a man sitting at the counter - Inside Fleig's Cafe in Ferdinand, Indiana, a whiteboard with red handwriting lists menu items such as Big Wieners, Mac-N-Cheese, and Fart in Beans, with a smiley face. The cafe features wood-paneled walls, a menu board with prices, condiment bottles, and boxes of Miller Lite beer stacked nearby. A vintage wall phone and a door leading to the kitchen are also visible.

Great local diner. Whether it's the 2 jumbo hot dog special or the plate sized tenderloin - you can't go wrong. Wash it all down with an ice cold beer.

Fleig's is everything a small town place should be. They don't even give you a menu because everyone is a regular. It's the town bar, the place to eat, the weekly Kiwanis meeting spot, and you can even get to go beer. What's not to love? Ok, it's definitely "vintage" but like everything on the menu is $5 or less. Sometimes they grill out. There's something called a "splatter platter" that includes fried gizzards, hearts and livers. It too is $5. Myself? I had a fried bologna sandwich on white bread with tater tots because my co worker dared me. And you know what? It was damn tasty! Nothing like Oscar Meyer, this is a thick cut slice of something locally made. And who doesn't love tater tots. Everyone here is beyond nice. The prices are from 1962, along with everything else. It's nothing gourmet, just simple food cooked by nice people. You can't do better, really. (I'm kind of serious, I think this is the only restaurant in town...)

This is the neighborhood watering hole. The food is exactly what you'd have at home -- sandwiches served on white bread. It feels like you're a guest in somebody's home or at least their sweet basement bar. I didn't have a chance to take a turn being the town drunk but it looks like the kind of place where you definitely could. The whiskey selection was better than I would have expected from initial appearances. A definite must-see on the tour of Ferdinand.

We've stopped here before when traveling and always had a good meal, so we decided to stop again as we were nearby. They have the best fried chicken meals of anyplace around. So we walked in and sat down at the last table available. Seems as though everybody in the area was hungry for Chicken at the same time. Ed came from behind the bar and asked us what we would like. We said fried chicken of course. He got a sad look on his face, apologized and said they were all out. And it was only 12:10. Said they served almost 100 orders, said he would be glad to fix us something else. While we were very disappointed, we decided to order alternatives. I ordered a double cheeseburger and buffalo fries. He brought it hot off the grill and it was absolutely delicious. My wife ordered the breaded chicken fillet sandwich and buffalo fries. Also delicious. The prices are outrageous and reasonable. We had a great meal for $10.00. If you travel anywhere close to Ferdinand make sure you stop in for a meal. They also have a full bar and beer by the case, also at outrageous prices. You can't go wrong stopping here.

Bout like the ones I buy at Aldi's.

Great food! I especially love their Turtle Soup. The back room is a good spot for club meetings, too.

Our feedback is keep doing what you do with breakfast. The Haystack is big enough to share, if they have homemade cinnamon rolls grab one and if stuffed get a few to go. Close at 1:30 and only open Wed.-Sat. Coffee cups are small, but never ran out. Yummy filling start to the day. Large parking lot and extra clean restaurant.

At least, it did with us. After reading glowing reviews here on Yelp, I was anxious to try this place on the way to Jasper. They had plenty of wait staff on duty and took our order promptly and even brought us beverages in short order. The coffee was good; strong, very strong, but good and reasonable enough ($1.99 with endless refills). We walked in at about 10:20 and the place was moderately filled, but not crazy busy, and it smelled wonderful, full of breakfasty aromas; coffee, bacon, eggs, maple syrup. We were seated quickly and our waitress, though a little pokey (she went to the table of a guy who came in AFTER us before coming to us, something that doesn't sit well with me), promptly took our drink orders, then returned with said beverages and took our food order. I was dying to try "The Haystack" and my wife ordered the meal with eggs, sausage and a biscuit. Prices were fairly reasonable. Our waitress said she'd get our order in and we thanked her. 5 minutes passed. 10 minutes passed. There were two gentlemen sitting across the room from us evidently waiting for good as was the guy who came in after us. 15 minutes passed. 20 minutes passed. My wife and I were wondering how long it could take to prepare breakfast food. 30 minutes passed. The guy who came in after us got HIS food. 10 more minutes passed. The other two gentlemen received their food. Another 10 minutes. We finally inquired and our waitress told us "yours is up next..." Ten more minutes passed. A big table of six got THEIR food. Our food NEVER materialized. We were in a tight schedule and finally had to wind up leaving without ever receiving our food. It's a shame, too, because the food I saw and smelled seemed like it would've been really good. Suffice to say, I doubt we'll be back.
