar across the street it was unbelievable. This went on for about 2 1/2 hours. During that time, it was impossible to get any sleep. When I mentioned it to Estefania the next morning she said it's graduation and that happens and I should have asked for a room on the other side. Her lack of service was par for the course. It was my first time staying there (how would I have known to ask for the other side?) and it will honestly be my last. I was unimpressed with the service. It's more difficult to be rude than nice. These students working the front desk and study pub have A LOT to learn regarding service and friendliness. It's so unfortunate because the rest of the weekend was fabulous! Hopefully the management at the Fluno Center can train their staff to meet the price tag of the stay. read more

We went for Restaurant Week and everything was great. The salad, steak and dessert was amazing. I was kind of already full because we filled up on apps at a friend's house but I got there and kept eating because it was so good. The service was great - nice and friendly. This is the hotel and business center for UW-Madison. If you get put up here, you're in luck! The place is super clean and modern with big rooms and quality bedding, and the staffers are attentive and always respond quickly to problems. The dining room is superb, too, and I have two great filet mignon memories here. (Not sure if you can access it without being part of a Fluno event or staying there, but I don't see why they'd not want your business, so give it a shot.) read more

If location to the campus and the major venues of UW is your priority, then this cannot be beat. It has just about everything that a commercial chain hotel would have with dining options, fitness room, front desk, etc. The only thing that you might want to be aware of is that you probably have a 50% chance of getting a room with a view of a parking facility and outdoor HVAC equipment. We did not know that, and so when the receptionist said I'm putting you in the back because it's probably going to be a noisy weekend on the other side, we just believed him. But, honestly, the rooms with a view are in demand and you'll have to ask for it beforehand rather than be defaulted to the rear. read more

We have held two conferences a year here since 2003. The conference planners have been very helpful and accommodating. The staff in general have been fantastic. Christopher the catering manager is very fun to work with and Alex who handles the sound, etc. in the auditorium goes out of his way to get things right. On our event surveys, the Fluno Center gets consistently great marks from our attendees. Marks off for wireless though (it's sometimes spotty) but they are always upgrading things. read more
