View of the lighthouse at alligator reef ball zero. The water was awesome!

We enjoyed a fantastic week of diving with Key Dives. They emphasize reef conservation and safety and are professional in a fun, easy-going environment. On scheduled days, divers can participate in special activities they have going on through I.Care and REEF. They tagged our gear the first day and then kept it there for the week. We would walk onto the dive boat and it would be waiting for us. We really appreciated this aspect of their service. It made for a much more relaxed vacation. Each member of the staff we met was friendly and helpful. Each group of six divers has a dive guide in the water to point out marine life you might otherwise miss. The health of the coral formations and abundance of marine life we encountered was exceptional. We dove July 2022 and the visibility was very good most of the week with very calm water and just a bit less clear the last two days the water had a bit of chop at the surface and slight surge below water. Some of the marine life we saw included: Green Sea Turtles, Nurse Sharks, Stingrays (Southern, Yellow), Crabs (Arrow, not sure of names on others), Shrimp, Queen Conch, Jellyfish (1 only), Flamingo Tongue Snail, Sea Anemone, Sea Urchin (Black, White), Angelfish (French, Gray, Queen, Rock Beauty), Boxfish (Honeycomb Cowfish, Smooth Trunkfish), Butterflyfish (Banded, Foureye, Reef), Damselfish (Bicolor, Sergeant Major, Yellowtail, Blue Chromis, Brown Chromis), Eel (Green Moray, Spotted Moray), Filefish (Scrawled), Goatfish (Spotted), Goby (Various, not sure on all the names), Grouper (Black, Nassau), Grunt (Bluestriped, French), Jack, Parrotfish (Blue, Stoplight), Pufferfish (Balloonfish), Snapper (Schoolmaster, Yellowtail), Surgeonfish (Blue Tang, Doctorfish), Wrasse (Bluehead), Gray Chub, Great Barracuda, Spotted Scorpionfish, Trumpetfish and Yellowhead Jawfish. Shout outs to Misha and Nikki. Misha spent 5 minutes working with me on my weighting on the first day before I even got in the water. I dropped a huge amount immediately and later in the week, Nikki helped me drop even more weight on what turned out to be the best two dives of the week.

Did open water PADI certification last week. Eric, ( Erik, Erickque, Air-ick) our instructor was great. Very SAFE, patient, positive and a great communicator. Open water dives were great and Captain Brad made you feel at home and SAFE on the dive boat. Will be going back on next Key visit.

Nothing says relaxing than Diving with Key Dives

The most impressive business approach of Key Dives is that they dive with a purpose. Whether it is their Dive against Debris Program or their reef restoration through iCare. Also impressive is the collection of the most talented dive instructors I've seen in 35 years of diving. Justin Hannel was our lead instructor. He has a special gift of breaking complicated data down into understandable bits of information. Highly recommend Key Dives from Basic to Master Diver.

Really is as good as it gets. From the dive masters, owners and retail employees you'll feel welcome and ready to explore the Key's reefs. The pro shop has all the gear you could ask for with an extremely knowledgeable staff to help pick out what is right for you. Since we went down to get a few friends certified we really experienced how professional their staff is. The pool training was very thorough and expertly run and the following dives were nothing short of spectacular. Definitely looking forward to returning and expanding my training to explore what the Key's beautiful reefs have to offer. Thank you to Hayley, Emily, Jason, Captain Ken and Mike for an exceptional experience!

Beautiful day on the water with Key Dives!

