This place is exactly as you'd imagine. The menu has a variety of chicken dishes with sides, appetites, and salads. There was a limited selection of beers and had liquors at the bar. The food was delicious! The food is also made to order so it's hot and fresh but takes a moment to come out. But again, it was hot and fresh! The service was great! I went with a big group of 10 people but the staff kept checking on our drinks and brought us anything we need. Chicken So, coworker tells me that there is this chicken place over in Ireland, IN that is imaginatively named "the chicken place" and they have the best fried chicken. I haven't had good fried chicken in an eon so we headed over. Mid-week the place was not too crowded and we had our choice between table seating or the bar. We chose the table and the extremely friendly waitress got us going with drinks. There are a lot of beers available by the schooner - which is just this big-ass goblet. Mixed drinks were on a much smaller scale. The menu is pretty basic: you pick what chicken you like- you can save time and just get a 1/2, 1/4 and whole bird, or order the particular pieces you like a la carte. Pick two sides and off you go to fried chicken heaven. Food takes a little time to prepare which tells me that they make it to order - perfect. Result: some damn fine crunchy fried chicken that had a great texture and was not too greasy. Overall a fine meal. Green bean side were fine enough and a side salad rounded out the meal. First of all any place that has been around since 1948 is obviously doing something right. Being a chicken fan I've been trying to come to this place for years, but it was never the right timing as they open at 4 o'clock and I'm usually here earlier in the day. But tonight a very wonderful customer of ours made it possible for us all to meet for dinner, and so we did. We all ordered the chicken except for one of us ordered the chicken livers as he is a regular and likes delivers there. I ordered half a chicken the dark meat as I'm a dark meat fan and the German potato salad. The chicken was memorable and I will definitely try to make it back here the gym and potato salad was heaven, and by the way I also ordered the coleslaw which was so unique and wonderful I am asking for the recipe the next time I'm there. Returned hoping things had changed. We sat in the bar. It was early with only a few tables seated in the place. Sever was quick & attentive to get our drink & food order. Drinks came. Then the server's reservation was about to be seated --know because bartender & server discussed at length. That is when our service stopped. The place is so focused on reservation - we have had this problem in the past here- they forget about the rest of the place. After sitting at length, I went to the bar for another drink. They prepare each entree to order and it shows. Started with two appetizers 1) fried chicken livers, something that I hated has a child but later developed a taste for. These are to put simply the best I've ever had. 2) Fried mushrooms were also a homerun. Somehow I had room for a 1/4 of a fried chicken, you have a choice of white or dark meat. Oh did I mention the cold draft beer that can be had in schooners 1 Guiness and 1 Bass Ale. There was one waitress and one bartender. The waitress was an older lady who was working her tail off. The bartender was a much younger guy who stood behind the bar and watched TV. The place was packed so the waitress was running all over the place trying to get everyone served while the bartender stood behind the bar and did nothing. I've never seen someone be as worthless as this guy. I really felt bad for the older lady who was working so hard. I waited 18 minutes just to get a menu. She couldn't get to me any faster because she was so busy, and he couldn't be bothered to help her because he was too busy drinking coke and watching TV. There were four people at the bar so apparently he thought he was busy too. The food was average. Even if the service was amazing, I wouldn't come back. The fried chicken was bland and kinda greasy. The German potatoes were slightly burnt and bland. If you're going to be called The Chicken Place, you better have good chicken. This was not good chicken. Price was acceptable. It cost what I expected for what I ordered. Decor is run down with a hole in the wall kinda vibe. Kinda what you'd expect from a small town joint. So, here's a perfect summer day: Early morning rise and drive to Holiday World. Rides in the morning, water park from 11-5 with multiple trips around the lazy river. After drying off and getting the water out of your ears, heading to Ireland, Indiana to dine at the Chicken place. Ordering a 1/2 chicken, german potato salad, and a schooner of beer. The fried chicken is expertly cooked and flavorful from (I think) being brined. It's so juicy that my breast piece, one of two, had a puddle forming underneath after one bite. Every year, my family spends Thanksgiving in Jasper, IN -- and one of the things that makes the trip even more special is an early dinner at the Chicken Place! We like to get there right when it opens at 3:30pm and spend an hour+ enjoying quite possibly the best fried chicken I've ever had. The chicken is unbelievably moist, crisp and flavorful. I'll get a 1/2 chicken order blended with a breast, wing, drum and thigh. Comes with 2 sides (love the German potato salad and real potato French fries) all for under $14. I can't eat it all...but order extra to bring home 'cause I only get this little piece of heaven-on-a-bone once a year! They also serve ice cold beer in a glass the size of a fish bowl. Call it a "schooner". 20oz. The black and tan (Guinness 'n Bass) in particular pairs well with anything served here :-) Great place to bring the kids! read more

