Under the sea is a great retreat from the daily grind. I was Padi certified earlier this year and we all took a big group trip to the Keys. I experienced my first ocean dive through the Florida Keys Dive Center and thanks to them, my "mermaid experience" was even better than I imagined. We had a fantastic and knowledgeable captain and guides who took us to the best reefs! We saw gorgeous coral, a few nurse sharks and other small sharks, several rays and the ever elusive moray eel. The cost was around $80 per dive, not including tips. Tip your captain and crew please! They're deserving of it, I promise. It was a fantastic experience and I highly recommend giving them a call if you're looking to dive in the Florida Keys. read more

PLEASE DON'T CHOOSE THIS DIVE SHOP! Worst diving experiences ever. The staffs are very rude to customers; The dive guide leaves divers in DANGEROUS / LIFE-THREATEN situation; The dive shop CHEATED on customer for calculating tips; They sell broken rusted used accessories for a ridiculous price. 1)the dive guide Laura never waited & checked the number of divers in her group. We have a group of 6 divers (divided to 3 teams) for the Lobster hunting. Lobster hunting requires quite amount of time on concentrating on inspecting each coral hole, it's very easily to lose the sight of the dive guide with low visibility(20ft) situation. However she never waited for divers when we are hunting. It turns out that every single team got lost in the ocean, and she never realized and even turn around to check if divers is following her or not. This is very dangerous and life-threaten situation to divers. 2) They CHEATED on tips and INDUCED my friend to pay a unreasonable amount of tips($170) before our trip started. We bought extra gears from the store before the trip, they even COUNTED the tips on the products we purchase in the store. 3) Sell broken rusted accessory with a ridiculous price. I lost my regulator first stage yoke screw on the boat, they sold me a broken rusted one for $50(a new one only sold for $30 online), or asked me to rent this screw for $20 for the single trip. However they offer a full gear(bcd+regulator) rental for $25 on their website. 4) the air in the tank seems to be polluted(everyone's air is smelly), we asked the staff to check if the air is OK, they are impatient and being irresponsible on checking the air. read more

The Florida Keys Dive Center in an amazing place to go out on- or under the water! Scuba Joe and the rest of the crew make you feel like family, and know how to keep all of the landlubbers safe while having the time of their lives. We went out to a few different sites and were able to see a bunch of fish and even a couple sharks! I actually got my open water certification dives completed during this time and couldn't have asked for more fun! For those who weren't certified scuba divers, they give you the option to snorkel, though the water is a bit deep to fully enjoy that experience. On the ride back, the crew cut up fresh oranges and pineapple for us to enjoy. I'm typically not a big fan of either fruit, but they sure tasted amazing after being in the saltwater all day! I spoke with Ilene who convinced me to hire a guide for my brother and I due to the relative length of our most recent dives and the additional cost was well worth it. After our 5:30am departure from Miami we made it to the dive center which was about 1.5 hours drive. Still had plenty of time to get our gear, meet our friendly guide Mike and board the Pelican, a sizable boat which would take us to our two locations: Spanish Lady and Horseshoe---dive sites about 15-20 minutes from the Dive Center. Before departing, Mike helped us select our correct weight, buoyancy control device, regulator, wet suit, and fins/mask. We also attached our bcd and regulator to our tank. The plan was for two dives lasting 45 minutes each at depths of no more than 30 ft. It was my brothers 5th dive and perhaps my 20th. I know I'm supposed to log all of my dives but if you've been diving since 1996 you tend to think this is secondary. Mike was also helpful in switching our gear in between each dive which really cool. Aboard the Pelican and en route to the dive sites there were captains briefings, role counts, and also Mike talked us through hand signals, and prepared us for the dives. The crew had fresh pineapple and orange wedges cut after both dives. The day started as overcast, and while it did rain in the morning, the weather cleared up. While I write this I also recall a number of dive shops had canceled due to weather, which sadly was unfortunate for them. Visibility was 50-70 ft and got better as the sun came out. We saw nurse shark, Florida lobster, numerous fish, eel, miniature shrimp, conch, and star fish all with the skillful help of our guide Mike who knew how to coax and locate the various species. The reef was fantastic and healthy. Mike has been diving for 14 years and been instructing for 10. He really was helpful during our dive. Unfortunately, I decided against doing my second dive due to a sinus infection that had been creating pressure on various cavities within my cranium which hurt. My ears cleared fine, but the sinuses in parts didn't. My brother on the other hand initially had trouble with his ears but managed to clear them and had a great time on both dives. The Pelican has place to sit near the captain upstairs and on the main deck. She's a fantastic vessel built for diving excursions like the one we went on. The captain also did a great job navigating the waters. I highly recommend booking at trip with them should you have the opportunity. read more