Captain Jason is very safety forward and makes sure everyone gets on and off the boat securely. He is also so fun and always a pleasure to be on his boat. The instructors we dove with, KA, Tomos and Sonia were super patient and understanding of our different levels of experience. I was on my friends boat and we were doing some fishing about three hundred feet from the lighthouse. The fishing was good, yellow tail snappers were in huge schools and my friend was catching them without any wait or hesitation. I decided to jump in the water with my spear gun and take a few shots at the snappers. caught three and a small amber jack, My streak was brought to a heart stopping pause in minutes. I have been around sharks while diving and to be honest with you I am not scared of them. So i dive just a little above the school but remained mostly in the surface to get air (I was not diving with tanks). A huge bull shark came to the site. He was massive, I had never encountered such large animal on the open ocean. He was calm and collected for a while, just circling and acting very territorial. Suddenly something snapped and that beast became extremely possessive and went to a feeding frenzy. Everything happened so fast and I was able to witness first hand hoe aggressive this creatures can be. He destroyed halve the school of fish in one gulp. My friend was reeling in a yellow tail snapper, the shark swam on his back, flipped and gulped the fish without any hesitation, the line was instantly cut. The visibility was so clear that 40 feet of water seemed like 10. My friend saw the shark when he took his catch and the maneuvers that he did to get it. It was great to share the same story but from two different angles. I was scared for my life; Never have I had my heart beat so fast out of my chest, and certainly not for a fish. There is a first time for everything!!! Its incredible how their jaws can extend out of their mouths. The scariest part was when i turned around and my eyes were no longer seeing him, I could feel the scare as if i was being chased by him, So i changed my course and began swimming backwards toward the boat but keeping my eyss locked on the shark. My buddy was waiting for me,ladder down and ready to pull me onto the platform of the boat where i continued watching that monster destroy the rest of the school of fish. Lesson learned; Chum in the water stay out don't go spearfishing. This thing came out of nowhere, definitely a stealth master and one of the top predators in the ocean.

He was very accommodating in finding a day and time that worked for us, very hospitable, and had a great personality! Charlie texts you several times before the boat day, to make sure directions on everything are clear- I really appreciated receiving the EXACT directions with pictures and precise details. His "Tiki Tiki" boat was brand new and beautiful, and I enjoyed bringing our own drinks and snacks on the boat (he parks next to a food boat, if you'd rather buy food). The sandbar was a lot of fun, and Charlie brought many toys for us to play with on the water (kayak, rafts, beer pong table, noodles, etc). Definitely enough equipment to keep you busy for the day! The sandbar was a bit busy (even on a weekday), but he tried to find us an area where no one was blaring their music, so we could play our own. Charlie took several pictures and videos for us that he emailed us later in the week. I really enjoyed having all those, in addition to mine. Only constructive criticism I have, would be that I booked a half day "tour", and had mentioned going snorkeling and doing the catch/release of baby sharks. I was under the impression that was all set up as the plan for the day. However, we went straight to the sandbar and spent the day there; little bit of a letdown as we wanted to do other activities as well- other than that it was a great day! The water was clear, we saw some fish (and lots of dogs), and the weather was perfect- we had a great day with Captain Charlie!

Forever Young kept coming up in my online searches and conversations. When I talked to Captain Tony he came across as extremely knowledgeable and incredibly honest. The morning of my trip I met Captain Rob and Guide Luke at the Forever Young dock. They knew I wanted to go after Lion Fish. They are two consummate professionals that were 100% focused on making sure I had a great day. I confessed to them, I had never used a spear gun or a sling spear. Luke was not phased. While Rob prepared the boat, Luke grabbed a sling spear and gave me an impromptu lesson on how to use it. As we got underway, it became obvious to me these two guys knew the waters in the keys. We made three dives at three different spots. Each dive just blew my mind. Secretly I wanted to get two Lion Fish.... As we approached the bottom on the first dive we came upon six or eight of them bunched together. Five minutes into the first dive, my bucket list was fulfilled. We filled the Zookeeper during each dive. It was surreal. My wife, children, and friends knew the day I was going out with the Forever Young team. As we came back in, I started getting texts..... How did it go ? Did you shoot any ? Did you have fun ? I fired off texts with pictures of the 35+ Lion Fish Luke helped me find and shoot. Everyone was excited. It was a great day.
