What an incredible experience. The service was fantastic, I haven't experienced customer service like this in quite sometime. It was nice to feel like a valued guest at this restaurant. The atmosphere was so cute, and comfortable, they had new large yellow mugs that was yolk coloured, and beautiful hand crafted drinks with pretty pictures in the foam. I was very surprised to see the quality here, as most places just give you a straight pour of foam on top and it doesn't feel like a barista made your drink. It truly was so delightful to see the care they took with making their food and the presentation was just beautiful! The food also was excellent! My bacon was perfectly cooked, I don't like chewy bacon, they made the perfect crispy not burnt bacon I've ever had. The eggs were perfectly poached, and the excess whites were removed for the presentation, and my eggs were nested into my bacon, sitting in a bed of salad. My goodness was I ever so impressed. I would expect this from a Michelin star restaurant, and with slower service, but I'm thoroughly impressed with the speed of the food, service, and again quality of everything. My friend had the chicken and waffles. This was so close to perfect, I didn't like the seasoning on the chicken which was too flavourful for me, but the crunch, moisture in the chicken, the soft but dense waffle, and the maple butter combination... there is nothing better than this! I asked for my strawberry butter to be subbed they did it, and there was not extra charges on our bills for silly items like this. This place is solid! Exceptional quality of food, service, and over all experience. I didn't think I could find a place to truly enjoy going out to eat, but this one just blew my mind. I came for the souffle pancakes and they did not disappoint!! I opted for the fresh fruit version made with maple creme and topped with strawberries, blueberries and banana. The pancakes were lighter and airier than expected. Paired with a side of crispy bacon and a lovely latte...well sir, that's a good little brunch right there. The food at this place is truly amazing! I would highly recommend the soufflé pancakes, which are light and fluffy but also very filling. My partner and I decided to go about an hour before closing but the staff were super friendly and helpful. The environment was bright and spacious which made it good for moving around. There are a few stairs to get into the building and the washroom is in the basement. Just a heads up for mobility device users. However, this time I was disappointed to find that they no longer have Yelp waitlist available at least not on a Saturday when I was there where you can pre-add your name prior to arrival. You can only add your number to the waitlist once you arrive and then wait another 30 minutes or so before getting seated (at the time I was there). We got seated closer to 11am. We drove Downtown so definitely not great to have to have the clock run down on our parking spot to wait for brunch. So it's safe to say I don't think we'll be returning for brunch here on a Saturday to avoid the wait. Although that's when we usually brunch but oh well. Food is just as good as before. This time we tried the matcha souffle pancake came with matcha cream and red bean which was great. It was the perfect amount of sweetness without needing syrup. My friend is a pancake lover so I thought she might like this place. To get the Japanese pancakes requires a long wait since they take a long time to cook. Fortunately they had these thinner ones that didn't take as long and I got the eggs Benedict. The good: pancakes were good though my friend wasn't thrilled so ‍ I thought they tasted fine. My eggs Benedict was missing hollandaise sauce but I am guessing they don't serve them that way. But the eggs were so small. They are definitely not large eggs. This was my first time visiting Flipper's Toronto, and it couldn't have been more convenient--just a 30-second walk from my hotel. The location alone is a huge plus, but the real star of the show is the PANCAKES! The jiggly, fluffy Japanese soufflé pancakes were absolutely amazing--what an experience! They're light, airy, and melt in your mouth. A quick tip: the lineup can be long, so definitely make a reservation or be prepared for a 15-25 minute wait. Once seated, though, the service was friendly, attentive, and made the wait feel worth it. We ordered three dishes: two soufflé pancakes and one Eggs Benedict. The chocolate soufflé pancake was incredible, served with chocolate/Nutella syrup and caramelized bananas. Those bananas were so good that they honestly should be added to every pancake plate on the menu. To be clear, Flipper's is a diner. There is no alcohol on the menu, and the menu is diner food. - The Croque madame is basically a toasted ham and cheese cut in half, stacked one on top of the other, with a single hard yolk fried egg tossed on top. This is an OK if boring toasted ham and cheese, but I am not convinced that it should be trying to sell itself as Croque Madame. The fries are fairly thick cut and unremarkable - M got the two eggs platter with poached eggs and a side of prosciutto meat. The prosciutto is served cold, and is a fairly generous portion. The buttermilk pancakes are 12 or 13 cm across and a centimeter thick. She says they are fine. - Service is slow. read more

