Flippoly is a quaint shop in UTC meant to be very Korean themed. Service was fine and you order on a screen and pay with tap. I don't know why they changed their bread, maybe to cut costs? Their sandwiches used to look very appetizing and now they look a bit dry. I got the rose tteokboki instead as it seemed to be a better option. Rose tteokboki (4/5): I was not expecting the flavor to be as good as it was, this blew me away. There was a nice level of spice that built in your mouth, a creaminess in the sauce, and I liked that you could swap out the rice cakes for noodles. The only complaint I have is that it comes with very little meat. I got meat on the side to share with my vegetarian friend, and it came with like 3 pieces of tiny bacon bits, 2 tiny sausages, and that was basically it. If I ever have cravings for tteokboki I would come back, don't think I'll try out their sandwiches though as it seems to have not so great reviews. read more

It is nice and convenient to have this as an option within literal walking distance of UCI. The place itself is super bare bones but at least you save on tip. You order at a kiosk, grab your own utensils and water, and throw out your own bowls and plates after. There's even a stack of takeout bags for customers to grab. The single staff member just fulfills the order and leaves it at the counter. As other reviewers have mentioned, the female employee isn't particularly warm and fuzzy but that's fine with me. The ramen here appears to be literally buldak ramen and shin ramen. The "mild" flavor shows no chili pepper icons next to it but if you can't handle spice, I would avoid. The K-style tteokbokki and udon is pretty spicy (two chili pepper icons) compared to some others we've had locally. It comes with fish cake and wide glass noodles. My fish cakes were a little dried out because of being overdone (or over reheated I should say). However, the other bowls for the rest of my group seemed to be fine. The flavor otherwise was good. Portion size is acceptable for the price. The udon was bouncy and cooked to perfection (not overdone or soft). The bulgogi bowl is totally not spicy so it's a good option for someone who doesn't want something spicy. It's not mentioned on the menu but it's served with a generous helping of roasted seaweed flakes on top. The portion was okay for the price but honestly, I think I prefer CA Gogi a few storefronts over which is somewhat similar in price but at least offers a choice of banchan to make your bowl more interesting. The bread was super thin, which im fine with, the toasting was visibly there but it had no crisp which is everything for a toasted wich imo. No interaction place. This is the spot I go to when I crave some simple korean street food. I usually get their rose noodles and get extra tteokbokki (so i dont have to pick between the two). It's delicious and satisfies my cravings. However, I do think it's a little pricey for what you get (this comes out to slightly more than $15). Don't blame them though in this economy. read more

The prices were somewhat reasonable, considering that the portions were not huge, but the food was all very yummy. We particularly enjoyed the bulgogi meat, which was tender and flavorful. The sandwich changed!! I wasn't anticipating that since I haven't been to flip poly in a while. They no longer serve the brioche style bun, they have regular toast now. I got the ham and cheese sandwich, which was good don't get me wrong, but it wasn't the same. The only thing that makes it different from a sandwich from ex: Anderson's bakery, is the sweet sauce. They added new things to the menu and the tteokboki was delish. I recommend getting that. The portion is a bit small but for $12.90, not bad! The coffee is consistent. I got the dalgona foam and dalgona coffee. I recommend the dalgona foam if you want more concentrated coffee flavor. The 3/5 stars is purely for the food. Every single time I come here this place is out of stock on something. Last night they were out of the BREAD to make the actual SANDIWCHES. And they had replacement bread. They were also out of BULGOGI. Before that they were out of BULGOGI, HAM and certain SODAS. Question. Who is in charge of inventory here? Is it just pure laziness and neglect? They're losing out on sales because they don't have the basic items on their own menu. If this was a one off case I would understand, but this has happened on MULTIPLE occasions. I have been wanting to try Flippoly for awhile now, and though I've been to UTC a few times, I finally got to try it! Came on a Monday around 12pm and there wasn't really anyone inside. It's a small place with a few tables inside and a cute and simple interior. Me and my friend ordered at the counter and the lady who took our order was nice. I got the rose tteobeokki and my friend got the angus beef sandwich. The food came relatively quick. We were called to grab our food through the number system and we got our own utensils next to the counter. For the rose tteokbokki, it came with glass noodles, bacon, sausage, and rice cake of course. As for the spice, the menu does indicate one flame (while the other tteokbokki options were two or more flames), I would say the sauce was just the right amount of spice for me since it was creamy. I might be able to handle the buldak carbonara one but I might need a lot of water for that haha. I really liked the rose tteokbokki, the rice cake was soft and chewy, and though there were only a few strands of glass noodles, I liked the addition since typically tteobeokki items don't add it. The bacon pieces were pretty good as well. The portion size was a bit on the smaller side but for $12 is not bad and I wasn't too full. For the angus beef sandwich, my friend said it tasted fine, but she wasn't that impressed by it. Overall, a great spot for Korean food! I had the bulgolgi sandwich and was disappointed to realize they changed their bread and sandwich style since I had last been here. Haha first off, I was so happy when I saw this at utc cuz the other location is on the other side of irvine and then it took months to be finished lol. This is a really unique and relatively affordable spot! They package everything nicely for to go so it's a good spot for lunch. I've tried the