Maybe I came on the wrong weekend but I was highly disappointed with my experience. First day, this area was closed for a private party. That was a fail. Second day, I expected a lot of people. I kept hearing about how they have great parties up here and how it's the best Sunday Funday. I was wrong. There were no parties and no Sunday Funday. There was just the pool and people tanning. The drinks are typical hotel prices and hotel cocktails. What upset me the most was the guacamole. It tasted like crap. How can guacamole taste like crap. That made me sad! Very hip rooftop bar at the Hard Rock -- love all the couches, lounging beds, fire pits and cabanas. Plus, it's great to be out in the open air, right in the heart of downtown, w/ all the city lights views at night. Fun vibe, and I don't get all the complaints about the staff. I've been here a few times over the past 5 years or so, and they've always been friendly to me. Yes - sometimes a wait to get a drink, but that's about it. And yes, the drinks are pretty pricey, but that's true of a lot of the places downtown (the bar downstairs has a good happy hour until 7 pm - might get a few drinks there first...). It's a great place for a private party. Was here for an office holiday party several years back which was fantastic, and again last night for an epic Yelp event. Look forward to coming back in the summer for a pool party. read more

I've only been to Float TWICE and honestly it's pretty nice. The first time I went was in early May and it wasn't quite packed (Intervention was starting the next day so I guess most others were savioring the moment for that) but it was still quite enjoyable. Mind you, both times I went was on a Saturday! The security guards are pretty cool, I haven't had any issues with them at all. If any of you read my other two reviews about the Belasco Theater in LA and Tavern in PB, you'll realize I seem to always run into trouble with security, and not even intentionally! So being treated respectfully is quite pleasant, always. They're pretty laid back, so it leaves the atmosphere refreshing without a hostile security trying to randomly distort the moment. Drinks are of standard price (by standard I mean "club prices") like other places around the block. Sadly I would have loved a Corona in a bottle, but instead I was served one in a CAN! Ha ha... It's cool, I can tolerate that. Besides going down to 207 and taking their glow stick thing just to bring it back up to Float to show off some dance moves with it, I like the setting and mood. It's very chill. If you like EDM music it'll be up your alley! Just keep in mind that there are a few firepit spots you can sit and enjoy at, but the downside is if you don't have bottle service you'll be quickly evicted for the group showing up after you that DID ordered it. I never knew this place was called Float until recently. I usually call it "that place on the roof of the Hard Rock. Yea, that one." You take the elevator up to the rooftop with a nice view of the convention center and some of downtown. It wasn't that full when I went there and the dance floor seemed to be this little section in the back. Float is mainly for lounging it seems which is fine by me because I like a crowd when I show off my Magic Mike moves. Bartenders are friendly and Vodka on the rocks is around $14 if that gives you any indication of drink prices. I stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel for a wedding, and I came to Float after the rehearsal dinner with about 15 other people. We sat in some of the open couches and enjoyed the beautiful view and each other's company. We were all having a great time and had been there for over an hour, when one of the bouncers came by and rudely told us we had to leave. I had heard rumors that the bouncers were very rude at the Hard Rock, but I didn't think it was true! There were no signs that the section was reserved, and we were never told by our server that we would need to leave at a certain time. We were all a very cooperative group, but I would have liked to see him be a little more diplomatic when "kicking out" a large group of people. With $10+ prices per drink, he just lot about $300+ worth of business for the bar. The next morning my boyfriend and I went to the pool at Float, for their big Sunday pool party. It was fun, but I'll tell it like it is: Jersey Shore!! From house music, to fist pumping, to trucker hats, it was all there. I had a great time, but beware if you're not into that scene. Overall, the service was not great, the drinks were incredibly weak (a straight 1 oz. pour), and the bouncers were rude. I would not recommend this place for a night out, only if someone wants a crowded pool party. read more

