A Surprise Stop That Felt Like Home Let me start by saying: I didn't plan to end up at Fleig's Bar in Ferdinand, Indiana--but I'm so glad I did. After a dinner plan in nearby Santa Claus fell through (restaurant system issues, long story), I found myself scrambling to find anywhere still serving food. I called Fleig's to double-check their hours, and Ben--the owner--answered the phone himself. He told me I could still come by if I was willing to share a beer with them. Instant 5-star vibes. When I arrived, Ben was outside packing things up for the night, but he recognized my voice immediately and welcomed me like I was an old friend. Before I even made it inside, we were deep in conversation about life, travel, and why the heck a theme park nerd from Orlando was wandering around southern Indiana. Inside, I was greeted with genuine warmth from the team--including Ben's fiancé and his mom--and they had saved me a plate of their legendary barbecue chicken, a tradition Ben brought back after locals begged him to revive it. And y'all... that chicken was next-level. Juicy, smoky, and honestly better than most BBQ joints I've been to in major cities. The drink I had was strong, delicious, and practically Disney-priced-in-reverse. But the real star of the night wasn't the food (though it was excellent). It was the community. I ended up sitting at the bar and chatting long past closing time with regulars who told me stories about the early days of Santa Claus Land, flying planes as kids, and why they chose to raise families in a town that actually feels like one. I live five minutes from Disney World. I'm used to big attractions, flashy dining, and endless entertainment. But I couldn't tell you a single neighbor's name. Stumbled in after looking for a place to eat late at night. This place made us wish we lived closer. From the moment we came in the door we were made to feel we were local from the staff and the customers. The food was very good, especially the fried chicken. Honestly, the most friendly and best service we've ever had. And I still say the owner looks a lot like Josh Allen. If you are ever in the area, great place to relax and have a bite and even a drink. My wife and I were returning to St. Louis from visiting our son in Louisville and ordered lunch to go. We were impressed with the professional service at the bar and devoured our steak burgers (with the works) in the car before heading back. Fleig's is everything a small town place should be. They don't even give you a menu because everyone is a regular. It's the town bar, the place to eat, the weekly Kiwanis meeting spot, and you can even get to go beer. What's not to love? Ok, it's definitely "vintage" but like everything on the menu is $5 or less. Sometimes they grill out. There's something called a "splatter platter" that includes fried gizzards, hearts and livers. It too is $5. Myself? I had a fried bologna sandwich on white bread with tater tots because my co worker dared me. And you know what? It was damn tasty! Nothing like Oscar Meyer, this is a thick cut slice of something locally made. And who doesn't love tater tots. Everyone here is beyond nice. The prices are from 1962, along with everything else. It's nothing gourmet, just simple food cooked by nice people. You can't do better, really. (I'm kind of serious, I think this is the only restaurant in town...) read more

This is the neighborhood watering hole. The food is exactly what you'd have at home -- sandwiches served on white bread. It feels like you're a guest in somebody's home or at least their sweet basement bar. I didn't have a chance to take a turn being the town drunk but it looks like the kind of place where you definitely could. The whiskey selection was better than I would have expected from initial appearances. A definite must-see on the tour of Ferdinand. read more

Yea great place for food and sup-par drinks. Service is basically trash if you're not a regular. Went here today and was completely ignored by the bartender. They had plenty of time to sit at a table of the only other maybe four guests and loudy talk badly about Joe Biden. When I wrote a note about it on the receipt, the bartender took to Facebook to publicly say that I would not be served there anymore. Also the bartenders significant other felt the need to personally message me and call me a "little bitch boy". Idk maybe just treat all your guests equally and actually talk to them and a tip would've been given. Why would I give my money to a bartender who didn't even serve me. read more

We've stopped here before when traveling and always had a good meal, so we decided to stop again as we were nearby. They have the best fried chicken meals of anyplace around. So we walked in and sat down at the last table available. Seems as though everybody in the area was hungry for Chicken at the same time. Ed came from behind the bar and asked us what we would like. We said fried chicken of course. He got a sad look on his face, apologized and said they were all out. And it was only 12:10. Said they served almost 100 orders, said he would be glad to fix us something else. While we were very disappointed, we decided to order alternatives. I ordered a double cheeseburger and buffalo fries. He brought it hot off the grill and it was absolutely delicious. My wife ordered the breaded chicken fillet sandwich and buffalo fries. Also delicious. The prices are outrageous and reasonable. We had a great meal for $10.00. If you travel anywhere close to Ferdinand make sure you stop in for a meal. They also have a full bar and beer by the case, also at outrageous prices. You can't go wrong stopping here. read more

From the time I walked through the door, I knew this was a local's place. From about 30 seconds after I walked through the door I knew that I was going to be considered a local. The people were friendly and the food was good and very reasonable we did not want to stop for fast food so we ventured into town and found this place. It was worth the trip for the hospitality alone. Fried chicken was cooked but not over done. The guy who took our order was beyond friendly and charming. It was like having your brother come take care of you. My mom is a little slow and on oxygen... Physically slow not mentally slow. He patiently waited for her to get seated and get everything adjusted. He did not even seem annoyed by it. I cannot Stress enough how friendly everyone was. read more

What a surprise. We jumped off the expressway and decided to get a bite a the local tavern. We all had the daily special. Fried chicken, mashed taters with gravy, buttered egg noodles, and peas and carrots. It was delicious. As good as our food was the friendly staff was better. I walked in after lunch hour and they had half a dozen people. I had the special, best $7.50 I've spent. There was pork steak, creek fries and green beans. The creek fries are cabbage, onion, potatoes and bacon. The veggies were so delish I almost asked for seconds, as it was I wasn't able to finish my pork steak. Best home cooking I've had in years. Service was friendly and my plate was ready in under a minute. As if by magic, it was still the perfect temperature. By the way, they are under Eastern time zone. I was recommended to come back on Tuesday when they have their fried chicken plate on special. We were warmly greeted, introduced to the regulars, and handed a bowl of popcorn as we walked though the door for a non-chain lunch at about 1:45 pm. We saw a bar along the wall and a handful of tables and were invited to sit anywhere. We were made to feel right at home. The owner (?) told us the steak burger was good but he could fix anything on the menu. The burger was huge and cooked nicely and served quickly. We were back on the road on 45 minutes! We went to Santa Claus for Christmas festivities. This place had the highest rating for the vicinity. I took into account the stars AND read every comment. I had the fried chicken and German potatoes that another commenter recommended. Very good. Other than "bar food" (cheeseburgers, fries, onion rings, pretzels, hotdogs) fried chicken and fish were the only other foods. Seemed like they are kind of known for those. I saw most people had ordered one or the other. Also, another commenter said that the burgers were horrible and frozen premade patties. I would agree to that as well as my husband is one of the pickiest ppl alive. He still ordered it and said it was "ok" at best but he would've preferred fast food. So, overall I would rate the place as just "ok" because they don't have much variety and what they do have seems to be either very good or blah.