I can't speak highly enough about Florida Keys Dive Center. I have been to over 5 dive shops in the area and by far this is the best dive shop and here is why: - the crew inspected all of our gears before diving and they have actually put everything together (I have seen few accidents during my trip at other dive shops). At other shops, expect that you'll just be thrown in the water without any inspection or help. - Everyone at the shop was extremely professional. Unfortunately, I got my Advanced certification at another dive shop in the area where the staff seemed like they hate what they are doing and are really impatient. They clashed with few customers because of their attitude. However, here, as soon as I asked the lady at the front desk about the more advanced courses, an instructor came out of the back room and started explaining the procedure and what to expect next. There are dozens of dive shops located in the Upper Keys, and Florida Keys Dive Center (better known as FlaKeys) has always been one of my favorites. FlaKeys is a PADI 5 Star Career Development Center & Dive Resort which means that they have reached the highest-level of credentialing and are held to the highest possible standards by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. As a 20-year member of PADI, I always seek out 5 Star Centers when I am diving FlaKeys is located just south of Key Largo in the little area known as Tavernier. The shop is visible from the main road, but sits on Freelan Road, or the Old Highway. There are several small diver hotels in the area as well as a commercial fish market, a marina, and several small restaurants. In general, this is a sleepy part of the Keys, which means less tourists and a better diving experience. The retail store for FlaKeys is large and fully stocked with dive equipment for purchase or rental, plus t-shirts and other touristy items. The main shop also serves as the training center with classrooms for novice divers. If you're not certified then you can choose to take your basic certification, or advance all the way into the professional ranks at FlaKeys. Tom Timmerman built his dive business staring in the mid 80s, and he has the reputation of excellence in customer service, diver safety, and protection of the underwater environment. Lots of dive clubs and groups travel to FlaKeys to dive with Tom's team, so don't be surprised to see groups of people from the South and Midwest who have made the journey for an extended dive vacation. The shop has several custom dive boats that chug along the canal and out to the ocean to a wide variety of dive sites in the region. The boat's Captain will select the dive sites based upon that day's weather conditions and the requests of the crowd. Generally you can plan to dive wrecks such as the Spiegel Grove, USCG Duane, or the Eagle along with some popular reefs such as Captain Tom's Ledge, Crocker Wall, Davis Reef, Hens and Chickens, and Molasses Reef to name a few. I suggest that you book your diving plans in advance, and make sure that you mix up the wreck and reef dives, as well as a night dive or two. The dive shop can handle your rental equipment needs as well as air fills in between the dive trips. PADI Training - John Burton was the PADI Instructor for my 19 & 14 yr old boys. John did a great job connecting with them and made the learning process fun. Dive Boat - For sport divers, the experience on the boat and in the water is key. The Florida Keys Dive Center has two 46' custom Newton Dive Boats. This is the best boat I have dove from ever. They have a well organized process and everything you need was planned in advance. The crew are all mature and well trained divers that are looking out for your safety and dive experience. My family and friends were supposed to dive out of the Islamorada Dive Center but they had boat issues. Eric, the owner, had us dive out of his other location and I have to say the crew were incredible. While things were crazy for them, they bent over backwards to make sure that we could get all of our dives in for the week for the 6 of us. We felt they took special care with us which made me feel great because we had my 14 year old daughter and her friend who is 13 and freshly certified. The guides we had were excellent. Brad, Chad, Alison, and Nate are amazing. Chase drove the boat and was funny but very professional. Although they didn't guide is, Ann, Doc, Charlie, Matt, and Bobby were also extremely helpful when getting gear ready and we're really fun to talk to. read more