Mixed reviews here. We planned a bottle service for a bachelorette party so we planned to start early because we planned on ordering two bottles and one bottle of champagne. Our VIP/Table Service host told us FLOAT opened at 9 PM. We planned to meet our group ~9:30. We got to FLOAT and was told they were not opening until 10 or a little bit after. They were hosting a separate event that ran late. We were unable to contact our host and was in contact with another who told our group to go downstairs to 207 to "hang out" until FLOAT was open and our table would be available. They were nice enough to comp us a round of shot due to conflict of events. We were told by one of the host that FLOAT was open and our table is ready. Our group of 14 girls headed to FLOAT and upon arriving our table was not READY! There were stragglers left behind sitting in our area. All of them mind you were drunk from the previous event. One even hostile. We were told that security was called to clear them out of our area. We stood around for 15-20 minutes just waiting for this to happen. We had a set of servers one girl was very condescending and the guy was overly nice. I guess this balanced out. Our host was nice enough to call extra security so the male population at the lounge would not harass us a group of ladies. By this time it was nearly 11 PM. We came there with the intention of 3 bottles of drinks but to start 2 hours earlier to be able to finish our drinks. After some back and forward conversation we were able to order 1 bottle of liquor and 1 bottle of champagne and they also comped us another rounds of shots due to the inconvenience. Nice of them. In terms of extra security it lasted for the first hour we were there. As the night went on security was no where to be found. We just had to play our own security. The crowd at FLOAT was nice enough. Some of the ladies in our group went back down to 207 to dance. If you like more familiar songs to dance to lets say in hip hop then 207 is the place to go. FLOAT plays more house music. For some reason the crowd at FLOAT is better than 207. read more

The bar is beautiful...and how could it not be on a roof top in downtown SD. The cabanas are gorgeous. The couch areas comfy. And the pools, while small, are well placed and perfect for what they're supposed to be. The service, however was not up to the location's standard. Though, if you are happy to overpay for mediocre drink poured by a bartender with loads of attitude & banging bikini bod then I guess this is your place. I, however, would prefer stellar service and quality to reeeeeealllly low slung cut-off shorts & fake boobies in my face. And I guess I'd prefer to be surrounded by a crowd with more ambition than trying to book a reality show. But that's just me. By the crowds here, I think this is nice alternative to a strip club. The music was lame. The DJ was trying to pander to the lowest common denominator, obviously. Lots of Wacko Jacko, played to death 80's Top 40 & pumping noise with auto-tuned vocals. The bouncers, however, I found to be really nice, polite & helpful. I also caught them rolling their eyes at some of the clientele, which perhaps is what endeared them to me. Overall, I think this is the kind of place my underage niece would like to sneak into, but for the bar-goer expecting taste &/or class, it would probably be best for a private event without the wanna-be Vegas/Hollywood riffraff. read more

FLOAT, is I guess what they call it on Thursday nights?! I got an invite to come out opening night (6/25). If you know me I'm kinda over downtown. I rarely come out at night to party it up. But since I was gonna be in downtown already for a Shawne Merriman event at Stingaree, I decide to knockout two birds with one stone, and check it out right after the event. And plus it was only down the street! I've stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel before as a hotel guest. I was impressed by the set up of the lobby and the rooms. My first impression of FLOAT was the same, nice setup and spacious. FLOAT is on the 4th floor of the Hard Rock over looking Harbor Dr. and the entrance to the gaslamp. I've personally have never been to INTERVENTION on Sundays, but this is the same pool area that they use for that weekly shindig during the summers. I rolled in about 9:45, still kinda early, so the crowd was light. After 10 it started to fill up with people quick. The drinks were a little on the pricey side, I paid $7 for a draft beer and $11 for a Pinot Grigio for my friend. Yikes! But it's downtown...so I guess its fair?! Remember, its a Thursday! I expect to pay these prices on a weekend. Ok, whatever...I'm over it! I'm cheap! lol! Overall, FLOAT is a good place to lounge....if you can afford it. The music they play is more house and techno, than hip-hop. Good mix of people. Came here for the Sunday party this past weekend. Wasn't that it was actually bad but I found the service at this part of the hotel to be the worst. It may have something to do with the amount of business but all the bartenders looked like they were miserable. In fact the only one I remember smiling was the shot girl with the syringes. I visited three of the bars, one with the frozen drinks, this bartender looked like she just came from her own personal intervention and couldn't figure out what the hell she was doing with her life. The next bartender some dude with wristbands, um, so out, and a tribal tattoo, even more out, was totally in the weeds. He had about 8 guests waiting at the furthest bar away and looked completely slammed. He fumbled through orders, going to any guest in no particular order. I think this is why he was in the slower section. Probably a friend of a manager. The last bartender, a short red head, in the center of the chao slightly redeemed the staff. She managed a smile and and appeared to be more up beat. I also felt they jacked the prices up a bit too high for the event. $14? I had a hand crafted cocktail at Searsucker/Prohibition the night before for $12. I get it, it's a cash cow event but I mean come on, It's San Diego not Las Vegas and the drinks come in plastic keg cups. At least get fancy like they do at Rehab and give us the big tall cups. The first time I went there was for a friends birthday. The place was close to empty. Probably from the lame music they played and the over priced drinks. So many better places to go to in San Diego than this place. The crowd is random as well. Young & old, very diverse. By far the worst experience was based on Saturday night when myself and 4 others waited an hour for the guest list. They weren't letting anyone in. Finally when it came our turn they said the guest list was closed. We waited an hour in the guest list line where there was crazy smokey air coming from the vents of the restaurant Nobu. So we left the line smelling like greasy fried food and went to J6 instead. If you were to ask me if you should go there. I would say "HELL NO". Don't waste your time or money. Was surprised to see that this venue attracts some of the best DJs out there- Oakenfold, Robbie Rivera etc. Definitely going to come back for one of the Intervention Sunday parties! I went to Float last night for the first time thanks to a Yelp event. I love how spacious it is, there are so many different places for you to hang out. There are several fire pits and couches to accommodate the crowd. I liked that it had a nice bar area and huge windows with great views of the Gaslamp. The service was great and they played a great mix of music. Parking was really easy, there is a lot across the street that is only $1/hour. I definitely want to come back in the summer and check it out. read more

