I ended up purchasing a set of golf clubs anyway and have been pretty happy with them but I wanted to get a professional's opinion on my shafts, gapping, and lofts. So, I scheduled a club fitting at GolfTec by Ala Moana and was assigned to Justin. Justin was super helpful and didn't make me feel like an idiot. He spoke plainly and at a level I could understand... And he genuinely seemed to love what he did as an instructor and club fitter. He had me hit a couple of 7 irons and looked at what was already in my bag. He said he thought what I had was good for where I'm at but built me an updated version of my 7 iron with a different shaft just to check it out. He must've had it ready because he came back into the room in less than five minutes. He talked me through a couple of things and then showed me some video of myself swinging next to a prerecorded pro. He gave me two tips and said he wouldn't charge me for the visit. I was super grateful. After leaving, I took his tips straight to Ala Wai Driving Range and immediately hit the ball better. It's so bad that I was seriously thinking of just quitting golf. I decided to take an hour lesson with Todd and see if he could help me improve my game. He started by having me hit a few ball just to see what going on with my swing. In 5 minutes he identified my problem and corrected my grip, posture and swing path. The next 30 minutes of working on it I had the ball going straight, long and nice trajectory. It was just amazing how he fixed my game in such a short time. I was so excited that I went and played a round of golf the next day. Well I shot a 95 and that was amazing. I know I need to put in some work on the range, but now I know what to work on. Ken is an exceptional golf instructor. My dad and I have been wanting to play golf together and the…read morestars finally aligned for us to be able to play on Saturdays. The only issue is that my golf game was greatly lacking. I had been given one off lessons over the years, but they only made my game worse. My dad then surprised me with some lessons with Ken and over four lessons he changed my game substantially. Starting off with my first lesson he asked why I was playing golf, and I explained that is was to have fun with my dad on Saturdays. He then said, so our goal is to make golf more fun and less aggravating. We worked on some fundamentals such as posture and grip. In fact fixing my grip that I had been told by so many other instructors was the best for me, but actually it hampered with my ability to hit the ball correctly. That little bit of change allowed me to actually hit the ball correctly instead of it just dribbling in front of me because my club didn't hit the ball in the middle of the face. The other important change he made is that he allowed me to make my own stance that fit my swing. Other people that had helped me had always commented on my foot placement after swinging, but Ken helped make it work and actually my game improved for it. I was amazed and instantly hooked on his teaching style! The next three lessons we worked chipping, driving, different flights (slice and hook), and improving the way I would be playing golf. The part that really amazed my father is that before I even started lessons, I could not hit my driver. Now I was hitting it consistently over 260 yards! Again a huge thanks to Ken and his coaching. Finally one of the best parts about Ken. He is humble, not pushy, and has real knowledge from golf pros. Everything that he taught me he backed up with facts to explain why it was needed or who had championed the technique. This really makes it easy to understand the teachings he is giving me and even sometimes a few jokes here an there! Now that I am playing to well my dad is now taking lessons with Ken to hopefully up his game and not let me get to far ahead and he has also seen major improvement! I also convinced my wife to take up golf, because of the great experience I was having with Ken and she is already seeing major improvement after only a few lessons. As luck would have it, the person who reached out and was available at the time was the head PGA instructor Oliver. I was a little unprepared (no clubs, no gloves), but Oliver was very much go with the flow and was able to accomodate me. He asked me what I wanted to work on, and that's exactly what we did. I improved immensely, because Oliver was able to quickly diagnose the main problems with my swing and explain in an uncomplicated way (without too many "swing thoughts"). I'm excited to go home and practice/implement the changes to my swing.

We were promised a certain price from the Mizuno Rep (Russ Chong) and he told us Oliver (Island Pacific Golf Academy) would bill us and call us when the clubs came in. A week before the clubs came in, our credit card was charged $400 more than the original price. I tried to get a hold of the Mizuno rep with no response and Oliver keeps giving us the run around. To this day he hasn't given us a refund. This was a hard and expensive lesson to learn. Don't do business with Oliver Oliquiano. From other reviews I've read it seems like he has a habit of ripping people off. Shame on him! Especially in Hawaii where the golf community is so tight knit!

They have three simulators and seating areas. Reservations are a good idea but not always necessary. You are allowed to bring in your own food and may purchase beer and wine. Check out the purchase specials or packages as well. Upon entrance, pay your fee and they will clean your clubs. You may grab food at Foodland or a nearby venue and return while they are getting you set up. They have a practice putting green in the entry area with many putters for sale. The shop has quite a nice set up for not being a large retail shop, it is pretty small considering the space is used to golf and improve your game. (And have fun) The simulator areas are very spacious, allowing four people to enjoy time safely, by moving out of each other's way using the seating area and game area. Everyone working there is very helpful and friendly! They have TV monitors and in case something isn't working properly or technology glitches, they are available to troubleshoot & fix it right away. With all of the equipment to support you, they also sell it, like grips, at low costs and can regrip your clubs while you play or wait. You may also leave your clubs and pick them up later. Friends, date nights, students, family... a great spot to check out. Free parking. Casual - wear golf attire or jeans/shorts. It is AC inside so you may even want a light sweatshirt.

The divots are so close together and uneven that balls can easily ricochet back toward players. It honestly feels like an accident is waiting to happen. It costs $15 to use the range, but there are several other places at the same price point that offer much better conditions and overall quality. The staff also felt disengaged. When I was grabbing my balls and tried to say hello and thank you, it was clear they did not want to be there. If you are in Hawaii and just want to golf cheaply and skip the range, this could be an okay option. If you are looking for a better overall golf experience, Bayview Golf Course is farther away but offers much more of the Hawaii feel. That said, the views are nice, with clear sights of Diamond Head and surrounding high rises.