I felt like Cinderella! I had the most wonderful snorkeling experience! I went last week with my husband and brother-in-law. I'm 70 years old and this was my first time in the ocean snorkeling. We were greeted by Yvonne and a very friendly dog (bring treats!). There were 5 of us and Capt. Carson and BRAD. Both crew members were extremely concerned about the environment. You have to have the correct sun screen or you can kill sea creatures. They are both CPR certified which made me feel very safe. Capt. Carson took us to the first site and it was time to get my flippers on. I couldn't get the stupid things on. BRAD came right over the slipped them on my size 10 feet. I followed the instructions on how to get into the water. The waves were frightening for a newbie. 15 minutes later I was done. Now, you have to hold on to the rope, take off your flippers and then get on the ladder. If I couldn't get them on, I certainly couldn't get them off. BRAD jumped in fully clothed and took them off so I could get up the ladder. My husband & I waited for the 3 other snorkelers, who were loving the water, to come on board and off we went to another site. I'm gonna do it again. This time with a noodle. BRAD helped me with the flippers again. I thought I could walk 2 steps to clean my googles but I stepped on said flippers and fell on my kiesta. After I stopped laughing I looked up and there was BRAD (& my husband) to help me up. I wasn't as scared this time and was able to see sharks and lots of fish. I lasted half hour and when I got to the boat there was BRAD to help me again. As we headed in BRAD had pineapple and oranges cut up for us. There is no food or drink on sale but you can bring whatever you want on board. We found this little grocery store across the road that made the best sandwiches. If you want to go snorkeling this is the place. They treat everyone with respect and dignity. I can'r say enough about Florida Keys Dive Center. read more

Got a confirmation of our reservation for scuba dive a day before our trip to Florida Keys Dive Center from St Pete Florida. Planned our day out, got there at the time instructed. Just to be told there was no boat going out because of the weather changes. Very unprofessional with no sorry at all. All that 5 hours of driving for nothing. My son decided to give another chance to this place and scheduled the trip to the following weekend. We went back again next week. My son enjoyed his cube dive experience. He forgot his goggles in the boat called the office. They got all his credit card information and assure that they will send googles shortly. Unprofessional and poor reef choices for scuba based on the fact that there were lobster fishers on the boat who, though outnumbered, were catered to over the divers. Waste of money and wished we would have stopped in key largo on this trip instead. Have been snorkeling and diving all over the world and I would not have normally even bothered to dive what they were calling "spanish reef". Check out captain slates diving in key largo instead. Better winter specials and much more professional. Much better reefs to dive on also. Like John G says if you want to feel like a princess, or even better just feel like the crew cares about making a tip by helping you at any stage of the trip, then this is not the place for you. Affectionately known as "FlaKeys", this place is a great little facility to take either a snorkeling trip or a scuba diving trip. The dive shop & boats are housed nicely together at the end of a canal that connects to the waterway for quick and easy access They have two 46' boats so they have the capacity to take groups of people to reefs, wrecks, or maybe even do a little spear fishing or lobstering. Each boat can easily hold 25 people and both boats are surprisingly stable (for those who are prone to seasickness). The captain, who looks like he just walked down to the keys from Boone, and the entire staff was very friendly and informative... a good group of folks. Flakeys, a PADI 5 star facility, also rents everything that you might need... from BC's to regs to tanks, lights, etc... Nitrox is also available. They have a "dive locker" on site to stow your gear if you're doing multiple dives over a couple of days.... might I suggest going on a night dive as well, the reefs are fairly shallow (less than 20') and have an abundance of marine life. The rates are very competitive since there are dive shops/boats around every corner down there. Me, being the consummate cheap-ass, brought my own tanks & weights and my 2 wreck dives on the Spiegel Grove & The Duane only cost me $60.00 Bottomline: if you want to have a pleasurable diving/snorkel experience, then I highly recommend Flakeys! Good times, good people, good fun~ Remember people... this is diving, if you idea of diving is: - having people assemble/disassemble your gear for you. - the crew carries your gear to and from the boat for you. - sitting in an air conditioned cabin until time to dive. - having someone pack your gear for you after you're done diving. then Flakeys is NOT for you Princess. read more

If you get seasick, this might not be the trip for you. We went out on a snorkeling trip with a huge group of people - all ages, all fitness levels (it was a family/wedding group and we took up the entire boat) - and the water was quite rough that day: white caps and choppy once we got out there. We went to two different reefs to snorkel. Honestly, one reef would have been plenty for this particular group. After we got out to the second reef, about half the boat (possibly more) were feeling ill. One person threw up. The water was very choppy and sitting on the boat was really not an option because it just made people feel sicker. While I had a nice time overall and the snorkeling was fun, this wasn't what I'd call an amateur's snorkeling trip. I've done other snorkeling trips in smooth, calm water (no chance of seasickness) and that was far preferable. Also, it would have been great (and possibly helpful) if they'd offered some wine or at least some ice cold waters at the end for the trip back. I've had that on other snorkeling trips and it's a welcome treat. They didn't offer any drinks at all. You have to bring your own. I think this is really more of a scuba diving company and if you're more of a hardcore water person (and definitely a diver) this would be a good crew for that. However, if you're bringing along your 70+ year old relatives from Europe or your 10 year old cousin from Jersey, it might be better to look into a more mellow type of company that will make sure you're not just safe but comfortable, too. read more