Came back this year to see Cosmic Gate on Intervention Sunday (April 29). They got a bigger and better stage with better lights. Everything else was the same. I always have an amazing time here. The staff & bouncers are respectful and nice. The actuall "club"/dancefloor is clean. The bathroom is clean as well and the attendant is very nice, not too long of a line to wait either. The drinks are strong but not cheap, and a huge plus is they still have the self dispensing water jugs so you don't have to wait in line at the bar just to get some water. Also, they have a coatcheck! so if you come with jackets & bags, just check it downstairs by the exit so you can have a great time dancing your butt off. All in all, I would continue to come back here for some good DJs and headliners. Love this club, always have a great time here on Intervention Sundays. read more

So we came here during our stay at the Hard Rock Hotel and it was on the rooftop so we obviously thought that was cool. Going in here was annoying. We went straight down to the pool area to be let in but security wouldn't let that happen. You have to go all the way down and find a promoter (only us because we wanted a table). Had to find the guy in front of 207. He took us all the way to another corner of the hotel. So we had to wait to basically get in. Security sucked major ass here. The line was super unorganized, people were freaking pushing and cutting in line and security weren't doing shit about it. Way to go. So we were led to the bottle service area. Our hostess was a lil pushy about us getting a magnum sized bottle but there was only 6 girls and we have tons of other alcohol in the room. Went for the cheapest bottle which racked up about $400. Not bad. Bottle service area sucks though because people can just come in and out as they please, even if they don't have bottle service. Then again, I noticed that majority of this place is served for bottle service purposes because it was like 75% of the lounge. The other parts of the lounge is just bar and a tiny dancing floor that nobody even dances to. Hostess made such strong drinks and basically wasted our alcohol. This place wasn't happening but at this our group had fun just enjoying everyone's company. I wouldn't chose to come here with my own free will though. read more

We came here twice; once during the day time to lounge around and again at night for a party. During the day, it was easy to find a place to sit on the couches and relax. The one waitress working was a bit overloaded so didn't take our order too quickly but we weren't in a rush. We also ordered some appetizers; the shrimp and some chips and guacamole. The shrimp appetizer was amazing. The shrimp were lightly breaded and fried on a bed of sliced vegetables, with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce. The drinks weren't very stiff but came in larger-than-normal glasses. The music wasn't too loud which made for a mellow spot to just relax and enjoy each other's company. We crashed there for several hours just taking in the sun, drinks and people watching. At night, we returned here again for a party and it was packed. It was hard to find a waitress, so heading straight to the bar yourself would be the best bet. Since it was outside, the noise level was still low enough to carry on conversations without screaming or leaning in. read more

My friends and I were planning on going to Room 207, also at the Hard Rock, but didn't realize that it was their one year anniversary....it was packed!! Instead we retreated upstairs to Float, which was a little less jammed with people. The lines were good, my girls and I got straight through with no cover. The only bad thing was the wait for the elevator, which took forever! The decor was nice and beachy, tiki torches, wicker chairs, cabanas and waitresses donning bikinis. My redbull vodkas were spendy, as expected, but very strong, which made up for it. The wasn't a lot of seating unless you were in VIP, which we managed to get into, or if you had a cabana. I would definitely come back here, both for intervention sundays and their regular nights, especially during the summer. read more

