I figure if i think they're good, then they must be good. When I went, there was no business, definitely down time. The employee who came out kind of didn't seem that interested in selling me a cupcake. There is hip hop music being played which seemed a little odd for the atmosphere. I ordered the banana cupcake. It was good sized, larger than the ones you bake at home, and it was good. I actually enjoyed it to a point. So therefore, I guess I would recommend it. Fortunately I don't live near a Fluellen Cupcakes because I visited here several times in my short stay in Dallas and I would probably visit here a lot more often that I should if there was one in Chicago. The cupcakes here are fantastic -- the texture of the cake is perfectly fluffy and moist while the cream has the perfect consistency. The flavors are distinct and bold, while showing good refinement in bringing out the theme. The shop is beautifully decorated with amazing aromas of cupcakes filling the air and the service is friendly, quick, and helpful. TL;DR - Fluellen Cupcakes was underwhelming. I was craving a sweet treat and love to support local bakeries as opposed to franchises as much as possible. The location is downtown Dallas so parking was limited, and for that reason, I expected a wait, but to my surprise, no guests were here, just the employees (this should've been a cue for me, but decided that maybe everyone had already got their cupcakes earlier in the day. The establishment itself is clean; however, it could use an updated look in my personal opinion. The woman working was kind; however very minimal in regards to customer service experience. She said "welcome in" & asked me how she could help, but lackluster in regards to enthusiasm. I'm not expecting a spectacle, but a smile or inflection in her voice would've gone a long way. I ordered a carrot cake cupcake and asked for what she would recommend, as they have a large variety, to which she answered "they are all good". I have no problem with confidence in your products, but you should always have a recommendation or 2 even if it's just "this one is seasonal/limited time so you should get it while it's here". So to that, I went the safe route and ordered a red velvet cupcake as the second. When I get to check out, they ring up as $6 each which is not awful for the size & being bakery fresh; however, it is a little on the pricier side, but I assumed that must mean they are REALLY good to be worth that price tag. The cake was dry, the frosting had a slight grit to it, and while I'm not a baker, I can confidently say I could've made the same thing at home for less and with better depth of flavor and better texture. All that to say, I wouldn't tell someone not to go here; however, it also would not be my first recommendation nor would I recommend going out of your way for it. read more

November 2021 - COVID Review: The staff was really nice and patient with us as we decided on our cupcake selections. I liked that they had a glass case that showed the current flavors they had. The cupcakes are pretty pricey for their size in my opinion. But there aren't a ton of dessert options on the downtown strip so I guess that's why they can raise their prices. I really wanted to like the cupcakes but they were way too sweet for my taste. The icing on the cupcakes tasted like straight up sugar and the cake part luckily wasn't as sweet, which helped to balance it out a little. In town for the USA Junior National Volleyball tournament. Four cupcakes were purchased, put in the company's four slot cupcake container box and then into a bag to carry.
