Best tres leches cake in the DMV area. My friends have been buying cakes from Flowers Bakery for the last 10 years. Every year they get a tres leches and chocolate cake for their birthdays and they have been consistently delicious. Tres leches is my favorite, but their other flavors are also just as good depending on your taste. Their mango mousse cake is light and airy, and my aunt said the mixed fruit cake was "not too sweet" aka delicious in old Asian auntie language ;) read more

First of all, I had no business driving to get cheesecake in the first place but I was craving. I really wanted a piece a cheesecake and at this point to hell with diet restriction. I walked, knew what I wanted and nice woman behind the counter was quick and fast. Everything looked great. I'm not a "sweets" person BUT my kid is so I may buy her birthday cake from them. Double chocolate. Anyway I got home, wasted no time and inhaled this piece of pie? Is it a pie or cake? Idk, idc. It was soft, and NOT too sweet. Like barely sweet, just enough. Now if you like sweet cheesecake, you may not thinks it's enough, but me? Man heaven...strawberries were an added sweetness. Yum. I'll bring my nugget there as a little treat. Cons: it's kind of pricey. 4 something I believe for a slice. read more

After some initial confusion on whether a cake reservation was or was not needed (on the phone told not needed, in person told was needed), the tiramisu cake was available at the selected pickup time! The taste was sweet but not overly so, the texture was much softer than anticipated (but immensely enjoyable), and everyone who tried it, loved it! read more

Fresh, fruity mousse, decadent chocolate, creamy tiramisu - all expertly made cakes. Seriously impressed by this bakery and the level of skill that they put into every baked good, down to the smallest detail. Really love the raspberry mango mousse cake. From the first look at it, I'm excited. Then the first bite is so satisfying - the sponge cake layers are moist and just the right balance of sweetness. The mousse is light and fluffy and flavorful. Even the fruit on top stayed fresh for hours. Will absolutely keep coming back for more! read more

Delicious strawberry shortcake cake. We will definitely be back for another. We ordered it fresh 2 days before and picked it up early the day of our party. Guests were having seconds. :) read more

Ok! So, I brought this cake on Saturday for my son's 25th birthday...man was it an Ordeal getting this cake. So first off let me state that I got this cake based off of the reviews...I had used them in the past for my son's high school senior night but I didn't taste anything...so it was all about the reviews. I called to see if they had any strawberry shortcakes before going over there...they did, I get there they have none...the older lady behind the counter was rude, told me they wouldn't have any until tomorrow then she dismissed me...let me also state that they helped a Spanish couple who was before me but behind another woman they bypass both of us to help them but we're not going to get into that; This is about the cake. so after she told me that they didn't have any they would get it tomorrow I left she didn't ask if I wanted anything else she just dismissed me. so I get home and I decided to order one and pick it up the next morning before work, the young lady who answered the phone told me they just got some strawberry shortcake in...so I head back across the street...The cake was very beautiful; my son was pleased when he saw the cake...I had a piece tonight...let me tell you, the cake was dry...it was pretty though, the strawberries were fresh and had a candy coating...the cake just wasn't it for me...it was just dry...Probably won't go back...you'll definitely have to try it for yourself read more

I drove 1 hour round trip just to buy a mango mousse cake and a strawberry cake for my parents' joint birthday today - for a very healthy conscious crowd where most people don't even eat cake and they usually split a half of a half of a slice .... they took seconds, thirds and the mango mousse cake was gone within 20 minutes! It was exactly like most people described - a light, not too sweet cake! I only had to order 1 day in advance and it was ready by 10am for me to pick up! the mango mousse cake is so worth the drive and the money, overall experience was great! read more

I call it Western sweets vs Eastern sweets and this place is def an Eastern sweets kinda place. Mango mousse cake was light, airy, and the mousse was still frozen when our party of 20 dug in several hours later. It's not a heavy-sweet cake and it's different than the norm chocolate and vanilla, so it's def worth if it you're wanting something different. read more

The Key Lime pie alone is worth the trip. Picked up Tres Leches and Pastel de nuez. Each item looks beautiful and tastes like a flavor party!!! Loved this bakery. Went to grab a few slices to try and bring to friends later that night. Went in mid-afternoon and they were still fully stocked. Got a variety and have only good things to say. I wanted to try the tres leches because of all the reviews and was torn between the original and the caramel. I went with the original and we chose 4 more. Unknowingly the worker added in the caramel as well without charging which worked out great since that was my friends first choice. The original was very moist and flavorful, definitely worth all the positive reviews! My friend loved the caramel tres leches. Boyfriend tried the cookies&creme mousse and really enjoyed it. Also got a few slices of the cheesecake that was very creamy! Staff was very attentive to everyone in the shop and very kind. Worth the drive! read more

Literally been there 3 times, each time a disappointment. 2 times the person behind the counter did not even acknowledge me, for 10 min each, talking with another customer who was indecisive about what pastry they wanted. 3rd time I went in, no croissants, nothing savory. Not worth the time--save yours. read more

This place is AMAZING. We have been twice only because it is so far from where we live, but this year for my birthday I requested a cake from here, even though it was a 45 minute drive one way. I got the strawberry chocolate cake and it was AMAZING...LAYERS OF MOUSEE AND CAKE and so delicious!!! Everyone had two slices minimum. The first time we went here, we went after our wedding, with a part of 15 people, and everyone LOVED what they ordered...we ordered a huge variety of cakes, and also french fries. Both were EXCELLENT!! And the people who work there are WONDERFUL! So friendly and helpful. I want my birthday cake from here every year - love it! read more