Horrible experience! Awful customer service! Me and my friend decided to meet for a couple drinks at Float rooftop at Hard Rock hotel. We have ordered drinks with the server, she was very nice. It was Friday night around 1am, when the server asked us if we want another round and that it was a last call. We ordered 2 more cocktails. 5 minutes later they brought us the drinks, turned off the music and turned the light on. Just FEW minutes later the security approached us and asked us to leave because they are closing. He was very rude. We said that we just got our drinks and have never been told that they will be closing at 1am (btw on there website it says they are closing at 2am) and asked him if we could have few more minutes to finish our drinks. (Of course if we knew that they will be closing in 5 minutes we wouldn't order another round of drinks!) He said no with a very bad attitude. He kept saying that he can't wait because he want to go home. Then the other guy came (not sure who he was, either another security or the manager) and said in a very rude and angry manner that we have to leave now. We explained him again that we just got our drinks, and that the server never mentioned that they will be closing in 5 !!! minutes, so we asked if we can have either few minutes to finish our drinks or have a refund for them, because we didn't even got a chance to start actually drinking them. He was extremely rude and said that he doesn't care and that we have to leave right now!!! Then he came very close to my friend and snatched the drink from her hand and spilled it all over my friend's dress!!! I was so in shock of this situation! I have never in my life been insulted and abused like this and have never had that extremely poor customer experience! They ruined our night and actually ruined my friend's dress!!! read more

A Saturday night out at Float. My first time here. This will be a very short review.. We a group of 7, went around 9pm or so. It wasn't very crowded yet, maybe a total of about 20-30 people there. There is a very large bar that wraps around the corner, and quite a few bartenders. Luckily since we were there early, getting a drink or prompt service was no problem. Also since it wasn't that busy, we were able to walk around the area a bit and take in some of the sights from the 4th floor it's on (I think it was the 4th) and it overlooks the San Diego convention center, and some of the high raises around the area. There are a number of heat lamps in a lot of areas, and some glass filled fire-pits too. So right now in San Diego where it's considered "cold," it's great there is a place to warm up. As the crowd started to pick up, I must say there were a lot of raunchy people coming in. Older women wearing clothes so tight, it must have to be cut off to be removed!? I'm not sure if these were Del Mar cougars, or what, but I think I gagged a little. Overall, a nice view for a roof top bar. Which there are higher rooftop bars I've been to, but the view here was a bit more open then say compared to the one at the W Hotel. read more

A big thanks goes out to VIP host Elijah S. for always answering my odd intervention questions promptly, and setting my group us nicely! The venue is a nice size with separation between the pool, and main stage; defenantly a nicer than any Vegas pool party set up. I recently went to Float with friends for a bachelor party. We had table service at one of the outdoor fire pits. We all had a great time. Awesome atmosphere, cool people and great service. Float has done it right when it comes to ambiance. The decor is clean, contemporary and not overdone. Being outdoors is great especially in San Diego. (No real views) The wait staff are bordering perfection both in looks and service. I would recommend table service at Float. The main bar is busy and unapproachable. CON: DJ was mediocre. Mixed feelings about this place. Sweet set-up, great vibe, good people. VIP area is almost bigger than regular area, almost to a fault. We had a group of people and asked about getting bottle service and could not believe what they wanted. 4 bottle minimum at $400 a bottle! In San Diego. WTF are they thinking? Vegas and Hollywood don't have a 4 bottle minimum on the busiest weekends. Was not surprised that the VIP area was dead most of the night. Later on, the host found us and offered us a table for 1 bottle but by that point we had a good spot staked out and declined. IMO music was terrible. House and techno all night long (which is not my thing). We asked for some hip-hop and the DJ told us "I don't play that crap". Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. That all being said, the place is sweet and had a good time. Was pretty easy to get a drink the bartenders were very cool. But if you want bottle service, make a reservation. Don't deal with the guy in the suit cuz you'll get drilled. read more