I've had great experiences with the dive training part of Florida Keys Dive Center, affectionately referred to as "FlaKeys." I took my Instructor Development Course there in 2009, I later insisted my big sister take her IDC there a few months ago, and then I joined her to take the Master Scuba Diver Trainer course in October 2011. I did my instructor development course with six other diver friends from North Carolina, and it was the best training I could've hoped for. FlaKeys worked with our group to find the best time for the course that worked with all of our schedules and then helped us find affordable accommodations on top of that. The instructors and the charter captains are all very professional and extremely knowledgeable. It was a demanding course, but because of that, I felt fully prepared when we took our final exam with the PADI official. Every single person in my IDC passed with high marks! I was so satisfied with FKDC and am still so convinced they are the best in the area that I insisted my big sister go there to take her IDC only a couple months ago! She was very pleased with her time there and was of the same opinion once she made it to her instructor exam: At the final exam, you can spot a FKDC-trained instructor candidate right off the bat. They are the students who confidently handle everything the test administrator throws at them. I will continue to tell everyone I know to go to FKDC when they ask about instructor training (or any training down that way, really)! But for those who aren't looking to take a course, but just want to find a good dive operation with which to do some diving, I thought I'd post about my other "fun diving" experiences with FlaKeys. I did a week's worth of dive chartering with my friend and sister a couple months ago and was once again very happy with my time there. If you're looking for a dive organization to take you out to the local sites, whether they're wrecks or reefs, you will be very pleased with the level of service you'll receive at FlaKeys. Their prices for rental gear, training, merchandise and charters are all very competitive for the area, too. The shop has two large, well-kept and clean dive boats that are easy to maneuver on with all your gear. They provide water for you on the boat and big coolers in which you can store your own drinks or other foods. For those bringing cameras, there are the necessary freshwater buckets and dry tables you can use. FlaKeys has a nice selection of rental gear, including everything from BCDs and regs to masks, snorkels, fins and wetsuits, in case you don't have your own. For those who have their own gear and are planning to do more than one dive trip, there is a secure guest locker with plenty of room to store you things. The people working on your boat help you with your gear if you need it, load your rented tanks onto the boat, provide a great dive briefing about the sites you visit, help you in and out of the water, give you tips for your dive plans, and provide a refreshing selection of cut fruit after your dives to help with the inevitable salty-mouth divers get. There is also a selection of drinks and snacks inside the shop if you find yourself a little hungry or parched before/after your dive trip. Not only did I have have a great time diving the countless sites to which they have access, but I'm able to relax, knowing I'm in competent hands with the FKDC employees. I would trust everyone there to calmly and effectively respond to a dive emergency if need-be, so I can just chill and have fun. Oh, and if you're trying to decide where to stay while you're down there, it's also worth asking FlaKeys about any accommodation recommendations. I was working with a tight budget, and it was important for me to have a kitchen. They connected me with a couple, who rents out the apartment attached to their house for a very good, budget-friendly deal. Without a doubt, I'll be going back--again! read more

We did four days of diving with them, very friendly and capable folks. Captains Carston and Burt were great, really enjoyed our diving with them. We needed some gear serviced, they were very upfront about what they could and couldn't do for our very old gear (and referred us for what they couldn't). We came down to do a couple of days of diving in the Keys. The folks at Florida Keys Dive Center met all our needs and expectations. The staff of the shop are knowledgeable and attentive. As an added bonus, the shop and boat are literally steps away from each other. They are a full service dive shop complete with rentals and sales. Also staff instructors. I will gladly dive with Florida Keys Dive Center again. read more

Having visited a few dive centers in Key West, I was less impressed with FKDC. The gear was less high tech, the crew less than helpful and no "Local expert" in the water. Needless to say, I chose to dive at another dive shop where I had previously been for another dive. FKDC did not impress. read more

Absolutely wonderful experience! I've been on dives with other dive centers, but this one was the best. Scuba Joe took great care of us on a recent five and certified my son for his open water certification. The reefs were jampacked with beautiful fish. Everyone (the staff) was very friendly and helpful. I will return! read more

This place is great! The dive instructors are very friendly, patient, and helpful. They love their jobs and are happy to be there. That's very rare to find anywhere! Scuba Joe! Is phenomenal!!! Highly recommended!!!! He helped me accomplish 4 specialty classes towards my masters! Looking forward to doing a night dive with him next! If your looking for someone who is super patient, calm and friendly I recommend Cory. He helped out with a refresher course for one person in our group.