I've been to the Chicken Place before but I didn't have nearly the experience as the previous reviewers, however my experience was probably harshly skewed by the fact that we had to wait nearly an hour for our food!! Pretty sure they had to go slaughter and dress the chicken out back prior to frying it! Not only that, but the waitress didn't come to us to address the lengthy wait in any way, shape or form. She just ignored us for an hour until the food came out and then said "sorry for the wait" like it was no big deal. By the time we got our food we were so annoyed that I don't even remember how it tasted. I'm sure the chicken is fantastic but I really have no recollection!! I will make it a point to bookmark the place so that I'll remember to try it again the next time I'm craving fried chicken, which isn't too often since it's on every wedding/wake/fair menu in the area. Steaks are also said to be very good, but I get there seldom enough that I must order fried chicken. One can order exactly the pieces one wants. Fishbowls of beer are very popular - large heavy glass fishbowls on stems hold about 2 bottles of beer, but comes with draft beer. Large tavern room with tables and good service, rear family room restauarant and side room for additional seating and large parties. Reservations, sometimes, only for private large parties such as a business Christmas dinner. This restaurant was Leinenbach's for a very long time, 30 to 50 years, and was so excellent that the wait was always 30 minutes to over an hour on Friday and Saturday nights - quite well worth the wait. The food was so well-known that people calling to get the phone number could get to the operator and ask for "The Chicken Place in Ireland". Long ago the chickens were actually raised by the owners and the fried chicken was larger, juicier and more tender than anyplace else anywhere. The "crust" on the chicken is SO flaky, flavorful and crispy. When the owners finally retired the restaurant was purchased by a woman who had been a waitress/cook for 25 years or so, and the food quality remained the same. The only change made was to the name, from Leinenbach's to The Chicken Place. read more

Reviewer Eric P is right on the money. That's the perfect day. Actually any day that ends at the Chicken Place is a perfect day. I'm a Southerner by birth so I take my Fried Chicken seriously, and so does this place. It's always crowded so try to get here early. And expect a bit of a wait because they fry their chicken the correct way (in an iron skillet rather than a deep fryer). As Alton Brown says your patience will be rewarded because the chicken is moist, flavorful, and crispy in all the right places. You'll chortle the next time you pass by a KFC. The ambience is homey. Meals are accompanied with tasty local bread. And you can order your chicken a multitude of ways white, 1/2 dark etc. Even a la carte. I love an appendage meal (legs and wings). My 80+ year old mother and her friend were there a few weeks ago on a Saturday night and were disappointed. The chicken was very hard but the inside of one leg was undone. I didn't know that was possible. The german potato salad was soggy and lacking any flavor. The only thing they could eat was the salad. Actually, the quality has dropped quite a bit, but still not like most of the restaurants in Southern Indiana - using "straight out of the bag" ingredients. Prices have almost doubled over the past few years, staff and owners aren't very friendly - you could say "grumpy". Had not been here for about 20 years. The chicken was very good and may be the best in southern Indiana. The German fries were fantastic as was the home made bread and what looked like and tasted like home canned green beans. What wasn't so great was the booth seats which needed new springs twenty years ago. Be prepared for an all evening dining event. I ordered the dark meat because I like my chicken nice and juicy inside crunchy skin; sadly, this was not the case with mine. As other Yelpers mentioned, the pace of my meal flow was seriously too long of a wait, though I enjoyed my salad before my meal and I liked the ranch. I like Grandy's fried chicken a whole lot better and I don't have to wait that long. German fries, however, were oh-so-yum! The underdog reigned supreme! Could've had a whole plate of German fries only and been satisfied.
