I Left With a Punctured Lung and Little Accountability... Please read before you seek care there…read more I underwent what I believed were routine trigger point injections, and what followed was one of the most frightening medical experiences of my life. Immediately after the procedure, I developed symptoms that ultimately led to the diagnosis of a punctured lung (pneumothorax). I required emergency treatment, hospitalization, and placement of a chest tube. I experienced significant pain, difficulty taking deep breaths, missed work, and weeks of recovery from an injury that never should have occurred during what was presented as a relatively straightforward procedure. What has been equally disappointing is how the practice handled the situation afterward. Rather than accepting meaningful responsibility or attempting to make things right, I received what amounted to an apology accompanied by statements that the procedure was performed within the standard of care. Their position was essentially that complications can happen, and therefore no further action was warranted. In my case, I was never informed that a punctured lung was a risk of the trigger point injections I received. Had I understood that risk, I would have asked additional questions before consenting. Patients deserve informed consent that is specific to the procedure actually being performed. While the practice stated they reviewed my case and even identified opportunities to improve their documentation and procedural processes, those acknowledgments have done nothing to address the physical pain, emotional distress, lost income, and disruption this complication caused. Mistakes and complications can occur in medicine. What defines a practice is how it responds when they do. I expected accountability, transparency, and a sincere effort to resolve the situation fairly. Instead, I was left feeling that protecting the practice was more important than caring for the patient who was harmed. I hope future patients never experience what I did, and I hope the practice follows through on whatever changes they identified during their internal review. My experience, however, left me deeply disappointed and without confidence that patients are truly supported when serious complications occur.

Be careful when parking and try to park far away from others to protect your vehicle from potential damage. The security guard was super friendly. When checking in, you do so on an iPad that the front desk gives you. The front desk staff was NOT friendly at all. The 4 stars is mainly because of the nurse, who was friendly, and the PA (Jason). Jason didn't rush the visit and allowed my friend to ask as many questions as he needed to. They made the experience great and less stressful for my friend who had to get stitches removed. He wanted to give them 5 stars, BUT that parking situation and front desk experience is why a star was deducted.

Well, the following week when it came time to schedule for the following week, nothing was available. Given it's her JOB to schedule, so she intimately knows that appts book quickly so you need to book several weeks out, it's inexcusable she brushed me off this way. Zero compassion from her. She should NOT be in a customer service role. Put her in back office away from patient interactions.

So I went to the front and a different lady said wow they never checked you in. So she did and I waited another 5 minutes and then was called back. The medical assistant proceeded to take my blood pressure (no other vitals matter I guess which was a first) and then told me that I needed to wait because there was two people now ahead of me. So by this time it is already 45 minutes past my appointment. I asked how long and they told me they didn't know. So after hour and 15 minutes passed I was over it and requested to speak with the office manager. That was a waste of time. He apologized and said he would look into the situation. After finally the doctor coming in it was some random surgeon who had no clue about my surgery. I was beyond pissed off. She took 5 minutes on my appointment about me and then proceeded to tell me about how she had to be with a sobbing patient and if I was sobbing she would spend more time with me. This place wasted my time. A 5 minute appointment took 2 hours. I would have been better off if they said follow up with your primary care physician because that is exactly what I am about to do. I don't trust the capability or competence of this office. I would have felt better if I spoke to the actual surgeon who performed my procedure not some random surgeon who never touched me. She just looked at the glue over the stenches. Didn't perform a real examination. If I could rate this experience as a zero I would. I wish I could have chosen Wake or Duke surgery instead. Beware!!! If you have an option go to the another hospital. Rex has gone down hill since they switched to UNC healthcare.