The Flowers Bakery Cafe is a small little bakery that is located in a strip mall off of Layhill. The menu consists of coffee, espresso, specialty cakes, danishes, gelato, and even breakfast sandwiches. The hubs and I stopped by to check this place out, as we were in the area. I ordered: an almond horseshoe, dipped in dark chocolate (this one had a very syrupy-sweet coating, and it was a little too much; the horseshoe itself was not flake-y or cookie-like, and it was more like a wet almond cookie); an apple flan cake (this was pretty tasty, as it had thinly-sliced apples on top; the cake itself had a more dense flan-like consistency; the slice itself wasn't too sweet); and, a Paris Brest (a puff pastry filled with cream and sliced strawberries, this was pretty good; I just wished the puff pastry itself was more delicate and flake-y; the sliced strawberries could have also been more fresh, as there was some slight bruising and browning. Service was a hit-or-miss, as the staff seemed to be reluctant in letting you know what they have in their bakery case (there are no labels). There were a couple of bistro tables inside, but it seems as if the patrons get their orders to-go. Plenty of parking in the shared plaza lot. +apple flan cake slice +hit-or-miss service +available parking in plaza lot read more

Picked up an array of slices of cake for my daughters 18th bday from this spot. The slices of cake were really good in size and decorations were perfect. I mostly liked the fresh fruits and the glaze. It's a bit pricey cause I'm use to buying my cakes at Sam's club, but it was worth the taste. It's definitely going to be one of my new spots. Customer service was great as well, which is huge to me. Good cakes, good customer service and a pleasant experience over all. My daughter was happy and so was my tummy! I needed last minute birthday cake for my husband and I hate the grocery stores cake that's covered with overly-sweet and waxy frosting, so I decided to come to this store. They have many different kind of cakes and they all look amazing. I decided to get the fruit vanilla shortcake. The lady helped me decorate with the happy birthday writing which came out beautifully. They also have candles and other bakery items like bread and pastries. The party went great, everyone love the cake, it's very airy, soft, flavorful, the fruits were fresh, and not so overwhelmingly sweet. Parking is easy and within a big strip mall area. I would recommend this place for your cake needs, will try the pastries next. read more

I love tiny hole in the wall places. They don't rely upon snazzy signage or amazing decor to get business. They rely upon amazing food that will make you yearn for more. Flowers Bakery and Cafe is one of those places. It's a tiny hole in the wall that is behind the Sunoco gas station in the Layhill Shopping Center. My brother (the world's biggest foodie), discovered it one day - and my family of non-dessert eaters - are now sworn loyal customers that won't get their pastries anywhere else (my mother-in-law is a baker, and my mom wouldn't let her make the cake for the rehearsal dinner - it HAD to come from Flowers. Yes - THAT's how good it is). My family's favorite is the Mango Mousse. Upon first delicious bite, the fluffy mousse fills your mouth with dreams of lush mango-filled tropical getaways. Every bite will make you wish for more - and it carefully walks the line of sweetness, so that you will remain tantalized and not sickened. The cake base, although often overlooked in the ripe full flavor of the mango, is what makes this cake so successful. It's lightness of flavor is the perfect counterbalance to the mousse and gives it the perfect pedestal to shine. My personal favorite is the tiramisu. While I admit to having a fond weakness for all things tiramisu, their tiramisu is the last word in tiramisus. The base is rich with rum, however, it does not get weighted down and soaked to a point of sogginess. The filling is light and fluffy without any hint of greasy slickness. The dark cocoa powder adds just the right note of bitter richness that offsets the sweetness of the cake - --- well, it's quite evident I can wax poetic for days on end about their cakes. But in a nutshell, they are extremely good. The decor in this bakery is sparse, parking can be messy, and the staff is polite but very wooden. Ignore these small annoyances, because this bakery is really worth it. It's one of those secrets that everyone keeps, because we're all afraid that if they get too popular, they may run out when we need a fix! read more

Best cakes. The chocolate flakey cake is my family's go-to for birthdays/ celebrations!

I've been a longtime customer of Flowers but I only recently placed an order for a custom cake for the first time. The pastry chef took the time to sit down with me to hear me out and offer suggestions. The staff has always been really warm and friendly. I was extremely please with the cake (see picture) and everyone at the reception loved it. Many people asked for the name of the Bakery. Everyone loved that the cake was moist, cold, and the frosting was not too sweet. 5 stars, without a doubt. read more

Flowers Bakery Cafe smelled of deliciousness when I stepped foot in the door. My mouth seriously started to water! They had a fair amount of cakes ready to go and a bunch of mini assorted pastries/cake slices/baked goods in their cases. I couldn't decide between the chocolate eclair and bread pudding (one of my favs!), so I asked the guy behind the container which one he recommended. Of course he didn't give me an answer and said both are tasty. Come on now, give me your opinion...you know I'm going to purchase at least one of them! I decided on the chocolate eclair since it seemed to be calling out my name more. Hmmm...maybe I should have got the bread pudding instead. I was over it in two bites...wasn't into the filling. Although I didn't quite enjoy my dessert, I'd go back to try another mini dessert or even purchase one of their cakes for a special occasion. We were having dinner company and needed to pick up something for dessert so we decided to try Flowers Bakery. We got there on Saturday afternoon and there was still a large selection of cakes, pies, some cookies, and other sweets. There were a few people in the shop, including a couple browsing through an album of cake photos (planning a wedding maybe?). We decided to try a few slices of different desserts and selected white chocolate, Grand Marnier, chocolate mocha cakes, and key lime pie. They were all fresh and very good, though I can't say I noticed much difference between the Grand Marnier and the chocolate cakes. I thought the best of the 4, maybe because I don't like things too sweet, was the key lime pie, nicely tart and exceptionally good. They don't have any breads or rolls, and though they have breakfast sandwiches "as of now" no other meal options. The staff was pleasant and said that everything is baked in house. We don't need desserts for everyday meals but will go back when we need something for dinner guests. read more