Flipper's is a Japanese-style brunch spot specializing in soufflé pancakes. I came here on a summery September, late morning. On my visit they had their soft opening menu with a sign outside and a beautiful storefront on a picturesque elm street. There's a flight of stairs to enter the restaurant so there are some physical access concerns. During my visit, there were 4 tables full, but maybe 60% of the restaurant was still empty. They have a beautiful, naturally lit interior and the atmosphere feels warm and inviting. I ordered the Eggs Benedict $21 and asked for a side of Truffle fries, and they said they could add it on without paying the full price for the side item since they would serve a lesser portion, but there was some miscommunication and I was served regular fries with ketchup. The fries were okay, nothing special. The eggs Benedict was a huge portion and was very rich and filling. It was delicious and great that the bread was actually one of their pancakes but unsweetened. I ended up with leftovers and was able to take the rest to go! I also ordered an iced tea ~$4-5 which I thought would be nestea-style, but it turned out to be English breakfast tea served on ice, which was a nice, healthier choice, although I felt it was expensive for the portion. The staff was friendly, but nothing outstanding. They have bench-table style seating with one long bench on one side and normal chairs on the other side. This allows for flexibility when dining with larger and smaller groups. They also have normal table seating with chairs only near the windows. While I'm down here visiting in Toronto, I decided to visit Flippers just for fun since the food looks so delicious and expectations were met! Food: [5/5] Blueberry cream cheese pancake: Very beautiful plate and theres a great cream cheese to pancake ratio so theres enough! The pancakes were thick and packed with so much flavor. There was also a maple syrup dipping sauce that was ok not really my cup of tea but everything else was so delicious and I'm appreciative that the maple syrup sauce isn't already drenched on the food. Very delicious highly recommend. Flippers (soufflé) pancake [5/5] These pancakes are so fluffy! It's almost like they're melting in your mouth! The presentation is also very beautiful alongside the taste. It tastes like a sweeter pancake really and the maple cream on this tastes so much better than the maple syrup that goes with the pancakes. The powdered sugar was also a great touch as well! Service: [5/5] Very little wait time to be sat (Dining for 1) and they were moderately busy as well. The wait time for the food wasn't bad it was around 10 minutes but it was well worth the wait since the food was absolutely delicious given they were moderately busy as well. I was excited to try a new restaurant that offers souffle pancakes, and Flipper's did not disappoint! We came in around 1:30PM on Boxing Day - there were a few other tables, but overall it was not too busy. We were seated next to the window - decor is simple, but I loved the stained glass windows that were originally part of the building. We ordered the Fresh Fruit and Matcha pancakes. The menu clearly states that pancakes will take ~20 minutes to prep, so we got a french vanilla latte and side of fried chicken to come out first. I was surprised that the chicken was spicy, and didn't quite match with its sauce. Loved my drink though. Both pancake flavours were delicious, but if I had to choose, I'd go for the Fresh Fruit. I'm not usually a huge fan of berries, but the cream was sweeter than that of the Matcha, creating a nice balance with the pancakes. The texture of the souffle pancakes also hit the spot. Each pancake order is $19, compared to $13-$16 at Fuwa Fuwa. Flipper's does serve 3 pancakes instead of 2, so I think it is still fairly priced. I hope they bring out more flavours in the future. Servers were kind throughout our meal, and I enjoyed the acoustic playlist. I'd recommend Flipper's if you're in the area and craving a sweet brunch! read more

Strawberry Souffle Pancakes: The popular item at Flippers that you must try! They provide you two forks to cut the pancake open. The wait-time for the pancakes takes around half an hour so it's a decent amount of time but they do inform you before ordering. The pancakes were soft and fluffy, the strawberry cream wasn't too sweet and perfect as a light dessert. Flippers is located a bit more tucked away on Elm St. There was a reasonable amount of seating, I went around 3pm so it wasn't too packed. The seating had an interesting window. I get the hype. Went here for brunch and got: - Flipper's Souffle Pancake: The standout. The pancake was fluffy and jiggly yet still had a nice cakey taste. The generous dollops of maple cream put it over the top and makes this my favourite in the city. - Chicken and Waffles: The chicken was juicy and had a great fry, the waffles were standard texture though had almost a bit of a kick in taste. The maple butter syrup was sweet-smooth and added a touch of uniqueness to the dish. - Eggs Benedict: Pretty good amount of protein, good cook on the egg, with a nice pancake bun as the base. Side fries were meh. I think