I've had some good times at Float which is why they get 3 stars instead of one. It's a nice layout except for Intervention...but more on that in a second. My chief complaint about Float is that it was once 80 degrees outside, a weekend, and Float was closed. The Hard Rock front desk just shrugged and said there wasn't enough business to justify it being open...yet every other pool club in San Diego is open? This told me that Float literally has no hours of operation and every visit was a gamble. Intervention...Half of Float is closed down for this event that happens every weekend during the summer. Why do they shut it down? The part they shut down includes all the seats. They want to make sure you pay to sit. So what about the dance floor? Possibly the ugliest dance floor in San Diego, looking more like the floor of a convention center than an upscale day club. It's a beautiful location, an amazing view and an incredible design. The bartenders I've experienced when I could actually get in, were awesome. One thing Float does right is there a number of Southern California trees In the club. Not only do they provide shade but they provide homes to beautiful song birds that sing along with the EDM music. Nature mixed with urban = city oasis. The clientele is definitely global. What Float really shines is for private parties at night. If you can get in one, this is probably the best place in San Diego to have one at. read more

I've only been here once. It was the last day of Intervention's 2010 season. My bff and I had literally just landed after a weekend in Vegas. LMFAO was DJ-ing. Got there around 2pm or so. I don't know if it was the fact that we both were still on a good one from Vegas or that the alcohol hadn't fully drained from or our systems. Maybe it was the fact that summer was officially coming to a close and we were attempting to grasp one of the last Sunday/Fundays of the summer. It could have been the fact that LMFAO puts on a great show and they were not short of the "hot mess" act (I'm talking pouring shots of Patron into the crowds mouths and licking on girls... well, you know). Whatever it was, Intervention was a great f-ing time. I seriously mean that. It's the perfect Sunday/Funday. Good drinks, albeit pricey. Fantastic music. Daygo weather. Beautiful people everywhere. Intervention was worth the massive hangover I had the next day. I think it took me about two full days to recover from that weekend but trust that we did it all again a few days later... well, sans Vegas and Intervention. If you come to 207 and need some fresh air, you can go up to this lounge in Hard Rock and still have some drinks. There is usually nothing special going on up here but still a decent place to chill. If you worry about waiting in line, you can always reserve your name online before and get in relatively fast. The drinks are mostly $10+ but I guess that's the usual for a downtown bar. The dance area in the lounge is pretty small and most of the time people just stand around talking and socializing. read more

Prime Location, rooftop pool at the Hard Rock Hotel. Who could hate right? The tree lit lanterns cast a chill, cool mood at night...which transforms to hot bare skin with the sun out. The drinks are pricey, but just as much as you would pay at Stingaree or Voyeur down the street and come as a DJ combo spinning the best in EDM. Not here. Just overpriced drinks, par service and a sweet ambiance. Nowadays even the Hard Rock needs to come harder than this. There are too many selections available that offer a whole lot more than a cool feel and rooftop venue. My hotel didn't have an outdoor pool, so I went over to Float for some sunbathing/swimming/drinks one afternoon. I was very disappointed. The pool is TINY and DIRTY. There was a sunscreen/oil film coating the top of the water and there was weird debris on the bottom of the pool. The space for sunbathing was limited as well -- maybe 5 or 6 lounges were actually in the sun (due to afternoon shadows from surrounding buildings) and all were taken. There are no other chairs other than the lounges, so I had to sit on the cement ground which was hot as hell. I stayed for maybe 10 minutes before leaving to get a patio drink elsewhere. Not the biggest venue, Since, there is barely any day clubs in SD over summer its definitely worth checking out over the summer. I came here here memorial day weekend in 2015 and enjoyed myself. It has a real Vegas vibe with its EDM music and young crowd. The pool is pretty small so i wouldn't expect to swim in it. However, there is plenty of walking space and seating areas. There are also cabanas that you can reserve that were spacious as well. Luckily, me and my group made friends with some people and were invited in to the cabana. Very cool area! Even though i dont remember much (a little too much kool-aid). It was a fun place and not expensive, i am pretty sure i only paid 10$ to get in on a Saturday. I would come back again! read more

Very cool looking venue. That's the only good thing I can say about this place. Short bald bartender called security on me because I told him he doesn't have to be a dick about me asking for a manager and waiting 25 minutes for one to show up after security was called on me. Yes, security will be called on you if you hurt their feelings. The security guard laughed at the reason with me, we laughed together at the bartender. I've been here twice, should have stopped after the first time. read more
