We had our wedding at the Morrison House in Alexandria, and our wedding package included a two-tier cake from Fluffy Thoughts. The process of scheduling a tasting was via email and super easy, and we got to choose 4 cake flavors from their website for our tasting. All of the cakes were very moist, and although some were too sweet for our liking, we were very happy with our choice of their toasted coconut flavor, which was super delicious and well-balanced. In terms of design, their website and Instagram have a ton of samples of their previous work, so we were able to come up with a design based on their previous work. At the wedding, the cake was gorgeous and visually perfect. Their buttercream work was smooth and flawless! The cake was also delicious and moist, though I believe they left out a layer of chocolate ganache. Nevertheless, our guests still loved it and because the cake was so beautiful, the missing ganache didn't really matter. We had one minor issue getting the final proposal after our tasting, but after that was resolved, everything was seamless, perhaps because we worked through the hotel. Price-wise, I can't really compare since we were contracted with the hotel's vendors, but I will say that this bakery charges a lot of extra fees, including a $50 cake stand rental fee and $50 fee for the bakery to place flowers on the cake at the venue. I avoided these fees by buying our own cake stand and having our florist place the flowers. All and all, Fluffy Thoughts makes beautiful and delicious wedding cakes. Definitely recommend! read more

I first came across Fluffy Thoughts 5 years ago while trying on wedding dresses at the owner's sister's bridal salon. While the sampling of their cupcakes was good, we didn't discover the true magic until we had their cakes. For our son's birthday 2 years ago, i contacted Lara about a custom cake, and she was so pleasant and responsive. She was also able to turn around the cake quicker than anyone else, and the prices were very reasonable. The cake was out of this world good. All our guests raved about it, both for design and taste. For this year's party, we knew we wanted Fluffy Thoughts again, and they didn't disappoint. The staff is so sweet and helpful in the design process and actually responsive (which i found to be a problem with a lot of other shops). My husband has now requested this cake for his birthday cakes, and we have also taken it to large family functions. Nothing but glowing reviews. We always order more than we need so we can have leftovers! The cake itself is moist and flavorful without being overly sweet. We aren't icing people, but we love their Italian buttercream. If you want to be sure your cupcakes are going to be made...go to Georgetown Cupcake or Baked & Wired. No one answers the phone, so I emailed. Three or 4 emails back and forth with Lara detailing the colors, flavors, Icing...all with my phone number each time "call me if you need clarification or anything" And guess what? This past week I had a thought---A Fluffy Thought... (I know! I know! All together now---groan! LOL!) Our favorite local cupcake place, Sweetz Bakery, is closed for the first 2 weeks of July. No cupcakes with our tea! What's a girl to do? Then I saw Yelp friend, Claudia J.'s review, hence the Fluffy Thought. So, we stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon. I must say that unless you're very familiar with the area, it's not the easiest place to find. We got driving directions but while on Dolley Madison, my husband turned onto Old Dominion Drive instead of driving just a little bit further. We found Old Chain Bridge Road easily enough but with most buildings not having numbers on them, it took a bit of time to find the right building. On top of that, the entrance to the place is in the back of the building. So if you enter in the front, it would be easy to just assume you're in the wrong place. Yet...if we had correctly followed directions, we would have approached it by the back entrance. It's a small shop which could quickly get cramped if they had a lot of customers. However, we were the only customers there at the time. The clerk was very friendly and told us about all the baked goods. She then told us to take our time picking out the cupcakes we wanted. We chose 4 cupcakes --- 1 all vanilla (with sprinkles on top), 1 candy bar crunch, 1 raspberry swirl and 1 key lime. We had the same thing happen to us as did Claudia J. --- we weren't told that the key lime needed refrigeration. However, we had brought a cooler since it was so hot outside so that wasn't a worry. Later in the evening, I had the candy bar crunch one. This turned out to be the best cupcake of the 4. The cake part was like a chocolate/vanilla marble cake. The end result was a well balanced cake in terms of flavor. The vanilla part kept the chocolate part from being too rich. There was a mild chocolatey ganache in the middle of the cake---just enough to add flavor but not overpower the cupcake. The frosting was vanilla drizzled with caramel and with a few chocolate dots on top to add some crunch. My husband had the key lime. He told me that he tasted no lime flavoring at all and the cake part had a crunchy texture. I asked him what was the cause of the crunchiness and he couldn't explain it. He did say that he thought the cake had good density and moisture thus it held together well. In the end, while he didn't hate it, he was underwhelmed. Tonight, I had the vanilla one. This cupcake was overly sweet---so much so that it overpowered any vanilla flavoring that was in the cake and frosting. I've had far better vanilla cupcakes. My husband had the raspberry swirl. He described it as "strange". He said that the frosting was dry and crunchy which had him wondering if it had sat in the case for quite awhile. Once we got home, I did wrap and refrigerate the cupcakes to preserve freshness and flavor. He said that the cake part had raspberry pieces in it but no raspberry flavor at all. The frosting had some faint raspberry flavor, however. To sum it up --- we certainly won't go out of our way to buy cupcakes here again. I'm guessing that there are some flavors that they execute really well. Yet there are others that fall flat. I'm counting the days until Sweetz is up and running once again! read more