they're getting into the groove on their souffle pancakes as they just keep cooking them so we got ours within five minutes. Oh what a nice find this spot is. The Advent of Japanese chains as introduced some interesting items to TO. I really enjoyed the pancakes here. They are priced slightly higher than the other popular chain for Japanese style souffle pancakes. Well worth the upcharge as this is a proper sit-down and eat spot. I heard about this place when I visited my local Korean grocery store. There was a flyer available, so I took one home to read it more thoroughly. Fast forward, my friend was visiting the city and asked if I could take her to a Japanese cafe. So we decided to go here for lunch on Saturday. We showed up just before noon and the place was packed! Once they came out, we shared to see how the flavours were. Both were delicious- the pancakes were soft and jiggly, the cream was not to sweet and added a lovely sweet touch to the pancakes. First off, this place is super cute. I really liked the way it's decorated and it's very comfortable. Prices are decent as well and I enjoyed the Asian flair to the pancakes which as advertised, super fluffy. My wife for the pancakes (traditional) with the bananas and strawberries. They were good. I got the Croque Madame and it was good. The bread was the highlight for me, as it had a fantastic flavor and paired nicely with the ham and cheese sauce. It needed a bit extra pepper and salt but I enjoyed it. Plus the fries were nice and crispy too. Service was a bit spotty. The lady who helped us was fine, but once we got our food, we never saw her again. We ended up having to get our bill from another server so we could leave. Would I go back? Probably not. It was nicely made but, no sugar or utensils so I waited again. No one came to check on me so I just politely flagged someone down. My meal took a long time as well. I sat waiting and not one person checked on me. Is it because I'm alone? I've found lately that if I'm out alone eating the service is lacking and slow. Do I not matter? I get I'm not in a group, not a a value as a customer and attention is given to groups but I matter as well. My money matters and so does my time. It was overall highly disappointing. I've found as a single person eating alone that service is lacking. Overall if you are in a group, I'm sure the service will be better. Also, the side of butter was excessive. I don't like butter, I said no butter. They buttered the toast which wasn't even toasted just lightly toasted and then a stick of butter on the side. A newly opened breakfast/brunch place in the downtown core specializing in souffle pancakes! I don't normally start with service, but my visit felt very strange that I think needs to be raised. SERVICE (1/5) Despite already having their grand opening, we were informed that on weekends there is no waitlist or check-in available. The solution was to wait outside in a physical line until called which felt a bit primitive in today's climate. After waiting 30-40 minutes for a table, we get seated and get informed by the waiter that the kitchen is backed up and some food (specifically the souffle pancakes) wouldn't be served for around an hour - which seemed ridiculous. They also could not promise that the food for the entire table would come at once meaning some people in our party would be eating while others waited. When the food came, it wasn't even hot and felt like it was sitting out for a while. In addition, everytime I asked for a refill on the bottomless coffee, they would take my cup and not bring it back until asked again. The response was that a new pot of coffee was brewing, except the coffee was barely warm. The staff were very friendly but I think a bit clueless and paired with poor operations left a not-so-great customer experience. FOOD (3/5) We ordered the Chicken and Waffles, Strawberry Souffle Pancakes, Eggs Benny, and Classic Souffle Pancakes. The souffle pancakes were the hold up and took a long time to be served but were indeed fluffy and true to it's flavours. That said, the pancakes were not hot and barely even warm when served. The eggs benny is served on a souffle pancake which is novel but in my opinion makes the dish lack texture cause everything is just kinda mushy. It's served with a super light and bland hollandaise which was disappointing but the egg was properly poached with a runny yolk. The chicken and waffles was a decent dish with the chicken being flavourful but just a smidge dry. The waffles tasted a bit overcooked but softened up with the brown butter syrup sauce which mind you was really tasty. AMBIENCE (2.5/5) The decor is a bit minimal with an exposed interior brick wall. It felt a bit like Cora's..? Definitely gave a more fun, bright feel as opposed to more refined. LOCATION (4/5) Located close to Yonge street between Dundas and College station, it's only a few minutes walk from a TTC station. OVERALL (1.5/5) I think this place has a lot of potential to be a great go-to brunch spot but a lot needs to be done to streamline operations and train service staff. A lot of the mistakes and issues are unacceptable especially since it was after their grand opening and soft opening. I may revisit in a few months to see if service improves.