flip poly at the other irvine location before and this is my second time ( first time seeing dukbokki though). Korean Street toast- comes with a hint of strawberry jam and slaw. I think originally its supposed to use shredded cabbage so i was a bit sad when I saw slaw lol. I don't know what happened because the eggs kind of fell to the bottom and the top was just straight slaw. The bread itself is really nicely buttered. I might go back to the bacon one I tried the first time if I eat here again. Gotta ask to see if every sandwich comes with slaw because I'm not a fan of it HAHA. Sesame latte- decent, coffee tasting. The sweetness is in the black sesame pudding layered on top so definitely mix it. Buldak carbonara- less carbonara than I expected but for the price point and flavor I think it was great. Had some small pieces of pork belly and even cane with glass noodles. I recommend. The spiciness was like black package of buldak noodles so the glass noodles can be a lot to handle. On another note service was nice and I was pleasantly surprised how clean and spacious the kitchen area was. It's rare for workers to have a spot to sit and chill. Bomb! Their dalgona coffee with the little toffee chunks on top ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. I would ask for less toffee chunks next time because once it all dissolved it made the coffee very sweet. When I saw Flippoly's other location on my IG, I was so excited to try it. I was even more excited to hear that one was opening so close to me at UTC. However, I was incredibly let down. The flavor profile being sweet aside (because I don't feel like I should make a judgement on korean sweet-leaning flavors as it's more of a preference), the texture of the egg and cheese were so bad I felt nauseous eating it. I must've had 100 of the original Isaac toast ham cheese special sandwiches in Seoul so I have a good sense of what this beautiful sandwich tastes like. Having tried to attempt to emulate it is quite an endeavor so I give props to Flippoly for giving it a good shot. Bread - 3.5/5 - original has a more full toast size Cheese - 4.5/5 Ham - 4.5/5 Cabbage - 2.5/5 - the OG Isaac toast used a white blend of cabbage that isn't as bitter as the green blend Flippoly uses. That's the main switch I'd recommend as the bitter blend of cabbage really takes away from the overall profile of the sandwich. Mine also came out dry, the white cabbage usually is a fresh watery profile which gives the sandwich a mild watercrest crunch. Sweet dressing - 5/5 - this tasted on point to what Isaac toast is known for in Korea, the sweet blend with the savory is what puts this whole sandwich together. Overall rating - 4/5 - needs to be more watercrest fresh with the cabbage to keep the afterbite from being too dry. It felt I was eating at certain bites a dry cabbage slaw so either more dressing, less cabbage ratio and a switch in cabbage blend would compete this baby. The sandwiches here looked so interesting, I knew I had to try it! I tried the ham egg and bacon egg sandwich. The sandwiches are really large and heavy with the mayonnaise and cheese. I liked the egg a lot because it was really fluffy and light. It was really creamy with the cheese and mayonnaise. I'd probably recommend splitting the sandwich because it did feel a lot to eat the whole thing. My favorite part of the store was the Photo Booth! You can get 2 strips of pictures for $5! Flavor was fantastic, but the container was so small and food inside was filled about 1/4 the way. You get a few pieces of rice cake/hot dogs and that's it. The Bulgogi, Ham, Bacon sandwiches were all good too, but again only the very top actually had ingredients. The bottom 50% of the bread is uncut and has nothing in there. You would think they'd at least put some sauce or cheese inside like all of the other breakfast sandwich spots similar to this. If you love butter, this is your place! Think, Paula Deen budda. Both sides of the brioche bread are toasted in butter AND the eggs are scrambled in more butter. Then, you have the creamy cheese, the creamy house sauce (that has a bit of a kick), AND more saturated fat from the bulgogi or bacon. They didn't have kimchi when I was there, but that one is my favorite. I tried the dalgona iced coffee; it was all right. They have cute photo booths, and the ambiance is cute even though it's small. I've been waiting this entire year for Flippoly to open up in UTC and I'm so happy it finally did so I can finally try their sandwiches. The menu at Flippoly is quite limited and primarily consists of egg and cheese based breakfast sandwiches, but I feel like simple menus are the best since I get overwhelmed when there's too many options to choose from. The bbq bulgogi sandwich that I ordered was so delicious and filling. The bread was perfectly toasted and soft and had a brioche/texas toast style texture. The bulgogi was very tender and had a sweet, juicy taste that paired very well with the egg and melted cheese. The sauce that was spread on the sandwich was also very creamy and had a hint of spice that nicely balanced out the overall heaviness of the sandwich. In my opinion, this sandwich is definitely worth it since it's not too expensive and really fills you up. I was legit about to food coma after inhaling my sandwich. The green grape ade was also super good as well. I think they just blend fresh green grapes for this drink because that's exactly what it tastes like and is super refreshing and not very sweet. I used to love FlipPoly, but I guess they changed a lot of things. The ingredient quality went down quite a bit in my opinion, I remember one of my favorite things about flip poly was the sauce they drizzled in the sandwich, but this time around I barely tasted any sauce, I'm honestly unsure if there was even any sauce. We also ordered the rose tteokbokki, which was pretty good. Maybe because I've had rose rice cakes I thought flip poly's was just okay... they do put quite a bit of ingredients tho! There was rice cake, glass noodle, sausage, and bacon. It has a nice tingle to it from the spiciness, but not tooo spicy imo. We also ordered the dalgona coffee and dalgona foam coffee. Both drinks are good, but the dalgona foam is more worth it as it tastes more concentrated.