Cupcakes Tried and Loved: :::Tres Leches A must try, with a tres leches filling in the center. Eat with a fork! :::Key Lime :::Samoas Taste pretty freakin' close to the beloved Girl Scout Cookie. :::Smores Artistically, the cupcake looks phenomenal. However, the taste is spot on too! The bottom of the cupcake is a light graham cracker crust, and the center of the cupcake consist of marshmallow fluff. The topping of the chocolate frosting (not too sweet or overwhelming) is perfectly paired with the single marshmallow topping. :::Candy Bar Crunch Delicious! There is a surprise chocolate butter cream-ish center that compliments the cake, and frosted topping. :::Cookies and Creme WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE: Customer Service -I was NOT told that I needed to refrigerate the Tres Leches and Key Lime cupcakes!!! As I was walking out of the store, I overheard a woman behind the counter directing her employee on cupcakes that needed to be refrigerated. This caused me to inquire, if my cupcakes needed to be refrigerated. To which, I received what I interpreted as a defensive response on "key lime and tres leches". No apologies, just a brisk response and dismissal. -When being rung up, I was not advised that I had selected specialty cupcakes. No big deal! I merely asked, and then was advised that they entire top row on the display case is specialty cupcakes. The response that I received was rather defensive. Which resulting in my feeling the need to say, "Oh, I was just inquiring". -Finally, F.T.C. does not offer bags for clients to carry their purchases. At $3 a cupcake, especially having purchased over a dozen, one would assume that this would be offered as a courtesy to patrons. Maybe F.T.C. is attempting to be a Green company. Nevertheless, I like F.T.'s product and will most likely give them another shot. We ordered a three-tier wedding cake from Fluffy Thoughts. I had very high expectations based on the reviews and the photos. The staff were generally nice and responsive, but the biggest thing that threw us off was the dishonesty and lack of acknowledgement of their mistake. I had specifically asked for lavender colored cake to match the wedding theme. The cake sitting in the ballroom was NOT lavender but rather teal-blue. When I complained later, I was told the color looks different in the photo because of the lighting..... At first I thought it was just me, but later on when I saw other photos without the lights, the cake was definitely blue -- far from the lavender color I envisioned. Also, if the lighting made the color look blue-ish, why would my cake-topper, which was also lavender, doesn't change color? The cake itself was beautiful but the color was totally off. I was actually pretty upset when I saw the cake. If it was indeed the lighting, as what the owner said, then why didn't the color of the the cake topper change colors? After doing some research and talking to a couple of my avid baker friends, this is what I found out: The cake that was made may have been initially lavender but what they did not think through, when baking the cake, is that sometimes, butter creams might change colors as time passes. I spoke with several bakeries afterwards, and they said it happens sometimes. That part I understand. I wish they would have told me that when I emailed them after the wedding, instead of defending themselves and claiming the cake was lavender when it clearly wasn't. Also, they have been around long enough so they should have known that buttercream can change colors and should have been prepared for such color changes They do make fancy cakes, so I would still recommend. But PLEASE make sure that the color of your cake does not change in colors. read more

Hands down my favorite bakery! I have been eating/ordering cakes from Fluffy Thoughts for years now. The very first thing I had was their cake pops. I fell in love! Since then I've had a wide variety of their cakes, cupcakes, and macarons. The flavor, texture, and design are always so perfect. The cakes look and taste like pieces of heaven. Lara is absolutely wonderful to work with for custom orders. She is very prompt and does a wonderful job making sure each and every client gets exactly what they want. I have tried several cupcakes here so I know whats good and what's not. Samoa is my favorite. It's basically like the Girl Scout Samoa cookie. There's caramel filling inside too, but sometimes they really skimp you with it as there's not too much. But the coconut frosting is amazing! The milk and cookies cupcake and hot fudge sundae are good too. Very sweet frosting which I actually like! They used to have a cookie dough cupcake that was really good too, I think it was called Cookie Bonanza, but sadly it's gone now. I've also tried the Cannoli, the s'mores, and the vanilla which are nothing special. The cake part is a bit dry to me in the vanilla. The s'mores cupcake was so bad I couldn't eat it. The frosting was way too sticky and it wasn't even frosting...it was like marshmallow microwaved or something to me. Another thing to note is the staff isn't very friendly. They look at you and speak with some kind of attitude, which isn't pleasant. Oh and one last tip: they don't accept credit card unless you spend over $10, which is kinda lame to me. EDIT: I've also noticed that they don't wear gloves when handing you the cupcakes...that's kinda dirty because their hand/fingernails could touch the frosting or something when they hand it to you. The prices are a bit expensive but I guess that's because you're paying for the presentation and work that goes into bakery. Some of the cupcakes were a little hard/stale which was unfortunate considering we paid upward of $4 for them each. If I could change one thing about this place it would be that they would add inside seating or at least open the tasting room when it's not in use. Carrying cupcakes and cake pops on the go was kind of annoying and they started to melt in the heat. My wedding cake was amazing. Every single guest raved about it and pretty much everyone who could took some home and many asked for the bakery's business card. Not only did it taste amazing, but it looked better than I could have ever imagined. I think one tip for those that are worried about a dry cake is to avoid fondant - who needs it? The tasting was fun and everyone there was great to work with from start to finish. After my wedding, we went back to the hotel room to find a dozen cupcakes waiting for us, but who could eat them after so much wedding food? They were beautiful, though, and it was a lovely touch. The price was less per person than any other bakery I contacted, which is why I went with them. I'm taking off one star for the stand rental. I have no problem paying to rent a stand at all, but the "three business days" to return it was annoying simply because we had just gotten married and had to worry about how to get the cake stand back. To me, allowing couples to return them by the following weekend would make many newlyweds lives much easier, though I understand that the stands are needed. It wasn't a huge inconvenience because we just ended up picking up more cupcakes, but I'd have liked to be able to worry about it a few days after the big day, not the following morning. read more

I've been back many, many times and there are always new fun flavors to try, always delicious. I was super surprised at how much the cannoli cupcake tasted like a cannoli (I hate cannolis...) and how deliciously GirlScouty the Samoa flavor is. I tried key lime, which was just to die for with the graham cracker crust bottom and subtle but delicious lime flavor. Bacon maple was surprisingly good too. Other great flavors include the carrot cake, blackberry, and chocolate peanut butter. Over Easter, they made the cutest bunny butt cupcakes. I have a pic of that one. Since my first visit, I have only had one or two disappointing cupcakes, none of which have been dry (but which seems to be pervasive among the other yelpers). Wow! We loved working with Fluffy Thoughts and their staff. First off, we had our free tasting at their store in McLean, VA -- the cakes we tasted were moist and had lots of rich flavor. We were impressed with the range of cakes they had us try, as well as the various butter cream toppings. We ended up going through our vision for the wedding cake with the baker -- and right their on the spot she drew something up for us and created a visual. We liked what we saw, so we were able to go into more detail on the cake layers and what we wanted. We ended up going with a mix of chocolate and vanilla -- with an Italian buttercream. We also decided to add a sugar sunflower, which was an additional cost. On the wedding day when i saw the cake i was super happy with it. It look super simple, but elegant. The sunflower was beautifully designed and placed. Overall the cake looks gorgeous. Now,when we got to eating the cake, we were so thrilled. It was moist, flavorful and super yummy. Disclaimer: First off, I have the sweet tooth of a 7 year old child. Secondly, I've probably purchased more cakes from Fluffy Thoughts than I have cupcakes. The thing I like the most about FT is that they have a wide variety of gluten free cake flavors. Not just chocolate and vanilla. Honestly, you can't tell if the cake was glutenous or not. It's really moist and light. I'd highly recommend trying out a gluten free cake even if you don't have Celiac disease. Extra bonus - they don't tack on an additional charge for using different ingredients!! My personal favorites are the pistachio and almond cake. There aren't huge chunks of these nuts - it's a more subtle flavor. I really enjoy their fruit fillings because they use real fruit. Not some jelly fill or smucker's jam just slapped in there. The last time I bought a cake (about September-ish of 2011), they mentioned having a few different frostings. They said that adults seemed to like the italian meringue more. Perhaps a suggestion for those who said they thought their frosting was too sweet. For the most part, I've been really pleased with the cakes I've purchased from FT. Most recently, my girlfriend bought me a birthday cake with a Costa Rican theme. The base of the cake was in the shape of a volcano with parrots and sea turtles around it. The decorations were really impressive! Unfortunately, the actual cake part didn't quite turn out. The owner Lara was very responsive and apologetic. We ended up getting store credit, which is fine because we will definitely be back again. As far as the price, they are comparable to other bakeries in the area. If you have a specific cake theme in mind, they really try to work within your budget. Cakes aside, FT is the is only place I've tried macaroons. They came out incredibly soft & melted right in your mouth. These small desserts are so delicate that they leave you craving for more. If someone had asked me prior to today if I recommended Fluffy Thoughts, I would have said yes in a heartbeat as they did our wedding and grooms cake, birthday and holiday cakes, and holiday pies over several years. After today - absolutely not! Previous loyalty means nothing. They have zero customer service now and will not give you the time of day at the slightest miscommunication. In my case regarding a simple cake order, their emails were going to my spam and I asked for a call back instead. When I did not receive it, I called the next day and instead of apologizing for a simple miscommunication and offering call back times, they doubled down with an attitude; were extremely condescending and said we were rude because we expressed frustration at the lack of a call back; made it seem like a favor that they even bothered to speak with me; and then hung up and ignored my calls! Hanging up because you don't want to deal with a customer's issue is the definition of rude! This is how a long time customer that gave 6+ years, referrals, and several thousands of dollars of business gets treated.
